MLB roundup: Red Sox take over first in AL East
    By The Sports Xchange

SAN DIEGO -- David Price allowed two runs over seven innings, and Travis Shaw and Dustin Pedroia combined for five RBIs Wednesday night as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Padres 7-2 at Petco Park to move into first place in the American League East.
The win, coupled with Toronto's loss to the Yankees in New York, gave the Red Sox a one-game lead over the Blue Jays heading into their three-game series in Toronto starting Friday night.
Price (15-8) allowed six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in a highly-efficient outing. He threw 98 pitches with 76 going for strikes.
Shaw drove in Boston's first three runs, including a two-run homer off Padres starter and loser Jarred Cosart (0-3). Pedroia capped a three-run Boston third with a two-run double.

    Mets 6, Reds 3
CINCINNATI -- Jose Reyes, Curtis Granderson and Wilmer Flores hit home runs to help New York defeat Cincinnati for the 14th consecutive time.
The Mets (74-66) moved into a tie with St. Louis for the second wild card in the National League, one-half game behind San Francisco.
New York starter Noah Syndergaard (13-8) was wild but effective, walking four and giving up six hits. New York's defense and a few baserunning blunders by the Reds helped him toss five scoreless innings.

    Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 1
LOS ANGELES -- Yasiel Puig homered and rookie Brock Stewart captured his first major league win as Los Angeles defeated Arizona for its fifth straight victory.
The first-place Dodgers (79-60) increased their advantage to five games over San Francisco in the National League West. The Diamondbacks (58-81) lost their third straight.
Stewart (1-2) allowed a run on five hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out one on 79 pitches (55 strikes) before a parade of relievers -- seven overall -- followed him to the hill. Kenley Jansen earned his 43rd save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

    Rockies 6, Giants 5
DENVER -- Pinch-hitter Cristhian Adames drove a two-run double off the right-field wall with one out in the ninth inning to give Colorado a victory over San Francisco in the rubber game of their series.
Nolan Arenado made it a one-run game when he led off the ninth with his 37th home of the season, driving closer Santiago Casilla's 1-2 slider into the stands in left-center field.
The walk-off win enabled the Rockies to finish their homestand 5-4 and drop the Giants to a major league-worst 17-31 since the All-Star break.

    Indians 6, Astros 5
CLEVELAND -- Francisco Lindor and Lonnie Chisenhall had three hits each and Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer to lead Cleveland over Houston at Progressive Field.
Carlos Carrasco pitched into the eighth inning to get the win. Cody Allen worked the ninth to pick up his 25th save of the season.
The loss snapped Houston's three-game winning streak.

    Yankees 2, Blue Jays 0
NEW YORK -- Bryan Mitchell made a successful return to the mound when he pitched effectively into the sixth inning and New York inched closer in the wild card race with a victory over Toronto.
The Yankees won their fourth straight game, for the 10th time in 14 games and are 2 1/2 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card spot.
The Yankees went up on Starlin Castro's 20th home run and Brian McCann's RBI single with two outs in the third off Marcus Stroman.

    Rays 7, Orioles 6
ST. PETERSURG, Fla. -- Corey Dickerson had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Tampa over Baltimore.
Tampa Bay's Nos. 6-9 hitters -- Mikie Mahtook, Nick Franklin, Dickerson and Luke Maile -- combined for eight hits, four RBIs and five runs scored as the Rays (60-79) avoided a three-game sweep.
The Rays got home runs from center fielder Kevin Kiermaier and Franklin as they avoided a three-game sweep.
Brad Boxberger (3-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Alex Colome struck out two in the ninth for his 31st save of the season.

    Pirates 4, Cardinals 3
PITTSBURGH -- Jung Ho Kang homered in the eighth inning to give Pittsburgh a victory over St. Louis, ending an eight-game losing streak.
The Pirates avoided a sweep by the Cardinals, who had won three in a row and remain 4 1/2 games ahead in the chase for a National League wild-card spot.
Right-hander Trevor Williams, a September call-up making his major league debut, pitched three innings of relief for the win. He allowed one unearned run and struck out three.

    White Sox 7, Tigers 4
CHICAGO -- Melky Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as Chicago rallied to beat Detroit.
Jose Abreu and Tyler Saladino added three hits apiece as the White Sox claimed the series victory. Chicago (67-72) has won four of its past six games.
Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Tigers. Detroit (75-64) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this month.
White Sox right-hander Chris Beck (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings to earn the win.

    Mariners 8, Rangers 3
SEATTLE -- Adam Lind hit two home runs, including his fourth career grand slam, as Seattle pounded Texas.
The Rangers (83-57), who got a three-run homer from Carlos Beltran, saw their lead for best record in the American League slip to two games over Cleveland. Texas scored fewer than six runs for the first time in eight games while third baseman Adrian Beltre did not score for the first time in 12 contests.
Mariners leadoff hitter Seth Smith went 3-for-3, scored three times and hit his 13th home run of the season.

