To make the race for the eighth and final seed more exciting, the NBA introduced the play-in game, giving the ninth seed a chance to make the playoffs as long as it was four games or fewer behind the eighth seed.
This season, it applied in the Western Conference but not the Eastern Conference.
It works this way: the ninth seed, if it qualifies, has to beat the eighth seed twice to reach the playoffs, and the eighth seed has to win just one of the two games. If the eighth seed wins the first game, there is no second game.
