Preview: Blues (49-24) at Stars (50-23)

    Date: May 07, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

Kari Lehtonen might have ended the Dallas Stars' recent goaltender carousel after leading them to a crucial overtime victory. Coach Lindy Ruff wasn't exactly forthcoming, however, choosing a deadpan statement over a ringing endorsement.

In all likelihood, Lehtonen will stand between the pipes for the Stars' attempt to take command of their Western Conference semifinal series against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

Lehtonen made 24 saves in a 3-2 win Thursday that tied the series at 2-all and became the first Stars goaltender to complete a start in three contests. He was pulled after the first period in Game 2 and replaced Antti Niemi early in the second in Game 3, a 6-1 drubbing Tuesday.

"I think Kari stepped up to the plate tonight and brought us a great game. Made some big saves in there," captain Jamie Benn told the league's official website. "It was definitely huge for this hockey club."

With the Stars alternating Lehtonen and Niemi for much of this season, Ruff is likely accustomed to playing it close to the chest on who will serve as his starter.

"Now we've got a decision to make again next game with these two goalies," Ruff said before giving a sideways glance and a slight smirk.

Dallas is hoping its return home resembles its 2-1 victory in the series opener with Lehtonen in net rather than its 4-3 overtime defeat in Game 2.

"It's best two out of three now," forward Jason Spezza said. "We're excited to be going home. We've got to go home and try to win a game."

The teams have split four matchups in Dallas this season, and Lehtonen has yielded one goal on 54 shots in the two wins.

"They've got home-ice advantage again. We've got our work cut out for us," St. Louis captain David Backes said. "We've got to put this one behind us like we put the other ones behind us and worry about going in there Saturday afternoon and winning a game."

The Blues will try to steal back home-ice advantage while adding to their recent special-teams prowess. They are 5 for 15 on the power play in the past three games after going 1 for 3 on Thursday.

St. Louis has given up one goal in their 14 times short-handed in this series, Patrick Sharp's second-period tally in Game 4.

That helped lead to Dallas' first overtime victory in three tries in this postseason, coming on Cody Eakin's first goal of the playoffs. St. Louis is 2-2 in the extra period.

"I said it's time for us to man up, and I thought we did," Ruff said. "I thought our leaders were our leaders. I thought Jamie Benn was great again, and I thought some young guys played really well."

Benn is among the NHL playoff leaders with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) after producing two assists Thursday. He had one goal and one assist in the first three games of this series.

Tyler Seguin (lower body) and Patrick Eaves (leg) are expected to sit out again. The Blues might replace rookie defenseman Joel Edmundson, who committed a costly turnover in Game 4, with Robert Bortuzzo.

St. Louis' Vladimir Tarasenko will try to stay in the groove after totaling two goals and three assists in the two home games. Tarasenko, who has a team-best six goals and five assists in this postseason, was held without a point in the two games in Dallas.

St. Louis is 0-4 in Game 5s since closing out its opening-round series against San Jose in 2012.

The Stars have lost their last two Game 5s, including 5-4 in overtime to Minnesota in the opening round.

Preview: Penguins (48-26) at Capitals (56-18)

    Date: May 07, 2016 7:15 PM EDT

The Pittsburgh Penguins keep on proving the time-worn adage that it isn't how you start, but how you finish.

The NHL's best team over the regular season's final month enters Saturday night's Game 5 of its Eastern Conference semifinal with a chance to send yet another promising Washington Capitals' campaign to a bitter playoff ending.

A matchup between the Presidents' Trophy winners and the league's hottest team down the stretch has so far gone in favor of the latter. The Penguins have registered three straight one-goal victories following a 4-3 overtime loss in Game 1 to put Washington on the brink of elimination as the series shifts back to Verizon Center.

Pittsburgh has moved a big step closer to its first Stanley Cup final since 2009 with consecutive 3-2 wins, with rookie Matt Murray's 47 saves the difference in Monday's Game 3 and Patric Hornqvist playing the hero Wednesday by scoring 2:43 into overtime.

