NHL notebook: Phaneuf goes to Senators in nine-player deal
    By The Sports Xchange

Toronto and Ottawa completed a nine-player swap on Tuesday that sent defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Maple Leafs to the Senators.
In exchange for Phaneuf, the Maple Leafs will receive forwards Milan Michalek, Colin Greening and Tobias Lindberg, defenseman Jared Cowen and a 2017 second-round draft pick.
The Senators also are adding defenseman Cody Donaghey and forwards Casey Bailey, Matt Frattin and Ryan Rupert.
Phaneuf, 30, had skated in 423 games with the Maple Leafs through parts of seven seasons, registering 196 points (45 goals and 151 assists) and 598 penalty minutes. He has three goals and 24 points assists in 51 games this season.

---Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin won't return until at least next week while continuing to recover from an undisclosed lower-body injury.
Coach Mike Sullivan said Malkin will miss Wednesday night's game against the New York Rangers and weekend road games against the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers. Malkin, a four-time All-Star, was injured Feb. 2 in a 6-5 win over the Ottawa Senators and he has missed the Penguins' last three games.
In 49 games this season, Malkin has 23 goals and 26 assists.

---Arizona recalled forward Tyler Gaudet from the Coyotes' AHL Springfield affiliate.
The 22-year-old Gaudet has averaged 12:37 of ice time and registered an assist in five games with the Coyotes this season.
Gaudet signed with the Coyotes as a free agent on Nov. 4, 2013.

---A lower-body injury has sidelined Montreal defenseman Jeff Petry, who was not in the lineup when the Canadiens faced Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.
Petry is tied with P.K. Subban for the lead in defenseman goals with five.
Petry sat out the last half of the third period of the Canadiens' win over Carolina on Sunday, which could be related to the injury in question.

---The Edmonton Oilers assigned defenseman Griffin Reinhart to Bakersfield of the American Hockey League.
The 22-year-old Reinhart has one assist and 16 penalty minutes in 15 games for the Oilers this season. In 17 games with Bakersfield this season, Reinhart has logged one goal, five assists and 12 penalty minutes.

Preview: Senators (25-23) at Red Wings (27-18)

    Date: February 10, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Ottawa Senators have played better defensively in the last two games and hope that continues with the acquisition of a veteran blueliner ahead of the trade deadline.

Dion Phaneuf is expected to debut for the visiting Senators as they try for a third consecutive victory Wednesday night against the Detroit Red Wings.

Though currently out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa (25-23-6) has reason to feel good with back-to-back wins following a 1-5-0 stretch. The Senators held a players' meeting after their third straight defeat, 7-2 to Edmonton at home Thursday, then responded by outscoring Toronto and Tampa Bay 11-2.

'You're at the point in your schedule and in the season where there's no margin for error here,' coach Dave Cameron said.

Ottawa hasn't won three straight since a four-game run Nov. 19-25, but the outspoken Phaneuf appears ready to help. He was acquired Tuesday from Toronto for defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Milan Michalek, Colin Greening, Tobias Lindberg and a second-round 2017 pick. Ottawa also will receive forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey and Ryan Rupert, and defensive prospect Cody Donaghey.

"From our point of view it's a trade that will give us a little more security on the back end," Senators general manager Bryan Murray said. "(Phaneuf is) a real good person. He competes. He wants to win ... We don't expect him to be a savior. We expect him to be the player he is."

Despite the presence of two-time Norris Trophy winner and leading scorer Erik Karlsson, the Senators rank near the bottom of the league allowing 3.07 goals per game and are last while killing off 74.6 percent of their penalties. Though the 11-year veteran is a minus-15 since the start of last season, Phaneuf's experience provides an upgrade and another possible mentor for talented young defenseman Cody Ceci.

A three-time All-Star, Phaneuf has 424 career points and was tied for the Maple Leafs' lead with 21 assists this season. In a move that should also allow both clubs to shed some salary, the 30-year-old former Toronto captain has five years left on a contract that draws a salary-cap hit of $7 million.

"We're excited to have him," injured forward Clarke MacArthur, who played with Phaneuf in Toronto, told the Senators' official Twitter feed.

The Senators look to continue their defensive improvement after killing all seven penalties in two contests to follow a three-game stretch in which their opponents went 6 for 10 on the power play. Craig Anderson posted a 5.63 goals-against average during a three-game skid, but has stopped 57 of 59 shots in the last two.

"If you let your foot off the pedal and get back on your heels, you put your confidence in jeopardy again because your play will be in jeopardy," Cameron told the NHL's official website. "It's just a matter of sticking to it now."

Mark Stone, meanwhile, has five goals and three assists in four games after going without a point in the previous eight.

