Preview: Hawkeyes (14-3) at Scarlet Knights (6-13)

    Date: January 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Iowa has earned its highest AP ranking in 14 years, but it's using the bad taste of an exhibition loss in November as motivation.

At least on paper, the No. 9 Hawkeyes' longest league winning streak in 46 years doesn't seem likely to end Thursday night at reeling Rutgers.

Iowa finished off a season sweep of then-No. 4 Michigan State with last Thursday's 76-59 road win before cruising to an 82-71 home victory over Michigan on Sunday for its fifth double-digit win in six games.

Now the Hawkeyes have a chance to move into a first-place tie with Indiana by winning their first six Big Ten games for the first time since 1986-87. They've won 11 consecutive league games dating to last season, the program's longest such run since taking 14 in a row in '69-70.

The success has earned the Hawkeyes (14-3, 5-0) their highest ranking since they were also No. 9 early in the 2001-02 season. However, they aren't taking anything for granted on their trip to Piscataway, New Jersey.

"Every time you line up against a top-10 team you want to beat them," senior Mike Gesell told Iowa's official website. "Going into their place, (Rutgers) is going to be hungry. We have to bring our game."

The Scarlet Knights (6-13, 0-6) hope to dig their way out of the Big Ten basement after losing their last five games by an average of 31.4 points. They've also dropped 21 straight league games, including the tournament.

It's the conference's longest slide since Northwestern lost 28 in a row - including the tourney - from 1999-2001.

Still, Iowa is pointing to a 76-74 home loss to Division II Augustana in a Nov. 6 exhibition game as proof that anything can happen - particularly in Big Ten play - if the team isn't prepared.

"The Augustana loss in the preseason shows every night you have to bring it," Gesell said. "(Rutgers) is a good team and you can lose to anybody on any given night. Top to bottom, the Big Ten is the best conference in college basketball, so you can't take a night off, especially on the road."

The Scarlet Knights were outrebounded 63-23 and outscored 30-9 in second-chance points in Monday's 107-57 loss to No. 22 Purdue that marked the worst home defeat in team history. Corey Sanders, the league's leading freshman scorer at 14.2 per game, finished with a season-high 23 points.

Rutgers has been undersized without frontcourt players Shaquiile Doorson, Ibrahima Diallo, Deshawn Freeman and Jonathan Laurent. Doorson (foot), Diallo (foot) and Freeman (knee) are out for the season.

'I guess we just come together and somehow pray, I guess, because they are a better team in the rankings," sophomore D.J. Foreman said.

The Scarlet Knights are last in the 14-team Big Ten with a minus-5.6 rebounding margin, while the Hawkeyes rank 10th at plus-1.1. Iowa's Jarrod Uthoff is one of three players nationally with at least 315 points, 100 rebounds and 50 blocks, and the 6-foot-9 senior is averaging 22.0 points in his last four games.

Junior guard Peter Jok, second on the team with 13.9 points per game, has totaled 39 while hitting 7 of 11 from 3-point range in the last two.

Uthoff had 14 points in an 81-47 home win over Rutgers on Feb. 19, the first meeting since the opening round of the 1989 NCAA Tournament.

Preview: Wildcats (13-4) at Razorbacks (9-8)

      Date: January 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

(AP) - John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats face a major challenge: Find a way to stop getting bullied before the heralded squad drops completely out of the Top 25.

The Wildcats have tumbled to No. 23 in the rankings after rising to No. 1 on Nov. 23.

They've trailed by large margins, blown double-digit leads and along the way lost some of the intimidation opponents once felt when playing big, bad Kentucky.

There's still time for Kentucky to correct things, but Calipari says the time is now.

'Whatever is holding you back from high-energy play, you gotta figure it out,' he said earlier this week. 'We're facing teams that are playing like their lives depend on it. We've got to be a desperate team also.'

The Wildcats (13-4, 3-2 SEC) are looking up at several teams in the standings and their fervent fan base is wondering if these Wildcats are similar to the 2012-13 team that missed the NCAA Tournament or the squad that followed a year later.

Kentucky stumbled into the 2014 NCAAs as a No. 8 seed but found its resolve and reached the championship game. The hope is this team will eventually jell as well - sooner rather than later.

'We just have to play games the way we play in practice,' said freshman guard Jamal Murray, Kentucky's top scorer at 17.8 points per game. 'It comes down to how much we want it as a team, and how well we jell together.'