Despite an 0-for-14 showing on the power play and being outshot in each of the last two matchups, the Penguins hold a 3-1 series advantage by making the most of their even-strength opportunities and the 21-year-old Murray outplaying Vezina Trophy favorite Braden Holtby.

"They're a good defensive team and it's the playoffs, it's hard to get scoring chances," Hornqvist said. "But when we get them, we score, and that's part of why we win the game."

Pittsburgh's season-long resiliency continues to show up as well. Murray is 6-1-0 with a 1.81 goals-against average in these playoffs filling in for a now-healthy Marc-Andre Fleury, and the Penguins overcame Kris Letang's Game 4 absence after the cornerstone defenseman was suspended one game for an illegal hit in Monday's win.

Trevor Daley did his part to offset Letang's departure with a huge Game 4. The in-season acquisition scored Pittsburgh's first goal and was a plus-3 in a team-best 28:41 of ice time while helping keep Alex Ovechkin off the scoresheet.

'It wasn't a perfect game by any stretch but we're playing against a pretty good opponent and Tanger's a tough guy to replace,' coach Mike Sullivan said. 'Guys had to play more minutes, more significant roles. I thought the group of them did a tremendous job."

Such performances have been par for the course for Pittsburgh since Sullivan replaced Mike Johnston in mid-December. The Penguins were ninth in the East at the time, but vaulted to second in the Metropolitan Division after a 14-2-0 finish with star forward Evgeni Malkin sidelined for nearly that entire run.

Washington, which went a league-leading 27-6-8 in one-goal games en route to a franchise-record 120 points, returns home in an all-too-familiar position. The Capitals have been a No. 1 or 2 seed three times previously since 2009 and failed to reach the conference finals each time.

The Capitals have recovered from a 3-1 deficit to win a series once in the 11-year Ovechkin era, rallying past the New York Rangers in the 2009 quarterfinals before falling to eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh in the second round.

'We have the experience, the composure,' said Holtby, who has allowed three or more goals in three of the four games. 'It's just a matter of putting it to use now and keep pushing forward. Hopefully the bounces will go our way sooner or later.'

Getting production from sources other than Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie and John Carlson, who have accounted for 12 of the Capitals' 23 postseason goals, would help as well. Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov have been particularly quiet, recording just one assist each in the series after both had at least 70 points in the regular season.

Washington will attempt to stay alive with defenseman Brooks Orpik still unavailable as the ex-Penguin finishes serving a three-game suspension for a high hit on Olli Maatta in Game 2.

Maatta is expected to miss a third straight game after sustaining an upper-body injury on the play. Pittsburgh will have forward Eric Fehr back after the key penalty killer sat out Game 4 with an undisclosed injury.

Preview: Predators (41-27) at Sharks (46-30)

      Date: May 07, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Home-ice advantage has meant everything so far between the San Jose Sharks and the Nashville Predators.

The Sharks are hoping that trend continues.

They'll try to shake off a draining loss as they host a pivotal Game 5 on Saturday in this Western Conference semifinal series.

Nashville evened the series in the longest game in its franchise history and longest of the entire 2016 postseason with a 4-3 victory in triple overtime Thursday on Mike Fisher's second goal of the game. San Jose led in the third period before Roman Josi's goal with 4:21 remaining.

"We'd like to be up but it is what it is and we're going home, we've got two more home games so we've got to make sure that we win 'em," Sharks goalie Martin Jones said.

The home team has won every game, although San Jose had chances to prevent that by outshooting Nashville 25-18 after regulation.

"We had two really good periods in overtime," said center Logan Couture, who had two assists. "Those were our best periods of the series, I think. It's tough we couldn't find a way. We had five or six Grade-A chances. That's the way playoff hockey goes sometimes."

The Predators, who have never advanced past this round, were ecstatic after Pekka Rinne made 44 saves and Colin Wilson had a goal and two assists.

'I don't care how these wins come if we have to play all night,' Rinne said. 'It's 2-2 right now.'

