    Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (52-40) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-53)
    DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 8:10 PM EST
    WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers own the best post All-Star break record in the majors over the last three-plus years, and their opener to this season's second half proved they are serious about holding on to that distinction. The Dodgers aim for their 20th victory in the last 28 outings Saturday as they continue a three-game set in Arizona versus the Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles pounded out 18 hits en route to a 13-7 win over Arizona on Friday and watched backup utilityman Chris Taylor - a career .237 hitter who had yet to homer in 249 at-bats entering the contest - finish a single shy of the cycle, hit a grand slam and record six RBIs in the rout. The victory moved the Dodgers within 5 1/2 games of National League West-leading San Francisco and also improved their second-half record since the start of the 2013 campaign to 127-79 - maintaining their status as the only club to win at least 60 percent of their post-Midsummer Classic contests over that span. While Los Angeles is surging, Arizona has dropped five straight and 13 of its last 15 to completely fall out of the NL West race. The Diamondbacks own the second-worst home mark in the majors (15-33) and have been unable to find much success against the Dodgers in general, going 12-33 in their 45 meetings - the worst record for any team against a divisional foe since the start of the 2014 season.
TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN Arizona Plus

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 2.70 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (3-5, 4.64)
McCarthy has stepped up with five strong innings and a victory in each of his first two turns since returning from Tommy John surgery on July 3. The 33-year-old, who made 22 starts in his only year with the Diamondbacks in 2013, permitted three runs on three hits and three walks versus San Diego after producing a scoreless performance against Colorado. McCarthy never has faced Arizona but has baffled right-handed hitters so far this season, giving up only two hits in 22 at-bats.
Bradley ended up on the wrong end of a one-hitter by Madison Bumgarner in San Francisco on Sunday and took a hard-luck loss as a result, yielding two runs while fanning six in as many frames. The 23-year-old Oklahoman has allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five outings, but he has only one win to show for it over that span. Bradley surrendered five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on June 14, falling to 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two career starts against them.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Los Angeles LHP Adam Liberatore has made a team-record 24 consecutive scoreless appearances spanning 18 2/3 innings. Over that stretch, opponents are 5-for-58 and have struck out 23 times against him.
    2. Arizona LHP Patrick Corbin singled in his only at-bat Friday, giving the Diamondbacks' pitching staff their 36th hit of the season - matching its total from all of last season.
    3. Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig went 3-for-6 in the opener and is batting .333 in 20 games since returning from the disabled list on June 21.

    PREDICTION: Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 3

        Preview: Giants at Padres

GAME: San Francisco Giants (57-34) at San Diego Padres (39-51)
        DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres are clearly playing for the future following Thursday’s trade of All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz to Boston, but they still could play a key role in the National League West race. The Padres have won 12 of their last 21 games heading into Saturday’s contest against the visiting San Francisco Giants, who lead the division by 5 1/2 games over the second-place Dodgers.

San Diego snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Giants with a 4-1 victory Friday as All-Star first baseman Wil Myers belted his 20th home run among two hits and scored twice. The Padres still have several players on the trade block, including catcher Derek Norris and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., but the 25-year-old Myers could be a major part of the team’s rebuilding efforts. The Padres have plenty of work ahead of them to catch up to the Giants, who have gone 26-7 against NL West foes since April 25 and boast the majors’ best record at 57-34. San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford is 9-for-20 during his six-game hitting streak while right fielder Hunter Pence (hamstring) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Saturday and could return in about a week.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. Padres RH Luis Perdomo (3-4, 7.48)

Samardzija allowed two runs and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings against Arizona on July 8 to win for the first time in his last four starts. The strong outing came at a good time for the 31-year-old, who had yielded a total of 16 runs over his previous three starts covering 16 1/3 innings. Samardzija owns a 6-1 record with a 2.90 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) against San Diego, including 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in three starts at Petco Park.

Perdomo turned in an another encouraging effort last Saturday while holding the Dodgers to four runs (two earned) in a career-high tying six innings. “Ever since he’s become a starter, he’s been great,” Myers told reporters. “He's becoming more confident. He can pitch, and we know he can compete at this level.” The 23-year-old is set to make his eighth career start and first against the Giants after facing them twice in relief earlier this season.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The Padres placed Upton Jr. on the bereavement list and recalled INF/OF Alexi Amarista and LHP Buddy Baumann from Triple-A El Paso.

        2. Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) allowed nine runs and 10 hits over four innings in a minor-league rehab start for Class A Lancaster on Friday. Cain is expected to start for the Giants on Wednesday against Boston.

        3. San Diego 2B Cory Spangenberg (quad) suffered a setback in his rehab and may not return this season.

        PREDICTION: Giants 7, Padres 4

            Preview: White Sox at Angels

GAME: Chicago White Sox (45-44) at Los Angeles Angels (38-52)
            DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox look to avoid a third straight shutout loss when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Chicago ended the first half of the season with a 2-0 setback against Atlanta and returned from the All-Star break with very little punch, recording only five hits in a 7-0 defeat to Los Angeles in Friday's series opener.

Adam Eaton registered a single and a double for his fourth two-hit performance in seven games while Justin Morneau made his debut with the White Sox following offseason elbow surgery and grounded out as a pinch-hitter. The Angels regrouped after dropping their last two games before the break, using a five-run rally in the seventh inning to help improve to 5-2 in their last seven. Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 on Friday after collecting 19 RBIs over his previous 23 contests. Yunel Escobar has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games following a 2-for-4 effort in the series opener.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (4-10, 5.42 ERA) vs. Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (4-9, 4.45)

Shields has performed much better of late, going 2-1 over his last four starts while allowing fewer than three runs in three of the outings. It has been a big turnaround for the 34-year-old Californian, who was tagged for 22 runs and 24 hits in 8 2/3 innings over his first three turns after being acquired from San Diego. Shields, who has reached double digits in losses for the fifth time in his 11-year career, is 6-3 with two complete games, one shutout and a 3.31 ERA in 13 career starts against the Angels.

Shoemaker halted a string of four straight losses July 8 when he notched the win at Baltimore despite giving up three runs in five innings.
