      Preview: Rockies at Braves

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Colorado Rockies (40-48) at Atlanta Braves (31-58)
      DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 7:35 PM EST
      WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

As the Colorado Rockies open their second-half schedule Friday against the Braves in Atlanta, rookie Trevor Story hopes to find his hitting stroke after a rough start to July. The 23-year-old, who captured baseball’s attention by blasting 10 home runs in the season's first month, is hitting just .185 in July with 10 strikeouts in 27 at-bats.

The Rockies dropped seven of their first 10 games this month after finishing the first three just four games under .500. Atlanta won a major league-low 31 games before the All-Star break but is 22-30 under interim manager Brian Snitker and has been far more competitive of late. Freddie Freeman finished the first half on one of the hottest tears of his career, batting .381 with seven homers and a 1.197 OPS in his last 27 games. The Braves did suffer some bad news over the break, learning that catcher Tyler Flowers will miss four-to-six weeks with a broken left hand.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Jorge De La Rosa (5-6, 5.74 ERA) vs. Braves RH Lucas Harrell (1-0, 1.32)

De La Rosa began the season in the starting rotation before posting an 11.41 ERA in six turns but has pitched well since returning from the bullpen, going 3-2 with a 2.61 ERA in five outings. He lost his final two turns before the All-Star break but was effective in the pair of seven-inning appearances, giving up two runs in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and three in a setback against San Francisco. The 35-year-old De La Rosa, who is two victories shy of 100 for his career, went 0-1 in two starts versus Atlanta last season.

Harrell has impressed in his first two major-league starts since 2014, allowing only two runs and seven hits in 13 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old beat Miami in his debut with Atlanta on July 2, giving up one run and three hits in six frames, and held the Chicago Cubs to one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings of a no-decision five days later. Harrell, who signed with the Braves as a free agent on May 20, is 2-2 with a 6.53 ERA in four career appearances against Colorado.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. The Braves are on pace to finish 56-106, which would be the franchise’s worst record since it went 54-106 in 1988.

      2. Story leads all rookies in home runs (21), launching more blasts on the road (11) than at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

      3. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado leads the National League with 70 RBIs and is hitting .287 - the average he posted in both 2014 and 2015.

      PREDICTION: Braves 4, Rockies 3

          Preview: Indians at Twins

          Current Conditions - Minneapolis

          M/CLOUDY 66 °F
          Wind: CLM 0
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cleveland Indians (52-36) at Minnesota Twins (32-56)
          DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 8:10 PM EST
          WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians look to continue their charge toward a second postseason berth in four years on Friday when they begin a nine-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series versus the Minnesota Twins. Although Cleveland holds a comfortable 6 1/2-game lead atop the American League Central, it has lost four of six to cellar-dwelling Minnesota this season.

A winless nine-game stretch to open the season put the tumbling Twins behind the 8-ball, although the club has found its offense by scoring 140 runs with a .287 batting average during a 12-9 spurt heading into the All-Star break. Veteran Joe Mauer is 10-for-23 with five runs scored in his last six games overall and 8-for-16 with two RBIs versus Friday starter Carlos Carrasco. Cleveland has some offense in its own right in the form of Francisco Lindor, who has seven runs scored during his six-game hitting streak. The All-Star shortstop is batting an impressive .361 in 19 career games versus Minnesota.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (5-3, 2.47 ERA) vs. Twins RH Ervin Santana (3-7, 4.06)

Carrasco was let down by three errors in his last outings, as the 29-year-old Venezuelan was tagged for five runs in 3 2/3 innings in an 11-7 setback versus the New York Yankees on Sunday. Carrasco's run total eclipsed the sum of his previous four outings (29 2/3 innings), during which he is 3-0. His fortunes have taken a tumble when facing the Twins, however, as he is 1-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 12 career appearances (nine starts).

Minnesota's most reliable starter, Santana scattered two hits in a 4-0 shutout of Oakland on July 6 to improve to 2-0 with a 1.63 ERA in his last four starts. The 33-year-old is looking to drive up his trade value when he faces Cleveland, against which he allowed one run in six innings of a 6-3 victory on May 14. Traditionally, Santana has struggled versus the Indians to the tune of a 5-10 career mark with a 4.32 ERA in 20 appearances.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Minnesota RF Max Kepler has fit in well as an everyday player, highlighted by his seven homers and 26 RBIs over his last 20 games.

          2. Cleveland is 26-11 versus AL Central representatives while the Twins are just 6-21 versus their division rivals.

          3. Minnesota SS Eduardo Nunez has 14 hits in his last eight games, but is batting just .218 in his career versus the Indians.

          PREDICTION: Indians 5, Twins 2

The St. Louis Cardinals must play better at home if they are seriously interested in punching their ticket to the postseason party for the sixth straight year. After losing 10 of their last 14 at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals look to give their fans a reason to cheer on Friday when the club opens a 10-game homestand with the first of three contests against the Miami Marlins.

