Wiseguys share the hottest spot bet opportunities of the week
    By BEN BURNS

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you're betting. Whether it's a team looking past this week's opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots. Ben Burns points out a few of his favorites:

    Letdown spot

On Saturday, Oklahoma will host Kansas. That's a huge game for the Sooners, as those teams are battling for top spot in the Big 12. Additionally, the Sooners will be looking to avenge an earlier loss at Kansas. That wasn't just any loss either - it was a triple-OT heartbreaker.

Off that big "revenge" game, the Sooners may have a letdown in their next game, which will be at Texas Tech. After all, they beat the Red Raiders by 24 when the teams played on January 26.

    Lookahead spot

Regularly two of the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Conference, Siena and Iona have long been rivals. Last season, Iona won all three meetings. The Gaels took both regular season meetings and then knocked the Saints out of the MAAC tournament.

Saturday will be this season's first meeting between Iona and Siena and it’s a game which the Saints have had circled. On Thursday, Siena will host Canisius. Considering that the Saints already beat the Golden Griffins by 21 points, at Canisius, it should be easy to look ahead to Saturday's showdown. Canisisus snapped a losing streak last time out and will be looking for some redemption after getting embarrassed earlier. Take a look at the Golden Griffins as a road underdog Thursday.

    Schedule spot

The Nashville Predators are an ugly 10-23 (-12.6) when playing the second of back-to-back games the past few years, including 1-6 this season. They were dominated in those games too, getting outscored by a combined 25-10 margin. Five of the six losses came by multiple goals.

Part of the reason, perhaps, for the Preds' problems in back-to-back spots is a tendency to give No. 1 goalie Pekka Rinne the night off. He's only played back-to-back games once this season.

The Preds play Friday night and then again Saturday at Florida. While the Panthers will also be playing their second game in two nights, they've been much better than Nasvhille in that situation. The last time that the Panthers played a home game, after playing the previous night, they knocked off Tampa by a 5-2 score. Consider Florida Saturday night.

Preview: Ducks (20-4) at Golden Bears (15-8)

      Date: February 11, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

With a six-game winning streak, a 1 1/2-game conference lead and seven games remaining, the initial thought might be Oregon is favorably positioned for its first regular-season crown since 2001-02.

Then consider four of those remaining seven games are on the road beginning Thursday night with a California team that's yet to lose a home game of any kind this season, and coach Dana Altman is still rejecting his team being on any kind of inside track.

That could change for the 11th-ranked Ducks (20-4, 9-2) if they make it through the weekend with wins over the Golden Bears (15-8, 5-5) and two days later at Stanford, but that's a big if even for the conference leaders. Oregon is 15-0 at home with six Pac-12 wins but 4-3 in true road games, including 3-2 in the league with both losses coming at unranked opponents. Cal, meanwhile, is 14-0 at home with five conference victories highlighted by wins over then-No. 12 Arizona and then-No. 21 Utah.

"There's still so many teams in striking distance, and we have four very difficult road games (in the Bay Area this weekend, and Los Angeles in early March)," Altman told the team's official website. "We are in the lead at this point, but you've got Utah and Arizona there with five home games left, and the potential to have a big run here to finish the season. So we're just going to have to keep playing. I hope our guys keep the edge, because that's how we've been able to win a few games."

The winning streak is tough to ignore, particularly on the offensive end with the Ducks averaging 83.5 points on 48.1 percent after Sunday's 76-66 home win over Utah. Dillon Brooks scored 30 points on 12 of 22 and has averaged 20.4 points on 52.8 percent in his last eight games, yet his coach wants to see more from him defensively.

"People tend to put everything on the offensive end, and he had a great game offensively," Altman said. "He had a couple of communication gaps on the defensive end, and I don't know if it was his best (game), but it ranks right up there."

Yet offensive execution will be key against a stingy Cal team. The season series opened with Oregon's 68-65 home win on Jan. 6 as Brooks was limited to four points on 2-of-10 shooting. Chris Boucher scored 18 points to lead the Ducks to their second straight win in the series despite shooting 40.7 percent, but the Golden Bears had won the previous 12 meetings.

Last season's Oregon win came at Cal, but Haas Pavilion has been especially hostile territory this season. The Golden Bears' 15-game home winning streak dating back to the final game of last season is tied for their fifth longest ever.

