      Preview: Rays at Rockies

      Current Conditions - Denver

      CLOUDS AND SUN 74 °F
      Wind: WNW 6
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (35-56) at Colorado Rockies (42-49)
      DATE/TIME: Monday, July 18 - 8:40 PM EST
      WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays ended one long losing streak and hope to halt another when they begin a nine-game road trip on Monday against the Colorado Rockies. The Rays had dropped eight in a row before Evan Longoria’s two home runs led to Sunday’s 5-2 home victory over Baltimore, and now they look to put a stop to a 10-game losing streak on the road.

Longoria has been the most consistent force for Tampa Bay this season with team highs of 21 homers and 49 RBIs, and he is 9-for-24 with three blasts over his last six contests. Struggling left-hander Drew Smyly, who could be on the move prior to the August 1 trade deadline, takes the mound for the Rays against Colorado rookie Tyler Anderson in the series opener. The Rockies won their first two contests after the All-Star break but dropped a 1-0 decision at Atlanta on Sunday to lead into a seven-game homestand. Rookie of the Year candidate Trevor Story (21 homers, 57 RBIs) should return to the lineup for Colorado after being rested on Sunday and slugger Nolan Arenado (23, 71) comes in after a 4-for-11 series versus the Braves.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Drew Smyly (2-10, 5.47 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (1-3, 3.03)

Smyly needs a good start to raise his trade value after going winless over his last nine outings (0-6), allowing four or more runs in seven of those turns - including each of the last four. The Arkansas native did not register a strikeout in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels last time out but has recorded 108 over 100 1/3 innings this season. Smyly, who has yielded 20 homers in 17 starts, is facing Colorado for the first time.

Anderson has not permitted more than three runs in any his first six major-league outings, recording a quality start in four of them. Opponents are batting .281 against the Las Vegas native, but he has kept the damage to a minimum with just six walks to go along with 32 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. Anderson has faced one American League opponent, giving up three runs - two earned - in six innings of a loss to Toronto.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Colorado OF Charlie Blackmon has hit safely in nine straight games, going 13-for-40 during that stretch.

      2. Tampa Bay INF Steve Pearce (hamstring) could return before the end of the road trip, which includes games in Oakland and at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

      3. The previous nine games in the interleague series have been played in Colorado, and the Rays took two of three in the last meeting in 2013 while scoring 18 runs.

      PREDICTION: Rays 6, Rockies 5

          Preview: Astros at Athletics

          Current Conditions - Oakland

          L/RAIN 59 °F
          Wind: WSW 13
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: Houston Astros (50-42) at Oakland Athletics (40-52)
          DATE/TIME: Monday, July 18 - 10:05 PM EST
          WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros are one of the hottest teams in the majors and the All-Star break did nothing to cool off the team on a rise. The Astros will try to continue chipping away at their deficit in the American League West when they visit the struggling Oakland Athletics for the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Houston was 11 games under .500 after a loss to Texas on May 22 but is 33-14 since that point to climb back within 4 1/2 games of the Rangers for first place in the AL West. The Astros, who will play their next nine games against teams currently under .500, allowed a total of five runs in taking two of three from the Seattle Mariners to open the second half and are coming off an 8-1 thrashing on Sunday. The Athletics are gearing up for the trade deadline and figure to be sellers when the calendar turns to Aug. 1 as they sit tied for last in the West. Oakland split four games at Houston prior to the All-Star break but came out stronger and just missed completing a series sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 5-3 loss on Sunday.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Mike Fiers (6-3, 4.35 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (5-6, 4.37)

Fiers has not lost since May 27 but stumbled into the break with a poor start in a no decision against Seattle on July 6. The Florida native was ripped for four runs on five hits – three home runs – and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Fiers was held out of the decision at Oakland on April 29 despite scattering two runs and seven hits across seven innings.

Graveman started at Houston before the break and allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings without a walk to earn the win. The 25-year-old surrendered two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts and yielded only one home run in that span. Graveman was also ripped for five runs in 4 1/3 innings at Houston on June 4 and is 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA in four career starts against the Astros.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Athletics LHP Rich Hill was removed from his start on Sunday after five pitches due to a blister and is start-to-start.