    Nationals 5, Braves 4 (11 innings)
WASHINGTON -- Wilson Ramos hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and no outs in the 11th inning as Washington defeated Atlanta in a game that ended before a few hundred fans around 12:40 a.m. EDT.
Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg left the game in the third inning with an apparent injury, hours after he came off the disabled list after recovering from a right elbow soreness.
Washington's Daniel Murphy had a two-run single in the seventh off reliever Ian Krol. That gave Murphy 100 RBIs this year, and he finished the night with three hits to retake the National League batting lead over Colorado's DJ LeMahieu .345-.342.

    Brewers 2, Cubs 1
MILWAUKEE -- Jonathan Villar hit two home runs to lead Milwaukee over Chicago at Miller Park.
Villar, who also homered a day earlier, went deep from both sides of the plate and went 5-for-9 in the final two games of the series.
Anthony Rizzo had two hits for the Cubs and also homered for the third time in the last two games.

    Twins 6, Royals 5
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota scored two runs in the seventh inning to steal a victory over Kansas City in the finale of a three-game series at Target Field.
The Twins staged their winning rally off Royals reliever Joakim Soria. Soria allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking a loss for the third time in his past five appearances.
Robbie Grossman homered and had three hits to pace the Twins' offense. Buxton had two hits and scored two runs.
Morales homered and finished with three hits for Kansas City. Drew Butera hit his third home run.

    Marlins 6, Phillies 0
MIAMI -- Andrew Cashner, acquired in a big deadline trade, finally won his first game for his new team, leading Miami over Philadelphia at Marlins Park.
The Marlins snapped a five-game losing streak but are still just 2-10 in their past 12 games. The Phillies failed in their try for their first sweep over the Marlins since 2005.
Cashner, who was acquired July 28 from the San Diego Padres, pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out nine.

    Athletics 4, Angels 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Jharel Cotton allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings in his major-league debut, leading Oakland past Los Angeles.
Cotton (1-0) gave up two hits, struck out three, walked two and threw 102 pitches before leaving to a standing ovation.
The A's acquired Cotton and two other pitchers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 1 in exchange for Josh Reddick and Rich Hill.
Before being called up Wednesday from Triple-A Nashville, Cotton went 3-1 with 2.82 ERA in six starts and came within one out of a perfect game on Aug. 9 against Round Rock.

Preview: Astros (74-65) at Indians (80-58)

      Game: 4
      Venue: Progressive Field
      Date: September 08, 2016 12:10 PM EDT

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros will conclude their four-game series Thursday afternoon at Progressive Field. Houston won the first two games, but Cleveland won the third game Wednesday.

The end of Wednesday's game was a closer's nightmare. With the Indians clinging to a 6-5 lead, Houston had the tying run at first base, two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and Jose Altuve at the plate. But Indians closer Cody Allen rose to the challenge, striking out the league's leading hitter to end the game.

"We were hoping Altuve wouldn't come to the plate, but it figures," said Indians manager Terry Francona.

Said Allen: "Those are situations, you don't like them, but in hindsight you enjoy them. It's competition at its best. Game on the line. He's one of the best hitters in the game."

The Indians are 7-2 on the 10-game homestand that concludes Thursday. The pitching matchup will be Trevor Bauer (10-6, 3.70) for the Indians vs. Astros right-hander David Paulino, who will be making his major league debut.

Bauer comes into the game on a roll. In his last six starts Bauer is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .215 batting average. This will be Bauer's second start against Houston. In his first start, on May 10, he was outstanding. In a 4-0 victory Bauer pitched seven scoreless innings on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Houston is one of Bauer's preferred opponents. In four career starts against the Astros he is 4-0 with a 0.67 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Paulino is ranked as the No.4 prospect in the Houston organization and No.76 in all of baseball by MLB.com. He pitched at three levels this year, Class-A Gulf Coast Astros, Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno. In a combined 20 appearances, 15 starts he was 5-4 with a 2.00 ERA. In 90 innings he gave up 72 hits with 106 strikeouts and 19 walks.

The Astros will play the game without shortstop Carlos Correa, who also missed Wednesday's game. Correa has an inflamed left shoulder and was sent back to Houston for further tests.

Manger A.J. Hinch said he expects Correa to be able to play Friday, when the Astros open a homestand against the Cubs.

"Carlos is a little beat up," Hinch said. "We sent him to see our doctors. We felt it was the right decision."

Alex Bregman, who was drafted as a shortstop last year, but has played mostly third base since joining the Astros, started at short on Wednesday, and is expected to be there again on Thursday.

Correa struck out three times in Tuesday's game, but has a 12-game hitting streak. Correa is hitting .274 with 90 RBIs, 87 of them as a shortstop, which broke the Astros record for most RBIs by a shortstop, which was 86, by Miguel Tejada in 2009.