Developing a strong, consistent post presence is one of the first steps they must take.

Freshman Skal Labissiere (7.7 points, 3.2 rebounds) was expected to fill that role but has been outmuscled on both ends and often looked unwilling to mix it up.

The 6-foot-11 Haitian played just eight minutes in Saturday's 75-70 loss at Auburn - Kentucky blew a 12-point second-half lead - and forced 6-8 senior forward Alex Poythress and 6-9 junior Marcus Lee to handle the load inside. Though Poythress is the more physical of those two, he's undersized, and both players have been susceptible to fouls.

Labissiere said Wednesday that practicing against Lee, 7-foot Australian Isaac Humphries and 6-10 New Zealand newcomer Tai Wynyard has made them all better.

'My confidence is coming back up,' Labissiere said.

Kentucky's bright spot has been a guard-oriented lineup led by sophomore floor leader Tyler Ulis (14.4 points, 6.1 assists), freshman Isaiah Briscoe (10.7 ppg) and Murray.

Good as that guard trio has been, former player Winston Bennett believes the Wildcats need a post option if they hope to go deep in postseason. And given their current inside struggles, he said it's time to play Humphries and Wynyard more.

'You've got to put those guys in the fire at some point and see what they can do,' Bennett said. 'At the very least, they give you five fouls (each). They're big bodies, so they can hold post position where Skal can't, Alex can't or Lee can't.'

Whatever Calipari's strategy, Kentucky needs to quickly embrace it.

In league filled with opponents hungry to exploit Kentucky's vulnerabilities, the Wildcats must adapt better to hostile environments such as Arkansas' Bud Walton Arena, the site of Thursday night's SEC matchup against the Razorbacks (9-8, 3-2).

'They understand that teams are excited to play Kentucky, but we have to have more excitement and energy to play them,' Wildcats assistant John Robic said.

Kentucky's last visit to Fayetteville in 2014 ended with Arkansas winning 87-85 in overtime on a buzzer-beating dunk by Michael Qualls.

The Wildcats' tournament prospects might look shaky at the moment, but Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said they still remain a threat.

'You bring in another crew, but it's still Kentucky,' Anderson said. ' ... So, they're coming off a loss, we're coming off of a loss, so we're going to get their best shot. I know that, and hopefully we're going to give them our best shot as well.'

The Razorbacks fell 76-74 at LSU on Saturday to snap a three-game winning streak, with Craig Victor's put-back basket with 4.2 seconds being the difference.

Leading scorer Anthlon Bell had 19 points for Arkansas - first in the SEC with 83.8 points per game - and has averaged 20.5 in his last four games. However, Moses Kingsley (16.9 ppg) managed 11 and Dusty Hannahs (16.0) had eight on 3-of-10 shooting.

Kentucky has taken the last two meetings, being ranked No. 1 in both. Arkansas, though, has won the last three meetings in Fayetteville.

"When the Hogs and the 'Cats play, it's always a tremendous basketball game," Anderson said, "and I expect nothing less on Thursday."

Preview: Buckeyes (12-7) at Boilermakers (16-3)

        Date: January 21, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Purdue coach Matt Painter anticipated having an advantage in the paint and on the glass when freshman big man Caleb Swanigan committed to join 7-footers A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas.

It's safe to say the last two performances exceeded even his expectations.

Back-to-back blowouts have the 22nd-ranked Boilermakers feeling confident again as they look to beat visiting Ohio State for just the second time in nine meetings Thursday night.

Purdue (16-3, 4-2 Big Ten) ranks among the national leaders with a plus-12.6 average rebound differential and has outrebounded every opponent this season. The 6-foot-9 Swanigan leads the conference with 8.9 boards per game and grabbed 13 to go along with 12 points in Monday's 107-57 romp at Rutgers.

The Boilermakers held a 63-23 rebounding advantage while posting their most lopsided win ever in Big Ten play. Hammons and Haas combined for 11 rebounds in limited duty as Purdue's starters didn't play for the final 14 minutes.

Painter's team committed only four turnovers, its fewest since having three against Indiana on Feb. 4, 2012.

'We wanted to make an effort to try to get on the glass and establish ourselves there,' Painter said. 'Our guys gave a great effort and showed a lot of discipline not having a turnover the first half."

In their previous game, the Boilermakers outrebounded Penn State 42-25 in a 74-57 victory last Wednesday, recovering from a surprising 84-70 loss Jan. 10 to an Illinois team that still has only one victory in conference play.

