NHL notebook: Wild signs D Seeler
    By The Sports Xchange

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Nick Seeler on Saturday to a two-year, entry-level contract starting with the 2016-17 season.
Seeler, 22, collected 10 assists in 36 games during his junior season at the University of Minnesota and led the team with a plus-21 rating, 43 penalty minutes and 91 blocked shots. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound native of Eden Prairie, Minn., was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. He redshirted for the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules after playing two seasons at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Seeler spent the 2011-12 season playing for Muskegon and Des Moines in the United States Hockey League and totaled 28 points (four goals, 24 assists) in 56 games. He was selected by Minnesota in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL draft.

---The Montreal Canadiens agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Tom Parisi on a two-year, two-way contract for the next two seasons.
Parisi, 22, played 38 games with the Providence College Friars in 2015-16, recording 16 points (one goal, 15 assists). The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder displayed a plus-12 differential and served 24 penalty minutes.
Since making his college debut in 2012-13, Parisi appeared in 144 regular-season games with Providence College, contributing 55 points (12 goals, 43 assists) and 96 penalty minutes.

---The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled defenseman Slater Koekkoek and forward Joel Vermin from the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.
Koekkoek has five goals and 10 assists with 24 penalty minutes in 55 games with the Crunch this season. He has appeared in six games with the Lightning this season, notching one assist.
Vermin also has an assist in six games with the Lightning this season. In 29 games with the Crunch, he has six goals and 11 assists.

---The Calgary Flames assigned defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon to the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League.
Wotherspoon, 23, has played in 11 games for the Flames this season with one assist. He has skated in 45 games for Stockton, recording six assists and 14 penalty minutes.
Wotherspoon was Calgary's second-round pick (57th overall) in the 2011 NHL draft.

---Defenseman Brenden Kitchon of the Winnipeg Jets was reassigned to Manitoba of the American Hockey League.
Kichton was called up from the Moose on Friday on an emergency basis. He has played 62 games for the Moose this season, leading the team with 34 points on nine goals and 25 assists, and has 36 penalty minutes.
Kichton has yet to play in his first NHL game.

Preview: Devils (36-31) at Hurricanes (32-28)

    Date: March 27, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

The New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes are in virtually identical situations in the Eastern Conference playoff race, needing points with seven games left.

The Devils' push has gone better lately, and they seek their sixth win in nine contests Sunday in Raleigh.

New Jersey (36-31-8) has only one team between it and Philadelphia, which occupies the East's final wild-card spot, while Carolina (32-28-15) lurks just behind the Devils in the standings.

While New Jersey is 5-2-1 in its past eight games, the Hurricanes dropped to 1-2-4 in their last seven after a 4-3 overtime defeat to the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Carolina couldn't hold on to a second-period lead while moving one shy of matching its team-record of 16 defeats via overtime or shootouts set in 2011-12. The franchise also registered 16 or more ties in five other seasons.

"We're in games. We're right there," said forward Jordan Staal, whose team has earned at least one point in nine of its 11 contests this month. "Unfortunate endings. I thought we battled pretty hard, besides the first period. ... Just didn't come up with the two points."

The Devils also earned one point in their latest game, falling 1-0 in overtime to league-leading Washington on Friday. They were coming off a 3-0 shutout against Pittsburgh the day before, and John Carlson ruined Scott Wedgewood's attempt at back-to-back blankings in his third NHL start.

"All points are valuable. It's disappointing not to get the second one. It's tough to get points this time of year so you'll take what you can get," forward Kyle Palmieri said.

Wedgewood was called up last Sunday due to No. 1 goaltender Cory Schneider's knee injury. Coach John Hynes said Schneider is not expected to return until next week at the earliest.

"He's played great since he got here," Palmieri said of Wedgewood. '"Hopefully he can keep that going. It makes it a lot harder on other teams. They come in and see that he's only had three NHL games and they think it's going to be point night. He goes out and surprises them."

New Jersey has split its four games with Carolina this season, and each team is 1-1-0 on visiting ice. The Hurricanes are 1-3-1 in their last five at home and have given up a combined 19 goals in those games.

The Devils allowed 13 in back-to-back road losses before beating Pittsburgh.