The series between the Indians and Astros has been very competitive, and with good reason. Houston is battling for the second wildcard spot in the American League and the Indians, who lead the AL Central by 5 1/2 games, are trying to hold off second place Detroit to win the division for the first time since 2007.

"Teams are chasing us. We have to play good baseball," Allen said. "We want to win on a daily basis, because as long as we continue to win, they can't catch us."

Preview: Phillies (62-77) at Nationals (82-57)

        Game: 1
        Venue: Nationals Park
        Date: September 08, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Philadelphia pitcher Alec Asher, 24, had a 9.31 ERA last season and served an 80-game suspension this year after a drug suspension.

But despite those challenges, the Phillies, who are out of the playoff race, would like to see what the young right-hander can do so he will start on Thursday in Washington against the Nationals.

"Asher got his butt handed to him last year," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin told philly.com last month. "He goes down to Triple-A; he never threw the two-seam fastball. He started throwing it. Every report I've gotten was that it's nasty. He actually had success with it."

"So that's why it was disappointing what happened to him happened because it seemed to be a game-changer for him. We never got to see it. That's why I'd like to see it," added Mackanin, who was drafted by the Washington Senators in 1968.

Asher served an 80-game drug suspension that ended Sept. 4. He was allowed to pitch in the Gulf Coast League last month for a Phillies farm team.

Last year, Asher had a 9.31 ERA -- the highest mark ever in a season for a Philadelphia pitcher who made at least seven starts.

Asher, who is from Lakeland, Fla., has a very small track record against Washington hitters.

Daniel Murphy, who seems to hit everyone, is 1-for-1 with a homer and three RBIs against Asher and backup catcher Jose Lobaton is also 1-for-1 against Asher. Murphy had three hits on Wednesday for the second day in a row.

Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon are 1-for-3 against Asher and Clint Robinson is 1-for-2.

Asher was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fourth round of the 2012 draft and traded to the Phillies in July 2015.

He was 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts last season as he made his major league debut.

Washington will also throw a young right-hander from Florida on Thursday, as A.J. Cole is scheduled to make the start.

Cole, also 24, made his big league debut in three games, with one start, last year with the Nationals and was 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA.

A fourth-round pick in 2010 by the Nationals, he spent most of this year at Triple-A Syracuse of the International League.

Cole is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts for Washington this year and has seemed much more poised on the big league mound this year.

The Nationals' rotation appeared to get a lift Wednesday as right-hander Stephen Strasburg came off the 15-day disabled list.

"We don't really know what his endurance level is," manager Dusty Baker said before the game. "Nobody knows better than the pitcher. I know he is a competitor."

But then Strasburg was removed from the game in the top of the third after throwing just 42 pitches.

Strasburg was not available to the media after the game and he is slated to have an MRI on Thursday, according to Baker.

"He felt a pinch in the back of his elbow. That was a long walk," Baker said of his trip to the mound in the top of the third to take him out. "So I am hoping he is OK. We will find out more tomorrow. He is frustrated and upset. I told you guys earlier ... he said he felt fine (before the game). You don't know until you get into action."

Strasburg was a Tommy John surgery patient and so was Lucas Giolito, a rookie right-hander. Baker doesn't think the Wednesday injury is the same area of his elbow that put him on the disabled list last month.

"I am just hoping Stras is OK," said Giolito, who gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings as the second reliever to follow Strasburg. "It is definitely not the best thing to look at. It is definitely a tough thing."

Washington also activated infielder Stephen Drew off the 15-day disabled list after he suffered from vertigo. He came off the bench on Wednesday and was 1-for-1 with a walk.

"We are glad to have him back. We are not sure what capacity we are going to use him," Baker said. "That is a dangerous game out there that we play. Hitting is probably the easiest part right now. Fortunately, we do have enough players."

Preview: Reds (57-81) at Pirates (68-69)

          Game: 1
          Venue: PNC Park
          Date: September 08, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- Music was blaring in the Pittsburgh Pirates clubhouse late Wednesday night.

That's not all that unusual, but it seemed just a little louder than normal, and the players seemed more upbeat.

That's because they not only avoided a sweep by St. Louis, but also ended an eight-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory against the Cardinals.

That will allow the Pirates to go into a four-game home series against the Cincinnati Reds starting Thursday without that skid hanging over them.

Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle preaches the day-at-a-time approach as much as anyone, but seemed as relieved as anyone.

"Absolutely," he said, smiling. "You play to win. You want to play well, and you have a process we follow (but) winning's better than losing. I've figured that much out."

Hurdle is one win shy of becoming the sixth Pirates manager in history to reach 500 wins with the club.

For the first time in several days, the Pirates are in a better spot then their opponent. Pittsburgh (68-69) can get back to .500 with a strong weekend and still has a shot at the postseason, trailing St. Louis -- which holds the second wild-card spot -- by 4 1/2 games.

Cincinnati has lost four in a row and eight of 10 and is playing out the season.