Swanigan had 13 points and nine rebounds against the Nittany Lions, then posted his sixth double-double against the Scarlet Knights to tie for the Big Ten lead.

'I feel like things were going our way (Monday),' Swanigan said. 'As a team it might have been our best game as a whole entire unit. It's easy to agree with that because the whole team played well and we can just keep feeding off this.'

Ohio State (12-7, 4-2) also routed Rutgers recently, but that win has been bookended by blowout defeats. It fell 85-60 at now-No. 25 Indiana on Jan. 10 and had no answer for then-No. 3 Maryland's offense in a 100-65 loss Saturday.

The Terrapins shot 62.7 percent from the field, the highest the Buckeyes have allowed since Michigan State shot 73.3 percent Feb. 7, 2004. Ohio State trailed by as many as 42 and shot 37.3 percent for its second-lowest mark of the season.

It was just the third time the Buckeyes, who missed 12 of their first 13 second-half shots, had a worse shooting percentage than their opponent. Keita Bates-Diop scored a team-high 15 points for Ohio State, which had 13 turnovers and seven assists.

"We have a lot to work on," said Jae'Sean Tate, who finished with 12 points. "Consistency, effort, playing harder, and all the little things that you don't need talent for. (Maryland is) a very good team. They finished plays and kept the pace going the whole game. We need that same team effort. All of us, one through 12. We have to focus and get back to it."

The Buckeyes won the last meeting 65-61 on March 1 despite 16 points from Hammons and 15 from Rapheal Davis. Ohio State's only loss in the last nine matchups came in its last visit to West Lafayette, when Davis scored 20 points in Purdue's 60-58 win Feb. 4.

Hammons has averaged 13.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.6 blocks in the last five meetings.

Preview: Trojans (15-3) at Ducks (14-4)

          Date: January 21, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Oregon's 18-game home win streak and 10-game run over Southern California figure to be severely tested Thursday night.

That's because the No. 21 Trojans are one of college basketball's biggest surprises as they look to defeat the Ducks for the first time in seven seasons.

Southern California (15-3, 4-1 Pac-12) finished last in the conference last season and is now in the hunt for first place as easily one of the nation's most improved teams. The Trojans are one of the conference's highest scoring teams at 84.6 points per game while shooting a league-best 41.1 percent on 3-pointers.

"They've got a very talented team," Oregon coach Dana Altman told the Ducks' official website. "We knew they were going to be good; we tried to get some of those players, felt like they had tremendous upside.

"They're moving along very quickly. They've gotten good real quick."

Oregon (14-4, 3-2) hasn't lost at home since falling 80-62 to then-No. 7 Arizona on Jan. 8, 2015. The Ducks have won every meeting with the Trojans since losing both in 2008-09.

USC has already surpassed its conference road win total from over the last two seasons by improving to 2-1 in such games with last Wednesday's 89-75 victory that ended UCLA's 12-game conference home win streak.

It also moved the Trojans into the Top 25 for the first time since Nov. 17, 2008.

Jordan McLaughlin scored 23 and Chimezie Metu - who was recruited by Oregon - came off the bench for 21 as USC built an 18-point halftime lead and held off a series of runs by the Bruins.

'Every single game we've done a better job closing down the lead when we're up,' said guard Katin Reinhardt, one of four Trojans with at least 32 3-pointers. 'We didn't let up in the second half. Every time they made a run we countered it, locked in defensively and knocked shots down.'

The Trojans have no real superstar and instead feature a team-oriented approach with six players averaging between 10.6 and 13.5 points. It's a similar formula employed by another one of the nation's biggest surprises that also has the same initials as the Trojans - No. 24 South Carolina, which has five players averaging at least 10.8 points.

USC has used the "SC" from its name to dub its style of play "Slam City" as a play on words from coach Andy Enfield's "Dunk City" teams from Florida Gulf Coast. Metu has 28 dunks and Julian Jacobs 20.

"They're really athletic, like us," Ducks forward Dillon Brooks said. "It's going to be a fast-paced tempo, up and down."

Brooks is looking forward to his matchup with USC freshman Bennie Boatwright, a 6-foot-10 forward who leads the team with 35 3-pointers.

"He's a stretch four, so I've got to switch channels," Brooks said. "I'll try to get physical with him, because he's a freshman and we'll see how he reacts to that."

