    Preview: Red Sox at Tigers

    Current Conditions - Detroit

    Sunny 67 °F
    Wind: W 4.6
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Boston Red Sox (67-52) at Detroit Tigers (63-57)
    DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 18 - 1:10 PM EST
    WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The red-hot Boston Red Sox are headed to their fourth city in five days when they visit the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday afternoon. The Red Sox, who played in Baltimore on Wednesday night, reportedly requested that Thursday’s series opener be moved back to a night game despite the NFL’s Detroit Lions playing across the street at the same time but were denied by the Tigers.

Boston is enduring a brutal travel schedule that had them going from Boston on Sunday to Cleveland on Monday afternoon for a makeup game and then onto Baltimore for a quick two-game set before the key series in Detroit that will help determine postseason positioning. The Red Sox are showing no ill effects from the travel yet and are outscoring opponents 47-15 during a six-game winning streak that has pushed them into the top American League wild card spot and left them one game behind the Blue Jays for the AL East lead. The Tigers are on the opposite end of the spectrum offensively of late and totaled three runs while being swept in a three-game series by the Kansas City Royals. Detroit is 2-8 in its last 10 games – scoring one or no runs in six of those losses – to fall 3 1/2 games behind Baltimore in the race for the second AL wild card.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (4-9, 5.66 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matt Boyd (4-2, 4.16)

Buchholz will make his second straight start in place of knuckleballer Steven Wright, who is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Buchholz was limited to around 70 pitches against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday and was charged with three runs on three hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. The veteran Texan made five consecutive scoreless relief appearances before rejoining the rotation, beginning with a perfect inning against Detroit on July 27.

Boyd has been sharp in seven appearances – six starts – since rejoining the team from the minors just prior to the All-Star break and is coming off his best effort in that stretch. The 25-year-old breezed through the powerful Texas Rangers lineup while scattering two hits across seven scoreless innings in a win on Saturday. Boyd was not quite as strong in his only previous appearance against the Red Sox, when he failed to record an out while serving up seven runs and six hits on July 2, 2015.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (left biceps strain) returned from a one-game absence on Wednesday and went 0-for-4.

    2. Boston RF Mookie Betts is 9-for-16 with five home runs, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored in the last four games.

    3. Detroit OF Tyler Collins left Wednesday’s game with a knee contusion and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 6, Tigers 3

        Preview: Brewers at Cubs

        Current Conditions - Chicago

        Mostly cloudy 72 °F
        Wind: SSW 3.4
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (52-67) at Chicago Cubs (76-43)
        DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 18 - 2:20 PM EST
        WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs look to wrap up a dominant homestand with a four-game sweep of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. The Cubs are 7-2 during the stand and have won 14 of their last 17 at Wrigley Field, where they own the majors’ best home mark at 44-19.

The red-hot Cubs have won 17 of their last 20 overall to move 33 games above .500 and build a 12 1/2-game lead over St. Louis in the National League Central. Chicago has outscored Milwaukee 14-2 while claiming the first three games of the series, and the Cubs turn to ace Jake Arrieta to continue a run of outstanding starting pitching. Arrieta is 5-3 with a 1.70 ERA in 11 home starts, and the Cubs have won 10 of their last 11 home games against the Brewers, including a 5-0 mark this season. Right-hander Zach Davies, one of few brights spots for the Brewers this season, looks to build upon last year’s Wrigley Field debut in which he tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout ball to beat the Cubs.
TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (9-5, 3.80 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (14-5, 2.55)
Davies went 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA over a six-start stretch before being roughed up last time out against Cincinnati. The Reds dinged the 23-year-old for five runs over five innings Saturday, handing him his first loss since June 30. Davies held the Cubs to one run in 6 1/3 innings on July 23, improving to 2-0 with a 0.73 ERA in two career meetings.
After going winless in five July starts, Arrieta has flashed his dominant form to win his first two outings this month. The 30-year-old followed up eight shutout innings Aug. 6 at Oakland with another solid performance Friday, holding St. Louis to one run and four hits over 5 2/3 frames. Arrieta is 5-3 with a 2.31 ERA in 10 starts against the Brewers, including a win on April 28.

        WALK-OFFS
        1. Cubs starting pitchers have allowed two or fewer runs in 12 straight games – the club’s longest single-season streak since at least 1913 – and are 11-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 15 games in August.
        2. Milwaukee CF Keon Broxton is batting .350 with 10 runs scored in 20 games since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on July 25.
        3. Chicago OF Jorge Soler is hitting .379 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 10 games since returning from the disabled list.

            Current Conditions - Baltimore

            Wind: W 3.8
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Houston Astros (61-59) at Baltimore Orioles (66-53)
            DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 18 - 7:05 PM EST

Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch hasn't enjoyed the ride on which his team has been during its four-game losing streak. Outscored by a gaudy 29-11 margin during the skid, the Astros look to turn the tide on Thursday as they open a four-game series against the host Baltimore Orioles.