          2. Astros All-Star 2B Jose Altuve went 4-for-5 on Sunday to lift his AL-leading average .346.

          3. Houston INF Marwin Gonzalez is 5-for-13 with four extra-base hits and five runs scored in the last three games.

          PREDICTION: Athletics 4, Astros 3

              5-Day Forecast
GAME: Texas Rangers (55-38) at Los Angeles Angels (40-52)
              DATE/TIME: Monday, July 18 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California

The American League-leading Texas Rangers hit a bit of a skid with four straight losses bridging the All-Star break but managed to pull out a win on Sunday to turn the momentum as they continue a nine-game road trip. The Rangers will head to California on Monday to visit the last-place Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series.

Texas got a tough assignment out of the break with an interleague series at the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs and totaled one run while dropping the first two games. A gem from Cole Hamels in a 4-1 win on Sunday helped the Rangers avoid a sweep and improved them to 26-23 on the road with a trip to defending-champion Kansas City coming up next weekend. The Angels became the last AL West team to reach 40 wins when they capped off a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with an 8-1 triumph on Sunday. Los Angeles outscored Chicago 16-1 in the series and has won seven of its last nine games overall while surrendering an average of 2.3 runs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (3-1, 3.81 ERA) vs. Angels RH Nick Tropeano (3-2, 3.12)

Griffin has yet to go more than five innings since coming off the disabled list on June 25 and went into the All-Star break on a sour note. The California native was ripped for six runs on nine hits in five frames against Minnesota on July 10 and has surrendered five home runs in 18 1/3 innings since coming off the DL. Griffin allowed three runs in six innings to beat Los Angeles on April 8 and is 3-2 with a 3.08 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

Tropeano is a part of Los Angeles’ pitching resurgence of late but is not getting enough offensive support to end up in the win column. The 25-year-old allowed a total of three runs – all on solo homers – over 11 innings while striking out 12 in his last two turns but did not get a decision in either. Tropeano’s last win came at Texas on May 23, when he scattered four hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out six.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Angels 1B Albert Pujols hit a pair of home runs on Sunday to push his career total to 577, six short of tying Mark McGwire for 10th on the all-time list.

              2. Texas RF Shin-Soo Choo (back) missed the last three games and is day-to-day.

              3. Los Angeles leadoff hitter 3B Yunel Escobar is 5-for-11 with three runs scored in the last three games.

              PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Angels 3

GAME: Chicago White Sox (45-46) at Seattle Mariners (46-46)
                  DATE/TIME: Monday, July 18 - 10:10 PM EST

The Chicago White Sox offense is reaching new levels of incompetence as the club drifts under .500. The White Sox will attempt to string a few hits together when they continue their west coast trip by visiting the Seattle Mariners for the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Chicago was shut out 2-0 by the Atlanta Braves to close the first half and was blanked in each of the first two games of the second half at the Los Angeles Angels on Friday and Saturday. Adam Eaton’s RBI double in the third inning of Sunday’s 8-1 setback snapped a 34-inning scoreless streak, and the White Sox went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position in the three games against the Angels. The Mariners have dropped seven of their last 10 games and are not much better than Chicago at the plate with a total of five runs scored in the last three contests. Seattle is trying to hang around the fringes of the wild-card race in the American League and is looking at a schedule that pits it against winning teams in 12 straight games after the White Sox.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (14-3, 3.38 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 3.52)

Sale started the All-Star Game for the American League on Tuesday and surrendered a solo home run in his lone inning, continuing a trend that saw him get bashed for six homers in his final three starts before the break. The Florida native was ripped for eight runs on 10 hits - three homers – and two walks in five innings against light-hitting Atlanta on July 8. Sale has never lost to the Mariners in his career and is 4-0 with a 2.66 ERA in seven games – five starts.

LeBlanc posted a pair of quality starts in his first two chances with the Mariners before getting roughed up for five runs – four earned – and six hits in 3 1/3 innings at Houston on July 6. The veteran journeyman recorded 10 strikeouts and three walks while yielding a pair of home runs in those first three outings. LeBlanc has worked four scoreless innings of relief in his career against the White Sox.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Mariners C Chris Iannetta sat out Saturday and Sunday and is mired in a 0-for-17 slump.

                  2. Chicago rookie SS Tim Anderson is 0-for-11 with six strikeouts in the last three games.

                  3. Seattle RF Nelson Cruz (foot) sat out Saturday and was limited to two at-bats before being removed on Sunday.

PREDICTION: White Sox 3, Mariners 2
