NHL Betting: Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins

Sidney Crosby has a healthy lead in the NHL scoring race, and his Pittsburgh Penguins have a healthy lead atop the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference standings. Crosby and the Penguins will be looking to stay on a roll on Wednesday night this week as they host Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in one of the marquee NHL betting matchups coming up.

Penguins cruising to a Metropolitan Division title

The Penguins look like a slam dunk to win the Metropolitan Division title this season, with a 33-12-2 record after 47 games while their closest competitors in the division hover around the .500 mark. Pittsburgh is also 19-3-0 at home this season for their supporters on the NHL Betting Lines, they're 7-2-1 in their 10 most recent games, and they should be rested heading into their game on Wednesday night as they'll have been off since completing their Western Canada swing on Saturday; the Pens beat the Canucks last Tuesday night, fell in a shootout to the Oilers on Friday night, and then got past the Flames 2-1 on Saturday night. Pittsburgh is 3-0-1 so far in January.

And it's Crosby that continues to lead the way for the Penguins, with a league-leading 67 points in 47 games and eight points so far in five January outings. Chris Kunitz (49 points in 47 games), Evgeni Malkin (46 points in 36 games), and James Neal (36 points in 27 games) are getting the job done on offense as well for the team, while Marc-Andre Fleury is 26-10-1 with a 2.24 GAA.

Capitals look to end a skid against the Penguins

The Capitals are one of the teams hovering around the .500 mark in the Metropolitan Division, and not only are they allowing the Penguins to run away and hide in those standings but they're riding a five-game losing streak against Crosby and company heading into their NHL ODDS matchup on Wednesday night. That includes a 4-0 Pittsburgh victory in Washington in their first meeting of the season on November 20, with Fleury recording the 18-save shutout that day for the Pens and Crosby collecting a goal and an assist. Malkin had two assists in that Pens victory.

That November game was an UNDER result for totals bettors at BOVADA, and despite the presence of scoring stars like Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin the OVER/UNDER is just 3-7 in the last 10 games between the two teams. Puck drop for Wednesday's game is set for 8:00pm ET, with Washington first playing at home against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night. In fact, the Capitals will be finishing up a run of five games in just seven nights when they meet the Penguins.