'Once you get that little confidence, that little swagger back you feel comfortable every night,' said Stone, who had two goals and an assist in Monday's 5-1 rout of Tampa Bay.

Bobby Ryan had a goal and an assist in the Senators' 3-1 win at Detroit on Oct. 30, but the Red Wings (27-18-8) totaled nine goals to win the next two at Ottawa.

Looking to improve its playoff position in the East, Detroit has followed a season-worst 0-4-1 home slide by outscoring the New York Islanders and Florida 8-1 to win the last two at Joe Louis.

'Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come,' said Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill, whose team last won three straight at home during a four-game run Dec. 1-10.

Pavel Datsyuk has four points in two games after scoring twice in Monday's 3-0 victory over the Panthers.

Petr Mrazek, who made 23 saves for his second shutout in five starts, has won nine of 12 and owns a 1.18 GAA with a .955 save percentage in his last 11. He stopped 33 shots during a 5-3 victory at Ottawa on Halloween.

Teammate Henrik Zetterberg had two assists Monday, and has two with a goal against Ottawa this season.

Stone has a goal and three assists against the Red Wings in 2015-16.

Anderson, however, has a 3.93 ERA during an 0-2-2 slump against Detroit.

Preview: Rangers (30-18) at Penguins (27-18)

      Date: February 10, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers are winning without their captain and most established scorer, mainly because their most important player has been in top form.

Henrik Lundqvist's recent accomplishments still pale in comparison to those of Sidney Crosby, who'll attempt to extend his career-best goal streak to eight games and help the Pittsburgh Penguins stop the Rangers' surge Wednesday night.

Both clubs have endured ups and downs since last facing off in the 2015 Eastern Conference quarterfinals, when Lundqvist yielded one goal in all four wins as the Rangers took the series in five. The standout goaltender has been just as good of late, allowing five goals as New York (30-18-5) has won three straight for its longest streak since a nine-game run Oct. 25-Nov. 15.

Lundqvist carried a shutout into the final minutes and recorded 27 saves in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over New Jersey as the Rangers overcame the absences of Ryan McDonagh and Rick Nash. McDonagh is out indefinitely with a concussion sustained from a punch from Philadelphia's Wayne Simmonds on Saturday, while Nash is expected to miss a seventh straight game with a leg bruise.

"We are all rallying around everyone here, trying to put a few wins together," defenseman Dan Girardi said. "It feels good.'

Lundqvist's next challenge figures to be the toughest, as Pittsburgh (27-18-7) has scored a league-high 29 goals since Jan. 20 while winning six of seven to climb back into playoff position.

The Penguins have won two straight minus Evgeni Malkin, out again Wednesday with a lower-body injury. Crosby has more than made up for that loss during a six-game tear in which he's amassed 10 goals and six assists.

Crosby broke his previous career high of six straight with a goal by scoring twice and notching two assists as the Penguins halted Anaheim's six-game win streak with Tuesday's 6-2 rout. The star center's 18 goals and 31 points in 19 games since Dec. 26 are the most in the NHL.

'His game is at another level right now,' coach Mike Sullivan said. 'He's a big reason we continue to gain traction in the standings.'

Among the others contributing during Pittsburgh's scoring binge are Kris Letang, who has eight goals and 24 points over a 15-game stretch, and Chris Kunitz with seven points in four games since returning from a lower-body injury.

The Penguins haven't generated much offense lately against Lundqvist, who posted a 1.60 goals-against average in nine 2014-15 matchups including the playoffs. New York went 3-0-1 against Pittsburgh during the 2014-15 regular season.

J.T. Miller has helped offset Nash's loss by recording eight goals in eight games, including the game-winner in the third period against New Jersey.

'Guys are playing really well and scoring big goals at the right time, and as a group, I feel like we are doing a lot of good things," said Lundqvist, who has won eight of his last 11 starts with a 1.88 GAA.

The Rangers have made up for abysmal special-teams play with a plus-30 goal differential at even strength, second to Washington for the league's best mark. They're near the bottom in penalty killing and have received little production from a power play that's 2 for 49 over the last 17 games and 0 for 14 in the past four.

Pittsburgh's power play has converted 33.3 percent of its chances during a six-game home winning streak and is third in the NHL at 25.3 percent since Sullivan replaced Mike Johnston on Dec. 12.

Preview: Canucks (21-20) at Coyotes (24-22)

        Date: February 10, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

Arizona's losing streak has everything to do with being unable to get it together in the defensive zone. Vancouver's just came to an end as it finally managed multiple goals in a game.

The Canucks will try to keep trending in the right direction in Wednesday night's visit to Arizona, while the Coyotes need to start by holding a team under five goals.

