    Preview: Temple at Penn State

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Beaver Stadium, University Park, Pennsylvania

After what happened last season in the opener at Temple, Penn State can't waste any time lamenting over a 42-39 loss to Pittsburgh when the Owls come calling Saturday. Last season, Temple, which had lost 31 straight games to the Nittany Lions, sacked star quarterback Christian Hackenberg 10 times - the most by one team in one game in FBS - and embarrassed the Lions 27-10.

"Obviously, last year we're all aware of," Penn State third-year coach James Franklin told reporters this week. The season before, 30-13 here in State College. The year before that, in 2012, was (24-13). In 2011, at Lincoln Financial Field was 14-10. This game has become more and more competitive." Nobody is more competitive than Penn State runner Saquon Barkley, whose five touchdowns last week helped the Lions rally from a 21-point deficit and provided a chance to win when a potential scoring pass went through the hands of wideout DaeSean Hamilton and Trace McSorley followed a few plays later with the Lions' fourth turnover, an end-zone interception with 1:15 left. Temple bounced back from a season-opening loss to Army last week, holding Stony Brook to 133 yards in a 31-0 shutout. This week’s game will not be without controversy in Happy Valley, as Penn State plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno's first game as coach, a decision that has been met with stiff resistance in some areas, including the school's student newspaper.

TV: Noon ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Penn State -8.5.

ABOUT TEMPLE (1-1): Playing behind a suspect offensive line, quarterback Phillip Walker, the school's all-time leading passer, is 23-of-49 for 292 yards and three TDs - all against Stony Brook - with four interceptions and six sacks. The Owls are hopeful for the return of running back Jahad Thomas (1,262 yards, 17 rushing TDs in 2015), who gained 135 yards on 29 carries with two TDs last season against the Lions but missed the first two weeks this year with a dislocated thumb. Filling in for Thomas, Ryquell Armstead has 30 carries for 125 yards and two TDs.

ABOUT PENN STATE (1-1): In his second career start, McSorley went 24-of-35 for 332 yards against Pitt, including converting a fourth-and-16 in the final drive, and Barkley ran for 85 yards on 20 carries. ''We started off slow, they punched us in the mouth first,'' Barkley said after the game. ''We responded but we've just got to come out earlier and be ready to play earlier.'' The Lions' new up-tempo offense is averaging 36 points and 380 yards per game but the revamped defensive front, after the departure of three defensive lineman to the NFL, is yielding an average 245.5 yards on the ground - almost 100 more per game than last season.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Temple fourth-year coach Matt Rhule, who last season led the Owls to their first top-25 ranking in 36 years, played linebacker for Penn State from 1994-97 and started his coaching career there as a volunteer assistant.

    2. The Nittany Lions will be hosting their second annual "Stripe Out" game, as sections of stands will alternate between blue and white attire. "We want to not allow, as best we can, the crowd and the atmosphere to affect us," Rhule told reporters this week. "It's really, really hard. It's a really, really loud place."

    3. Barkley's five total TDs (four rushing, one receiving) last week are the most by a Lion since Ki-Jana Carter tallied five times against Michigan State in 1994.

PREDICTION: Penn State 33, Temple 17

      Preview: Kansas at Memphis

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee

After an ugly loss to Ohio, Kansas hits the road for the first time this season Saturday afternoon when it takes on a Memphis team that is coming off a very early bye week. The Jayhawks followed up their season-opening win with a loss to the Bobcats, while the Tigers cruised to a victory over Southeast Missouri State in their only game.

The Kansas offense struggled against Ohio, managing just 21 total yards in the first half and 232 for the entire contest in a 37-21 setback. The defense wasn't much better, allowing the Bobcats' offense to run more than twice as many plays and possess the ball for 44:42 of the game. That's trouble against a Memphis squad that likes to run an uptempo offense under first-year head coach Mike Norvell. The Tigers like to attack through the air behind quarterback Riley Ferguson, who had 295 yards and three touchdown passes in the team's opening win.

TV: Noon ET, ESPNU. LINE: Memphis -20.5

ABOUT KANSAS (1-1): Coach David Beaty would likely suit up for the Jayhawks if he could, but he has taken on many different tasks in his second season. The latest, for the team's play-caller and quarterbacks coach, is kickoff and punt return coach as Beaty tries to improve upon the three fumbles already lost this season by the punt return team -- the only lost fumbles the team has. "If (fumbles are) going to happen, it's going to be my fault," Beaty told reporters. "I've done it for a long, long time and I have a specific teaching progression that I want to use. I just think it's sound and I know exactly how I want it taught and I know what I want it to look like."

