    Friday's NBA Tips
    By Kevin Rogers

    Knicks at Raptors

New York: 33-45 SU, 34-44 ATS
    Toronto: 46-32 SU, 45-31-2 ATS

The Knicks are running out of time to make up a two-game deficit to the Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New York heads to Toronto on Friday, as the Raptors are sneaking closer to their first Atlantic Division title since 2007, owning a three-game lead over the Nets. The Knicks are coming off consecutive losses to the Wizards and Heat, while Carmelo Anthony has been nursing a sore right shoulder which limited him to 4-of-17 shooting for just 13 points at Miami.

The Raptors beat the Knicks in the first two meetings this season on a back-to-back set in December, with each victory coming by double-digits. Anthony sat out both those games due to injury, as Toronto has won three of the past four home matchups with New York. Toronto failed to cover as 13 ½-point favorites in Wednesday’s 125-114 win over Philadelphia, the fourth consecutive victory for the Raptors.

    Pacers at Heat

    Indiana: 54-25 SU, 36-42-1 ATS
    Miami: 53-25 SU, 36-40-2 ATS

These two rivals keep going back and forth sitting atop the Eastern Conference as Indiana pulled back in front on Wednesday in spite of pulling back its starters. The Pacers edged the Bucks, 104-102 as one-point road favorites as head coach Frank Vogel didn’t play any of his starters. Amazingly, Indiana has covered just four of its last 26 games, while losing each of its past three in the road underdog role by double-digits.

The Heat got tripped up by the Grizzlies on Wednesday night, 107-102, the third loss in the last four games for Miami. Despite this skid, Miami has posted a 6-2-1 ATS record the past nine games, which includes the 84-83 defeat at Indiana as two-point underdogs on March 26. The home team has won each of the last seven matchups in this series, with the ‘under’ cashing five times. Miami is riding a 7-3 run to the ‘under,’ while holding eight opponents in this stretch to less than 100 points.

    Hawks at Nets

    Atlanta: 35-43 SU, 34-43-1 ATS
    Brooklyn: 43-35 SU, 42-36 ATS

The Hawks are on the verge of capturing the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, in spite of finishing with a below .500 record. Atlanta rallied late to knock off Boston on Wednesday, 105-97 to cash as seven-point favorites, the fourth win in the last six games. The Hawks are 8-3 to the ‘under’ the last 11 contests, while hitting the ‘under’ in four of the past five away from Philips Arena.

Since the start of February, the Nets have won 15 consecutive games at the Barclays Center, while covering 13 times in this stretch. Jason Kidd’s club has taken each of the first two meetings with the Hawks this season, including a 91-86 triumph as 1½-point home favorites in early January, the fourth win in five tries over Atlanta since January 2013. Thirteen times during this home winning streak the Nets have scored at least 100 points, while posting a 7-3 record to the ‘over’ the last 10 in Brooklyn.

    Suns at Spurs

    Phoenix: 47-31 SU, 50-27-1 ATS
San Antonio: 60-18 SU, 43-35 ATS

The Suns are still in the mix for a playoff spot after low expectations to start the season. Phoenix puts its three-game winning streak on the line, while winning seven of its past nine away from the Valley. Jeff Hornacek’s squad held off an undermanned Pelicans’ team in Wednesday’s 94-88 road triumph as nine-point favorites, the fourth victory this season over New Orleans. Since a three-game skid last month, the Suns have turned up the heat by posting an 11-3 SU and 9-5 ATS record in the last 14 contests.

The Spurs return home with no rest following Thursday’s contest at Dallas, as San Antonio goes for its 15th consecutive win at the AT&T Center. The last time the Spurs lost at home came way back on January 29 against the Bulls, while the Suns covered in their previous appearance in San Antonio in November as 13-point underdogs in a 99-96 defeat. Everyone is under the impression that Gregg Popovich may sit players on the second of a back-to-back, but the Spurs have won and covered four of their last five without rest.

Game of the Day: Pacers at Heat
      Covers.com

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-5, 184)

The two best teams in the Eastern Conference are struggling down the stretch, but one of them moves closer to claiming the top seed in the East when the Indiana Pacers visit the Miami Heat on Friday. Indiana holds a half-game edge over Miami entering the clash and a victory would reduce its magic number to one for clinching the No. 1 spot. The Pacers are just 8-12 over their past 20 games while the Heat is in the midst of a 10-11 stretch.

Miami could be without guard Dwyane Wade (hamstring) for the ninth straight contest and frontcourt reserve Chris Andersen (knee) also could be on the sidelines for the third time in four games. Forward LeBron James is much more concerned with the health of his club than landing the top seed in the East. “It’s not controlling our destiny about the No. 1 seed,” James told reporters. “We want to get healthy. That’s all that we care about, going into the postseason healthy. … Once everyone comes back, then we can get everything rolling.” Indiana rested its entire starting five while posting a 104-102 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

LINE HISTORY: Early lines in Las Vegas have Miami set as 5-point favorites but suggest a move to -3 if Wade is out. The total opened 184 and could dip to 181 if Wade is inactive.

      POWER RANKINGS: Pacers (-11.0) - Miami (-13.8) + Home Court (-3.0) = Heat -5.8

INJURY REPORT: Miami - D. Wade (Ques. Hamstring), G.Oden (Ques. Back), U. Haslem (Ques. Stomach), C. Anderson (Ques. Knee). Pacers - A. Bynum (Out Knee)

ABOUT THE PACERS (54-25): Indiana’s ragged play reached a low point when it was crushed by the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday for its seventh loss in nine games. Seeing a tired and lackluster group led to coach Frank Vogel benching all five starters against the Bucks, which allowed key players like Paul George, David West and Roy Hibbert to get some much-needed rest. The Pacers were able to notch a victory courtesy of Chris Copeland’s game-winning shot with 1.2 seconds left. “We needed this to get a little confidence to feel better about ourselves,” veteran forward Luis Scola told reporters. “Start to get some rhythm back and we needed a win.”

ABOUT THE HEAT (53-25): Miami knows there is an advantage to gaining the No. 1 seed after being taken to seven games by the Pacers in last season’s Eastern Conference playoffs before prevailing at home. The Heat see Indiana as a threat and would feel much more comfortable if they win this showdown and overtake the Pacers for the top spot. “It’s going to be intense,” Heat center Chris Bosh said. “It’s going to be a hard-fought game. There’s something at stake. It will pretty much be the playoffs and I think it will be a great atmosphere. We expect them at their best.”

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
      * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Miami.
      * Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