After Friday's 5-2 loss in Anaheim, the Coyotes (24-22-6) have given up 21 goals over a 0-3-1 span. What's worse is it's their second four-game losing streak on a 2-6-2 slide that's seen a once-promising season take a serious hit.

The Coyotes have taken 27 penalties on the current losing streak and gone 17 of 22 on the penalty kill, and they've also allowed an average of 37.6 shots per game in the last five.

"We've got to recognize that we've got to bear down," Connor Murphy told the team's official website. "Bad penalties, mental lapses and soft plays â?¦ we have to take those things out of our games, and we've got to grow and be more of a consistent and stable group. If we want to win we're going to have to do that the whole game."

It's overshadowed some continued offensive production from Shane Doan. The veteran has scored in consecutive games and is a point from matching Dale Hawerchuk for the franchise's all-time points lead of 929. He already owns the goals record of 387, a department in which he's seen a resurgence this season with a team-high 19 after managing 14 in 79 games a season ago. Another would secure his 13th 20-goal season.

"After last season, I wanted to answer some personal questions for sure," said Doan, who scored twice in a 3-2 win in Vancouver on Jan. 4. "I thought I was better than that, and this year I've been able to contribute. ... This year was a different approach where I'm going to enjoy playing hockey. I'm playing in the NHL still, and I'm loving every minute of it."

Vancouver (21-20-12) finally had some fun itself in Tuesday's 3-1 win in Colorado, drawing even with Arizona in the Pacific Division standings with 54 points after allowing the Coyotes to open a five-point gap under a month ago.

The Canucks weren't looking capable of tracking down anyone over their 0-3-1 span on which they'd been limited to a goal in three straight games prior to Tuesday.

"We've been playing decent hockey the last three or four games, but we didn't find a way to win," Luca Sbisa told the team's official website. "Tonight we did."

Bo Horvat's goal gave him 15 points in his last 14 games, but the Canucks need their three points leaders to come around. Goals and points leader Daniel Sedin has been limited to an assist in his last five games, Henrik Sedin is without a point in his last five and Jannik Hansen has been held off the score sheet in four straight.

Jacob Markstrom played for Vancouver on Tuesday, so Ryan Miller should start this game. Miller hasn't won in his last five games, but the Canucks have totaled three goals in his last three. He's 8-1-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average all-time against the Coyotes, including 5-0-0 with 1.39 mark in Arizona.

Louis Domingue figures to be back in goal for the Coyotes after Anders Lindback faced the Ducks. Domingue has given up five goals in three straight losses with a 6.10 GAA. He made 35 saves in the win over the Canucks last month.

          Grand Salami - February

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

              Preview: Ottawa at Detroit
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, February 10, 2016
Where: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan
After seeing their offense erupt in the last two games, the Ottawa Senators addressed their defense in a big way on Tuesday by acquiring veteran Dion Phaneuf in a nine-player deal with provincial rival Toronto. The Senators hope to have the three-time All-Star in the lineup when they vie for their third straight victory on Wednesday against the host Detroit Red Wings.
“From our point of view, it’s a trade that will give us a little more security on the back end,” Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray said. “(Phaneuf is) a real good person. He competes. He wants to win … We don’t expect him to be a savior. We expect him to be the player he is.” Detroit’s Petr Mrazek reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in his career after turning aside all 23 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over Florida on Monday. The 23-year-old, who has recorded two shutouts in his last five starts, made 33 saves in the Red Wings’ 5-3 win in Canada’s capital on Oct. 31.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, RSN (Ottawa), FSN Detroit
ABOUT THE SENATORS (25-23-6): Mired in respective eight-game goal droughts, Mark Stone and Curtis Lazar opted to pay it forward by handing $50 to homeless men – and the two received immediate dividends on the ice. Stone recorded two goals and set up another in Ottawa’s 5-1 win over Tampa Bay on Monday, bringing his total to five tallies and three assists since his generous gesture. While Stone has scored in four straight games to match his career high goal-scoring streak from April 2-7, 2015, Lazar tallied twice in the Senators’ 6-1 rout of the Maple Leafs on Saturday.
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (27-18-8): Pavel Datsyuk has turned in back-to-back two-point performances after being limited to just one assist during a five-game stretch. The 37-year-old Russian recorded his first multi-goal performance versus the Panthers with new linemate Henrik Zetterberg setting up both tallies. Zetterberg collected a goal and two assists in three meetings with Ottawa this season and has 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) in 19 career encounters.
              OVERTIME
              1. In addition to Phaneuf, Ottawa received Fs Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey and Ryan Rupert as well as D Cody Donaghey from Toronto for Fs Milan Michalek, Colin Greening, Tobias Lindberg, D Jared Cowen and a second-round pick in the 2017 draft.
              2. Detroit has scored four power-play goals in the last three games after going 1-for-11 in the previous four.
              3. The Senators’ 74.6 percent efficiency on the penalty kill is the worst in the league.