St. Louis, which has dropped 26 home games to match last season's sum total, headed into the All-Star break having won three of four to improve to 6-4 in July. Miami also is entertaining a shot at the postseason, with president of baseball operations Michael Hill saying, "This is a good team. This is a playoff team. What is encouraging is we still aren't playing our best baseball." Giancarlo Stanton regained his form after a brutal stretch by going deep five times in his last five games before winning the Home Run Derby with a record-setting performance on Monday. The slugger enters Friday's opener of a seven-game trek on a seven-game hitting streak, with 10 RBIs and seven runs scored during the stretch.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Wei-Yin Chen (5-3, 4.83 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (6-6, 4.01)

Chen received the nod on Friday after ace Jose Fernandez competed in the All-Star Game. The 31-year-old native of Taiwan has answered a difficult three-game stretch by turning in two strong performances in his last three - highlighted by a one-run, three-hit effort in seven innings of a 5-2 triumph over the New York Mets. Chen has pitched well on the road (4-2, 4.13 ERA) and will face the Cardinals for the first time in his career.

Although 2-0 in his last four outings, Garcia was fortunate to walk away with a no-decision on July 6 after being taken deep twice and allowing four runs in five innings versus Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old has permitted seven homers in his last six trips to the mound after being taken deep just three times in his previous 11. Garcia has reeled in the Marlins in his career, posting a 2-0 mark with a 1.07 ERA in four outings.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. St. Louis SS Aledmys Diaz has two homers, six RBIs and five runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

              2. Marlins OF Marcell Ozuna is 10-for-59 (.169) in his career versus the Cardinals.

              3. St. Louis leads the majors with 68 errors.

              PREDICTION: Cardinals 3, Marlins 2

                  Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (51-40) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-52)
                  DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 9:40 PM EST
                  WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
                  LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

When the Arizona Diamondbacks signed star right-hander Zack Greinke away from the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason, it was one of several moves that many thought would level the playing field between the National League West rivals. Instead, Greinke is on the disabled list and the Diamondbacks are in last place when they open the second half of the season at home against the surging Dodgers on Friday.

Los Angeles won its final three contests before the All-Star break and went 18-8 overall prior to the intermission to get within 6 1/2 games of first-place San Francisco. Arizona, meanwhile, limped into the break with losses in 12 of its last 14 games, including four straight prior to end the first half in which it was outscored 27-10. While the Diamondbacks wait for Greinke's return - possibly in the second turn through the rotation after the break - they have sent struggling pitcher Shelby Miller to the minors and hope to get something from Patrick Corbin, who has had his issues of late, too. The Dodgers will give the ball to relative newcomer Bud Norris, who allowed a run in one inning of relief against Arizona earlier this year and has given up an alarming 33 earned runs in 21 1/3 frames in his career versus the Diamondbacks.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Bud Norris (4-7, 3.98 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (4-7, 4.94)

Norris is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts since being acquired in a trade with Atlanta. He has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his seven outings since returning to a starting role for the Braves early last month. The 31-year-old is 0-4 with an unsightly 15.07 ERA in five career games (three starts) at Arizona's Chase Field.

Corbin has failed to complete five innings in two of his last three starts and has allowed at least five runs in each of those three outings. He is 0-5 with a 6.60 ERA in six appearances at home. The 26-year-old is 3-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 11 career games (10 starts) versus the Dodgers.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez is 11-for-20 with four doubles and a homer in his last five games.

                  2. Los Angeles RHP Kenley Jansen has not allowed a run in his last 14 1/3 innings while yielding only three hits.

                  3. Greinke (oblique) is expected to play catch this week before moving to the next step in his rehab.

                  PREDICTION: Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 4

The Chicago White Sox hope to get back in the thick of the race for the American League Central title as they begin the second half of the season Friday with the opener of a three-game series against the Angels in Los Angeles. Chicago was at or near the top of the division for most of the first two months of the campaign before falling off and begins its six-game road trip tied for third with Kansas City, seven games behind first-place Cleveland.

The White Sox appeared to be turning things around prior to the All-Star break, winning seven of 10 contests before dropping a 2-0 decision to Atlanta on Sunday. While Chicago may have a better shot at a wild-card spot in the AL, as it sits 4 1/2 games out of the second berth, Los Angeles has a lot of work to do in order to contend for a trip to the postseason. The Angels occupy the basement in the AL West, trailing first-place Texas by 16 1/2 games, and are 13 behind Toronto for the second wild card with seven teams between them. Los Angeles had won four straight before losing the final two contests of its three-game series against the Orioles, including a 4-2 setback Sunday at Baltimore.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Miguel Gonzalez (2-4, 4.39 ERA) vs. Angels LH Hector Santiago (6-4, 4.58)

Gonzalez gets the call in place of Jose Quintana, who was added to the American League All-Star roster as an injury replacement and tossed a scoreless inning in Tuesday's contest. The 32-year-old Gonzalez was superb against the New York Yankees on July 6, scattering five hits over seven scoreless innings to halt his personal three-game losing streak. The Mexican has made five career starts against the Angels, going 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA.