The Reds on Wednesday lost at home 6-3 to New York, giving the Mets a three-game sweep. Cincinnati is 57-81 but has played Pittsburgh close. The Pirates hold a 6-5 edge in 11 meetings and outscored the Reds by only 40-39.

Cincinnati made three outs on the bases early and missed a lot of opportunities Wednesday against the Mets. Manager Bryan Price describes that as atypical, even for his underachieving club.

In fact, Price guaranteed better performances at PNC Park.

"When you're (this) far under .500, to have regular games like this as a regular part of what we're doing would make it a way more challenging season than it already is," Price told MLB.com. "Guys, for the most part, have really played hard and played relatively to their ability and sometimes beyond. (Wednesday) will be something we don't see for a long time. I'm confident in that. This isn't our typical game by any means. We will certainly play better in Pittsburgh."

The Reds had runners on base in every inning Wednesday but stranded 12, going 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

"It's a tough series, but hopefully we get back on track against Pittsburgh and try to finish the season strong," Anthony DeSclafani, who took the loss Wednesday, told MLB.com.

Right-hander Dan Straily (11-7, 3.83 ERA) is scheduled to start Thursday for Cincinnati. He's already made a career-high 29 appearances and makes his career-high 28th start. He is 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in seven appearances (four starts) against Pittsburgh.

The Pirates counter with right-hander Ivan Nova (11-6, 4.34).

Nova is 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his first six starts since Pittsburgh acquired him from the Yankees on Aug. 1. He allowed two runs in six innings in a no-decision Saturday against Milwaukee in his last start.

Preview: Rays (59-79) at Yankees (73-65)

            Game: 1
            Venue: Yankee Stadium
            Date: September 08, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The last two times the New York Yankees have faced the Tampa Bay Rays, significant events occurred to change the course of their season.

In the final weekend of July, the Yankees were swept in a three-game series at Tampa Bay. They had already traded Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs and the sweep convinced general manager Brian Cashman to go into sell mode and trade off three other veterans and go with younger players.

On Aug. 12, Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double in his last game for the Yankees. Rodriguez's exit came a week after Gary Sanchez was promoted and a day before Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin joined the team and homered in their first at-bats.

Since those weekends, the Yankees have remained in the race for both the division and wild-card spot and they will look to gain more ground Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series with the Rays at Yankee Stadium.

"We've been playing extremely well," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. We've been playing playoff baseball since about August 1 because we knew the importance of those games. I think we were .500 after the first four months and we knew that wasn't going to cut it."

The Yankees have won four in a row and 10 of their last 14 games after completing a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with Wednesday's 2-0 victory. Bryan Mitchell pitched effectively into the sixth inning in his season debut, Starlin Castro hit his 20th home run of the season and Brian McCann added an RBI single.

Those events helped the Yankees get within 2 1/2 games of the Baltimore Orioles for the wild card. New York is 4 1/2 out of first place but now trails the Boston Red Sox and not Toronto.

"Right now, we're playing really good baseball," McCann said. "We're excited for this last month."

The Rays (60-79) are starting an 11-game road trip that could impact the AL East as they play four in New York, three in Toronto and three in Baltimore. The Rays are 26-33 against divisional foes after Corey Dickerson had an RBI triple in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 7-6 win over Baltimore.

"It's going to be a good atmosphere," said Alex Cobb, who starts for Tampa Bay on Thursday. "The Yankees are still in (the playoff race) and they are playing good baseball. This series is big for us too. The last month of the season is big for the organization as a whole. This is a chance for us to finish strong and build some momentum for next year."

Kevin Kiermaier and Nick Franklin homered for Tampa Bay, which has 184 this season, the fourth-highest total in team history.

Despite the power, the Rays have a .244 batting average, a .310 on-base percentage and a .737 OPS. Those numbers cost hitting coach Derek Shelton his job on Tuesday and Chad Mottola will take over Thursday.

Evan Longoria is 5-for-33 in his last nine games but often does well against the Yankees. He was 7-for-11 with six RBIs in Tampa Bay's last trip to New York and is batting .304 (14-for-46) in 12 games against the Yankees this season.

Longoria has 74 hits and 47 RBIs, tops among visiting players at the current Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009. His 15 home runs are tied with Boston designated hitter David Ortiz only behind Jose Bautista.

CC Sabathia will start the series opener. He has pitched well in recent outings by posting a 2.29 ERA in his last three starts and allowing three runs or less in five of six starts. Sabathia will make his 461st career start in the American League, surpassing Bobo Newsom for 22nd place in league history.

Sabathia's last start was a tough-luck loss in Baltimore on Saturday and it marked the second straight time the Yankees did not score for him. Sabathia did his part, allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits in two innings while working out of a few jams.

"I didn't have much. Just trying to make pitches when I had to, and I was able to do that for the most part. But it was a struggle today."

The left-hander is 14-14 with a 3.79 ERA in 40 starts vs. Tampa Bay. As a Yankee, he is 7-13 with a 4.35 ERA in 29 games against the Rays.

