    'Perfection on the line'

Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals July 21, 12:05 EST

Stephen Strasburg still hasn’t dropped a decision this year (13-0) and the Washington Nationals have gone 16-1 overall with him starting. Strasburg toes the rubber Thursday afternoon in the Nations Capital against visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.

Expect the Nationals to do what they typically do with Strasburg on the mound and that's win! Strasburg loves home cooking, the righthander is 11-1 his last eighteen in front of the home audience with Nats 17-1 in those games. Matching that, Strasburg is 7-0 in his last 13 day games with a 12-1 Team Start Record in those contest. He'll square off against Dodgers' lefty Julio Urias being brought up from Triple-A to make the spot start.

        Preview: Dodgers at Nationals

        Current Conditions - Washington

        Sunny 74 °F
        Wind: N 0.0
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (53-43) at Washington Nationals (57-38)
        DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 21 - 12:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia

The absence of Clayton Kershaw continues to be felt in its trickledown effect on the Los Angeles Dodgers' pitching staff. The Dodgers will bring 19-year-old rookie Julio Urias back to fill a spot in the rotation when they visit the Washington Nationals in the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday afternoon.

Kershaw was shut down on Wednesday due to lingering pain in his back and Hyun-Jin Ryu went back on the disabled list, forcing Los Angeles to push Bud Norris up a day and recall Urias from the minors after sending him down in part to limit his innings. Norris was pounded for six runs over five innings in Wednesday’s 8-1 setback, which gave the Dodgers their third loss in four games and marked the third time in five contests since the All-Star break the staff yielded at least six runs. Nationals All-Star slugger Bryce Harper belted one fastball from Norris halfway up the third deck in right field for his 20th home run but is just 3-for-20 with one extra-base hit since the break. Washington is working around the struggles of its biggest star as it has won six of its last eight games.

TV: 12:05 a.m. ET, MLB Network, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Julio Urias (1-2, 4.95 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 2.51)

Urias made his major-league debut on May 27 and was inconsistent in eight starts before getting sent back to the minors. The top prospect finished six innings only once and was ripped for five runs in 3 1/3 frames in his final appearance against Baltimore on July 4. Urias had one of his better efforts at home against the Nationals on June 22, when he allowed two runs and six hits in five innings without factoring in the decision.

Strasburg is trying to become the first pitcher to begin a season 14-0 since Roger Clemens in 1986 and is on a roll with fewer than two earned runs allowed in each of his last four starts. The former No. 1 overall pick started against Pittsburgh on Friday, when he allowed one run and three hits in eight innings to become the first National League starter since 1912 to start 13-0. Strasburg never has lost to the Dodgers, going 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four career starts.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The Dodgers placed RHP Chris Hatcher (oblique) on the 15-day DL and announced LHP Alex Wood would miss eight weeks after undergoing elbow debridement.

        2. Washington SS Danny Espinosa is 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts in his last three contests.

        3. Los Angeles SS Corey Seager (stomach virus) missed the first two games of the series and is day-to-day.

        PREDICTION: Nationals 6, Dodgers 2

CC Sabathia turns 36 years old on Thursday and the New York Yankees hope to make it a festive occasion for the veteran left-hander when they go for a four-game sweep of the visiting Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees have won four straight overall to move two games above .500 for the first time since April 12.

Sabathia has been hit hard during a five-start winless drought but will look to continue a strong run by New York's pitching staff, which has yielded three runs during the winning streak. Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira homered in Wednesday's 5-0 victory as the Yankees knocked Baltimore out of first place in the American League East. The slumping Orioles, who were without the flu-ridden Manny Machado and Chris Davis as well as catcher Matt Wieters (foot) on Wednesday, have managed only four runs during their four-game skid. Baltimore will try to avoid a sweep behind ace Chris Tillman, who is attempting to win his fourth straight start and tie Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox for the major-league lead in victories (14).

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (13-2, 3.29 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (5-7, 3.94)

Tillman cruised to his third victory in as many starts this month by limiting Tampa Bay to one run and four hits over seven innings on Saturday. He owns a 1.29 ERA in three starts in July, permitting 12 hits over 21 frames. Alex Rodriguez is 7-for-19 with five home runs against Tillman, who held the Yankees to one run over seven innings on May 3 before escaping with a 6-5 victory despite three homers by New York a month later.

Sabathia came off the disabled list in May and promptly rattled off six straight superb outings in which he surrendered a total of four earned runs. He permitted only one home run during that stretch but has been taken deep five times while going 0-3 over his last five turns. Sabathia limited the Orioles to two hits over five scoreless frames on June 5 and has owned slugger Davis (6-for-29, 16 strikeouts).

