Preview: Old Dominion at North Carolina State

When: 6:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Carter Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina

North Carolina State will try to get past a painful loss and gain some momentum entering ACC play when it hosts Old Dominion on Saturday. The Wolfpack suffered a 33-30 setback at East Carolina in a back-and-forth affair last Saturday, stalling out in Pirates' territory as time expired after giving up the go-ahead touchdown in the waning minutes.

"We had some missed opportunities, we left some plays out on field," N.C. State quarterback Ryan Finley told the school's website. "(East Carolina) was a tough loss, we look forward to moving on and getting ready for Old Dominion." After the Monarchs leave town, N.C. State gets a much-needed week off before it begins a stretch in which four of six opponents are currently ranked 18th or better, including three in the top 10. "I told them, 'We've got 10 games left and we can decide what we want to do with them right now," coach Dave Doeren told reporters after last week's loss. Old Dominion dropped a 31-7 decision at Appalachian State last week but has given the Wolfpack a fight each of the last two years, losing 46-34 in its previous visit to Raleigh in 2014.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, ACC Network Extra. LINE: N.C. State -21.5

ABOUT OLD DOMINION (1-1): Ray Lawry has opened with consecutive 100-yard rushing games for the second straight season, picking up his second touchdown in last week's loss. Senior quarterback David Washington is 26-for-52 on the season while receivers Zach Pascal and Jonathan Duhart have combined for 16 catches and 224 yards. Lawry was held to 15 yards on 11 runs in last year's 38-14 loss to N.C. State at home.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (1-1): The Wolfpack has rushed for over 200 yards in five straight contests, averaging 253.6 on the ground during that stretch. Matthew Dayes led the way against East Carolina with 103 yards on just 14 carries and he tops the team with 241 on the season, while Reggie Gallaspy II has averaged 9.6 yards on his nine attempts. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Finley has been very efficient, completing 71.2 percent of his passes for 428 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. N.C. State totaled 498 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground in wins over Old Dominion in 2014 and 2015.

      2. Wolfpack WR Stephen Louis had 142 of his team-leading 146 receiving yards against East Carolina.

      3. Monarchs LB Anthony Wilson set a team record with three sacks last week.

      PREDICTION: N.C. State 38, Old Dominion 17

          Preview: Maryland at Central Florida

When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Bright House Networks Stadium, Orlando, Florida

Maryland looks to continue the efficiency it has shown on offense and remain unbeaten under new coach D.J. Durkin when UCF entertains the Terrapins on Saturday night. Durkin’s squad has yet to turn the ball over in a pair of victories and can equal its win total from 2015 with a victory over UCF, which is also turning the page with a first-year coach in Scott Frost.

“Everybody is happy,” Maryand's junior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. told reporters. “We just want to keep building on it.” Senior quarterback Perry Hills is running the show with aplomb for the Terrapins, completing 27-of-37 passes with three touchdown strikes. “(Hills) came out and played really well,” Durkin told reporters. “To go two games with no turnovers, really clean, your quarterback has to make good decisions.” UCF won its opener against South Carolina State 38-0 before losing at Michigan 51-14 last weekend, but Frost told reporters plenty of positives came out of the setback at the Big House. “(Michigan) executed well and our guys went out there and fought,” Frost said. “If we can keep that kind of energy, enthusiasm and effort and keep adding execution to that, then I know this team will be happy at the end of the year.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Maryland –8.5

ABOUT MARYLAND (2-0): The Terrapins, who meet UCF for the first time, have shown plenty of balance in their rushing attack with six different players scoring at least one touchdown while freshman Lorenzo Harrison (131 yards rushing) and senior Trey Edmunds (126) lead the way. Hills hasn’t had to throw the ball much, but freshman D.J. Moore has emerged as the leading receiver with 10 catches and 184 yards to go along with two TDs. “He’s a complete player,” Durkin told reporters. “. … He’s got big-play ability like he showed, and he’s really dependable catching the ball.”