ABOUT MEMPHIS (1-0): Despite a dominating performance in the team's 35-17 win over Southeast Missouri State in the opener, the Tigers' defense isn't satisfied. The unit has a goal of holding teams to 19 points or fewer each game, but even though they accomplished that feat, many players and coaches see room for improvement after they allowed 14 second-half points. "We started out well but personally -- and I talked with a couple of the players -- we felt like we didn't finish as well as we should've," Defensive End Ernest Suttles told reporters. "No disrespect to (SE Missouri State), but as a defense and our expectations of what we want to do this year, we felt like they scored too many points."

      EXTRA POINTS

      1. Kansas WR Steven Sims Jr. is one of only eight FBS players to record two 100-yard receiving games this season, and one of only two players among that list to have four touchdowns.

      2. Tigers RB Doroland Dorceus had a multiple-touchdown game in the season opener for the third straight season, running for one touchdown and receiving a scoring pass against Southeast Missouri State.

      3. Memphis continues to be tough in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on three of its four trips inside the 20 against Southeast Missouri State, with the only non-score coming on a kneel down to end the game.

      PREDICTION: Memphis 42, Kansas 14

Preview: North Dakota State at Iowa

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, Iowa

No. 11 Iowa won’t be looking past its final tune-up before Big Ten play as it prepares to host five-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon. Iowa has won nine straight home games and 14 consecutive regular-season contests, but the Bison come in with five victories in a row against FBS opponents -- including Minnesota of the Big Ten.

“The bottom line is they have good players and are well-coached,” Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters. “They play hard and physical and their style of football reminds me of the last two teams we played at the end of the season last year in Michigan State and Stanford. It’s a different kind of challenge for us.” Iowa has been efficient offensively in its first two games while posting 87 points without a turnover and is led by senior quarterback C.J. Beathard, who is 15-0 as a starter in the regular season and has four touchdown passes in two games. The Hawkeyes’ defense held Iowa State to three points last week and will face a high-powered North Dakota State offense that has produced 961 yards in two wins. The Bison, who are ranked No. 1 in FCS, have edged both Charleston Southern (24-17) and Eastern Washington (50-44) in overtime.

TV: Noon. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Off

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA STATE (2-0): The Bison, who are 8-3 in the last 11 games against FBS foes, must be much sharper on defense after giving up 819 yards in the first two contests. Sophomore Lance Dunn (178 yards) and senior King Frazier (118) lead the ground attack while sophomore quarterback Easton Stick has chipped in with another 105 while passing for 451 yards. Sophomore Darrius Shepherd has been the top receiving threat with eight catches for 127 yards and RJ Urzendowski (four, 121) has also contributed.

ABOUT IOWA (2-0): Senior Matt VandeBerg is emerging as a top target in the Big Ten after setting a career high with 129 yards receiving last week and boasts 11 catches for 228 overall. Beathard has completed 32-of-48 passes for 427 yards and the ground attack provides balance with junior Akrum Wadley and senior LeShun Daniels Jr. combining for 365 yards and six touchdowns. Senior defensive back Desmond King and junior linebacker Josey Jewell key the defense and freshman end Anthony Nelson leads the Big Ten with 3.5 sacks.

          EXTRA POINTS

          1. The Hawkeyes, who open Big Ten play at Rutgers next week, are 10-for-10 in the red zone this season with nine touchdowns and a field goal.

          2. North Dakota LB Nick DeLuca was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 tackles against Eastern Washington.

          3. The teams meet for the third time after Iowa won in 1946 and 1947 by a combined score of 98-0.

PREDICTION: Iowa 41, North Dakota State 21

            Preview: Georgia State at Wisconsin

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wisconsin

Life is good in Madison these days as Wisconsin has quickly joined the conversation as being one of the top teams in a top-heavy Big Ten conference. And there are plenty of reasons to believe that the trend will continue Saturday when the 12th-ranked Badgers host Georgia State.