            WALK-OFFS

            1. The Orioles are 3-for-33 with runners in scoring position since the All-Star break.

            2. Yankees 3B Chase Headley missed Wednesday's game due to personal reasons.

            3. Orioles manager Buck Showalter (illness) also missed Wednesday's contest while CF Adam Jones exited with back spasms.

            PREDICTION: Yankees 4, Orioles 3

The Philadelphia Phillies have been a tough matchup for National League East rival Miami and will look to earn a split of their four-game set with the visiting Marlins in Thursday's series finale. The Phillies rebounded from a pair of extra-inning defeats with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday to improve to 5-4 against Miami.

Philadelphia's starting pitching has been masterful in the series, limiting the Marlins to two runs and 10 hits over 21 innings. Tyler Goeddel homered and collected a career-high three RBIs on Wednesday, matching his total from the previous 25 games. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton is among the struggling Miami hitters, going 1-for-12 in the series and 2-for-30 with 14 strikeouts against the Phillies this season. Struggling right-hander Tom Koehler will wrap up the seven-game road trip for the Marlins when he opposes Philadelphia's Jerad Eickhoff.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Tom Koehler (6-8, 4.68 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (6-10, 3.76)

Koehler could be pitching himself out of the rotation after giving up four runs and seven hits while failing to get through four innings for the third time in four starts last time out at St. Louis. Winless since June 19, Koehler is 0-2 over his last five turns, giving up 18 runs and 36 hits over 24 frames. He is 0-1 in two starts versus the Phillies this season despite yielding three earned runs in 14 innings.

Eickhoff has turned around his season after losing eight of his first 10 decisions, going 4-2 over his last eight starts and giving up two runs or fewer on six occasions. He rebounded from an ugly loss at Colorado with six frames of two-run ball in a no-decision against the New York Mets on Saturday. Eickhoff was on the losing end of a 5-3 decision on May 16, giving up two homers and three runs over six innings in Miami.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Marlins LF Christian Yelich is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

                2. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday after going 4-for-36 in his previous nine games.

                3. Miami needs to win four of its 11 remaining contests in July to post four straight winning months for the first time in team history.

                PREDICTION: Phillies 4, Marlins 3

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (40-52) at Pittsburgh Pirates (48-46)
                    DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 21 - 7:05 PM EST

The Pittsburgh Pirates won’t get very far in the race for a playoff spot in the National League if they lose home series against sub-.500 teams. The Pirates will try to avoid such a fate when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber match of their three-game set on Thursday.

The Pirates dropped two of three at Washington coming out of the All-Star break and overcame a second straight blown save by Mark Melancon to take the series opener from the Brewers 3-2 on Tuesday. Pittsburgh did better with the bats on Wednesday but could not get much out of starter Jeff Locke in the 9-5 setback, leaving the team 1-1 to begin a stretch of 18 of 20 against sub-.500 opponents. The Brewers are seeing any win as a bonus as they prepare for a trade deadline they hope will remake their farm system and jump-start the rebuilding process. All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy’s name is the one that pops up the most, and he drove in three runs in Wednesday’s win to push his value even higher.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Matt Garza (1-3, 5.74 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (5-9, 5.11)

Garza absorbed the loss in each of his last three starts and was roughed up for four runs on six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings at Cincinnati on Friday. The California native has been lit up for 18 runs – 15 earned – in 15 1/3 frames over the last three turns as his own trade value plummets. Garza is 2-3 with a 4.38 ERA in nine career starts against Pittsburgh.

Liriano continues to struggle with his control as he issued four walks in six innings at Washington on Friday. The Dominican leads the majors with 62 walks and has not gone more than six frames since a loss to Atlanta on May 18. Liriano, who is seeing the Brewers for the first time this season, went 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA and eight walks over 15 1/3 innings in three starts against the division rivals in 2015.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Brewers LF Ryan Braun has recorded six hits and scored six runs in his last four games.

                    2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen is 1-for-16 with six strikeouts in his last three contests.

                    3. Milwaukee totaled 18 runs in its two wins since the break and six in the three losses.

                    PREDICTION: Pirates 7, Brewers 5

The Boston Red Sox just swept one of the best teams in the National League to jump back into first place in the American League East and will try to keep the same intensity when they face the worst team in the AL. The Red Sox will send All-Star Steven Wright to the mound when they welcome the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

Boston’s league-best offense showed off its depth on Wednesday, when Hanley Ramirez smashed a career-high three home runs and Sandy Leon continued his remarkable hot stretch with his first career triple in addition to a homer. The Red Sox are 4-1 since the All-Star break and winners of 10 of their last 12 overall to move one-half game in front of Baltimore in the East. The Twins began their road trip by taking two of three at Detroit while leaning on the pitching staff. Minnesota allowed a total of four runs in the three-game set but will throw its Nos. 2-5 starters over the weekend at Boston after using Ervin Santana in a 4-1 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.23 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Steven Wright (11-5, 2.78)

Duffey is 3-0 in his last four starts but came away without a decision on Saturday against Cleveland in his first outing since the break. The Texas native surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks over 6 1/3 innings in a game Minnesota went on to win 5-4. Duffey was not sharp against Boston at home on June 10, when he allowed six runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 frames to absorb the loss.

