Preview: Boston College at Virginia Tech

When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
    Where: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Virginia

Mistakes plagued Virginia Tech before the largest crowd in college football history, and the Hokies hope to clean up their act before their ACC opener Saturday against visiting Boston College. "I think we certainly know the things that we must work on now to have success," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente told reporters this week. "One is we need to be more disciplined with this football. The most disappointing thing in the last two weeks has been the lack of discipline."

The Hokies fumbled the ball away five times in a 45-24 loss to Tennessee in front of 156,990 at Bristol Motor Speedway, and they've lost an FBS-high nine on the season. They have a minus-4 turnover margin through two games and will be facing a stout Eagles defense that forced three turnovers in a 26-7 win over Massachusetts last weekend. Patrick Towles threw for his first two touchdowns in a Boston College uniform and also led the Eagles with 66 rushing yards as his team snapped a nine-game losing streak dating to last Sept. 26. Included in that slide was a 26-10 loss to Virginia Tech at home last Halloween, one of nine consecutive ACC losses for the Eagles.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: Virginia Tech -6

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (1-1): Towles has been so-so in his first two games under center, completing 59 percent of his passes with two TDs - both to leading receiver Jeff Smith - and two interceptions. The grad transfer won't need to be a superstar most weeks as long as the defense - which allowed 122 total yards (minus-23 on the ground) against the Minutemen - remains as dominant as the one that led the ACC last year. "I'm really happy with the development of our defense," coach Steve Addazio told reporters at his weekly press conference. "Fundamentally, our defense is much-improved. We've grown with great technique, not just scheme, but fundamentals."

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (1-1): Quarterback Jerod Evans has been involved in a few of the Hokies' lost fumbles, but he has yet to throw an interception and has five touchdown passes. The junior threw for four scores in a season-opening win against Liberty and was an impressive 20-of-28 versus Tennessee. Travon McMillian leads the way on the ground with 166 yards and Isaiah Ford has been Evans' favorite target with 16 catches for 168 yards and a score.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Virginia Tech is 62-1 at home against unranked teams since 1996, the lone loss coming against Boston College in 2014 by a 33-31 margin.

    2. Ford needs 10 receiving yards to become the sixth player in school history with 2,000 in his career.

    3. Eagles K Mike Knoll made both of his field-goal attempts against UMass after Colton Lichtenberg went 0-for-2 in the season-opening loss to Georgia Tech.

PREDICTION: Virginia Tech 20, Boston College 17

        Preview: Pittsburgh at Oklahoma State

When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater, Oklahoma

After one of the most bizarre finishes in college football history, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had a hard time sleeping. If his Cowboys can't return their focus to the football field this week, his previously 17th-ranked squad could be staring at another long night when a solid Pittsburgh team visits Saturday.

"I felt like I would be able to go to bed, but I couldn't," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy told reporters after Saturday's 30-27 loss to Central Michigan when a misinterpreted rule extended the game one untimed down and allowed the Chippewas to score the winning touchdown on a Hail Mary and lateral. “When I'm involved in a game like that, it will come across my mind 500 times if I live long enough, whether I'm driving, sitting in the shower, sleeping, forever." The Cowboys tried to kill the final four seconds of the game by throwing the ball away on fourth down with time expired, but they were incorrectly penalized for intentional grounding, setting up the 51-yard play. Pittsburgh, entering off a stirring 42-39 victory over in-state rival Penn State in the Keystone Classic, is seeking to boost its top-25 credentials by starting 3-0 for just the fourth time since 2000.

TV: 3:30 pm ET, ESPN. LINE: Oklahoma State -6.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (2-0): The Panthers raced to a 28-7 first-half lead against the Nittany Lions but needed a late fourth-quarter, end-zone interception by Ryan Lewis to hold off a second-half charge. In his second game back after overcoming knee surgery and Hodgkin lymphoma, James Conner rushed for 117 yards and scored two TDs to join Tony Dorsett as the only players in school history with 40 touchdowns. The defense has been opportunistic, tying for the FBS lead in sacks (five per game) while also ranking sixth by forcing three turnovers per game.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (1-1): Justice Hill (12 carries for 61 yards) and Chris Carson (12 for 45) are emerging as the lead backs, but the Cowboys average just three yards per rush and 97 yards per game while Pittsburgh is holding opponents to 63.5 yards per contest - 11th in FBS. Quarterback Mason Rudolph averaged 14.3 yards per completion last season - tops among all returning FBS starters - but hasn't been getting the ball downfield effectively thus far, completing a combined 45 passes for just 477 yards in the loss and 61-7 win over Southeastern Louisiana. The Cowboys defense, spearheaded by tackle Vincent Taylor and safety Jordan Sterns, who entered the season fifth among all Power-5 defensive backs in tackles (234), leads FBS with five fumbles recovered, ranks second with two defensive touchdowns and 10th with a plus-two turnover margin.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Pitt RB Quadree Henderson is averaging 53.5 yards per kickoff return and 14.5 yards per punt return. He returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against Villanova and added a crucial 84-yard return against Penn State last week.