Nashville used better penalty killing at home to get back into the series. The Predators allowed three power-play goals in five chances in San Jose before yielding one in nine in their two home wins.

The Sharks remain confident after outshooting the Predators for the third time in the series, and coach Pete DeBoer bristled when asked why he liked the way San Jose was playing.

"You watched the game, we were good," DeBoer said.

The coach was also angry after a disallowed goal by Joe Pavelski in the first overtime in which the forward was whistled for goaltender interference for crashing into Rinne. Pavelski felt the contact was incidental.

"There's nothing really we can do now other than move on and get ready for the next one," Jones said.

Couture has a team-high six points in the series and Brent Burns has five after the defenseman scored his first two goals of the series Thursday.

Wilson tops Nashville with six points in the series, with seven in a five-game postseason run. Filip Forsberg continued his rough postseason by going pointless for the eighth time in nine games Thursday after leading the Predators in the regular season with 64 points.

Nashville center Mike Ribeiro was a healthy scratch for both home games after he saw ice time in the first two in San Jose.

The Sharks have limited the Predators to one power-play goal in 19 chances in the last eight meetings at home, including the first two in this series.

"The series never gets easier, it only gets harder," Pavelski said. "We have to step up our game, get a big win on home ice and go from there."

This contest takes place 44 hours after Game 4 ended.

'You've got to take care of yourself physically,' Rinne said. 'The next Game 5 is going to be a big one, for both teams it's going to be a long travel and then play again. By that time, you have to be recovered and ready to go."

Dallas Stars coach Lindy Ruff finally may be content with Kari Lehtonen between the pipes after seeing his goaltender carousel undergo several turns in the playoffs. Lehtonen is expected to be in net on Saturday afternoon as the Stars host the Central Division-rival St. Louis Blues in Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

"I'll use the word maturity," Ruff told reporters of Lehtonen on Friday, one day after the latter made 24 saves as Dallas evened the series with a 3-2 overtime win in Game 4. "There's some maturity there. There's some calmness to his game. I think he's living off his past experience, which you want every player to do, and I think he's trying to put that all behind him." St. Louis' Vladimir Tarasenko put his three-game point drought in his rear-view mirror by scoring a goal and setting up two others in a 6-1 rout in Game 3 before adding one of each on Thursday. The 24-year-old Russian has a team-leading six tallies and 11 points in the playoffs.

ABOUT THE BLUES: Coach Ken Hitchcock was quick to praise Paul Stastny's overall performance after the 30-year-old Quebec native scored his first goal of the postseason on Thursday. "He's competing at a very high level, as high as he's ever done since he's been here," Hitchcock told the team's website of Stastny, whose 27 shots are third-best on the team. Fellow forward Jaden Schwartz is heating up of late, notching an assist in the two most recent contests to extend his point total to nine (three goals, six assists) in his last 10 games.

ABOUT THE STARS: Captain Jamie Benn set up a pair of tallies on Thursday to push his postseason point total to a team-leading 14 (five goals, nine assists) and was honored the following day as a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, which is presented to the NHL's "Most Outstanding Player" as voted by players. While Benn has been consistent throughout the playoffs, Patrick Sharp recorded his first two points of the series on Thursday with his club's first power-play goal versus the Blues before assisting on Cody Eakin's overtime tally.Tyler Seguin (Achilles) skated for the fifth straight day on Friday, but Ruff admitted that the electric forward is "not ready to play."