Wisconsin followed up its Week 1 upset of LSU with a 54-10 pasting of Akron and can extend a non-conference winning streak that would be the sixth-longest in NCAA history at 37. The Badgers are 74-9 at Camp Randall Stadium since 2004 and shouldn’t be tested against the third-year full FBS member school from Atlanta. Wisconsin running back Corey Clement said the team, unranked during the preseason, has remained grounded and that “we want to do that every week no matter (where) we’re ranked. We have to approach every game as if we’re not in the rankings at all.’’ Georgia State’s first game against a Big Ten foe is part of a process that has seen the team improve from 1-11 in 2014 to a strong finish and 6-7 mark a year ago.

TV: Noon ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Wisconsin -34

ABOUT GEORGIA STATE (0-2): The Panthers’ defense struggled during a 48-14 loss to Air Force last week, surrendering 531 total yards while spending 45:14 on the field. Senior wide receiver Robert Davis has 166 career receptions, nine behind the program’s all-time leader and current Kansas City Chief Albert Wilson. Offensively, Georgia State will need much more than the 27 rushing yards it mustered against Air Force to stay close with the Badgers.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (2-0): Defense has done it for the Badgers as it has allowed only one touchdown, created five turnovers and stopped 17 of 20 third-down conversions through two weeks. The return of linebacker T.J. Edwards has been a big boost, but the loss of junior cornerback and top kick returner Natrell Jamerson (leg) for at least the next month is tough news for a team that plays four Big Ten foes ranked in the top 11 before the end of October. Running back Corey Clement ran 21 times for 111 yards last week before leaving with what was deemed as a non-serious injury to his left leg late in the second quarter.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. Wisconsin ranks second nationally in time of possession at 38:54.

            2. Georgia State increased its win total by five from 2014 to 2015, a margin topped only by Southern Miss and Washington State (six).

            3. Only seven of the top 46 players listed on Wisconsin’s depth chart are seniors.

PREDICTION: Wisconsin 56, Georgia State 6

                Preview: Miami at Appalachian State

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Kidd Brewer Stadium, Boone, North Carolina

After two one-sided victories, No. 25 Miami faces its first true test Saturday against a dangerous Appalachian State team in what is sure to be a hostile environment. The Hurricanes put up 108 points while allowing a mere 13 in home wins against over-matched Florida A&M and Florida Atlantic, but as the first Power-5 conference team to ever visit Boone, N.C., will be facing the fired-up Mountaineers in front of a rabid crowd.

"For them to be home and us go there, and the excitement I know that's drawing from what I understand, it has got to be a huge day for their program," Miami coach Mark Richt said during a news conference this week. "I can't imagine them not being super hyped, ready to go." The Hurricanes have shown signs of being ready for such a test, having dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. After depending on junior Brad Kaaya's arm to carry the offense for two seasons, the Hurricanes are averaging 326 yards a game rushing while the defense has allowed only 34.5 yards on the ground to rank first in the nation despite starting a front seven dominated by freshmen and sophomores. Those young guys will face a big test against the Mountaineers, who are run-first team and feature one the nation's best running backs in senior Marcus Cox, who entered the season with 4,088 yards rushing and has added 248 yards already this season.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN. Line: Miami -3.5

ABOUT APPALACHIAN STATE (1-1): With 17 returning starters from a team that finished 11-2 in its first season as an FBS member, the Mountaineers were expected to be good and proved that in taking then-No. 10 Tennessee to overtime before losing 20-13 in the opener on a fumble recovery in the end zone by the Vols. The defense, led by linemen Antonious Sims (seven solo tackles, three sacks) and Caleb Fuller (two sacks) along with linebackers Eric Boggs (nine tackles) and Kennan Gilchrist (eight), held Tennessee to 3 yards per carry and only 319 total yards but did allow a disappointing 5.1 yards per carry against FCS foe Old Dominion in last week's 31-7 win. Cox is the offensive focal point but the Mountaineers also have a veteran quarterback in junior Taylor Lamb who has started 25 games and thrown 49 TD passes.

ABOUT MIAMI (2-0): Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz promised Miami would play an attacking style, and that has been the case with the Hurricanes leading the nation with 28 tackles for loss and tied for second in sacks with 10 with freshmen linebackers Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney, who had nine tackles against Florida Atlantic, and sophomore defensive linemen R.J. McIntosh and Demetrius Jackson leading the way. Miami ranks No. 2 nationally at 8.69 yards per carry with sophomore tailback Mark Walton (271 yards, five TDs, 8.5 yards per carry) and junior Joe Yearby (224 yards, three TDs, 8.4) off to blazing starts. Kaaya is coming off one of his poorest games -- two interceptions and no scoring passes -- but his history and a talented receiving corps suggests he'll rebound from a slow start.