        2. Oklahoma State is 25-2 in non-conference home games under Gundy, who took over the Cowboys in 2005.

        3. The teams, meeting for the first time, are set to play again next season at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

            Preview: South Florida at Syracuse

When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, New York

USF aims for its first 3-0 start since 2011 when it visits Syracuse on Saturday in a non-league contest. The Bulls have racked up 104 points through two games and enter the weekend ranked 10th in the nation in scoring and 17th in yards per game.

The Bulls are coming off one of the most impressive offensive performances in school history, as they totaled 658 yards - their second-most ever - in improving to 9-2 over their last 11 games. "It was good to get so many guys get involved and contribute," coach Willie Taggart said to the media after the 48-17 romp versus Northern Illinois. Among the top contributors that day was Quinton Flowers (350 passing yards, four TDs), who did the heavy lifting while starting tailback Marlon Mack (concussion) sat out. USF could be in for another big offensive output against a Syracuse squad that allowed 845 yards - 13 shy of the ACC record - in last week's loss to Louisville.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network, ESPN3. LINE: USF -14.5

ABOUT USF (2-0): Flowers has accounted for eight touchdowns - six passing - over the first two games and is looking for more success against Syracuse, which he torched for 300-plus total yards and three touchdowns a season ago. Mack, who registered 184 rushing yards and two scores in that contest, is expected to return Saturday after missing the last 1 1/2 games. The Bulls certainly have not missed him much, as they have eight scoring drives of under two minutes this season and have not needed more than four minutes for any scoring drive all year.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (1-1): Eric Dungey passed for three touchdowns and ran for another against Louisville, but obviously the defense was a major issue, as the team allowed 10.4 yards per play and surrendered 610 total yards to Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson. "I thought our defense, even though the numbers are not good, it was a 14-point game going into the fourth quarter with an amazing quarterback and an amazing football team where they're playing an enormous amount of reps," first-year coach Dino Babers said afterward. Amba Etta-Tawo has been a standout for the Orange on the young season, totaling 20 catches for 313 yards and three TDs through two games.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. Both teams were members of the Big East from 2005-12. USF went 6-2 against Syracuse during that stretch and leads the all-time series 7-2.

            2. The Bulls won last year's meeting, 45-24, beginning the current 9-2 stretch that the team carries into this weekend's action.

            3. The Bulls have scored first in 12 of their last 14 games.

            PREDICTION: USF 42, Syracuse 35

Preview: New Mexico State at Kentucky

When: 4:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
                Where: Commonwealth Stadium, Lexington, Kentucky

Jordan Jones raised some eyebrows after last week's 45-7 loss to No. 23 Florida when he implied that some of his Kentucky teammates gave up, telling reporters: “Sometimes when we’re down, a lot of people on our team just tend to quit and think it’s over, and I don’t think it’s over until it’s actually over.” The Wildcats hope to prove their star sophomore linebacker wrong and right the ship when they host New Mexico State on Saturday.

“I don’t know exactly what his intent was, but Jordan backs it up,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said Monday during his weekly press conference. “I wouldn’t use the word ‘quit.’ I’d like to say I’d rather have guys respond the way he does. I think that’s a beautiful quote for you guys, but I don’t think he means it that way. I think he means it that we need to respond.” Jones has registered an SEC-high 28 tackles this season - third nationally - and is one of the few bright spots on a squad that allowed Southern Miss to score the final 34 points in a season-opening 44-35 loss. The Wildcats must get more from sophomore quarterback Drew Barker (50 percent completion rate, four touchdowns, four interceptions), who was 2-of-10 for 10 yards versus Florida. The Aggies, picked to finish ninth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll, are coming off a 32-31 victory over rival New Mexico after dropping their season opener 38-22 to UTEP.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Kentucky -19.5

ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE (1-1): The Aggies are led by senior quarterback Tyler Rogers, who is 38-for-76 with two touchdowns this season while totaling a team-high 84 rushing yards and a score. Junior running back Larry Rose III, the reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year and New Mexico State's No. 5 all-time rusher with 2,753 yards in his first two seasons, has yet to make his 2016 debut and is doubtful to play Saturday because of a sports hernia. The Wildcats must try to steer clear of senior linebacker Rodney Butler, who recorded a career-high 24 tackles last week - two shy of the school record - and leads the nation at 19.5 per game.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (0-2): Junior running back Stanley Boom Williams is off to a solid start by averaging 6.4 yards on 25 carries. Junior wide receiver Garrett Johnson recorded six catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns versus Southern Miss, but was kept off the scoresheet against Florida. The secondary is led by junior cornerback J.D. Harmon, who has two interceptions (seven career), one break up and two passes defended.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. The Wildcats have forced a turnover in eight consecutive games and lead the SEC with four interceptions this season, but own a minus-3 turnover margin.