This season's portion of the streak has come thanks in large part to Cal's Pac-12-leading scoring defense (66.7 points per game) and opponent field-goal percentage (38.8). After Saturday's 76-61 win over Stanford, those numbers are at 62.0 and 36.4 at home.

Cal has also shown some offensive depth lately. Jordan Mathews finished with a game-high 18 points and is averaging 15.2 in five straight games off the bench after starting the first 18 games with 12.9.

Fellow reserve Kameron Rooks had 11 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. It was a career-high scoring night while the 7-footer finished with a career high in rebounds for a second straight game.

"I'm just playing as hard as I can, crashing the glass and taking care of my defense," Rooks said.

Preview: Hawkeyes (19-4) at Hoosiers (19-5)

        Date: February 11, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Iowa hasn't been atop the Big Ten this late in a season in 10 years, and it's been much longer since it won a regular-season conference title.

The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes don't need a history lesson to know what's at stake over the last seven games, though, especially with two coming against an Indiana team also in the mix.

Iowa looks to extend its winning streak to four when it visits the Hoosiers on Thursday night in a matchup of the Big Ten's highest-scoring teams.

The Hawkeyes (19-4, 10-1) hold a half-game lead on No. 2 Maryland and sit in first place this deep into a campaign for the first time since 2005-06, when they last won the conference tournament title. They haven't won a regular-season championship since sharing it in 1979 and haven't won an outright title since 1970.

Coach Fran McCaffery insists winning the Big Ten is the furthest thing from his mind, but the importance of beating Indiana (19-5, 9-2) still stands in regards to the standings. Iowa is coming off Sunday's 77-65 win at Illinois and hasn't lost since falling 74-68 at Maryland on Jan. 28.

The Hawkeyes are averaging 78.5 points in conference play to lead the Big Ten, with the Hoosiers close behind at 78.2.

"It's going to be very up-tempo," said Iowa senior guard Mike Gesell, who needs two points to reach 1,000 for his career. "That's how we want to play, and they want to play that way, too."

Indiana is averaging a Big Ten-high 84.1 points overall - Iowa is second at 80.7 - but it was held in check Saturday at Penn State. The Hoosiers shot a season-low 36.2 percent and scored their second-fewest points in a 68-63 loss.

Nick Zeisloft scored 14 for Indiana, which shot 44.4 percent from 3-point range over its first 21 but has hit 28 percent over the last three.

"It just goes to show what kind of league this is," guard Robert Johnson said. "In the Big Ten, you have to come out every game with the same mindset and be prepared to go out there and battle."

Yogi Ferrell went 3 of 12 from the field and finished with 13 points while committing five turnovers, but McCaffery isn't putting much stock into one tough performance.

Ferrell is fourth in the Big Ten with 17.3 points per game - Iowa's Jarrod Uthoff is third at 18.4 - and third with a 47.4 field-goal percentage. The senior guard also is fourth with 5.8 assists per contest, just behind Gesell's 6.0 average that ranks third.

"Yogi is as tough a cover as there is out there," McCaffery said. "He's equally gifted at scoring the ball or finding other people."

Indiana coach Tom Crean knows slowing Uthoff is only part of the battle. Peter Jok is averaging 19.5 points over his last eight after scoring 23 against Illinois, and Adam Woodbury has four double-doubles in his last six.

The Hoosiers visit Iowa on March 1.

"They have so many guys who can score," Crean said. "The unselfishness that they play with, the ball movement they play with - the numbers certainly (show it). For us to win the game, we've really got to do a great job of not playing into their hands and getting back at a high rate defensively."

Uthoff scored 14 points and Ferrell finished with 11 while shooting 3 of 11 in Iowa's 77-63 win at Indiana in the last meeting March 3 to end a three-game skid in the series.

          Thursday's Tip Sheet
          By Brian Edwards

          **Florida State at Syracuse**

-- Both of these teams are 6-5 in ACC action and on the proverbial NCAA bubble, so this is a crucial ACC clash at the Carrier Dome on Thursday night. ESPN will provide the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- Syracuse (16-8 straight up, 11-12 against the spread) is No. 46 in the RPI Rankings, compiling a 5-4 record against the Top 50 and a 7-7 ledger versus the Top 100. The Orange have one bad loss outside of the RPI 100, dropping an 84-72 decision at St. John’s (RPI: 203). They own quality wins over St. Bonaventure, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech at home, in addition to road wins at Duke and at Wake Forest. Jim Boeheim’s squad also has a pair of neutral-court triumphs over UConn and Texas A&M.