Sabathia is 2-8 with a 5.20 ERA at home this season and one of those wins was against Tampa Bay on Aug. 12

Cobb makes his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery. The first outing went well as he retired the final 10 hitters in his five-inning outing against Toronto while allowing two runs and four hits.

"I was happy in the fact that I felt back to competitive nature on the mound," Cobb said. "It wasn't being cautious, wasn't thinking about my mechanics or injury possibilities. I was just out there, wanting to get outs and I felt the groove of the game again."

Cobb is 5-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 10 starts against the Yankees. His last start in New York was Sept. 11, 2014, when he had a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings before Chris Young broke it up and ended a 5-4 Yankees win with a ninth-inning home run.

Preview: Brewers (62-77) at Cardinals (73-65)

              Game: 1
              Venue: Busch Stadium
              Date: September 08, 2016 7:15 PM EDT

There aren't many teams that the St. Louis Cardinals have been able to beat at Busch Stadium this year.

One of them is coming to town for the next four games, which might be the boost St. Louis needs as it fights for one of two National League wild-card spots with San Francisco and the New York Mets.

The Cardinals welcome the Milwaukee Brewers for the opener of a four-game series Thursday night. St. Louis is 30-37 at home but 5-1 against Milwaukee, including a three-game sweep July 1-3.

Although they went 5-4 on a nine-game road trip, the Cardinals (73-65) ended it with a 4-3 loss Wednesday night to Pittsburgh, enabling the surging Mets to tie them for the second wild-card spot. Both teams are a half-game behind the Giants, which blew a ninth inning lead at Colorado Wednesday night and fell 6-5.

Had St. Louis delivered a bit better with runners in scoring position in its series finale against the Pirates, it could have overtaken the Giants. But it instead went 3-for-14, failing to add on to its first inning run after the first three hitters singled, hitting into a double play with the bases loaded in the fourth and leaving Yadier Molina stranded in the eighth after his leadoff double.

"We had chances, lot of chances, but we didn't execute in certain situations and it cost us," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

What's more, St. Louis saw its streak of games with a homer end at 25, which tied a National League record set earlier this year by San Diego.

While St. Louis lost a game it could have won, the Brewers (62-77) were taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs, including a 2-1 verdict Wednesday night that saw third baseman Jonathan Villar homer twice.

Chicago's magic number dropped to nine in the National League Central, but Milwaukee battled in the series as though it was pushing for a postseason berth.

"That felt like a real baseball game, like one you're on the edge of your seat the whole game," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "It was a game you're hanging on every pitch, literally."

Milwaukee gives the ball to right-hander Junior Guerra (7-3, 2.85 ERA) for the series opener. Guerra, who dropped his only start this year against the Cardinals, just returned from a disabled list stint against Pittsburgh on Saturday, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings before leaving after reaching 70 pitches.

St. Louis counters with lefty Jaime Garcia (10-11, 4.41), who's dropped his last three starts, although he pitched well for six innings in a 9-1 setback at Cincinnati on Saturday. Garcia is 2-1 in three starts this year against the Brewers with both wins coming at home.

St. Louis leads the season series 11-4, and is 59-28 against Milwaukee since the 2012 season's beginning.

Preview: Rockies (67-72) at Padres (57-82)

                Game: 1
                Venue: PETCO Park
                Date: September 08, 2016 10:10 PM EDT

SAN DIEGO -- The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres meet in a four-game series at Petco Park this weekend, and the Thursday night opener features two pitchers at the opposite ends of their career.

Veteran Clayton Richard, who turns 33 next Monday, will be making his sixth start in his second tour with the Padres. It will be the 202nd appearance of his major league career.

Rockies rookie Jeff Hoffman, 23, will be making his fourth-ever major league start.

The pitchers have one thing in common other than their identical

                6-foot-5 heights.

Both are pitching with an eye for a job in 2017.

The Padres and the Rockies are looking to the future, using the final month of the season as an audition.

The San Diego rotation needs a major overhaul going into the 2017 season. Right now, only right-hander Luis Perdomo seems to have a lock on a starting spot going into spring training. Right-hander Tyson Ross would have a spot locked ... if his most recent appearance weren't the season opener.

"We're looking at everyone on this roster with an eye on 2017," said manager Andy Green, who committed the Padres to a six-man rotation for the final month of the season until right-hander Jarred Cosart sustained both a right groin strain and a right hamstring strain on the same play while covering first base Wednesday night.

Will San Diego stick with a six-man rotation? Not if Cosart is out.

"To have a six-man rotation, you need six starting pitchers," Green said Wednesday night while saying the severity of Cosart's injury won't be known until later in the week. Hint: Cosart will miss at least one start.