The Washington Capitals don't need to be reminded that a team can rally from a 3-1 deficit to win a series - after all, they were on the wrong side of history last year. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Capitals look to stave off elimination on Saturday when they host the Metropolitan Division-rival Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

"We were in a reverse situation last year where, Game 5, you know, we had a team basically pretty well down and out," Washington coach Barry Trotz said after his team squandered a 3-1 series advantage and succumbed to the New York Rangers. "(Captain Ryan McDonagh) threw a puck to the net and it hits one of our defensemen, goes in, and they end up winning in overtime and that sort of changed it." While the Capitals have overcome a 3-1 series deficit on two occasions (1989, 2009), the Penguins have seen the bottom fall out in that scenario three times - with the Rangers accomplishing the feat most recently in 2014. Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang will do his best to make sure history doesn't repeat itself when he returns from a one-game suspension to play in Saturday's tilt.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, TVAS

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: The line of Nick Bonino (one goal, three assists), Carl Hagelin (two goals, two assists) and Phil Kessel (two assists) have stepped it up a notch with captain Sidney Crosby (one assist) and fellow superstar Evgeni Malkin (one goal, one assist) struggling to find their offense in this series. "I think we try to push each other," Hagelin told reporters. "We have a good mix on the line. (Bonino) is an extremely smart player, picking up passes in the middle and winning battles down low. We know Phil has a rip of a shot and is an extremely great skater ... I'm just trying to be out there to find pucks, use my speed." Bonino is tied with Crosby (three goals, six assists) and Malkin (three goals, six assists) for the team lead with nine points while Kessel's eight points match Patric Hornqvist, who scored his club-best fifth goal 2:34 into overtime to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 win on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Captain Alex Ovechkin was reunited with countryman Evgeny Kutznetsov and T.J. Oshie on the top line during Friday's practice and Marcus Johansson joined Nicklas Backstrom and Andre Burakovsky on the second line. "Using the other side of your brain once in a while when you're with someone different in the lineup," Trotz told the Washington Post of the line changes. The three-time Hart Trophy-winning Ovechkin recorded 16 points in the 12 contests he was paired with Kuznetsov, who has been limited to just two points (one goal, one assist) and is a minus-4 in the playoffs.

              2. Washington C Mike Richards (flu) is expected to play in Game 5, Trotz told reporters on Friday.

The San Jose Sharks need to have short memories as they return home to face the Nashville Predators on Saturday night in Game 5 of their Western Conference second-round series. The Sharks were inches from taking a commanding 3-1 series lead over Nashville in Thursday's Game 4, only to have an apparent goal waved off before the Predators prevailed 4-3 in three overtimes.

"That rule has been as clear as mud to every coach in the league all year, so why should it be different now?" San Jose coach Peter DeBoer vented to reporters after captain Joe Pavelski's overtime goal was negated due to goaltender interference. The Sharks owned the league's best road record, but dropped both games in Nashville to turn it into a best-of-three series. Mike Fisher delivered the game-winning goal to end Thurday's marathon for the Predators, who won three times in Anaheim in the first round. "To win a game like that is big," Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. "If you think about the other scenario, you're 3-1 the other way. This ties it up 2-2; it shortens the series. Our guys played like champs (on Thursday)."

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: The bold move by Laviolette to scratch veteran Mike Ribeiro in Game 3 and elevate Fisher to a line with Colin Wilson and James Neal has paid huge dividends for Nashville, as the unit combined for all four goals in Thursday's victory - including Neal's tying tally with just over four minutes left in regulation. Wilson continued his postseason heroics with another tally, giving him three goals and four assists during a five-game point streak after scoring only six times during the regular season. Pekka Rinne continues to be immense in net for the Predators, turning aside 44 shots Thursday and surrendering only six goals in the past three contests.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Lost in the hullabaloo over Pavelski's non-goal was another superlative performance by defenseman Brent Burns, who scored a pair of goals in Game 4 and has registered multiple points in five of the nine postseason contests. Logan Couture was denied a goal on a highlight-reel move, but he still collected a pair of assists to boost his point total to nine over the past five games. “It’s just fun hockey,” Couture said. “If you’re not having a great time out there playing in overtime, you’re doing the wrong thing. It was a blast."

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Wilson has 10 postseason goals for Nashville, second behind captain Shea Weber in franchise history.

                  2. Sharks C Joe Thornton is tied with Patrik Elias for fourth place among active players with 80 assists in the playoffs.

                  3. Winning the longest game in franchise history lifted Nashville's record to 4-10 versus San Jose in the postseason.

                  PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Predators 2