Oregon saw a three-game win streak end with Sunday's 91-87 defeat to Colorado. Brooks scored 21 points for the second straight game and freshman guard Tyler Dorsey added 19.

The Ducks, who yield 66.3 points per game to rank in the conference's top half, allowed their highest point total of the season.

'We scored enough points," Altman said. 'We just didn't guard anybody.'

Preview: Wildcats (15-3) at Cardinal (10-6)

            Date: January 21, 2016 11:00 PM EDT

Parker Jackson-Cartwright helped alleviate the pain of Arizona's disastrous trip to Southern California, and his next assignment comes with a visit to the northern part of the state.

After helping the 12th-ranked Wildcats extend the longest active home winning streak in the nation, the sophomore point guard will try to help them snap their first road skid in nearly two years Thursday night against Stanford.

Arizona (15-3, 3-2 Pac-12) suffered its first two conference losses on its trip to UCLA and USC from Jan. 7-9, falling 87-84 to the Bruins before a 103-101 quadruple-overtime loss to the Trojans - handing the Wildcats their first losing streak away from home since February 2014.

It only got worse when it was announced freshman standout Allonzo Trier broke his hand in the marathon defeat, sidelining him four to six weeks.

Trier had become the Wildcats' top offensive option by averaging 18.3 points on 53.4 percent shooting in eight games before his injury, including 19.3 in his three Pac-12 games.

Left without a hefty chunk of its offense, Arizona turned to another young guard in Jackson-Cartwright. He followed his career-high 11 assists during a 99-67 win over Washington on Jan. 14 with 13 points, one off his career best, and seven assists in Saturday's 90-66 blowout of Washington State - the Wildcats' 49th straight win at home.

'I thought the story of this weekend was Parker,' coach Sean Miller said. 'He played the best basketball of his career in back-to-back games.'

Jackson-Cartwright never finished with more than seven assists in 50 games entering last week, and he had scored in double figures just twice. He turned the ball over three times in 50 minutes between the two games.

The Wildcats shot a season-high 60.3 percent against the Huskies and followed at 54.2 versus the Cougars, and they combined to make 18 of 31 3-pointers - helping soften the blow of their first two road losses. Arizona, 2-2 in true road games, shot 44.8 percent at UCLA and scored only 73 points in regulation at USC.

The Wildcats, though, have won five consecutive games at Stanford as part of 11 in a row in this series dating to March 2009. They can match their longest current winning streak against a Pac-12 opponent, equaling the 12 straight victories they own against Utah.

Stanford (10-6, 3-2) has won four of its last five home games and has taken two of three in conference play. The latest was a 77-71 win over California on Jan. 14, netting coach Johnny Dawkins his 100th win at Maples Pavilion about a week after he picked up his 150th victory overall.

Rosco Allen finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Marcus Allen chipped in 16 points and 10 boards for his first double-double.

Marcus Allen, a junior guard, scored 10 of his points in the final 5 1/2 minutes, all on free throws.

"He's growing right before our eyes," Dawkins said. "I thought during that six-minute stretch, Marcus was outstanding."

Stanford is one of the best teams defensively in the Pac-12 but has shot 39.4 percent in conference play while averaging 67.6 points - exactly what it gives up.

College basketball betting TV guide: Must-watch, must-wager games
              By STEVE MERRIL

College basketball is in full swing with conference play shaping the field for the NCAA tournament. Steve Merril has scoured the schedule for the must-watch, must-wager games for each day on the college hoops calendar so that you don’t miss any of the action.

Thursday – Kentucky Wildcats at Arkansas Razorbacks (ESPN)

Kentucky’s heralded freshmen have not played up to their talent level this season. This year’s team has been highly inconsistent - a trait previous Kentucky teams did not have. The Wildcats lost at Auburn Saturday despite the Tigers missing their best two perimeter players. Kentucky will be playing its fourth road game in five contests against Arkansas. The Razorbacks are 7-2 SU at home this season.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Jan. 21 Opening Lines
                by Alan Matthews

Everyone assumed that Kentucky would win the SEC in a landslide again this season, and I'll admit I was one of those people. The SEC looked like the worst of the Power 5 Conferences in terms of depth (Power 6 if you want to include Big East) as it was last year. As of now, the Cats might not even be the third-best team in the improved league and they could fall out of the Top 25 with a loss Thursday at Arkansas, which is quite possible.