Which could be good news for Richard, who is the Padres' hottest starter at the moment. Since signing with San Diego on Aug. 1 as a free agent, Richard is 1-2 with a 1.48 ERA in six appearances (four starts). Adding in 25 relief outings for the Chicago Cubs earlier this year, he is 1-3 with a 3.29 ERA overall.

Over his past three starts, Richard has allowed one earned run on 19 hits and five walks with 12 strikeouts in 18 innings. That is a 0.50 ERA.

"I'm really happy to be back in San Diego," Richard said. "I'd love to stay and help their vision for the future."

Actually, Richard might be perfect for the role. Green has said that part of his development plan for the young Padres is to have a select corps of veterans to provide guidance. A former University of Michigan quarterback who was with the Padres from 2009 to 2013, Richard is seen as a strong leader.

"It's been great having him around," said Christian Friedrich, another left-handed member of the current San Diego rotation.

As for Hoffman, he is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in his first three starts for the Rockies. Thursday night could be different, though. The Padres will be the first major league team that Hoffman faces that is not in first place.

"He's faced a tough schedule while getting his feet on the ground,"

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Hoffman.

Before being promoted to the Rockies, Hoffman was 6-9 with a 4.02 ERA in 22 starts for Triple-A Albuquerque. Hoffman, who is two years removed from Tommy John surgery, was ranked among the top 50 prospects in the minor leagues this season.

The right-hander was part of the package the Rockies received last year in the trade that sent reliever LaTroy Hawkins and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Padres are 7-5 against the Rockies thus far this season with a

                4-2 edge at Petco Park.

Preview: Rangers (83-57) at Mariners (71-68)

                  Game: 4
                  Venue: Safeco Field
                  Date: September 08, 2016 10:10 PM EDT

SEATTLE -- While the Texas Rangers continue rolling toward the postseason and the possibility of finishing with the best record in the American League, the Seattle Mariners are on the verge of playing for the future.

Sitting 11 1/2 games behind the Rangers in the AL West and four behind Baltimore in the wild-card race, Seattle (71-68) has one eye on evaluation as the Mariners close out a once-promising season. One of the questions at the top of the list involves young starters Taijuan Walker and James Paxton, neither of whom have done a lot to impress the first-year regime of general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais.

The 24-year-old Walker, once considered the top prospect in Seattle's organization, will get another shot in Thursday's series finale against the Rangers (83-57).

Walker began this season as the No. 2 starter behind Felix Hernandez but fell so far out of favor that he did an August stint at Triple-A Tacoma. He turned in a couple of decent outings after getting recalled, but Walker's three-homer debacle in less than an inning his last time out might have the organization rethinking his future as a front-line starter.

Another Seattle starter who has a lot to prove is 27-year-old rookie Ariel Miranda, who turned in the best start of his career in beating the Rangers on Wednesday. Miranda He held the mighty Texas lineup to three runs (all unearned) and three hits in six innings.

"Obviously, the team helped me out a lot with some runs early," Miranda, who took an 8-0 lead into the fifth inning, said through an interpreter, "and that made it easy for me to be aggressive."

Walker's start is one of the few lingering storylines for the Mariners, who made up a game in the wild-card race Wednesday night but still has a lot of teams to pass on the way to the finish line.

Texas, on the other hand, is still trying to win the top seed in the AL and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Rangers still hold a two-game lead over Cleveland but can't afford to lose too many more games against inferior teams from the division down the stretch.

Wednesday's game saw Texas turn in another rough outing from its starting pitcher, only this time the offense couldn't pick him up. A.J. Griffin gave up five runs in the first inning, and by the time the Rangers finally got on the board with Carlos Beltran's three-run homer in the sixth, Texas was trailing 8-3.

Afterward, manager Jeff Banister was already eager to turn the page toward Thursday's series finale.

"Obviously, we need to come out and play good baseball, put another win on the board and move on to (the weekend series in) Anaheim," he said.

Thursday's series finale also marks the final times these two teams will meet this season. Texas has already won the season series, as the Rangers take a 12-6 advantage into Thursday.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Thursday, September 8, 2016, Opening Line Report
                    by Alan Matthews

I monitor several MLB news sources daily to get updated injury information that might affect a betting decision on any given game. But I was just as surprised as anyone that the Marlins activated slugger Giancarlo Stanton from the DL on Tuesday after he reportedly was going to miss the rest of the regular season due to a major groin strain. If rosters weren't expanded, then Stanton probably wouldn't be active. And he's only expected to pinch-hit for a while. Why the Marlins did this is pretty obvious: they are completely fading out of the NL wild-card chase. Alas, I don't see Stanton contributing enough in one at-bat a game to change anything. He did have a pinch-hit single on Tuesday vs. the Phillies, but the Marlins lost again. Miami also activated first baseman Justin Bour off the 60-day DL on Tuesday. He was batting .268 with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs when he was hurt. The Marlins were easily the newsiest team of Tuesday because Ichiro Suzuki hit the first pinch-hit homer of his Hall of Fame career. Now he's done everything!