Wright took a perfect game into the fifth inning at New York on Friday and ended up with the win after yielding three runs and as many hits in six frames. The knuckleballer has not been as strong of late as he was in the first two months and saw his ERA climb from 2.01 to its current mark over the last four turns. Wright went up against Duffey on June 10 and grabbed a win while allowing an unearned run in 7 1/3 frames.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia has reached base safely in 23 straight games.

                        2. Minnesota 3B Miguel Sano went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Wednesday to snap his 10-game hitting streak.

                        3. Boston LF Brock Holt has hit safely in nine consecutive games since coming off the DL on July 1.

GAME: San Diego Padres (41-54) at St. Louis Cardinals (50-44)
                            DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 21 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

Adam Wainwright has re-established himself as the ace of St. Louis' pitching staff and looks to help the Cardinals complete a four-game sweep of the visiting San Diego Padres on Thursday. St. Louis has won three in a row at home for only the second time this season after taking both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko is single-handedly destroying his former team, going 7-for-10 with four home runs and six RBIs in the series. Gyorko has homered in five consecutive games against the Padres and is 13-for-21 with six blasts and 10 RBIs in six meetings this season. Matt Kemp and Ryan Schimpf went deep in Wednesday night's 3-2 loss for San Diego, extending the team's franchise record to 18 straight games with a home run. Andrew Cashner, originally scheduled to pitch Wednesday, will face Wainwright in the series finale.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Andrew Cashner (4-7, 5.05 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.15)

Cashner, who is rumored to be on the trade market, enhanced his value with a stellar performance last time out against San Francisco as he notched a season-high nine strikeouts while allowing one run and four hits over six innings. He was shelled by the Los Angeles Dodgers in his previous turn, surrendering eight runs - four homers - in 2 2/3 frames. Cashner stymied the Cardinals with six innings of one-run ball on April 22.

Last time out, Wainwright held Miami to three hits in his first shutout since 2014 to improve to 3-0 with a microscopic 0.39 ERA in three starts this month. Wainwright owned a brutal 6.80 ERA through his first eight turns this season but has shaved more than 2 1/2 runs off that number over his last 11 turns. He's 6-3 with a 1.99 ERA versus the Padres after giving up three runs over six innings in a loss at San Diego in April.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. St. Louis has homered in 11 straight games, its longest streak since a club-record 19-game run in 2006.

                            2. Schimpf homered in both ends of the doubleheader and has launched six blasts in his last 10 games.

                            3. Cardinals SS Aledmys Diaz has reached base in his last 23 games and is 13-for-19 against San Diego.

                            PREDICTION: Cardinals 4, Padres 2

The Detroit Tigers are trying to remain in range of the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians as they open a four-game series on Thursday against the host Chicago White Sox. Detroit is a distant 7 1/2 games behind the soaring Indians and the club's better option may be focusing on closing in on Toronto, Boston and Houston in the wild-card race.

Chicago has fallen 10 games behind the Indians after a 1-5 road trip that concluded with Wednesday's 6-5 loss in 11 innings to the Seattle Mariners, marking the second time in three games that the White Sox blew a late three-run lead. "It is tough, especially when you're leading both the ones that you lose late," White Sox manager Robin Ventura told reporters afterward. “Those are always tough to be able to bounce back." The Tigers will try to get their bats moving again after scoring just four total runs while losing two of three home games to the AL-worst Minnesota Twins. Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler is 8-for-24 with three homers since the resumption of play after the All-Star break and hit his 36th career leadoff homer for the lone run in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Twins.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (2-9, 4.95 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (4-11, 5.10)

Pelfrey gave up two runs and five hits in six innings while beating the White Sox on June 4 - the lone time he has beaten Chicago in 10 career starts. He lost 11 days later when he gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings and is 1-5 with a 5.81 ERA lifetime against the White Sox. Pelfrey is 0-6 in nine road starts this season despite a respectable 3.53 ERA.

Shields was superb in his last outing when he gave up one run and two hits in eight innings but he suffered the loss in a 1-0 decision against the Los Angeles Angels. He has a 1.91 ERA over his last four starts - allowing two or fewer runs in each - after initially struggling upon being acquired from the San Diego Padres in early June. Shields is 7-6 with a 4.36 ERA in 20 career starts against the Tigers.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. White Sox 3B Todd Frazier has gone deep in three consecutive games and boasts 28 homers, tied with Baltimore's Mark Trumbo for most in the majors.

                                2. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera had two hits in Wednesday's loss but has just one extra-base hit (a double) and two RBIs in July.

                                3. Chicago LF Melky Cabrera fell a homer shy of the cycle on Wednesday and is 9-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak.