No. 23 Kentucky at Arkansas (+1)

A 7 p.m. ET tip on ESPN. Kentucky's stellar freshmen largely haven't lived up to the billing, especially Skal Labissiere. The Cats (13-4, 3-2) are off a 75-70 upset loss at Auburn on Saturday. Kentucky led 35-30 at the half, and the Wildcats were able to increase the lead to as many as 12 in the second half when Tyler Ulis hit a pair of free throws with 15:41 remaining. But then Auburn went on a 21-4 run. The game would see-saw back for a while from there, but the Tigers closed on a 10-3 run for the win. UK had won 18 in a row in the series. Jamal Murray has been the lone freshman to shine this season and had 20 points, while Ulis had 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Without Ulis, this team might be around .500. UK has had a player score at least 20 points in all five SEC games this season. That hasn't happened in the first five SEC games since 2009. Murray has scored in double digits in 15 straight.

Arkansas (9-8, 3-2) had a three-game winning streak snapped at LSU on Saturday, 76-74. . With the score tied 74-74, the Tigers' Craig Victor II put back an air-ball rebound with 4.2 seconds left. The Hogs' Anton Beard had a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer come up short. Arkansas has five losses this season by four points or fewer. Anthlon Bell led the Razorbacks with 19 points. He is one of 10 players in the country with four-plus 3-pointers in nine or more games this season.

Key trends: UK is 1-5 against the spread in its past six road games. It is 1-8 ATS in its past nine on Thursday. The Hogs are 4-0 ATS in their past four SEC games. The home team is 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings.

I'm leaning: Only senior Alex Poythress and a few seldom-used reserves have ever been to Arkansas' Bud Walton Arena, where Kentucky has lost all three of its games under John Calipari. It will be a "whiteout" in the arena. Still, I'm a tad surprised the Cats aren't bigger favorites. I'll take Kentucky.

No. 9 Iowa at Rutgers (+21)

Big Ten matchup at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Is it time to start talking about Iowa (14-3, 5-0) as a potential Final Four contender? The Hawkeyes have beaten Michigan State twice already -- first team since 1965 to beat the same Top-5 opponent by at least 10 points twice in same season -- and bring a seven-game winning streak into this one off an 82-71 home win over Michigan on Sunday. The 5-0 start is Iowa's best in the conference since 1996-97. The Hawkeyes have won 11 consecutive Big Ten regular-season games dating back to last year, the school's longest streak since the 1969-70 conference season (14-0). Peter Jok is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, averaging 19.5 points and 3.5 rebounds last week. The Hawkeyes have won 10 of their past 14 true road games. They are 3-1 in true road games this season, with the lone loss by one at a very good Iowa State team.

Rutgers (6-13, 0-6) could well be the worst Power 5 team in the nation. The Scarlet Knights simply haven't even been competitive in their six Big Ten losses yet. They were obliterated 107-57 at home against Purdue on Monday. That was the worst home defeat in school history, and Purdue had rebounds (63) than the Scarlet Knights had points. It was the school's 21st straight Big Ten loss. Why is Coach Eddie Jordan still employed? Forwards Deshawn Freeman (knee), Shaq Doorson (broken foot) and Ibrahima Diallo (broken foot) are out for the season. Freshman wing Jonathan Laurent (concussion) may be back for Thursday's game. He has missed the past four games. Not like it will matter. Rutgers was beaten 81-47 in Iowa City last year.

Key trends: Iowa is 9-2-1 ATS in its past 12 vs. the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes are 7-3 ATS in their past 10 on the road. Rutgers is 4-18 ATS in its past 22 following a loss.

I'm leaning: Potential letdown game for Hawkeyes. Take the points.

No. 21 USC at Oregon (-3.5)

A 9 p.m. ET tip on the Pac-12 Network. How about the coaching job done at USC by Andy Enfield? The Trojans (15-3, 4-1) enter on a three-game winning streak, including a very impressive four-OT win over ranked Arizona and then an 89-75 win at UCLA last Wednesday. The Trojans raced out to an early 18-point lead vs. the Bruins and didn't look back in ending a six-game losing streak in the series. This is the first time USC has been ranked since Nov. 17, 2008. That season's roster included future NBA players DeMar DeRozan, Taj Gibson and Nikola Vucevic. The Trojans haven't finished above .500 since the 2010-11 season and won only three Pac-12 games last year.