                EXTRA POINTS:

                1. Miami's starting offensive line (312-pound average) could wear down a talented but undersized Appalachian State defensive front seven (235-pound average).

                2. The Kidd Brewer Stadium attendance of record of 31,523 is expected to be broken for Miami's much-anticipated visit to Boone.

                3. Richt has vowed to cut down on Miami's nation-high penalty rate of last season but with nine last week, the Hurricanes currently rank 86th with 15 in two games.

PREDICTION: Miami 28, Appalachian State 20

Preview: Iowa State at Texas Christian

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, Texas

TCU is out of the rankings and hoping it isn't out of the national playoff picture as it opens Big 12 play with a home encounter against wobbly Iowa State on Saturday. The Horned Frogs suffered a 41-38 double-overtime loss to Arkansas last weekend and a second early-season defeat would eliminate them quickly this season after they were part of the postseason conversation each of the past two seasons.

TCU coach Gary Patterson is unhappy with a defense allowing averages of 41 points and 432 yards per game but made it known to his players that the season isn't over due to a September nonconference loss. "We lost one ballgame. We didn't lose 10," Patterson said after the program's fourth loss in 28 games since the start of the 2014 campaign. "I told these guys, 'You've got 10 more chances.'" The Horned Frogs certainly don't have the type of issues that plague the Cyclones, who lost to Northern Iowa in their opener before being drubbed 42-3 by in-state rival Iowa in their first two games under new coach Matt Campbell. "We just need to watch the film, study what we did well and what we did wrong, be able to correct our mistakes," junior standout receiver Allen Lazard told reporters. "We need to go into next week with a positive mindset and be very optimistic."

TV: Noon ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: TCU -24

ABOUT IOWA STATE (0-2, 0-0 Big 12): One of the few bright spots for the Cyclones is the play of Lazard, who has topped 100 receiving yards in both games, has 13 receptions for 240 yards and one touchdown and has caught at least one pass in a school-record 25 consecutive games. Junior quarterback Joel Lanning is completing just 54.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 342 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore weak-side linebacker Reggan Northrup has 19 tackles to lead a shaky defense that is allowing averages of 33.5 points and 215 rushing yards.

ABOUT TCU (1-1, 0-0): Junior quarterback Kenny Hill has been productive with both his arm (816 yards, three touchdowns) and legs (138 yards, five touchdowns) in his first two games as the starter. Sophomore receiver KaVontae Turpin is emerging as an all-purpose star with 14 receptions for 188 yards as well as averages of 34 yards on kickoff returns and 28.8 yards (and one touchdown) on punt returns. Junior middle linebacker Sammy Douglas is coming off a career-best 17-tackle performance against Arkansas while senior defensive ends Josh Carraway (12 career sacks) and James McFarland (11 1/2) are solid pass rushers.

                    EXTRA POINTS

                    1. TCU has won six of the previous seven meetings, including a 45-21 road win last season.

                    2. Cyclones DE Mitchell Meyers (two tackles for loss) missed all of last season due to a battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

                    3. The Horned Frogs have allowed six touchdown passes without recording an interception.

PREDICTION: TCU 44, Iowa State 23

                        Preview: Ohio at Tennessee

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
                        Where: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee

With the spectacle of playing at a NASCAR track before more than 150,000 fans behind it, No. 15 Tennessee returns to the normal environment of some 100,000 partisans at Neyland Stadium when it hosts Ohio on Saturday. The Volunteers erased an early 14-point deficit by scoring 31 straight en route to a 45-24 victory over Virginia Tech before 156,990 at Bristol Motor Speedway last week, and Tennessee senior defensive end Corey Vereen was quick to put that game in the past.

"We treat every game the same,'' Vereen said at Monday's weekly press conference. "Obviously, it was a spectacle last week with the fans and everything but it's a one-week season. We are treating Ohio like it's the game of the week. Every team is the same for us. We attack whomever head on and play football." The Volunteers are led by senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who bounced back from a subpar season opener to throw three touchdown passes while rushing for 106 yards and two scores against the Hokies. Dobbs, echoing Vereen, told reporters: "Ohio is a veteran team and it's a noon kickoff, so we need to start fast and be ready to go from the get-go. But this is the most important game on our schedule because it's the next game.'' The high-scoring Bobcats, who were picked to finish second in the East Division of the Mid-American Conference, won at Kansas 37-21 last week after a season-opening 56-54 loss in three overtimes to Texas State.

