MLB notebook: Cubs' Schwarber sidelined for rest of season
By The Sports Xchange
Chicago Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber will be sidelined for the rest of the season after tearing two ligaments in his left knee in an outfield collision during Thursday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Schwarber tore both the ACL and LCL and also severely sprained his ankle, the Cubs announced Friday.
Schwarber and center field Dexter Fowler collided while chasing a ball in the left-center-field gap hit by Arizona second baseman Jean Segura. Fowler rammed into Schwarber's legs and the 23-year-old writhed in pain on the warning track as Segura circled the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
Jorge Soler will start in left field against the Diamondbacks on Friday. Versatile Munenori Kawasaki was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to fill Schwarber's roster spot.
--San Diego Padres left-hander Matt Thornton was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, due to left Achilles tendinitis. Left-hander Robbie Erlin was recalled from Triple-A El Paso.
--Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, who left the game against Tampa Bay on Wednesday with a strained right calf muscle, returned to the lineup on Friday as designated hitter.
--Cincinnati Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani will not start Sunday's series finale against the Pirates as originally planned. He is on the disabled list with a strained left oblique and still isn't 100 percent.
The Reds selected the contract of first baseman Brandon Allen from Triple-A Louisville.
Also, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips returned to the lineup after missing two games with a stomach virus.
--The St. Louis Cardinal traded left-handed pitcher Jayson Aquino to the Baltimore Orioles for cash. Aquino was designated for assignment on Sunday. He has a 2.94 ERA in six minor league seasons.