Oregon (14-4, 3-2) had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 91-87 loss at Colorado on Sunday. Dillon Brooks scored 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting with five assists for the Ducks, while freshman guard Tyler Dorsey finished with 19 points. All four of Oregon's losses have come when allowing more than 70 points. All four of those losses also have come away from home. USC is the second ranked team Oregon has faced this season. The Ducks beat No. 20 Baylor back on Nov. 16 in Eugene. Oregon swept USC last year, winning 75-67 at home. The Ducks have won 10 straight against the Trojans, the longest streak in the series.

Key trends: USC is 6-1-1 ATS in its past eight vs. teams with a winning record. Oregon is 11-3 ATS in its past 14 at home. The underdog is 8-2 ATS in the past 10 meetings.

I'm leaning: Ducks are way better at home. Take them.

Arizona State at California January 21, 9:00 EST

Cal Golden Bears (12-6, 9-9 ATS) suffering three consecutive Pac-12 road losses, the most recent a 77-71 defeat at Stanford as -3.5 point road favorites return to Berkeley to host conference rival Arizona State Sun Devils (11-7, 8-9 ATS). Golden Bears' unblemished home record (11-0, 7-4 ATS) could take a hit. Cal has lost the services of leading scorer, senior point guard Tyrone Wallace (15.4). If that were not enough bad news, Golden Bears haven't been able to solve Arizona State losing each of its last five vs Sun Devils (1-3-1 ATS).

College basketball betting TV guide: Must-watch, must-wager games

Kentucky will be playing its fourth road game in five contests against Arkansas. The Razorbacks are 7-2 SU at home this season.

Friday - Rhode Island Rams at George Washington Colonials (espn2)

Rhode Island and George Washington play a similar style of basketball as both teams like a slow pace while playing solid half-court defense. The Rams have played much worse on the road than at home this season, so that’s a concern for them in this game. George Washington is a perfect 10-0 SU at home, including an upset win over Virginia. The Colonials come into this game off a road loss at Dayton, so they’ll be looking to bounce back off that defeat.

Saturday – Arizona Wildcats at California Golden Bears (ESPN)

The Pac-12 has been a conference full of parity this season. The teams have been highly competitive from top to bottom, and road teams have had a difficult time. The Wildcats have already lost at UCLA and at USC, and they’ll play at Stanford prior to this game. California will be glad to be back at home after losing three straight games on the road. The Golden Bears host Arizona State prior to this game. They will go into that game with a perfect 11-0 SU record on their home court.

Sunday – Purdue Boilermakers at Iowa Hawkeyes (ESPN-U)

Purdue opened the season at 11-0 SU, but it has gone just 5-3 since then. The Boilermakers will host Ohio State prior to this game. Purdue lost 70-63 at home to Iowa earlier this season, so it is looking to atone for that poor performance. Iowa is still flying under the radar this season, despite only having three losses on the year. The Hawkeyes are a veteran bunch with NBA talent on the roster, but expect a much better performance by Purdue in the second meeting.

Monday – Duke Blue Devils at Miami Hurricanes (ESPN)

Duke inexplicably lost at home to Syracuse as an 11-point favorite Monday, and they’ll play at North Carolina State before playing the Hurricanes in Miami. The Blue Devils will go into their game against the Wolfpack on a three-game losing streak, so all is not well. Miami is also struggling a bit as it will go into its game at Boston College on a two-game losing streak. However, those games were on the road. The Hurricanes have lost just once at home this season and that defeat came by only a single point.

Tuesday - Xavier Musketeers at Providence Friars (FS1)

Xavier is playing fantastic basketball. As of this writing, it’s lost just one time all season and that was at Villanova. The Musketeers have an excellent offense and a stifling defense. The same can’t be said of Providence. After five Big East games, Providence was the worst shooting team (37.5 percent) in the conference, and they were ninth out of 10 teams in 3-point shooting at 29 percent

