Preview: Golden State At L.A. Lakers
When: 3:30 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
The Golden State Warriors are 18 wins away from breaking the single-season record and are showing no signs of slowing down as they brace for the final 22 games of the campaign. The Warriors just got done taking out one of the top teams in the Western Conference and will try to keep the intensity up when they pay a final visit to Kobe Bryant and the West-worst Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.
Golden State was challenged in each of its last three games but found a way to pull all of them out in the end, including a 121-106 win at home over Oklahoma City on Thursday in which they outscored the Thunder 39-23 in the fourth quarter. “Fifty games over .500. I mean, it’s crazy,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “You can’t even dream this stuff up, but it’s been that kind of season for us.” It’s been the opposite kind of season for the Lakers, though the recent improvement of rookie guard D’Angelo Russell and Bryant’s retirement tour have provided some smiles. Bryant sat out to rest his sore shoulder on Friday and Los Angeles was steamrolled 106-77 by the Atlanta Hawks.
      TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (55-5): Golden State’s depth has been key over the last two games, with the Warriors beating the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday despite being without Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala before going 11 deep against the Thunder. Marreese Speights channeled his inner Curry with a pair of 3-pointers on Thursday and is 17-of-28 from the field in the last four games while averaging just over 12 minutes. “Lot of guys don’t win 55 games in three years combined,” Speights told reporters. “It’s a blessing to be on this team. Keep it rolling.”
ABOUT THE LAKERS (12-51): Los Angeles was without its top three scorers on Friday with Bryant (16.8 points), Jordan Clarkson (patella tendon, 15.6 points) and Lou Williams (hamstring, 15.3) nursing injuries, and the Hawks were able to focus their defensive attention on Russell. The rookie from Ohio State had scored 20 or more points in four straight games but was held to seven on 3-of-16 shooting Friday. “Just one of those nights for me,” Russell told reporters. “Same shots, same flow. Just one of those nights.”
      BUZZER BEATERS
      1. Warriors G Klay Thompson is 10-of-37 from 3-point range over the last four games.
      2. Lakers F Julius Randle recorded a double-double in five of eight games since the All-Star break.
      3. Golden State has taken four straight in the series, including a 109-88 victory in Los Angeles on Jan. 5.
      PREDICTION: Warriors 122, Lakers 99

        Preview: Oklahoma City At Milwaukee
When: 3:30 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Where: BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The fourth quarter has not been kind to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are trying to figure out how to protect a lead as the regular season hits the home stretch. The Thunder will try to avoid a third straight loss when they visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday.
Oklahoma City has dropped six of its last eight games and lost for the 10th time this season when entering the fourth quarter with a lead when they were blitzed in the final 12 minutes by the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. “When you’re losing, that’s when you really got to show your character and show who you are,” Thunder star Kevin Durant told reporters. “We’re going to keep our heads up. All our guys are going to stay positive and keep working and learn from it.” Durant has been unique in the NBA as a 6-11 forward who handles like a guard and can shoot from everywhere on the court, but Bucks budding star Giannis Antetokounmpo is beginning to look a lot like a younger Durant. The 21-year-old just missed his third triple-double in six games when he totaled 27 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in a 116-101 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
ABOUT THE THUNDER (42-20): Oklahoma City has been outscored 74-36 in the fourth quarter of its last two losses – at the Los Angeles Clippers and Warriors – and is in danger of surrendering the No. 3 spot in the West to the Clippers. “I think it’s a temporary thing,” Durant told reporters. “We definitely want to get it under control. We’re not happy with the way we’re playing, obviously. We want to win. But this is when you see what you’re made of.” The Thunder are 2-6 since the All-Star break and are staring at a stretch of schedule that includes visits from the Clippers and Portland as well as trips to San Antonio and Boston over the next six games.
ABOUT THE BUCKS (26-36): Milwaukee remains a longshot to make the postseason at 10 games under .500 but has looked better since handing over the offense to Antetokounmpo. Head coach Jason Kidd made the decision after the All-Star break to move point guard Michael Carter-Williams to the second unit and give Antetokounmpo the ball-handling responsibilities on the top unit, and the “Greek Freak” has responded by averaging 8.5 assists in the last six games. Guard Khris Middleton seems to be benefiting the most from Antetokounmpo’s passes and he buried 8-of-9 attempts from 3-point range en route to 32 points in Friday’s win.
        BUZZER BEATERS
        1. Carter-Williams (knee) has missed the last three games and is day-to-day.
        2. The Thunder reportedly signed veteran C Nazr Mohammed to a contract for the remainder of the season.
        3. Oklahoma City outraced Milwaukee 131-123 in the first meeting on Dec. 29.
        PREDICTION: Thunder 123, Bucks 115