                2. New Mexico State is 0-19 versus the SEC.

                3. Kentucky is being dominated in time of possession by an average of 38:59 to 21:01.

PREDICTION: Kentucky 42, New Mexico State 22

Preview: East Carolina at South Carolina

When: 4:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina

Not long ago, South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium had become one of the tougher places to play in the SEC East, if not the nation, but the Gamecocks have had a tough time defending their turf recently. The Gamecocks hope to change that trend when they host East Carolina for their home opener Saturday.

South Carolina has lost three straight at home and is trying to avoid its first four-game skid at Williams-Brice since dropping 11 in a row there from 1998-99. “The great programs that have a home-field advantage, it has a lot to do with the fan base,” first-year Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp told reporters. “But it has more to do with the team that’s playing on the field and playing well.” The Pirates are looking for a second straight win over a Power Five opponent after knocking off North Carolina State 33-30 last week. The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 13-5 and have won all three meetings since the rivalry was renewed in 2011.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: South Carolina -3

ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (2-0): The Pirates rolled up 688 total yards in a season-opening 52-7 win over Western Carolina, and they proved it wasn’t simply a product of their competition by racking up 445 yards against N.C. State. Quarterback Philip Nelson leads the nation with an 81.3 completion percentage and has completed passes to eight different receivers, though his top target is senior Zay Jones, who leads all active FBS players in receptions (258) and ranks fourth in receiving yards (2,786). The defense had its issues stopping the Wolfpack on the ground, allowing 6.9 yards per carry.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (1-1): The struggling offense is a concern for the Gamecocks, who have averaged just 13.5 points in their first two games. Muschamp didn’t announce a starting quarterback this week, saying it will be a game-time decision whether veteran Perry Orth or freshman Brandon McIlwain gets the nod, both of whom have been inconsistent in the passing game. The bigger concern in last week’s 27-14 loss at Mississippi State was the Gamecocks’ shoddy tackling, which will have to improve as East Carolina averages 211.5 rushing yards per game and South Carolina allows 229.5 per game on the ground.

                    EXTRA POINTS

                    1. South Carolina has lost two straight home openers after winning its previous seven.

                    2. East Carolina is 6-27 all-time against current SEC teams and has lost seven straight against the league since a 21-3 win at South Carolina in 1999.

                    3. Jones has caught a pass in 37 consecutive games dating to 2013, the fourth-longest active streak among FBS players.

PREDICTION: South Carolina 30, East Carolina 27

                        Preview: Western Michigan at Illinois

When: 4:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
                        Where: Memorial Stadium, Champaign, Illinois

Illinois looks to bounce back from its first loss of the Lovie Smith era when it hosts Western Michigan on Saturday. The Fighting Illini dropped a 48-23 decision to North Carolina in front of their first sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium in five years, and they hope to regroup quickly to fend off the dangerous Broncos, who have already knocked off one Big Ten opponent this season.

Illinois has won four out of five meetings against Western Michigan - including victories in 2011 (23-20) and 2012 (24-7) - and can improve to 24-3 in August/September home games since the beginning of the 2007 season. "Western Michigan is a good football team," Smith told reporters. "Looking at the schedule before the season started we knew this would be one of those games which will truly measure how far we've come and that will be the case." Western Michigan followed up a 22-21 upset over Northwestern by thrashing North Carolina Central 70-21 to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 1994. The Broncos are in a confident mood as they hope to beat two Big Ten opponents in a single season for the first time in school history.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, ESPNews. LINE: Illinois +3.5

ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN (2-0): Zach Terrell completed 15-of-22 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Broncos to their highest offensive output since 1994. Corey Davis, the active FBS leader in receiving yards, caught seven passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns against North Carolina Central to go over the 4,000-yard mark for his career. "There is a lot of opportunities for other players but Corey will still always be our big dog," Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck told reporters. "We are going to go in with our normal game plan to get a win on Saturday."

ABOUT ILLINOIS (1-1): Wes Lunt struggled mightily in the loss to North Carolina as he went 17-of-35 for just 127 yards, but threw two touchdown passes and needs two more to move to past Johnny Johnson for eighth place on the Illini's all-time list. Kendrick Foster, who set a school record by averaging 29.5 yards per carry in the season-opening win against Murray State, was one of 40 players named to the Dante Hall Award Watch List, which honors the best offensive or special teams player who is under six feet tall. Junior wide receiver Malik Turner is off to a hot start as three of his six catches have resulted in touchdowns.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Illinois DE Carroll Phillips is tied for the FBS lead with 6 1/2 tackles for loss.

                        2. Davis needs 183 more receiving yards to pass Jordan White (4,187) for first place on Western Michigan's all-time list.

                        3. Fighting Illini LB Hardy Nickerson has made at least 10 tackles in eight of his last 10 games.

PREDICTION: Western Michigan 28, Illinois 27