                    Astros at Indians (-142, 8.5)

The only matinee of the day with a 12:10 p.m. ET first pitch. I think it's going to be tough for Houston to be a wild-card team for a second year in a row following the news that 2015 Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel was again scratched from a start (this time Tuesday's) and has been shut down from throwing at all for a little while due to shoulder inflammation. Originally slated to start last Friday's series opener against the Rangers, the Astros pushed Keuchel back, first to Saturday or Sunday and then to Tuesday, because of what they described as fatigue and soreness. I'd be surprised if we see him again in 2016. Houston goes with rookie David Paulino in his big-league debut here. Paulino went a combined 5-4 with a 2.00 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 90 innings in the minor this year. The Tribe's Trevor Bauer (10-6, 3.70) is working on a string of four straight quality starts. He beat the Marlins on Saturday, giving up three runs and four hits over 8.1 innings. Bauer won in Houston on May 10, throwing seven shutout innings. Jose Altuve is 3-for-12 off him. Carlos Correa is 0-for-7.

Key trends: The Indians are 0-4 in Bauer's past four at home. The "over/under" has gone under in six of his past nine there.

                    Early lean: Indians and under.

                    Rays at Yankees (-130, 8.5)

Tampa Bay is going to shut down shortstop Matt Duffy, the key piece the team got in the Aug. 1 Matt Moore trade with San Francisco, for the season because of an Achilles injury that has bothered him most of the season. He didn't play anywhere near at the level he did in finishing second in the 2015 NL Rookie of the Year voting. This series is Tampa's last at the Yankees this year. The Rays go with Alex Cobb. He made his return from Tommy John surgery on Friday vs. the Blue Jays, allowing two runs and four hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. It was his first MLB start in 18 months. Jacoby Ellsbury is just 4-for-22 off him. Brett Gardner is 2-for-15. New York's CC Sabathia (8-12, 4.20) has thrown three straight quality starts but dropped the past two. He is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in two starts this year vs. Tampa. Evan Longoria is a career .400 hitter off him with seven homers and 16 RBIs in 70 at-bats. Logan Forsythe is 8-for-19 off him with two homers.

Key trends: The Rays are 4-0 in Cobb's past four in Game 1 of a series. The over is 4-1 in his past five overall. The over is 5-0 in the past five meetings.

                    Early lean: Rays and over.

                    Reds at Pirates (-137, 8)

Pittsburgh's deadline trade for Ivan Nova has worked well as he's 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA in six starts with the Bucs, but they are still going to miss the playoffs. Nova (11-6, 4.34), who will become a free agent after the year, took a no-decision on Saturday vs. Milwaukee, giving up two runs and five hits over six innings. Nova's Pittsburgh debut was Aug. 6 vs. the Reds, and he won that game, allowing three runs over seven innings. Joey Votto is 2-for-8 career off him with a homer. Brandon Phillips is 4-for-9 with two homers. Cincinnati's Dan Straily (11-7, 3.83) beat the Cardinals on Saturday and gave up a run and struck out seven over 5.2 innings. He is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 21.0 innings this year against Pittsburgh. Josh Harrison is 3-for-10 against him with two solo homers. Andrew McCutchen is 3-for-14.

Key trends: The Reds are 5-0 in Straily's past five vs. the NL Central. The over is 6-1 in his past seven. The under is 7-2-1 in the past 10 meetings.

                    Early lean: Pirates and under.

                    Brewers at Cardinals (-153, 8)

Milwaukee's 31-year-old Junior Guerra (7-3, 2.85) has been one of the more unlikely rookie success stories this season. He returned from about a month on the DL due to some elbow soreness on Friday in Pittsburgh and was pulled after 3.1 innings despite not allowing a run because Guerra was on a pitch count. He is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts this year against St. Louis but this will be his first outing at Busch Stadium. Matt Carpenter is 3-for-3 off him. Yadier Molina is 0-for-3. Cards lefty Jaime Garcia (10-11, 4.41) lost a third straight start Saturday in giving up two runs over six innings in Cincinnati. He is 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA in three starts this year against the Brewers, who are hitting only .132 off him. Ryan Braun hits .179 off him with nine strikeouts in 56 at-bats. Chris Carter is 2-for-6 with a homer.

Key trends: The Brewers are 2-9 in their past 11 in Game 1 of a series. The Cards are 4-1 in Garcia's past five at home vs. teams with a losing record. The over is 5-2 in the Brewers' past seven vs. the lefty. The over is 4-0 in Garcia's past four.

                    Early lean: Cardinals and over.