-- Syracuse is 11-3 SU and 6-7 ATS at home.

-- Syracuse has won three in a row and six of its last seven, going 5-2 ATS during this surge. The Orange beat Va. Tech 68-60 in overtime last Tuesday, but it failed to cover the number as a nine-point home favorite. Boeheim’s bunch has had eight days to rest and prep for FSU since then. In the win over the Hokies, Michael Gbinije scored a team-high 16 points. Tyler Roberson added 12 points and 15 rebounds.

-- Gbinije is enjoying a stellar senior campaign, averaging a team-best 17.2 PPG. He also averages team-highs in assists (4.4 APG) and steals (2.3 SPG). Fellow senior Trevor Cooney is scoring at a 13.5 PPG clip. Roberson (9.8 PPG) averages team-bests in rebounding (9.1 RPG) and field-goal percentage (51.3%).

-- FSU (16-7 SU, 9-9-1 ATS) is No. 39 in the RPI, going 3-5 against the Top 50 and 6-7 versus the Top 100. The Seminoles have a home win over Virginia, a victory at Florida and a neutral-court scalp of VCU. Other victories of note include vs. Clemson, at Wake Forest and vs. Ohio on a neutral court. They don’t have any shameful defeats outside the Top 100.

-- Since losing back-to-back game at Louisville and vs. Pitt, Leonard Hamilton’s team has won four in a row while going 2-1-1 ATS. FSU smashed Wake Forest this past Saturday by a 91-71 count as a 2.5-point road favorite. Five Seminoles scored in double figures and seven different players had at least nine points. Malik Beasley had a team-best 16 points, while Montay Brandon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes added 13 points apiece.

-- FSU has been an underdog seven times this year, posting a 4-3 spread with three outright victories. The spread cover as a ‘dog sans the outright win came in a 78-75 loss at Iowa in overtime while catching 5.5 points.

-- Beasley averages team-highs in scoring (17.3 points per game) and field-goal percentage (51.5%). The freshman guard averages 5.5 RPG and is draining 41.7 percent of his launches from downtown. Beasley is making 84.2 percent of his free throws. Another FSU freshman, 6’7” swingman Dwayne Bacon, is scoring at a 16.2 PPG clip. Bacon averages 5.8 RPG. Rathan-Mayes (11.7 PPG) has dished out a team-high 108 assists.

-- FSU is 4-4 SU and 4-3 ATS on the road this year.

-- Since joining the ACC, Syracuse has won both head-to-head meetings against FSU both SU and ATS, including a 70-57 win last year as a 9.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Cooney scored a game-high 28 points for the Orange.

-- The ‘under’ is 12-11 overall for the ‘Cuse, 8-5 in its home games.

-- The ‘over’ is 10-9-1 overall for FSU, 5-3 in its road assignments. The Seminoles have seen the ‘over’ cash in three consecutive contests.

          **Iowa at Indiana**

-- Iowa (19-4 SU, 13-7 ATS) is atop the Big Ten standings with a 10-1 record, leaving it one-half game ahead of Maryland and one game in front of Indiana.

-- Fran McCaffrey’s squad has won five of its seven road contests both SU and ATS.

-- Iowa is No. 7 in the RPI Rankings, posting a 4-4 record against the Top 25, a 6-4 mark versus the Top 50 and a 7-4 ledger against the Top 100. The Hawkeyes already own season sweeps over Purdue and Michigan St., in addition to a neutral-court win over Wichita St. They have home scalps of FSU and Michigan.

-- Since losing at Maryland on Jan. 28, Iowa has won three in a row both SU and ATS, including Sunday’s 77-65 win at Illinois as an 8.5-point favorite. Peter Jok scored a game-high 23 points, while Jarrod Uthoff went for 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Adam Woodbury contributed 10 points, 14 boards and four assists.

-- Uthoff is averaging 18.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game. The senior forward is burying 46.7 percent of his attempts from 3-point range and 84.1 percent of his shots from the charity stripe.