ABOUT UCF (1-1): Starting quarterback Justin Holman’s status is uncertain after reportedly suffering a hamstring injury against Michigan and fellow senior Nick Patti would replace him if he can’t go. One of the bright spots last week was the rushing attack, which produced 275 yards, and senior Dontravious Wilson along with freshmen Jawon Hamilton and Adrian Killins each have at least 90. Holman has not thrown an interception, but is just 17-of-39 passing, while sophomore receiver Tre’Quan Smith is the top target with four catches for 65 yards and a score.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. Maryland CB J.C. Jackson, a former Florida Gator, returned to the lineup after missing the first game due to academic issues and had three tackles.

          2. UCF senior LB Mark Rucker has 11 unassisted tackles among his 14 and three quarterback hurries in two games.

          3. Terrapins WR DeAndre Lane, who had five catches in the opener, missed the last game with a concussion and is questionable for Saturday.

          PREDICTION: Maryland 38, UCF 21

              Preview: Navy at Tulane

When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Yulman Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana

Tulane is just starting to grasp the intricacies of first-year head coach Willie Fritz's offense, just in time to face a team that runs a similar option attack. The Green Wave will kick off American Athletic Conference play when they host Navy on Saturday.

Georgia Southern and Navy finished first and tied for second, respectively, in rushing average last season, when Keenan Reynolds was setting records for the Midshipmen and Fritz was the head coach for the Eagles. Fritz vowed to adapt his offense to the personnel on hand when he took over for Tulane, but the offense in the win over Southern last weekend looked very similar to the option attack he ran at Georgia Southern - and it was plenty explosive. The Green Wave rushed for 437 yards - the third-most in school history - in the 66-21 triumph while attempting only six passes, and forced four turnovers on defense to wash away the bad taste from a season-opening loss at Wake Forest. Navy played its AAC opener against Connecticut last week and totaled 235 yards on the ground in the 28-24 victory.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN3, American Sports Network. LINE: Navy -6

ABOUT NAVY (2-0): The Midshipmen were held almost 200 yards below their season rushing average against Tulane last season but forced three turnovers and managed a 31-14 victory. "Unfortunately, you do remember last year's game," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo told reporters. "Tulane has some really athletic guys inside, a lot of good players on defense. They played really, really well against us." The big difference from last season for the Midshipmen is the absence of quarterback and leading rusher Reynolds, but Will Worth has been a solid replacement so far and Chris High rushed for 212 yards and three TDs in the first two games.

ABOUT TULANE (1-1): Fritz's triple-option attack is different from the one employed by Navy, and the Green Wave had some trouble grasping the nuances in the 7-3 loss at Wake Forest that opened the season. Fritz used freshman Johnathan Brantley at quarterback in Week 2 along with Week 1 starter Glen Cuiellette, and Brantley impressed with 119 rushing yards to earn himself the start against the Midshipmen. "I was pleased with our evolution on offense from the Wake Forest game," Fritz told reporters. "We had some explosive plays. We made the progress from Week 1 to Week 2 that we wanted."

              EXTRA POINTS

              1. Brantley and Dontrell Hilliard (103) became the first pair of Tulane teammates to rush for 100 or more yards in the same game since 1998.

              2. Navy has not started 3-0 in back-to-back seasons since 1978 and 1979.

              3. The Midshipmen have won 18 straight games against unranked opponents.

              PREDICTION: Navy 35, Tulane 31

                          Preview: Texas A&M at Auburn

When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Jordan Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin sees a lot of similarities between his No. 20 Aggies and host Auburn heading into Saturday's SEC opener. Both teams have recorded big offensive games, have shown improving defenses and have fan bases expecting more wins.