"Against them, it's always a tight checking game. They do a pretty good job of clogging up the neutral zone," Carolina forward Jeff Skinner said. "We've got to try to make plays."

New Jersey forward Adam Henrique scored in the victory over the Penguins and has four of his career-high 27 goals in the past five games. He has eight goals in his last 12 versus Carolina.

Hurricanes forward Chris Terry has three goals and two assists in a career-high five-game point streak but hasn't recorded one in his last four matchups against New Jersey.

Preview: Penguins (41-25) at Rangers (43-24)

      Date: March 27, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The New York Rangers have ousted the Pittsburgh Penguins from the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Owning home-ice advantage would improve their chances at doing it again.

The Rangers attempt to separate themselves further from the injury-riddled Penguins in the race for second place in the Metropolitan Division in this potential first-round playoff preview Sunday night.

New York (43-24-8) has won five of the last seven matchups with Pittsburgh at Madison Square Garden, including two of three while winning last season's first-round postseason series in five games. However, the Rangers fell 5-3 in the most recent matchup at MSG on March 13.

Another playoff series is possible with the Rangers leading the third-place Penguins by four points with seven games remaining.

Pittsburgh is also trying to hold off the New York Islanders, who are one point back and in the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Penguins (41-25-8) continued their high-octane offense Saturday with a 7-2 rout of Detroit, scoring four times in the second period. They are averaging 3.75 goals during a 7-1-0 surge.

Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino set career highs with five points apiece. Bonino's effort was a major surprise since he matched his production from the previous 13 games, despite being a game-time decision with an upper-body injury.

The scoring outburst also came with star center Evgeni Malkin sidelined for at least four more weeks with an arm injury.

"He had a terrific game for us," coach Mike Sullivan said of Bonino on the team's official website. "When we're in the situation we're in right now with some of the injuries that we have, we need guys to step up at key times and he certainly did."

Sullivan has already ruled out defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who suffered an upper-body injury while being checked Saturday. It's unknown if Chris Kunitz will also be out with an upper-body injury that forced him to leave in the second period.

      "We'll re-evaluate (Kunitz) and he'll be a game-time decision," Sullivan said.

One player whose status isn't in question is Sidney Crosby, who has 21 points over the last 14 games. He has three goals and two assists in his last three visits to MSG.

Conor Sheary unexpectedly scored twice at New York this month, but those are the rookie forward's only points over his last 13 games.

Chris Kreider has a goal in each of the last two meetings with the Penguins. He had no points in five games before scoring twice and assisting on Derick Brassard's tally in Saturday's 5-2 win at Montreal.

"We're trying to find chemistry between lines right now," said Brassard, who added two assists. "Chris is a big part of our team. To see him score two goals like that and be involved in the game, that's something our team is pretty excited about.

"Hopefully it's going to give him some confidence. I really like our line."

Brassard has 23 points in his last 25 games against Pittsburgh, including 13 in 12 at MSG. He has one point in each of the past seven matchups there.

The Rangers are expected to have Henrik Lundqvist in net after backup Antti Raanta made 24 saves against the Canadiens.

Lundqvist is 21-5-2 with a 2.17 goals-against average at home. He owns a 1.95 GAA while winning five of his last seven there against the Penguins, including four playoff matchups.

He stopped 28 of 32 shots against them earlier this month.

Preview: Blackhawks (43-25) at Canucks (27-34)

        Date: March 27, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Needing just one point to assure themselves of an eighth straight trip to the playoffs, the Chicago Blackhawks are likely more concerned with avoiding falling into a wild-card spot.

The Blackhawks look to continue turning around their rough stretch by capitalizing on their final meeting with the collapsing Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night.

Chicago (43-25-7) is 13 points clear of ninth-place Colorado and the postseason cutoff with seven games remaining. Since the Blackhawks hold the tiebreaker with the Avalanche, one point will be enough to put them back in the playoffs.

Chicago is also trying to maintain its hold on third place in the Central Division, sitting just two points ahead of Nashville, which occupies the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

This wasn't a concern as recently as three weeks ago when the Blackhawks were vying for the top spot in the conference, but a 1-4-2 stretch all but ended those hopes.

They started to turn things around Saturday, beating Calgary 4-1 in the opener of this four-game trip with three coming against teams outside of the playoff race.