"The rollercoaster ride that we've been on is no fun when we're in this portion of it," Hinch said after his team's pitching was shredded for the third straight game in an 8-2 setback against St. Louis on Wednesday. "This game will test your character, it'll test your resolve, it'll test your ability to come back from adversity, and this is another test for us." Baltimore isn't singing a much happier tune after losing the first two contests of its eight-game homestand - including an 8-1 rain-shortened defeat to Boston on Wednesday. The Orioles, who lead the Astros by 5 1/2 games for the second wild card in the American League, reside two games behind East-leading Toronto and one in back of the second-place Red Sox.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Joe Musgrove (1-0, 1.47 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (3-10, 4.04)

Musgrove secured his first career victory while recording his second straight quality start on Friday, allowing two runs in seven innings of a 5-3 win at Toronto. The triumph was especially sweet for the 23-year-old, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2011. Musgrove struck out seven in that contest and has fanned 13 batters while walking one over his last two outings.

Gausman has yielded two runs in each of his last three outings and matched a season high with nine strikeouts on Saturday in a 6-2 setback at San Francisco. The 25-year-old only lasted four innings, however, as six walks drove up his pitch count. Gausman struggled in his lone career start versus Houston, surrendering three homers and four runs overall in five innings of a 4-2 loss on May 26.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Houston RF George Springer, who belted two homers off Gausman in the previous meeting, is just 1-for-13 with six strikeouts in his last four games.

            2. Baltimore is just 11-19 against AL West representatives this season.

            3. Astros rookie 3B Alex Bregman is batting .312 with seven RBIs in his last 11 games.

            PREDICTION: Orioles 4, Astros 3

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (67-52) at Philadelphia Phillies (56-65)

Chase Utley set the tone in his return to Philadelphia with a pair of home runs and his Los Angeles' teammates have followed his lead by continuing to swing for the fences. The Dodgers have blasted seven homers in a pair of lopsided victories and look to complete a three-game sweep over the host Phillies on Thursday night.

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez seized the spotlight with a pair of homers and five RBIs in Wednesday's 7-2 victory as Los Angeles moved 1 1/2 games in front of San Francisco atop the National League West. Justin Turner added a two-run blast for the Dodgers, who did all their scoring via the long ball and are second in the NL with 156 runs scored since the All-Star break. Cesar Hernandez extended his on-base streak to 23 games and has hit safely in six straight for Philadelphia, which has dropped two in a row since winning four straight. The Phillies send Jerad Eickhoff to the mound to oppose Ross Stripling in a matchup of rookie right-handers.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet LA (Los Angeles), TCN (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Ross Stripling (3-4, 4.07 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (8-12, 3.82)

The Dodgers opted to push Bud Norris -- Thursday's original scheduled starter -- back one day, opening the door for Stripling to make his third straight start following four relief appearances in a row. He fell into an early three-run hole versus Pittsburgh on Friday and took the loss, giving up five runs over seven innings. Stripling was solid in his previous outing with five scoreless innings against Boston.

Eickhoff has won his last two starts, although he hasn't been particularly sharp in either one. He was reached for three runs on 10 hits, including a pair of homers, in 5 1/3 innings against Colorado last time out and also surrendered two homers at San Diego in his previous turn while picking up the victory despite allowing five runs in six innings. Eickhoff is 5-5 with a 3.05 ERA in 12 starts at Citizens Bank Park.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Gonzalez is 18-for-40 with 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored during a 10-game hitting streak.

                2. Philadelphia has 34 homers from its first base tandem of Ryan Howard (18) and Tommy Joseph after Joseph went deep Wednesday.

                3. Dodgers SS Corey Seager has hit safely in eight straight games, going 15-for-36.

                PREDICTION: Dodgers 7, Phillies 5

                    Preview: Nationals at Braves

                    Current Conditions - Atlanta

                    Cloudy 77 °F
                    Wind: SSE 3.5
                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Washington Nationals (70-49) at Atlanta Braves (44-76)
                    DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 18 - 7:10 PM EST
                    WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

The Washington Nationals have defeated the Atlanta Braves eight times in nine meetings entering Thursday’s opener of a four-game series in Atlanta, but the Nationals really need a good effort from starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez. Washington’s bullpen worked 16 1/3 innings in losing two of three at Colorado, using five relievers to cover 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday’s 12-10 defeat.