"I think, a little bit like us, people have been down on them a little bit for not winning double-digit games," Sumlin said. "(Auburn) is hungry, just like us. I think they've got something to prove just like we do, and they're at home." The Tigers have been solid against the run, allowing 108.5 yards on the ground after allowing 182.7 yards last year, and the Aggies have also improved their rushing-defense numbers, allowing 78.5 rushing yards after holding Prairie View A&M to 32. Texas A&M features some of the league's top receivers while Auburn has built a balanced attack behind sophomore quarterback Sean White. The teams have split their four meetings since the Aggies joined SEC with the road team winning each time.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Auburn -3.5

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (2-0): Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight (583 passing yards, four touchdowns) is second in the SEC in passing and is tied for the league lead with three rushing TDs. Oklahoma transfer Keith Ford (team-high 63.5 yards) also has three rushing TDs for Texas A&M, which is averaging 49 points. Christian Kirk (team-high 13 catches for 164 yards, two TDs) needs seven receptions to join teammates Josh Reynolds (six catches, 131 yards, TD) and Ricky Seals-Jones (six catches, 90 yards) with 100 career catches.

ABOUT AUBURN (1-1): White went 17-of-23 for 244 yards and three scores last week after rotating with two other quarterbacks in a Week 1 loss to Clemson. Sophomore tailbacks Kerryon Johnson (218 yards, three TDs) and Kamryn Pettway (152 yards) each recorded their first 100-yard games last week, helping the Tigers to a SEC-leading 274.5-yard rushing average. Marcus Davis (seven receptions, 60 yards) is one of three Tiger receivers with at least five catches while Tony Stevens (five catches, 91 yards) has two scoring receptions.

                          EXTRA POINTS

                          1. Auburn allowed Arkansas State to complete passes for 34, 38, 42 and 68 yards in last week's 51-14 win.

                          2. The Aggies are trying to start 3-0 for the third straight year, something they haven't done since 1939-41.

                          3. Kirk passed 2,000 career all-purpose yards last week while teammates Speedy Noil (53) and Reynolds (120) are closing in on that mark.

                          PREDICTION: Texas A&M 28, Auburn 24

Preview: Mississippi State at Louisiana State

When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

No. 22 LSU's entire backfield is up in the air Saturday when Mississippi State pays a visit in SEC action. The Tigers are likely to have star running back Leonard Fournette back in the lineup, but the team's starting quarterback remains a secret with conference play ready to begin.

Fournette (ankle) missed last week's win over Jacksonville State, while Danny Etling took over for Brandon Harris under center. Etling replaced a struggling Harris on the third possession and led three straight scoring drives in an eventual 34-13 triumph. "It was a pretty cool feeling. It was pretty nice, especially since we were down at the time," Etling said to reporters. "It was nice to put ourselves in a position to succeed." The Bulldogs began SEC play last week with a 27-14 win against South Carolina as Nick Fitzgerald set a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-1, 1-0 SEC): Bulldogs wideout Fred Ross caught a touchdown and threw for another score last week, and the senior enters this weekend leading all active SEC receivers in career catches (138). Fitzgerald, meanwhile, is looking to deliver an encore to his 195-yard rushing effort against South Carolina and enters this weekend second in the nation in rushing yards among quarterbacks. On the defensive side of the ball, A.J. Jefferson is tied for the SEC lead with three sacks and has a league-high six tackles for loss.

ABOUT LSU (1-1, 0-0): The Tigers leaned on sophomore Derrius Guice in Fournette's absence last week and were rewarded with 155 rushing yards and a score. Etling, a transfer from Purdue who was making his LSU debut, completed only six passes but those passes went for 100 yards and a score, plus he added a rushing TD. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith paces LSU with 17 tackles, while cornerback Tre'Davious White had a pick-six in Week 1 and a punt return for a touchdown in Week 2.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. LSU is 8-1 in its last nine conference openers.

                              2. The Tigers have won 15 of the last 16 meetings with the Bulldogs, although Mississippi State won the last time the teams met here in 2014.

                              3. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 41-0 in the first half this season.

PREDICTION: Mississippi State 29, LSU 23