'We've lost a ton of ground here and trying to get a win was the most important thing,' coach Joel Quenneville said. 'We've still got to be better, but we found a way to win, which was nice.'

That sense of urgency isn't lost on Andrew Ladd, who had two goals and one assist Saturday to give him eight points in 12 games since being re-acquired in a trade with Winnipeg last month.

'We know where we're at in terms of the standings,' Ladd said. 'Nashville's right on our heels and St. Louis is pulling away. We understand this road trip is a big road trip for us.'

Chicago beat the Canucks 4-0 at home on Dec. 13 behind 30 saves from Corey Crawford, who isn't on this trip due to an upper-body injury. Scott Darling is 2-2-1 with a 2.28 goals-against average during a stretch of five straight starts.

He made 31 saves against the Flames and Quenneville could give him the nod on consecutive days for the first time.

Darling could be poised for another impressive performance since the Canucks (27-34-13) are on the verge of their first eight-game losing streak since January 2009. They've been outscored 21-5 over their last seven games (0-6-1) and have been shutout in four of the last five.

Vancouver mustered a season-low 15 shots in Friday's 4-0 loss at St. Louis. Frustration seems to be mounting for coach Willie Desjardins, who has a roster that includes 10 players 23 years old and younger.

"We are young for sure ... Sure you learn from it, but there's a point where you want to quit learning and you want to just play. You want to do it," he said.

Daniel Sedin leads the Canucks with 27 goals, his highest total since netting 30 in 2011-12, but he's only scored once during the slide.

He had a hat trick and an assist against the Blackhawks in November, giving him 69 points in 73 career matchups - including playoffs.

Henrik Sedin averages a point in 37 lifetime home meetings with Chicago after tallying a career-high five in a 6-3 victory Nov. 21.

          Grand Salami - March

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

                  Preview: New Jersey at Carolina
When: 5:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 27, 2016
Where: PNC Arena, Raleigh, North Carolina
A pair of teams that might have to run the table in order to reach the postseason will clash when the Carolina Hurricanes host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. New Jersey holds a one-point lead over the Hurricanes for 10th place in the Eastern Conference but faces an uphill climb to make the playoffs as it trails Philadelphia by five for the second wild-card spot with seven games remaining.
Despite the continued brilliance of rookie goaltender Scott Wedgewood, the Devils absorbed a hard-luck 1-0 overtime loss to NHL-leading Washington on Friday to fall to 5-2-1 over their last eight games. “All points are valuable,” New Jersey forward Kyle Palmieri said. “I have to say it’s disappointing not to get the second one, but it’s tough to get points this time of year, so you’ll take whatever you can get.” The Hurricanes have failed to make the playoffs in each of the last six seasons, and their inability to win close games will be the reason should they come up short again. Carolina has dropped six of its last seven (1-2-4) while nine of its past 10 games have been decided by one goal – a span in which it is 3-2-5.
TV: 5 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), FSN Carolinas
ABOUT THE DEVILS (36-31-8): With Cory Schneider sidelined by injury and backup Keith Kinkaid slumping, New Jersey turned to Wedgewood and has been rewarded beyond its wildest dreams. Wedgewood has turned aside 91-of-93 shots in his first three NHL starts, including a 39-save performance in a shutout at Pittsburgh on Thursday. “When you see him play, there’s a poise in the net,” coach John Hynes said. “He doesn’t overreact to shots or he doesn’t overreact to situations. You can see that and you can see his rebound control is very good.”
ABOUT THE HURRICANES (32-28-15): Carolina was able to dig out of a two-goal hole at Columbus on Thursday by scoring three times in a 98-second span of the third period and also rallied from two goals down with three second-period tallies before enduring a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday. Chris Terry notched an assist Saturday to extend his point streak to a career-high five games. The Hurricanes have come up empty on all 13 power-play chances over their last six games, but they have successfully killed 19 straight penalties in the last seven contests.
                  OVERTIME
                  1. Devils C Adam Henrique has scored five times in his last five games overall and netted 10 goals in 18 contests against Carolina.
                  2. Hurricanes F Jeff Skinner, who scored his 26th goal Saturday, has netted 10 tallies in 22 games versus New Jersey.
                  3. The Devils are 9-2 in games decided in overtime.
                  PREDICTION: Devils 3, Hurricanes 2