          Preview: Phoenix At Memphis
When: 4:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
          Where: FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee
The Memphis Grizzlies have been taking advantage of a soft portion of their schedule as they look to climb the ranks in the Western Conference, with one exception – a recent loss to the lowly Phoenix Suns. The Grizzlies will look to exact revenge before the schedule intensifies when they host the Suns on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis is 7-2 in a nine-game stretch that has featured just one winning team – Toronto, which knocked off the Grizzlies on Feb. 21 – and its one bad slip-up was a 111-106 setback at Phoenix on Feb. 27. The West’s fifth-place team has recovered with three straight victories, the most recent a 94-88 triumph against Utah on Friday, as Zach Randolph scored 25 points to help the hosts claim a see-saw affair. The Suns snapped a 13-game slide with that upset at home last week and won by 18 points at Orlando on Friday to end a 17-game losing streak in the road. Alex Len erupted for a career-high 31 points and 15 rebounds in Phoenix’s most lopsided win since Nov. 16.
TV: 4 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), FSN Southeast (Memphis)
ABOUT THE SUNS (16-46): In the midst of their win in Orlando the Suns held the Magic scoreless for nearly eight minutes, an extremely positive sign for a young team that entered the weekend ranked 29th in scoring defense (107.5). “Everyone came in focused tonight, the level of concentration was high. Winning is winning,” Len told reporters. “We had 14 stops in a row. That got us going.” Veteran Ronnie Price, who had 12 points against Memphis last week, played a career-high 45 minutes versus Orlando and recorded a career-high five steals.
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (37-24): Defensive stalwart Tony Allen has missed seven straight games with left knee soreness and P.J. Hairston received his seventh straight start, but struggled again from the floor. Hairston, acquired from Charlotte before the trade deadline, is 3-of-14 from the floor and has missed all five of his 3-point tries in the last two games. Fellow newcomer Lance Stephenson has been much more productive on the offensive end and is averaging 12.4 points in just 22.7 minutes since joining the Grizzlies.
          BUZZER BEATERS
          1. After this contest, Memphis plays eight of its next 11 on the road, including visits to Cleveland, San Antonio, Boston and Atlanta.
          2. Randolph’s scoring average sits at 14.8, but he has produced at least 14 points in 11 consecutive games.
          3. Len had 22 points and 16 rebounds last week against the Grizzlies, and he was 5-of-6 from the floor in the first meeting in December.
          PREDICTION: Grizzlies 101, Suns 93