Two players look to extend their on-base streaks entering the opener, as Washington outfielder Jayson Werth has reached base in 44 consecutive games (two off the franchise record) and Atlanta outfielder Ender Inciarte brings a 27-game streak into the series opener. Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon is red-hot entering the series, hitting .327 with 11 doubles and 22 RBIs since July 16. Rookie Trea Turner continues to impress, hitting .333 in his past 21 games with six doubles and four triples. Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman hit his career-high 24th homer in Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to Minnesota, and has scored at least one run in 10 of his past 11 contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Reynaldo Lopez (1-1, 5.74 ERA) vs. Braves RH Rob Whalen (1-1, 7.31)

Lopez earned his first major-league victory Friday against Atlanta in Washington, holding the Braves to one run on five hits in seven stellar innings. He only struck out two against the Braves but the 22-year-old features a mid-90s fastball and an outstanding curveball that he displayed in his major-league debut, striking out nine in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on July 19. Lopez, ranked as Washington’s third-best prospect by MLB.com, struck out 122 in 102 1/3 innings across 18 minor-league starts this season.

Whalen makes his fourth major-league start and his second in a row against Lopez and the Nationals, hoping for better results after getting roughed up for six runs on six hits in five innings to take his first big-league defeat. Atlanta’s No. 20 prospect according to MLB.com, Whalen has struck out at least five hitters in each of his first three starts, and fired four shutout innings to win his debut after allowing four first-inning runs Aug. 3 against Pittsburgh. The 22-year-old Whalen posted a 1.93 ERA in three starts at Triple-A Gwinnett, after going 7-5 in 18 starts at Double-A Mississippi.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is breaking out of a long slump, going 5-for-10 with four walks and four RBIs in his past three games, hitting his first homer since July 20 in Wednesday’s loss.

                    2. The Braves placed C A.J. Pierzynski on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring and activated C Tyler Flowers from the DL.

                    3. Atlanta SS Dansby Swanson went 2-for-4 in his major-league debut Wednesday.

                    PREDICTION: Braves 5, Nationals 4

Right-hander Danny Salazar looks to hit the ground running upon his return from the disabled list on Thursday as the host Cleveland Indians vie for a series victory over the Chicago White Sox. The 26-year-old Salazar, who has been sidelined by right elbow inflammation since Aug. 2, improved to 5-2 lifetime with a 3.19 ERA against the American League Central rival by winning both starts this season.

Salazar would be wise to keep a keen eye on Adam Eaton, who belted a grand slam in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 10-7 victory over the Indians. The 27-year-old is heating up this month with six multi-hit performances and is 4-for-12 in his career versus Salazar. The White Sox snapped a string of seven straight losses to division-leading Cleveland, which fell for just the second time in seven contests and failed to extend its six-game advantage over second-place Detroit. Carlos Santana launched a solo homer on Wednesday to raise his hit total to five in as many games and is 4-for-11 lifetime against Thursday starter Carlos Rodon.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (3-8, 4.32 ERA) vs. Indians RH Danny Salazar (11-4, 3.38)

Rodon recorded his first win in nearly three months on Friday after tossing a career-high 122 pitches over six innings in a 4-2 victory at Miami. The 23-year-old owns a 3-0 record with a 1.75 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 36 frames versus Cleveland in six outings, but he settled for a no-decision in his lone encounter this season. Rodon allowed two runs and fanned eight over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Progressive Field on June 19.

Salazar was downright impressive in a simulated game on Sunday, giving manager Terry Francona little choice but to insert the 26-year-old Dominican back into the rotation. Salazar has struck out seven batters in each meeting with the White Sox to increase his total to 63 in eight career outings (42 1/3 innings). He has allowed just three runs and seven hits over 12 innings against the White Sox, but Jose Abreu is batting .375 with three homers in his career versus the hurler.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Cleveland RHP Josh Tomlin was placed on the family emergency list on Wednesday, keeping him idle for three to five days as he tends to a personal matter.

                            2. Chicago rookie SS Tim Anderson belted a two-run homer on Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, during which he has scored eight times.

                            3. Indians LF Brandon Guyer collected three singles on Wednesday and has eight hits and seven RBIs in his last five contests.

PREDICTION: Indians 5, White Sox 2

Back at the .500 mark for the first time in nearly a month, the Kansas City Royals have a chance to climb back into postseason contention when they open a four-game series against the American League-worst Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Reigning World Series champion Kansas City is coming off a three-game sweep in Detroit to improve to 11-5 in August.

The Royals appeared to torpedo their playoff chances after going 7-19 in July, but they have won four in a row and seven of eight to move within 6 1/2 games of the second AL wild card. Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon homered in each of the last two games for Kansas City, which outscored Detroit 13-3 in the series. Third baseman Trevor Plouffe went 6-for-10 with five RBIs as Minnesota swept a two-game interleague series in Atlanta. Twins rookie right-hander Tyler Duffey goes for his second win over the Royals in six days when he opposes Kansas City's Dillon Gee in the series opener.