-- Indiana (19-5 SU, 12-12 ATS) is unbeaten in 13 home games with a 9-4 spread record.

-- IU won its first seven Big Ten games, but it has dropped two of its last four. The Hoosiers lost 68-63 Saturday at Penn St. as 8.5-point road ‘chalk.’ Ferrell scored 13 points but made only 3-of-12 from the field and 1-of-6 from long distance. He also had as many turnovers (five) as assists (five). Nick Zeisloft drained 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line and finished with a team-best 14 points in just 20 minutes of playing time from off the bench. Thomas Bryant had 10 points and eight rebounds.

-- Tom Crean’s hot-seat status has been removed with the way his team has been playing recently. His club is led by senior point guard Yogi Ferrell, who averages team-highs in scoring (17.2 PPG), assists (5.8 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG).

-- Indiana is No. 53 in the RPI due to playing just a pair of games against the Top 50. The Hoosiers beat Notre Dame on a neutral court and lost at Duke. They are 6-3 versus the Top 100. Another reason IU’s RPI isn’t as high as you’d expect is because of defeats to UNLV and Penn St., both of whom are outside of the Top 100.

-- The ‘under’ is 13-11 overall for IU, 7-6 in its home games.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-9 overall for the Hawkeyes, but the ‘under’ is 4-3 in their road assignments.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

          **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Temple will play host to UConn on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Owls are 8-3 in AAC play, leaving them one game back of conference-leading SMU. The Huskies are 7-3 in AAC action. Temple owns a 5-2 spread record at home. The Owls covered in six straight games until dropping three of their last four versus the number.

-- ESPNU will have the broadcast of VCU at UMass on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. The Rams, who are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games, have compiled a 6-1 record both SU and ATS in their seven road assignments this year.

-- VCU saw its 12-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s 72-69 home loss to George Washington. The Rams hadn’t tasted defeat since a home loss to Cincinnati on Dec. 19.

-- Oregon will put its Pac-12 lead on the line Thursday at California. The Ducks are 9-2 in league play, 1.5 games in front of 7-3 USC. Dana Altman’s club has won six in a row both SU and ATS, winning all of those games by eight points or more and five of them by double-digit margins. Tip-off in Berkeley is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

-- Cal is undefeated in 14 home games with a 9-5 spread record.

-- Gamblers have a pair of late-night games that’ll be televised Thursday. Fox Sports 1 will carry Oregon State at Stanford at 11:00 p.m. Eastern, while ESPNU will have Gonzaga at Portland in the same time slot.

College basketball betting TV guide: Must-watch, must-wager games
            By STEVE MERRIL

College basketball is in full swing with conference play shaping the field for the NCAA tournament. Steve Merril has scoured the schedule for the must-watch, must-wager games for each day on the college hoops calendar so that you don’t miss any of the action.

Thursday - Oregon Ducks at California Golden Bears (espn2)

Oregon is one of the hottest teams in all of college basketball. The Ducks are 13-2 SU over their last 15 games. Oregon beat California 68-65 at home earlier this season, and that final score is not misleading at all as it was close throughout. California is a perfect 14-0 SU at home this season, so this game will be a stiff challenge for the red-hot Ducks.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Feb. 11 Opening Lines
              by Alan Matthews

The usually-dominant Oregon football team had a down season, but the Ducks' basketball team is making Phil Knight proud as the Pac-12 leader and perhaps the best in school history. OK, modern history because Oregon did win the National Championship in 1939. No. 11 Oregon starts a tough two-game road trip through the San Francisco Bay area on Thursday night at a California team that needs an upset.

              UAB at Southern Miss (+8)

No national TV for this Conference USA game at 8 p.m. ET. The Blazers (20-4, 10-1) hold a one-game lead over Middle Tennessee for the conference lead, and I'd imagine the C-USA is just going to be a one-bid league for the tournament champion. UAB is currently projected by ESPN as only a No. 15 seed in the Big Dance presumably because C-USA is so weak. All four UAB losses aren't good: Auburn, Illinois, Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky. UAB has won three straight since that WKU loss and destroyed Florida Atlantic 104-67 on Saturday. Seven players scored in double figures in UAB's 23rd straight home win. Blazers sophomore William Lee had 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots in 22 minutes. "That's about a complete of a game that we've played to this point of the season," UAB coach Jerod Haase said.