                              Thursday’s Tip Sheet
                              By Brian Edwards
                              **Kentucky at Arkansas**
                              — If you know anything about Kentucky basketball, you’re well aware that the natives who are card-carrying members of Big Blue Nation (BBN) are not happy. That’s what happens after UK drops a second SEC game by mid-January. The Wildcats went to The Plains this past Saturday and lost a 75-70 decision at Auburn as 12-point road favorites. The loss left UK with a 3-2 ledger in SEC action.
                              — Kentucky (13-4 straight up, 6-11 against the spread) enters Thursday’s showdown in Fayetteville in a fifth-place tie with Arkansas in the SEC standings. As of early this morning, most books had the ‘Cats favored by two points.
                              — John Calipari’s team is No. 18 in the RPI Rankings, producing a 4-0 record against the Top 50. However, the Wildcats have four losses to teams slotted between 50-100 in the RPI. They have lost at UCLA, at Auburn, at LSU and vs. Ohio State on a neutral court. UK’s best wins are over Duke on a neutral court, vs. Louisville, vs. Arizona State and at Alabama.
                              — Jamal Murray scored a team-best 20 points before fouling out at Auburn. Tyler Ulis played all 40 minutes, producing 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists compared to merely one turnover. Derek Willis finished with 12 points and 12 boards.
                              — Murray is averaging a team-best 17.8 points per game, but he’s shooting only 42.1 percent from the field. Also, he has more turnovers (51) than assists (43). Ulis is UK’s second-leading scorer (14.4 PPG) with a 98/32 assists-to-turnovers ratio. The sophomore point guard shares team-high honors in steals (23) with freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe, who is averaging 10.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Alex Poythress, the only senior on the roster, is averaging 9.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
                              — UK junior guard Dominique Hawkins dressed out at Auburn, but he didn’t play for a fourth straight game due to a sprained ankle. Hawkins might return tonight. He had a season-high 13 points vs. U of L the game before getting injured.
                              — Kentucky is mired in a 4-10 ATS slump.
                              — Arkansas (9-8 SU, 8-5 ATS) is No. 86 in the RPI Rankings, going winless in three games against Top-50 competition. However, Mike Anderson’s team is showing improvement, winning three of its last four games in SEC play. Since losing their SEC opener 92-69 at Texas A&M, the Razorbacks have beaten Vanderbilt (90-85) and Mississippi State (82-68) at home and trounced Missouri 94-61 in Columbia.
                              — Arkansas was unable to win a fourth straight Saturday in Baton Rouge, where it came out on the wrong end of a 76-74 decision at LSU. But the Hogs took the cash comfortably as eight-point underdogs. They have produced an 8-2 spread record in their last 10 games.
                              — Junior guard Anthlon Bell scored a game-high 19 points in the losing effort at LSU. Bell buried 4-of-7 attempts from 3-point range, while Moses Kingsley and Anton Beard were also in double figures with 11 points apiece. Kingsley also had eight rebounds, four blocked shots and a pair of steals.
                              — Arkansas has won eight of its nine home games, compiling a 4-1 spread record. The Hogs are 4-2 ATS as underdogs this year, beating Vandy 90-85 in overtime in their only such spot at Bud Walton Arena.
                              — Kentucky won both meetings between these conference rivals last season, but Arkansas had won the three previous encounters. In fact, UK hasn’t won at Bud Walton since 2009.
                              — The ‘over’ is 9-8 overall for UK.
                              — The ‘over’ is 7-6 overall for the Hogs, 3-2 in their home games.
                              — Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
                              **Southern Cal at Oregon**
                              — As of early this morning, most betting shops had Oregon (14-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) installed as a 4.5-point favorite.
                              — Dana Altman’s squad saw its three-game winning streak snapped in Sunday’s 91-87 loss at Colorado as a one-point underdog. A run of four straight ‘unders’ for the Ducks also came to a halt when the 178 combined points soared ‘over’ the 143-point total. Oregon was destroyed on the glass with the Buffaloes holding a 35-19 rebounding advantage.
                              — Oregon sophomore guard Dillon Brooks scored a team-high 21 points before fouling out in Boulder. Brooks made 9-of-13 shots from the field, including both of his attempts from downtown. He also had five assists, four rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot. Tyler Dorsey and Elgin Cook finished with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Chris Boucher logged only 15 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble. The juco-transfer center still managed 11 points and four rebounds.