            Preview: Dallas At Denver

When: 5:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
            Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
The Dallas Mavericks are trying to hang onto the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference and can’t afford to suffer losses to teams behind them in the standings. The Mavericks will try to avoid a second consecutive loss to a sub-.500 team when they visit the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
Dallas squandered a chance at a 5-1 homestand with a 104-101 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Thursday and are just a half-game ahead of the seventh-place Portland Trail Blazers in the West. “This is a team that we should beat,” Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons told reporters after Thursday’s setback. “We’re playing for something much bigger than they are. This is the kind of loss that bites you in the butt that you wish you could have back in a couple of weeks.” The Nuggets are coming off their own tough loss after falling 121-120 in overtime to the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Denver looked like it had the win in hand before Brook Lopez’s tip with 0.4 seconds left dropped the Nuggets to 1-2 on their seven-game homestand.
TV: 5 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), Altitude (Denver)
ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (33-29): Parsons is on a tear over the last four games, continuing a trend that began in at the beginning of January. The veteran small forward was eased into the campaign after undergoing knee surgery but shot 51 percent from the field while playing all but one game in January and boosted that number to 52.3 percent while playing all 10 games in February. The upward trend is continuing in the first two games of March, and Parsons went 12-of-17 from the floor to finish with 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists in Thursday’s loss.
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (24-38): Denver won four of its last six games prior to the All-Star break but has managed only a 2-6 mark since the week-plus of vacation. The Nuggets lost leading scorer Danilo Gallinari likely for the rest of the season at Dallas on Feb. 26 while suffering a 122-116 loss, but finding points without him in the lineup has not been the biggest problem in the last three games. Denver allowed the struggling Nets to shoot 50.5 percent from the floor, including 13-of-22 from 3-point range, and sits in the bottom third of the league in opponent’s field-goal percentage (.46.2) on the season.
            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. Nuggets G Emmanuel Mudiay is averaging 23.5 points in the last two games after failing to reach double figures in any of the previous three contests.
            2. Mavericks F David Lee has recorded a pair of double-doubles in five games since joining the team.
            3. Dallas has taken four straight in the series and earned a 144-143 double-overtime victory in its last trip to Denver on April 10.
            PREDICTION: Mavericks 125, Nuggets 111

              Preview: Philadelphia At Miami
When: 6:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Where: American Airlines Arena, Miami, Florida
The Miami Heat are dealing with the loss of All-Star Chris Bosh quite well and go after their fifth consecutive victory when the league-worst Philadelphia 76ers pay a visit on Sunday night. Miami is 7-2 without Bosh (19.1 points) the last nine games after he was forced out of the lineup due to blood clots, and handed Philadelphia its 11th straight loss Friday 112-102.
Veteran guard Dwyane Wade is averaging 23 points during the winning streak and 26-year-old center Hassan Whiteside has continued to raise his game, producing 18.5 points and 15.3 rebounds over the past eight. “We’ve had a lot of different challenges,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. “We’ve had back-to-backs, we’ve had adversity, we’ve had (long) road trips – now we’re dealing with the same team 48 hours later, preparing for them and coming with another aggressive mindset.” The 76ers were without leading scorer Jahlil Okafor (shin), inside force Nerlens Noel (knee) along with guards Kendall Marshall and Nik Stauskas (both with illness) in Friday’s contest. All four are not expected to return Sunday.
TV: 6 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Sun (Miami)
ABOUT THE 76ERS (8-54): T.J. McConnell was also on a minutes restriction along with fellow guard Hollis Thompson on Friday and told reporters, “We are dropping like flies out here, man. It’s a long season. We’ve just got to get people healthy.” Guard Ish Smith is averaging 20 points over the past four contests and forward Robert Covington stepped up to pour in 25 points on Friday. Veteran forward Elton Brand made his season debut on Friday, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds in 13 minutes.
ABOUT THE HEAT (36-26): Whiteside is averaging 13.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and a league-leading 3.9 blocks on the season. “It’s been impressive,” Wade told reporters. “Credit is due to him. After the All-Star break, he came back a different person on the basketball floor. He’s really focused on being dominant night in and night out.” Goran Dragic has also raised his level of play, averaging 18.2 points and 7.4 assists the last five contests, and Joe Johnson scored 14 per game in four outings since being signed as a free agent.
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. The Heat have won four straight against the 76ers – two this season by an average of only 7.5 points.
              2. Miami came into Saturday’s games second in the league in scoring defense (96.9) and Philadelphia is last in points per game (96.5).
              3. Philadelphia’s rookie F Richaun Holmes was 5-for-7 from the field for 13 points and grabbed a season-best eight rebounds against Miami on Friday.
              PREDICTION: Heat 112, 76ers 98

