  • Broncos have deal in place for Kaepernick

The San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch reports Broncos GM John Elway met with Colin Kaepernick in Denver on Thursday.

Branch reports Kaepernick and Elway have met "at least twice since March 15." This type of meeting would normally not be allowed, but the 49ers have granted Kaepernick permission to seek a trade. The Broncos reportedly want Kaepernick to agree to around a $5 million pay cut before they will green-light a trade, but he has little reason to take a big cut with his 2016 salary now fully guaranteed. Perhaps a smaller reduction paired with some guarantees in 2017 could get a deal done. These meetings suggest there is a real chance for the two sides to come to an agreement, but it is still anyone's guess where Kaepernick will play this season.

Niners have been holding out for what they want for a couple months - 2nd rounder from what I've heard. Don't know if Denver will give that up

Re: Broncos have deal in place for Kaepernick

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports Colin Kaepernick will report for the first day of the 49ers' offseason program on Monday.

The Broncos are still trying to work out a deal to bring the quarterback to Denver, but Kaepernick has $400,000 riding on his attendance during the offseason program. Kaepernick is unlikely to participate this week as he recovers from three offseason surgeries, but he should sit down with new coach Chip Kelly to discuss what his role could be in the new offense. The Broncos reportedly want to reduce Kaepernick's salary by about $5 million. If he feels comfortable with what Kelly tells him this week, he could opt to stay in San Francisco rather than take a big pay cut.
