            Preview: Florida State at Louisville

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, Louisville, Kentucky

Lamar Jackson has compiled 1,015 yards of total offense and accounted for 13 touchdowns in less than two full games for Louisville, so it goes without saying Florida State wouldn't mind having all hands on deck defensively. Unfortunately, that won't be the case for the second-ranked Seminoles on Saturday, when they visit the 10th-ranked Cardinals.

Florida State rolled to a 52-8 victory over FCS foe Charleston Southern last weekend, but it came at a substantial price as preseason All-American sophomore safety Derwin James suffered a cartilage tear in his left knee, sidelining him indefinitely. Although the Seminoles will be shorthanded defensively, they should have more than enough firepower on the other side of the ball to stick with FBS' highest-scoring team thus far, as running back Dalvin Cook has already accounted for 284 total yards and two touchdowns in limited action. While Cook has done nothing to hurt his campaign for the Heisman Trophy, Jackson has raced out to an early lead in that regard by ranking third in the country in rushing (318 yards) and eighth in passing (697) while leading Louisville to an average of 66 points in routs over Charlotte and Syracuse. The Cardinals will also be seeking revenge after losing halftime leads against the Seminoles in each of their first two clashes as conference rivals, getting outscored by a combined 70-24 in the second half.

TV: Noon ET, ABC. LINE: Florida State -2.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (2-0, 0-0 ACC): James played near the line of scrimmage and received much of the credit for holding Jackson to only 32 yards rushing in last season's 41-21 win - a "spy" role that could fall into the lap of linebacker Matthew Thomas this time around. Junior Travis Rudolph burned Charleston Southern for seven catches, 105 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, allowing him to earn the second ACC Receiver of the Week award of his career and become the fifth Seminole to win a conference player of the week award this season. Cook tallied 192 yards from scrimmage in the opener against Ole Miss before settling for 92 in a little over two quarters last week, but he amassed 223 total yards in last year's meeting.

ABOUT LOUISVILE (2-0, 1-0): Jackson set an ACC record with 610 total yards of offense last week versus the Orange and became the first player in FBS history to record over 400 yards passing (411) and 175 yards (199) in the same game, helping the Cardinals set another school record with 845 total yards. Jackson and Brandon Radcliff (156) each topped 100 yards rushing, while receivers Jamari Staples (136) and James Quick (108) each went over 100 yards receiving, giving Louisville its first pair of 100-yard rushers and 100-yard receivers in the same game. The Cardinals are averaging a FBS-best 754 yards of total offense - 138 more than Baylor's top-ranked offense from a season ago and 338 more than Louisville averaged in 2015.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. The Cardinals have won only two of 16 meetings in this series and are 1-5 at home against the Seminoles, collecting their only such victory in 2002.

            2. Florida State has allowed more 20-plus-yard pass plays than any team in a Power 5 conference (11), while Louisville leads the nation with the most such plays (15).

            3. Seminoles senior safety Nate Andrews, who has missed the first two games of his career with a calf injury, is expected to return this week.

PREDICTION: Louisville 45, Florida State 41

                Preview: Vanderbilt at Georgia Tech

When: 12:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

Georgia Tech’s defense stayed on the field far too long in last week’s victory over Mercer, and getting quick stops will be a priority Saturday as the Yellow Jackets host Vanderbilt. Georgia Tech only allowed one touchdown in a 35-10 triumph last week, but Mercer picked up first downs on seven of its nine possessions, a number that must improve considering Vanderbilt features one of the SEC’s better running backs in Ralph Webb.

“We’ve been bend but don’t break for two weeks,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson told reporters. “We need some three-and-outs.” Webb rushed for 211 yards – the most by a Commodores player in 38 years – in Vanderbilt’s 47-24 victory over Middle Tennessee State last week. “I’ll take him over any other running back in the conference,” Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason told the media in describing Webb’s performance. Webb’s start has been welcomed given the Commodores’ inconsistent passing game. Quarterback Kyle Shurmur misfired on his first seven passes last week before hitting on 13-of-14 attempts, after an 8-for-22 performance in a season-opening loss to South Carolina.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network. LINE: Georgia Tech -6.5