TV: Noon ET, SEC Network. LINE: Tennessee -27.5

ABOUT OHIO (1-1): While senior quarterback Greg Windham has already thrown for 560 yards and five touchdowns this season, the Bobcats proved they can also run the ball by boasting two runners with more than 100 yards last week for the first time since 2005. Windham (146 yards, touchdown) and junior running back Dorian Brown (122) slashed through the Kansas' defense with career-high performances to lead a 329-yard rushing attack. Windham's top targets are senior wide receiver Jordan Reid (nine catches, 152 yards, two touchdowns) and sophomore running back Papi White (9-154-1).

ABOUT TENNESSEE (2-0): The Volunteers nearly had a pair of 100-yard rushers against the Hokies as junior running back Jalen Hurd rushed for 99 and averages 104.5. Junior wide receiver Josh Malone made his four catches count this season as they've gone for 127 yards and two touchdowns. The defense is led by sophomore linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. (16 tackles, 11 solo) and senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin (15, 10), who combined for 20 (15 solo) last week.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. The Volunteers own an eight-game winning streak - their longest since a 14-game run spanning 1998 and 1999 - and have won 24 straight games against unranked non-conference opponents, beginning with a 34-23 victory over the Bobcats in 2009 in their only meeting.

                        2. Ohio redshirt junior LB Chad Moore recorded seven tackles (five solo) versus Kansas and was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week.

                        3. Dobbs moved into sixth on Tennessee's total career yards list with 5,964 and became the all-time leading rusher by a quarterback at the school with 1,431 yards, passing the late Jimmy Streater (1,374). Peyton Manning is first on all-time yards list with (11,020).

                            Preview: New Mexico at Rutgers

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: High Points Solutions Stadium, Piscataway, New Jersey

Avoiding the slow starts that have plagued it in the first two games will be the first order of business for Rutgers when it faces visiting New Mexico on Saturday in a non-conference game. After falling behind by 24 points in its opener against Washington, the Scarlet Knights staked FCS team Howard to 14 points before roaring back to give coach Chris Ash his first victory.

"Do I think our team was prepared and ready to play in both weeks. Yeah I do," Ash told the media of his team's slow starts. "We can't do that against a really good quality opponent or we'll put ourselves in a hole we can't get out of." Janarion Grant helped the Scarlet Knights erase the deficit against Howard as he returned a kickoff for a touchdown before adding a pair of scoring runs, including a 58-yarder. The Rutgers' defense took it from there, limiting Howard to five total yards in the second half and needs to be on its toes this week against the option attack of New Mexico. The Scarlet Knights catch a break as the Lobos' leading rusher Teriyon Gipson will miss the game while in the concussion protocol. New Mexico has several other capable runners including Tyrone Owens, and quarterback Austin Apodaca's ability to run and pass can provide a tough test for any defense.

TV: Noon ET, ESPNews. LINE: Rutgers -5.5

ABOUT NEW MEXICO (1-1): The Lobos, who are coming off a 32-31 loss to New Mexico State, will also be without their top defensive player in linebacker Dakota Cox (concussion protocol). Cox, who was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of Week after the season opener against North Dakota, could prove more difficult to replace as the senior has racked up 20 tackles (2.5 tackles for loss), a sack and an interception for Kevin Cosgrove's defense. The job of covering for Cox will likely fall to redshirt junior Kimmie Carson, who is tied for second on the team in tackles, senior Donnie White and sophomore Alex Hart.

ABOUT RUTGERS (1-1): While still limited in his overall effectiveness, quarterback Chris Laviano was able to make some positive plays in the passing game against Howard. The redshirt junior, who could be playing for his job against New Mexico, only managed to connect with 50 percent of his passes for 137 yards, but threw three touchdown passes. "Chris Laviano is still our starter, but we're still evaluating that position just like we are several positions," Ash told the media. "If we feel like the production isn't there, we'll look at other options."

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Giovanni Rescigno and Tylin Oden each saw time at quarterback for Rutgers in the second half against Howard, but neither attempted a pass.

                            2. Grant leads the Scarlet Knights in rushing (137 yards) and receiving (80 yards) while averaging 32.5 yards on six kickoff returns.

                            3. This will be New Mexico's first game against an opponent from the Big Ten.

PREDICTION: Rutgers 37, New Mexico 27