                    Rangers at Mariners (-105, 8.5)

This is the final time the AL West rivals play this season, which is a bit surprising with still a good three-plus weeks to go. Texas goes with lefty Derek Holland (7-6, 4.57). He's working on a string of three straight quality outings and beat Houston last time out in giving up two runs over six innings. Holland is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts vs. the Mariners this year and 12-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 24 games against them in his career. Robinson Cano is a career .356 hitter against him in 45 at-bats. But monitor his status as Cano is day-to-day with a sore right foot. Nelson Cruz is 5-for-17 with two homers. Seattle's Taijuan Walker (4-10, 4.60) still hasn't managed to live up to his tremendous promise, but he's only 24. Walker was bombed last time out by the Angels, pitching just two-thirds of an inning and allowing six runs (three homers). Walker is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts vs. the Rangers. Adrian Beltre is 7-for-13 off him with three doubles and a homer. Rougned Odor is 5-for-10 with a homer.

Key trends: The Rangers are 5-2 in Holland's past seven in Seattle. The Mariners are 1-5 in Walker's past six vs. the AL West. The over is 13-3 in the past 16 meetings.

                    Early lean: Rangers and over.

The Cleveland Indians look to finish a strong 10-game homestand with eight victories when they host the Houston Astros on Thursday afternoon. The Indians recovered from two straight losses to edge the Astros 6-5 on Wednesday and will send Trevor Bauer to the mound for the series finale in search of his fifth win in five career starts against Houston.

Bauer owns a 4-0 record and 0.67 ERA versus the Astros and first-place Cleveland holds a 5 1/2-game lead over Detroit in the American League Central. Bauer is not expected to face star shortstop Carlos Correa, who was sent back to Houston due to left shoulder inflammation after hitting safely in his last 12 games. The Astros, who trail Baltimore by two games for the AL’s second wild card, go home after Thursday's contest for three-game series against division leaders Texas and the Chicago Cubs. Rookie Alex Bregman moved from third base to shortstop Wednesday and extended his hitting streak to six games (11-for-29) while Jose Altuve recorded two hits to keep his AL-leading average at .344.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH David Paulino (NR) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (10-6, 3.70 ERA)

The 6-7 Paulino will be making his major-league debut as he fills in for 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel (shoulder inflammation). The 22-year-old Dominican spent time at three levels of the minors this season, recording a 5-4 record, 2.00 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 90 innings. Paulino was acquired as the player to be named in the deal with Detroit for Jose Veras in 2013.

Bauer has become a mainstay in the rotation after starting the season in the bullpen and is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA over his last six starts. The 25-year-old UCLA product has not allowed a homer in his last three outings and has served up 15 in 30 games (23 starts). Evan Gattis has a home run and five strikeouts in six at-bats versus Bauer, who pitched seven scoreless innings at Houston in a victory on May 10.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Altuve needs four stolen bases to become the first player in major-league history with 200 doubles and 200 steals in his first six seasons.

                        2. Cleveland OF Lonnie Chisenhall is 7-for-15 during his four-game hitting streak, following a stretch in which he went 0-for-16.

                        3. Gattis has hit 16 of his 24 homers this season as a catcher, tying the single-season franchise mark for the position shared by Jason Castro (2013) and John Bateman (1966).

                        PREDICTION: Indians 6, Astros 3

The New York Yankees are making a spirited push toward a postseason spot in the American League and may be playing their way back into contention for the AL East. The Yankees will try to extend their winning streak to five and move a season-high nine games over .500 when they host the last-pace Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

New York is in fourth place in the East but is only 4 1/2 games behind first-place Boston after knocking the Toronto Blue Jays out of sole possession of first place with a three-game sweep to begin the homestand. Wednesday's 2-0 win behind the young pitching combination of Bryan Mitchell and Luis Severino pushed the Yankees within 2 1/2 games of the second AL wild card and provided another glimpse of what promises to be a very bright future for the organization. The Rays are the only AL East team not involved in a postseason race but did New York a favor with a 7-6 win on Wednesday over the Baltimore Orioles, who are holding onto the second AL wild card. Tampa Bay will play a role in determining the AL East winner on the 11-game road trip that starts on Thursday and lasts 11 games while winding through New York, Toronto and Baltimore.

Cobb made his first start since Sept. 2014 on Friday and went five innings against Toronto, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out seven. The Massachusetts native spent more than a year rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and was limited to 84 pitches against the Blue Jays. Cobb is 5-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 10 career starts against New York.

Sabathia is hoping for some run support after coming out on the wrong end of a shutout in each of his last two outings. The burly veteran allowed a total of four earned runs in 12 2/3 innings in those two starts and posted a quality start in each of his last three turns. Sabathia scattered three runs over six innings to earn a win over Tampa Bay on Aug. 12 while striking out seven and walking three.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Yankees rookie RF Aaron Judge is 4-for-44 with 28 strikeouts in the last 15 games.

                            2. Tampa Bay SS/3B Matt Duffy will undergo season-ending surgery on his foot this weekend.

                            3. New York's Starlin Castro became the fourth 2B in team history (Joe Gordon, Alfonso Soriano, Robinson Cano) to reach 20 home runs in a season with a solo blast on Wednesday.

                            PREDICTION: Rays 3, Yankees 2