ABOUT VANDERBILT (1-1): Webb already has 308 yards on the ground through two games and is 776 yards from matching Zac Stacy’s career school record, but Shurmur has completed just 46 percent of his passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Zach Cunningham has recorded 10 tackles or more in six consecutive games dating back to last season. Special teams continue to be an issue – Vanderbilt has been penalized in each of its first two games for booting a kickoff out of bounds, and a blocked punt set up a Middle Tennessee State touchdown last week.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (2-0): The Yellow Jackets’ defense was on the field for 29:42 against Mercer, giving up 320 yards to a FCS school in its fourth season of competition, but Georgia Tech rushed for a more Georgia-Tech like 364 yards after struggling in a season-opening victory over Boston College. Running back Qua Searcy, injured for most of 2015, sparked the ground game with 91 rushing yards (averaging 13 yards per carry). Quarterback Justin Thomas missed part of the Mercer game with what was described as a minor injury, but is expected to start Saturday.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. Georgia Tech freshman Dedrick Mills, who rushed for 68 yards against Boston College, is expected to play after being suspended for the Mercer game due to an unspecified violation of team rules.

                2. Vanderbilt plays its next two games on the road (Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky) before opening SEC play against Florida.

                3. The Yellow Jackets and Commodores are among five FBS teams averaging fewer than 100 passing yards per game (Georgia Tech 99.5; Vanderbilt 93).

                    Preview: Virginia at Connecticut

When: 1:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
Where: Rentschler Field, East Hartford, Connecticut

Poor clock management cost Connecticut dearly in its comeback bid against Navy last week and brought out a slew of critics aiming their barbs at coach Bob Diaco. The Huskies on Saturday look to rebound from their embarrassing finish a week ago when they host Virginia, which was routed at No. 21 Oregon last week and has lost 16 consecutive road games.

Connecticut dropped a 28-24 decision to the Midshipmen with its final drive ending on a second down at the Navy 1-yard line after running the ball with 17 seconds remaining. UConn's offense, though, was disorganized and could not run another play. The Cavaliers were never in it against the Ducks, trailing 30-6 at the half en route to a 44-26 loss after dropping a home game to FCS foe Richmond in coach Bronco Mendenhall's coaching debut. Following a year away from the field after transferring from East Carolina, Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert threw five touchdown passes in his two games for the Cavaliers, but also threw three interceptions and was sacked nine times -- a major point of concern for Mendenhall.

                    TV: 1:30 p.m. ET, SNY, ESPN3. LINE: Connecticut -4.5

ABOUT VIRGINIA (0-2): The Cavaliers are off to a shaky start as they had negative rushing yardage heading into the fourth quarter of their season-opening loss and watched Oregon rack up 632 yards of offense last week. Mendenhall has his hands full switching his base defense to a 3-4 while guiding a team that hasn't won on the road since 2012 - a 33-6 victory over North Carolina State. Running back Albert Reid rushed for a career-high 126 yards at Oregon last week and has topped the century in two of his last three games.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (1-1): Last week's finish was a mess and Diaco took full responsibility after the Huskies managed to erase a 21-0 deficit. "This is no one's fault other than mine," Diaco told reporters. "If you're looking for someone to blame I'm standing here ready to take it." Quarterback Bryant Shirreffs certainly had a hand in the final sequence but has been superb to start the season, going 23-for-26 against Navy while wide receiver Noel Thomas already has 20 receptions.

                    EXTRA POINTS

                    1. Diaco’s first career game as a head coach came in 2014 as UConn faced Mendenhall’s BYU squad and the visiting Cougars rolled 35-10.

                    2. Virginia, which is ranked 125th among the 128 FBS teams in the nation in total defense, hasn't had a winning season since 2011.

                    3. The series is even at 1-1, with UConn winning the last meeting 45-10 in 2008.

                        Preview: Idaho at Washington State

When: 2:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 17, 2016
                        Where: Martin Stadium, Pullman, Washington

Washington State head coach Mike Leach has spent much of the early part of the season being angry with his team. He, along with the rest of the Cougars, will look to vent their collective frustrations Saturday as they host an Idaho Vandals' team coming off a one-sided loss to another Pac-12 team, getting routed 59-14 by No. 8 Washington.