Santiago is unbeaten in his last five starts, going 3-0 while allowing fewer than two runs on four occasions. The 28-year-old native of New Jersey did not yield an earned run in either of his last two outings, giving up one unearned in a victory at Boston on July 2 before scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings in a win at Tampa Bay five days later. Santiago, who spent his first three major-league seasons with Chicago, improved to 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in two career starts against his former team on April 18 as he held the host White Sox to two hits and three walks while registering a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless frames.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. The Angels, who are 15-6 at home against the White Sox since 2011, split a four-game series in Chicago from April 18-21.

                      2. Los Angeles 1B C.J. Cron underwent surgery on his fractured left hand Tuesday and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

                      3. Chicago 1B Justin Morneau (elbow) has gone 3-for-20 over seven games of his rehab assignment and could make his debut with the team during this series.

PREDICTION: Angels 5, White Sox 3

The Toronto Blue Jays aim to strengthen their hold on a postseason position against one of the American League's bottom-feeders when they begin a three-game road series versus the Oakland Athletics on Friday. Toronto entered the All-Star break sitting in the second wild-card spot in the AL, just a few percentage points behind Boston, and trails East-leading Baltimore by two games.

The Blue Jays are hitting the road for the first time in July after defeating Detroit 6-1 on Sunday to improve to 8-2 at home to start the month. Oakland is near the bottom of the AL West, a mere one game ahead of the last-place Los Angeles Angels. The Athletics return home after concluding the first half of the season with a 3-4 road trip after dropping a 2-1 decision at Houston on Sunday. Oakland has lost four straight contests and 10 of its last 13 at the Coliseum.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (7-4, 4.89 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Rich Hill (9-3, 2.25)

Stroman is coming off his fourth eight-inning effort this season and first since May 1, a victory over Kansas City on July 6 in which he allowed two runs and three hits while recording six strikeouts. The 25-year-old from Medford, N.Y., has given up only three runs over 14 2/3 frames in his last two outings after surrendering 11 over 8 2/3 innings in his previous two turns. Stroman made his only career start against the Athletics on July 4, 2014, settling for a no-decision despite scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings at Oakland.

Hill looks to further increase his value with the trade deadline growing nearer as he attempts to extend his personal winning streak to seven games. The 36-year-old native of Boston worked six strong innings at Houston on July 7, allowing one run and three hits while matching his season high with 10 strikeouts. Hill is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 10 career games (three starts) against Toronto.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. The Blue Jays, who have won 18 of their last 25 games, have recorded at least 50 victories at the All-Star break for the first time since 1992.

                          2. Oakland's Marcus Semien is first in the AL and second to Colorado rookie Trevor Story among major-league shortstops with a career-high 19 home runs.

                          3. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson joined Lou Gehrig (1936), Ted Williams (1946), Reggie Jackson (1969), Frank Thomas (1994) and Alex Rodriguez (2000) as the only players in AL history to record 20 home runs and 80 RBIs prior to the All-Star break.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 4, Athletics 2

Two teams hoping to make a second-half run at American League West-leading Texas meet Friday as the Seattle Mariners begin a three-game series against the visiting Houston Astros. Seattle sits 8 1/2 games behind the Rangers while the surging Astros have gone 31-13 since May 23 to pull within 5 1/2 games of first place.

Seattle has been plagued by inconsistent play and was swept by the Astros in a three-game series at Houston earlier this month, but it has the type of offense that could carry the club into the postseason. Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager and Nelson Cruz rank among the league leaders in multiple categories, while the first-base platoon of Adam Lind and Dae-Ho Lee has combined for 25 home runs. Cano is hitting .463 with six homers and 19 RBIs in 10 games this season against the Astros, who were 7-17 in April but are seven games over .500 at the break for the second consecutive season. “We haven't played our best, but I’ll take my team against any team in the league,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. “I don't know what that means. I don’t know what declaration that is, but I like my team the best.”

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Doug Fister (8-6, 3.55 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (2-3, 3.91)

Fister was the hard-luck loser last Thursday against Oakland, allowing just two runs and three hits over eight strong innings. The 32-year-old has lost three straight outings after winning his previous seven decisions. Lind is 2-for-17 while Seager is 5-for-16 with a home run against Fister, who is 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners - including 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA in two outings earlier this season.

Paxton has provided a much-needed boost to Seattle's rotation by going 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA and 38 strikeouts in his last seven starts. The 27-year-old allowed two runs while throwing an efficient 78 pitches over eight innings in last Thursday’s outing against Kansas City. Paxton, who has worked at least six frames in five of his last seven starts, yielded two runs and struck out seven over seven innings in his only previous turn against the Astros on April 30, 2015.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez (calf) remains on schedule to return from the disabled list on July 20.

                              2. Houston OF Colby Rasmus missed the last four games before the All-Star break with an ear infection but is expected to return Friday.

                              3. The Mariners have gone 7-2 over their last nine home contests.

                              PREDICTION: Mariners 6, Astros 3