                Preview: NY Rangers at Pittsburgh
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, February 10, 2016
Where: Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Captain Sidney Crosby will attempt to extend his career-high goal streak to an impressive eight games on Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Metropolitan Division-rival New York Rangers. Crosby, who has scored 12 goals and set up 10 others during his 11-game point streak, recorded his second four-point performance in the last four contests in a 6-2 victory over Anaheim on Monday.
“His game is at another level right now,” coach Mike Sullivan said of Crosby, who has scored at least one goal in nine straight games at Consol Energy Center. The run is the second-longest in franchise history, trailing only Mario Lemieux’s 11-game stretch from Jan. 5-Feb. 23, 1996. While the Penguins have emerged victorious in two in a row and six of their last seven with their captain on a torrid stretch, the Rangers extended their winning streak to three games without the services of Ryan McDonagh. New York’s captain is out indefinitely with a concussion sustained in the team’s 3-2 shootout win over Philadelphia on Saturday.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports
ABOUT THE RANGERS (30-18-5): Like Crosby, J.T. Miller has taken his team on his back by scoring his ninth goal in 10 games to lift New York to a 2-1 victory over New Jersey on Monday. The offensive contributions are a welcome addition for the Rangers, who will see top-line forward Rick Nash (left leg bone bruise) miss his seventh straight game on Wednesday. According to NorthJersey.com, Nash told coach Alain Vigneault that he was “feeling better,” although doctors want the veteran to remain off the ice for “a couple of more days.”
ABOUT THE PENGUINS (27-18-7): Crosby isn’t the only one on a tear as defenseman Kris Letang has collected eight goals and 16 assists over his last 15 games. Not to be outdone is Chris Kunitz, who returned from a lower-body injury to record seven points (two goals, five assists) in four contests and is a plus-12 in his last nine. Like the Rangers, the Penguins are also dealing with injuries as standout Evgeni Malkin – sidelined for three games already – has been ruled out for the remainder of the week with a lower-body ailment.
                OVERTIME
                1. New York G Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start his ninth straight game and 20th in 21 outings on Wednesday, but is just 9-11-2 with a 2.56 goals-against average on the road this season.
                2. While Lundqvist has struggled on the road, Penguins G Marc-Andre Fleury is 7-0-1 in his last eight home games and 14-5-2 in the Steel City this season.
                3. Pittsburgh is 8-0-2 in its last 10 contests at Consol Energy Center.
                PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Rangers 2

                  Preview: Vancouver at Arizona
When: 9:30 PM ET, Wednesday, February 10, 2016
Where: Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona
The Arizona Coyotes attempt to end their four-game losing streak when they host the Pacific Division-rival Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. Arizona has been held to two goals three times during its slide, including Friday’s 5-2 setback at Anaheim, and is tied with Vancouver for 10th in the Western Conference – four points behind eighth-place Colorado and two behind Minnesota.
The Coyotes would love to see Mikkel Boedker break out of his scoring funk as the 26-year-old Dane – who is second on the team with 35 points – has recorded one goal in his last 17 contests. Vancouver put an end to its four-game skid Tuesday with a 3-1 triumph at Colorado. Bo Horvat has been a key offensive contributor of late, recording at least one point in 11 of his last 14 games after notching a goal and an assist versus the Avalanche. Vancouver and Arizona split the first two contests of their four-game season series, with each team posting a one-goal victory on the road.
TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Vancouver), FSN Arizona Plus
ABOUT THE CANUCKS (21-20-12): Daniel Sedin leads the team with 21 goals but has scored only two in his last 10 games. Horvat, who has collected eight goals and seven assists during his hot streak, is three tallies away from matching the 13 he scored as a rookie last season. Ryan Miller is expected to be in net for Vancouver on Wednesday after fellow G Jacob Markstrom posted the victory over Colorado in his first start since Jan. 21.
ABOUT THE COYOTES (24-22-6): With Boyd Gordon out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, Arizona recalled fellow center Tyler Gaudet from Springfield of the American Hockey League to help fill the void on faceoffs. The 22-year-old Gaudet, who notched his first career point (assist) in five games earlier this season, has won 55 percent of his draws with the Falcons while Gordon had a 57.3 percent success rate before getting hurt. Captain Shane Doan is two points shy of passing Dale Hawerchuk (929) as the franchise’s all-time leader and one tally away from his 13th career 20-goal season.