Leach was irate with his players following last week's 31-28 road loss to Boise State, which came on the heels of a stunning 45-42 home loss to FCS Eastern Washington in the season opener. "We outperformed them in a ton of different ways but we're not tough enough," Leach said following the Boise State defeat. "And as a football team we have to get (a lot) tougher and right now we're not very tough." Leach was right to be frustrated, as his Cougars had six drives that reached Broncos territory but failed to produce any points. The Vandals opened the season with a 20-17 win over Montana State but failed to carry that momentum forward, allowing the Huskies to gain 482 total yards while turning the ball over three times.

TV: 2 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Washington State -24.5

ABOUT IDAHO (1-1): There wasn't much the Vandals could do last weekend after finding themselves in a 35-point deficit at halftime, but they did manage a pair of second-half touchdowns to ease head coach Paul Petrino's pain - at least a little. "We got whooped," he said afterward. "We got whooped but I thought our guys stayed fighting in the second half." Any shot at an upset Saturday will hinge on the performance of quarterback Matt Linehan, who is averaging a pedestrian 157.5 passing yards per game with only one touchdown through the air.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (0-2): As if Leach needed extra incentive in this one, he and Petrino share some animosity centered around the teams' previous meeting in 2013. Washington State led 42-0 late when the Vandals marched deep into Cougars territory, prompting Leach to put most of his starting defense back in the game in an effort to preserve the school's first shutout since 2003. Washington State preserved the blanking, but the two coaches exchanged heated words at the postgame handshake as Petrino took offense to Leach's tactics.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Washington State has won eight straight meetings in the series by a combined score of 340-93.

                        2. Cougars QB Luke Falk ranks second in the Pac-12 in passing yards (898) and touchdowns (eight) and is first in completion percentage (78.7).

                        3. Washington State has incurred a whopping 22 penalties for 180 yards through two games.

Kansas State is more than eager for Saturday’s game against visiting Florida Atlantic. The Wildcats are coming off an early bye week and are ready to atone for a season-opening setback against Stanford, and they’ll also be the last Big 12 Conference team to have their home opener.

"It has felt long," Kansas State defensive back D.J. Reed told the Kansas City Star earlier this week. "Watching everybody play on TV last week was hard. You want to play. ... We definitely want to get back out there, especially in our home stadium." Even veteran coach Bill Snyder, in his 25th season in Manhattan, says he has some extra anxiousness this week. "We’ve had 100 practices, and we haven’t played at home yet," Snyder said at his weekly news conference on Tuesday. "That is very uncommon for us. I sense the anxiety. I probably have a little bit of it myself, and I normally don’t." FAU, meanwhile, had anything but a week off last Saturday, losing at No. 25 Miami 38-10 to fall to 1-1.

ABOUT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (1-1): The Owls, of Conference USA, are in search of their first winning season since 2008. FAU started on the right foot with a 38-30 victory over Southern Illinois but then squandered some early opportunities against Miami – having only a field goal to show for five trips into Hurricanes territory – before the hosts put the game out of reach. Quarterback Jason Driskel (224.5 yards per game) and tailback Greg Howell (101.5 yards per game, three TDs) are the Owls’ offensive leaders while defensive end Trey Hendrickson, the Conference USA sacks leader a year ago, has totaled 2.5 tackles for loss and has blocked field goals in each of the first two contests.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (0-1): The Wildcats hung tough defensively against now-No. 6 Stanford in the opener before Heisman Trophy-candidate Christian McCaffrey broke things open with a 41-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Kansas State actually outgained Stanford 335-272, but an inexperienced offensive line, featuring a pair of freshman starters, has needed the bye week to try to patch things up after allowing eight sacks, including one for a safety. Junior quarterback Jesse Ertz, who is back after missing the 2015 season with a torn ACL, struggled to get much going in the opener, completing 16-of-34 passes for 207 yards, while senior strong safety Dante Barnett, the Wildcats’ defensive leader, had 2.5 tackles for loss and his first career sack in the game.

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Under Snyder, Kansas State is 22-2 in home openers and is 62-4 in home non-conference games.

                            2. This will be only the second meeting between the Wildcats and Owls, but Kansas State is 21-4 against Conference USA schools.

                            3. All but six players on the FAU roster are from Florida, including 23 of 24 starters.

PREDICTION: Kansas State 41, FAU 7