                              — Oregon is unbeaten in 11 home games with a 5-3 spread record. The Ducks are 2-2 ATS in four games as single-digit home ‘chalk.’
                              — Brooks is averaging a team-high 15.8 PPG and is also pulling down 6.4 RPG. In 18 games, he also has 55 assists, 20 steals and 10 blocked shots. Dorsey is scoring at a 14.2 PPG clip, while Boucher is averaging team-bests in rebounding (7.7 RPG), field-goal percentage (52.6%) and blocked shots (3.3 BPG).
                              — Oregon is No. 8 in the RPI Rankings thanks to seven wins over Top-50 foes. The Ducks owns victories over the likes of Baylor, Valpo, UC Irvine, Alabama, California, Stanford and Utah. All the wins came at home except for the neutral-court triumph over the Crimson Tide and last Thursday’s 77-59 win at Utah.
                              — USC (15-3 SU, 13-4-1 ATS) struggled mightily in the first two seasons of Andy Enfield’s tenure, limping to a 23-41 record. But Enfield’s program has turned the corner in Year 3, surging to the top of the Pac-12 standings going into Wednesday’s action. The Trojans are 4-1 in league play, winning three straight vs. Arizona St. (75-65), vs. Arizona (103-101) and at UCLA (89-75).
                              — Southern Cal has had a full week to prep for Oregon after spanking arch-rival UCLA at Pauley Pavilion last Wednesday night. Jordan McLaughlin scored 23 points to go with four assists, three rebounds, one steal and zero turnovers. McLaughlin drained 5-of-8 attempts from 3-point range. Chimezie Metu, a true freshman power forward, added 21 points and eight boards, hitting 8-of-10 shots from the field. Katin Reinhardt added 14 points and five rebounds. The Trojans led by 18 points at intermission and cruised into the win column.
                              — USC has posted a 3-1 record both SU and ATS in four true road assignments this year. The Trojans are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 trips to Eugene.
                              — USC is No. 15 in the RPI Rankings, going 4-2 against the Top 50 and 6-3 versus the Top 100. The Trojans have a home win over Monmouth, a neutral-site victory over Wichita State and a road win at UC-Santa Barbara.
                              — USC’s only defeats have come at Washington and vs. Xavier and Monmouth on a neutral court.
                              — USC has been an underdog four times this year, posting a 3-1 record both SU and ATS.
                              — Barring an epic collapse, USC is destined to get to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011.
                              — Totals have been an overall wash for the Trojans (9-9-1), but they have watched the ‘over’ hit at a 5-1 clip in their last six games. The ‘over’ is 3-1 in USC’s four road contests.
                              — The ‘under’ is 9-6 overall for the Ducks, 4-4 in their home outings.
                              — The Pac-12 Network will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
                              **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**
                              — Arizona is another ranked team on the road tonight. The Wildcats are 5.5-point road ‘chalk’ at Stanford. After losing back-to-back games at UCLA and at USC by five combined points two weeks ago, Sean Miller’s team responded with consecutive blowout victories over Washington and Washington St. at home last weekend. Meanwhile, the Cardinal has an identical 3-2 record in league play after beating Cal 77-71 at home last Thursday.
                              — The lucrative underdogs absolutely killed it Wednesday night. In games involving schools from Power Five Conferences and the A-10 where the underdog was catching 8.5 points or more, the ‘dogs went 9-2 ATS. FSU, Duquesne and La Salle were the only teams who failed to cover. Nebraska (+14 at Michigan State), Texas (+12 at WVU), DePaul (+8.5 at Marquette) and Saint Louis (+9 vs. Davidson) won outright, while Virginia Tech lost by only two at Notre Dame and Kansas State fell in overtime at Baylor.
                              — Villanova survived at Seton Hall in a 72-71 win, but the Pirates hooked up their gambling supporters as seven-point home underdogs.
                              — Nebraska senior slasher Shavon Shields led his team to a third straight win over Michigan State last night by scoring 28 points in a 72-71 win as a 14-point underdog. Gamblers backing the Cornhuskers to win outright were paid 9/1 odds (paid $900 on $100 wagers) at The Westgate SuperBook. Tim Miles’s squad has won four in a row and has covered the number in five straight. On the other hand, Tom Izzo’s team has lost three in a row (this season and in the head-to-head rivalry with the Cornhuskers).
                              — Nebraska is 4-0-1 ATS in its last five games against Michigan State.
                              — Boise State had its 10-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s home loss to San Diego State at Taco Bell Arena, but the Broncos bounced back with a 94-69 win over San Jose State last night as 19-point home ‘chalk.’ James Webb III scored 24 points, pulled down 18 rebounds, had three steals, one blocked shots and one assist without committing a turnover. Nick Duncan buried six 3-pointers en route to a 24-point effort. Mikey Thompson added 16 points for BSU.