The Pittsburgh Penguins are making a spirited late-season run in an attempt to secure home ice in the first round of the playoffs, but standing in the way are the resurgent New York Rangers. Winners of seven of their last eight games, the Penguins visit New York on Sunday for a showdown between two teams battling for second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Pittsburgh trails the Rangers by four points with a game in hand and holds a one-point advantage over the fourth-place New York Islanders after erupting for a season-high goal total in a 7-2 drubbing at Detroit on Saturday. Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel each recorded career-high five-point performances for the Penguins, who won two of the previous three meetings with the Rangers this season – including a 5-3 victory at Madison Square Garden on March 13. The Rangers their winning streak to three games with a 5-2 victory at nemesis Montreal on Saturday, matching their goal total from the previous 11 visits to the Bell Centre. The Rangers have scored 14 goals in their last three games, including five on the power play.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (41-25-8): Pittsburgh suddenly is dealing with a revolving door along the blue line, losing defenseman Olli Maatta on a week-to-week basis due to a lower-body injury sustained in Thursday’s loss to New Jersey and Brian Dumoulin to an upper-body ailment in Saturday’s victory. Dumoulin, who has played in all 74 games, has been ruled out for Sunday, but blue-liner Ben Lovejoy was back in the lineup Saturday following a 16-game absence. The injuries extend beyond the blue line – forward Chris Kunitz (upper body) is listed as a game-time decision for Sunday’s game.
ABOUT THE RANGERS (43-24-8): Coach Alain Vigneault shuffled his lines at Friday’s practice, moving Derick Brassard between Rick Nash and Chris Kreider, and it paid off handsomely against the Canadiens. Kreider scored a pair of goals while Brassard netted one tally and set up two others to move into a tie with Mats Zuccarello for the team lead with 57 points. Brassard, who needs three points to match his career high established last season, has notched five goals and six assists in his last 10 games overall and has six tallies and 17 points in 17 career meetings with Pittsburgh.

                      Preview: Chicago at Vancouver
When: 8:00 PM ET, Sunday, March 27, 2016
Where: Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia
The Chicago Blackhawks attempt to strengthen their hold on third place in the Central Division when they continue their four-game road trip Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks. Chicago began its trek with Saturday’s 4-1 triumph at Calgary to remain two points ahead of surging Nashville, which has won three games in a row and seven of its last 10 to all but lock up the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
The Blackhawks are hoping their win over the Flames is the beginning of their turnaround, as the reigning Stanley Cup champions had lost six of their previous seven contests (1-4-2) to fall six points behind Central co-leaders Dallas and St. Louis. Vancouver finds itself in the basement of the Western Conference thanks to a slide that reached seven games (0-6-1) with Friday’s 4-0 setback at St. Louis. The Canucks are in desperate need of offense, as they have been shut out in four of their last five contests after being blanked only five times prior to their skid. Vancouver split its first two meetings of the season with the Blackhawks, scoring a season-high six goals in a home victory Nov. 21 before being kept off the scoreboard in Chicago on Dec. 13.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (43-25-7): Andrew Ladd is excelling during his second stint with Chicago, recording five goals and three assists in 12 games since being re-acquired from Winnipeg. The 30-year-old, who was selected fourth overall by Carolina in the 2004 draft, won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006 and again with the Blackhawks four years later. Marcus Kruger received 13 minutes, 38 seconds of ice time Saturday in his first game since Dec. 17 because of a wrist injury.
ABOUT THE CANUCKS (27-34-13): Captain Henrik Sedin has struggled offensively as much as anyone on the team, recording a goal and four assists during his last 13 games after registering a four-point performance — all assists — Feb. 21 against Colorado. The 35-year-old Swede’s most recent point — an assist at Nashville on Thursday — was the 966th of his career, moving him past Maurice Richard for 88th place on the all-time list. Vancouver has four players in the bottom seven of the NHL in plus/minus rating, with Bo Horvat dead last at minus-35 and Radim Vrbata just ahead of him at minus-30.

                      2. Chicago RW Andrew Shaw has scored a goal in each of his last three games after going 11 contests without one.
                      3. Vancouver has scored a total of five goals during its slide and 169 overall this season, tying New Jersey for fewest in the league.