                Preview: Portland At Detroit

When: 6:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Where: The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan
The Portland Trail Blazers won the first three stops of a six-game road trip but have hit a bit of a snag of late. The Trail Blazers will try to end a two-game slide and finish the trip with a winning record when they visit the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.
Portland was one of the hottest teams in the NBA with wins in 14 of 16 games before suffering a 116-93 loss at Boston on Wednesday and coming up just short in a 117-115 setback at Toronto on Friday. The back-to-back losses put a momentary snag in the Trail Blazers’ plans to overtake Dallas for the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference, and they will enter play on Sunday just a half-game back of the Mavericks. The Pistons are in a much more precarious position as the No. 9 team in the East and have also cooled off with back-to-back losses, following a four-game winning streak. A 102-89 loss to the struggling New York Knicks on Saturday dropped Detroit out of the top eight, a half-game behind the Chicago Bulls.
TV: 6 p.m. ET, NBA-TV, CSN Northwest (Portland), FSN Detroit Plus
ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (33-30): Damian Lillard joined Golden State star Stephen Curry as the only two players in the league with multiple 50-point performances this season when he went off for 50 at Toronto. Lillard has scored at least 30 points in nine of the last 11 games to spark Portland’s surge up the standings and was happy about how his team responded even in a loss on Friday. “I was proud of the way we bounced back from the Boston game and competed,” Lillard told reporters. “Even (Friday) we ended up getting in a little bit of a hole in the second half but we still fought back and I think, with some of the slippage that we had, we should be proud of the way that we still gave ourselves a chance down the stretch.”
ABOUT THE PISTONS (31-31): Detroit looked like it had turned the corner with the four-game winning streak that included wins over Cleveland and Toronto, but the last two games have exposed some familiar cracks. The Pistons shot 39.1 percent from the floor on Saturday while allowing the 26-38 Knicks to go off at 53.2 percent, and coach Stan Van Gundy was honest in his assessment of the performance. “We should all be disappointed, it was ridiculous,” Van Gundy told reporters. “We were just terrible. We didn’t bring any energy to the game. We didn’t play well at either end. It was an embarrassing performance.”

                  Preview: Houston At Toronto
When: 6:30 PM ET, Sunday, March 6, 2016
Where: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario
The Toronto Raptors try to extend the longest home winning streak in franchise history when they take on the Houston Rockets on Sunday. The Raptors are 2-0 on a seven-game homestand and have taken 12 straight at Air Canada Centre after a 117-115 victory over Portland on Friday.
DeMar DeRozan hit a team-record 24 free throws on 25 attempts in the contest as part of a season-high 38-point effort for Toronto, which enters 2 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the Eastern Conference. “I was just taking what they were giving me, honestly,” DeRozan told the media. “I wasn’t trying to force anything. Every time I saw an angle I was trying to take advantage of it.” This is the first meeting of the season between the Rockets and Raptors, who have split the season series nine straight times. Houston fell 108-100 at Chicago on Saturday and has lost 10 of 15 overall to leave it clinging by a game to the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (30-32): James Harden had a team-high 36 points Friday but needed 26 shots to get there and turned the ball over nine times, which gives him 17 giveaways against 15 assists over the last two games. The star guard is averaging 35.4 points in a span of seven road contests. He was 4-of-12 from 3-point range on Saturday for a team that has gone 12-of-70 in the last two games.
ABOUT THE RAPTORS (41-19): DeRozan’s effort grabbed plenty of headlines, but so too did the 50-point night by Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, whose performance highlighted Toronto’s recent defensive downturn. “It’s not like (our) guys are slacking or anything or just not giving an effort, it’s just attention to detail and doing a few little things that will help us defensively and make it harder for (opponents) to make shots,” coach Dwane Casey told the Toronto Sun on Saturday. The Raptors have allowed an average of 104.2 points – more than six over their season average – in the last nine games.