Southern Miss (7-14, 4-6) lost its second straight Saturday, 72-65 at Rice. After trailing 28-27 at the intermission, the Owls hit 11 of their first 12 shots to start the second half. Rice shot 59.1 percent after intermission. Keljin Blevins scored a team-high 14 points for USM. The Golden Eagles have won their past two home games, though, and are 5-3 ATS there this season. This is the only regular-season meeting between UAB and Southern Miss. The Blazers were 2-0 in the series last year, winning by seven in Hattiesburg.

Key trends: UAB is 6-1 against the spread in its past seven vs. teams with a losing record. It is 5-2 ATS in its past seven on the road. USM is 2-5 ATS in the past seven meetings at home.

              I'm leaning: UAB.

No. 4 Iowa at Indiana (+2)

This Big Ten matchup is clearly the game of the night and tips at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Iowa (19-4, 10-1) is alone atop the conference standings and currently projected as the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region for the Big Dance. The Hawkeyes perhaps were caught in a trap game Sunday at Illinois but won 77-65. Peter Jok had 23 points, and Big Ten Player of the Year candidate Jarrod Uthoff added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa. The Hawkeyes are 4-1 in Big Ten road games for the first time since 1997-98. The 10-1 record is the program's best start in Big Ten play since going 10-1 in the 1981-82 season. The last time Iowa was in first place in the Big Ten this deep in the season was 10 years ago.

Indiana (19-5, 9-2) is just a game back of Iowa for the conference lead. While Iowa was able to avoid a look-ahead game this weekend, Indiana wasn't as it was shocked 68-63 at a pretty bad Penn State team. The Hoosiers entered the game on pace with the 2001-02 Kansas team as the only squads in NCAA history to score 85-plus points per game, make more than 50 percent of its field goals and shoot better than 40 percent from 3-point range in a season. But Indiana hit only 36.2 percent overall vs. PSU and 33.3 percent from long range. This game should be a shootout as these are the top two scoring teams in the conference. It's the only regular-season matchup.

Key trends: Indiana is 7-2 ATS in its past nine vs. teams with a winning record. The Hoosiers are 7-3 ATS in the past 10 at home.

I'm leaning: Indiana, which is 13-0 at home this season and generally has destroyed people in Bloomington. Only two of IU's games there have been decided by six points or fewer.

No. 11 Oregon at California (+1.5)

Pac-12 matchup at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Ducks (20-4, 9-2) lead the Pac-12 by 1.5 games over USC and by two over preseason favorite Arizona. Oregon will close the regular season at USC. Coach Dana Altman's team is currently projected as a No. 3 seed in the West Region. Oregon brings a six-game winning streak into this one off a 76-66 home win over Utah on Sunday. Pac-12 Player of the Year candidate Dillon Brooks set career highs with 30 points and nine assists. Chris Boucher was iffy to play with an ankle injury suffered in the previous game but did and finished with 15 points and four rebounds. Oregon is off to its best start overall in nine years and best in the Pac-12 in 14.

California (15-8, 5-5) has two of the better freshmen in the nation but is on the NCAA Tournament bubble. ESPN does have the Bears in as a No. 11 seed. The Bears stayed unbeaten at home this season with a 76-61 victory over Stanford on Saturday. Jaylen Brown, one of those star freshmen and the team's leading scorer, had 16 points, and Kameron Rooks had career highs of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Ivan Rabb leads Cal in rebounding (8.4 rpg), blocks (29), field goal shooting (62.1 percent) and double-doubles (eight). He had 10 points and eight boards vs. Stanford. Cal leads the Pac-12 in both scoring and field-goal percentage defense. At home, the Bears are allowing just 62.0 ppg and 36.4 percent shooting from the floor. Cal lost at Oregon (also unbeaten at home) 68-65 on Jan. 6. Brown had 20 points and nine boards and Rabb 17 & 8. Oregon won despite shooting 40.7 percent from the field (24-for-59) and 50 percent from the foul line (13-for-26). Brooks had just four points.

Key trends: The Ducks have covered their past six vs. teams with a winning record. Cal is 6-1 ATS in its past seven at home. The Ducks are 1-4 ATS in the past five meetings.

              I'm leaning: California.
