    This Week's Best NHL Bets
    By Covers.com

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Jan. 20-26

    Hot team

    San Jose Sharks (3-0 SU)

The Anaheim Ducks may be well in control of the Pacific Division, and the Western Conference, for that matter. But the rival Sharks have served notice that they won't go quietly. The Sharks won a trio of one-goal games this past week to extend their winning streak to six games and kept pace with the surging Ducks, who lead the division by nine points. Five of San Jose's six wins during the string have been by one goal - suggesting some luck may be involved - and the week ahead includes difficult home games against Los Angeles and Chicago.

    Cold team

    Montreal Canadiens (0-3 SU)

It's officially panic time in La Belle Province after the Canadiens had what was easily their worst week of the season. After opening with a 5-1 defeat in Pittsburgh and a 4-1 loss in Detroit to close out a 1-3-0 road swing, Montreal's losing streak reached four games with one of its worst efforts of the campaign - a 5-0 thumping at the hands of visiting Washington. How bad was it for the Canadiens? By the time netminder Carey Price was pulled after allowing the Capitals' fourth goal, the shots favored Washington 26-3.

    Best Over play

    Toronto Maple Leafs (4-0 O/U)

The Maple Leafs have not only provided fans with reason to believe in the team again, they've also given bettors the strongest Over play in the NHL the past two weeks. Toronto went a perfect 4-0 on the Over/Under last week, earning a 4-2 victory in Phoenix and a 5-2 triumph in Colorado before concluding its road trip with a 7-1 loss in Dallas and a 5-4 overtime defeat in Winnipeg. The offense is back in business after slumping mightily for a stretch earlier in the month. The defense and goaltending, however, have struggled for most of January.

    Best Under play

    Washington Capitals (0-3 O/U)

The Capitals were one of the few teams in the league not providing any value on the Over and it's a good-news/bad-news proposition for the club. Washington surrendered just four goals in three games this week but still lost two of them, managing just one goal in back-to-back losses to the Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils. The Capitals finally ended their scoring slump - and a season-worst seven-game losing streak - with that win over the Canadiens. Games in Buffalo, Columbus and Detroit could help keep the offensive surge going.

    Surveying the schedule

The Tampa Bay Lightning have astounded even the most optimistic observer, rolling along despite being without top goal threat Steven Stamkos. The Lightning find themselves in a battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference, but will face a major test with a a four-game road trip coming up. Tampa Bay kicks things off in Toronto Tuesday before squaring off against Ottawa Thursday and wrapping up its three-city Canadian tour in Montreal Saturday night.

Kings at Sharks: What Bettors Need to Know
        By Covers.com

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-156, 5)

Pacific Division rivals heading in opposite directions meet on Monday night as the red-hot San Jose Sharks vie for their seventh straight victory when they host the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks remained unbeaten on their four-game homestand with a 3-2 overtime triumph over Minnesota on Saturday. Home has also been a safe haven when Los Angeles pays a visit - as San Jose has won the last seven regular-season meetings.

While the Sharks are doing their best to keep pace with surging Anaheim, the Kings fell for the fifth straight outing with a 3-0 setback against the Ducks at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. The loss to Anaheim was the second in three days for Los Angeles, which is trying to avoid its first six-game winless skid in over six years (Dec. 12-26, 2007). Anze Kopitar scored his team's last goal in the first period on Thursday, but was denied on a penalty-shot opportunity two nights later.

LINE: The line opened with the Sharks as -156 faves. The total is at 5.

ABOUT THE KINGS (29-18-6): Captain Dustin Brown's knee-on-knee hit against San Jose rookie Tomas Hertl was the primary talking point coming out of Los Angeles' 4-1 triumph on Dec. 19. Brown has admitted that his hit was not intended to injure the flashy Hertl, while the Sharks took issue with how Los Angeles handled the situation. Brown has collected only three goals and an assist since that outing - and has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last six games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (34-12-6): Signed to a three-year contract extension on Friday, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau paid immediate dividends the following night. The captain scored his second goal on Saturday at 3:30 of overtime to defeat the Wild and increase his career point total to 1,173 - putting him within six of Sergei Fedorov for a share of 47th place on the all-time list. Marleau also tallied as San Jose improved to 3-0-0 on its homestand.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 3-0-2 in the last five meetings in San Jose.
        * Under is 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings.
        * Home team is 23-6 in the last 29 meetings.
        * Kings are 15-36 in the last 51 meetings in San Jose.

        OVERTIME:

        1. San Jose C Joe Pavelski is riding a five-game point streak (seven goals, three assists), but was held off the scoresheet in the first meeting versus the Kings.

        2. Quick has yielded just nine goals en route to losing his last four decisions (0-3-1).

        3. The Sharks have recorded five one-goal victories during their winning streak.

Avalanche at Stars: What Bettors Need to Know
          By Covers.com

Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars (-120, 5.5)

The Dallas Stars look to remain perfect on their homestand when they face off against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. Dallas outscored its opponents 14-1 while winning each of the first three contests on its five-game stretch at home, sandwiching shutout victories around a 7-1 rout of Toronto. The Stars put the clamps on Pittsburgh's potent offense Saturday, recording a 3-0 triumph as Kari Lehtonen posted his third shutout of the season while notching his fourth assist.

Colorado is wrapping up a three-game road trip during which it split the first two contests. One night after skating to a 3-2 victory at Florida on Friday, the Avalanche dropped a 5-2 decision at Tampa Bay despite receiving a goal and an assist from defenseman Tyson Barrie. The Avalanche and Stars are completing their five-game season series that began with three straight victories by Colorado.

LINE: Dallas opened as -110 faves and now sit at -120. The total is at 5.5.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (32-14-5): With Jean-Sebastien Giguere sidelined due to back spasms, Sami Aittokallio made his season debut Saturday against the Lightning. The 21-year-old Finn, who appeared in one game last campaign after being selected in the fourth round of the 2010 draft, lasted only two periods as he allowed three goals on 18 shots. Defenseman Nate Guenin was in the lineup Saturday for the first time since Jan. 4 due to an ankle injury.

ABOUT THE STARS (24-20-8): Jamie Benn has been a catalyst on offense during Dallas' winning streak, collecting two goals and four assists. The captain recorded just three points in his previous seven contests. Tyler Seguin has notched three assists during the homestand but has gone 12 games without a goal.

          TRENDS:

          * Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
          * Over is 18-8 in the last 26 meetings in Dallas.
          * Avalanche are 4-1 in their last five road games.
          * Stars are 4-1 in their last five home games.

          OVERTIME:

          1. Dallas is seeking a season-high fourth straight win after beginning the month with a 1-8-1 record.

          2. Avalanche rookie C Nathan MacKinnon has recorded two goals and three assists over his last four games after notching just one goal in his previous five contests.

          3. The Stars are 5-for-12 on the power play over the last three games.
