      Preview: Boston at Buffalo
When: 7:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: First Niagara Center, Buffalo, New York
One day after escaping the Atlantic Division basement with an impressive comeback victory over one Original Six team, the Buffalo Sabres attempt to match their longest winning streak of the season Thursday as they host another in the Boston Bruins in the opener of a home-and-home series. Buffalo rallied for three goals in the third period Wednesday to post its second straight victory, a 4-2 road triumph over floundering Montreal.
The Sabres look to top another division rival and equal the three-game run they enjoyed from Nov. 7-12. Boston hopes to avoid a third consecutive defeat and remain in a playoff spot in the tightly contested Eastern Conference. The Bruins occupy the first wild-card position in the East and are two points behind Tampa Bay for second in the Atlantic but one in front of New Jersey, which sits out of the postseason picture. Boston and Buffalo split their first two meetings this season, with each team winning on the road.
TV: 7 p.m. ET; Sportsnet, TVA; NESN (Boston), MSG (Buffalo)
ABOUT THE BRUINS (26-18-6): Jonas Gustavsson will make the trip to Buffalo after being cleared to practice Tuesday but awaits his final test results before being given the green light to return to action. The 31-year-old Swede has not played since Jan. 26 because of an elevated heart rate. Defenseman Adam McQuaid skated Monday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury Jan. 5 but remains out.
ABOUT THE SABRES (21-26-4): Jack Eichel notched an assist Wednesday, giving him points (three goals, five assists) in five of his last six games. The 19-year-old is second in scoring among all NHL rookies with 35 points – 12 behind Chicago’s Artemi Panarin. All-Star Ryan O’Reilly leads the team in goals (17) and points (41), but has gone 10 games without a tally.
      OVERTIME
      1. Sabres D Cody Franson’s two assists Wednesday were his first since Dec. 26 versus the Bruins.
      2. Boston G Malcolm Subban will serve as Tuukka Rask’s backup for the second straight game since being recalled from Providence of the American Hockey League on Monday.
      3. Buffalo LW Matt Moulson enters with a 38-game goal-scoring drought, last tallying Nov. 1.
      PREDICTION: Bruins 4, Sabres 1

        Preview: Minnesota at NY Rangers
When: 7:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
While the New York Rangers have struggled with consistency since their blistering 16-3-2 start to the season, they own an impressive record at home and can build on that success against the skidding Minnesota Wild on Thursday. New York is 5-0-1 in its last six home games to boost its record at Madison Square Garden to 18-5-2.
Rick Nash is expected to miss his fourth straight game due to a bone bruise in his knee for the Rangers, who suffered another key injury in Tuesday’s 3-2 loss at New Jersey. Defenseman Kevin Klein, who missed 11 games in December due to a strained oblique, suffered a fractured right thumb and is out indefinitely. The Wild will stumble into Madison Square Garden with eight losses in nine games (1-7-1) following a 5-3 setback at the New York Islanders on Tuesday. “It’s not like we are playing real well and just getting unlucky,” Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. “Maybe a couple of games we had, but for the most part, we’ve had games and we’ve lost them, and that’s what we have to fix.”
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN North, FSN Wisconsin (Minnesota), MSG2 (New York)
ABOUT THE WILD (23-18-9): Minnesota has scored a total of 14 goals during its nine-game tailspin, and the constant losing is taking a toll on the team’s psyche. “That’s how it’s going right now, we just don’t have that confidence that we did at the beginning of the year,” defenseman Ryan Suter told reporters. “When you have that confidence, you can get away with having a mishap or a couple throughout the game. Now it’s costing us.” All-Star Devan Dubnyk, who sparked Minnesota’s playoff drive last season, was yanked Tuesday after allowing five goals and fell to 0-5-1 in his last six starts.
ABOUT THE RANGERS (27-18-5): New York’s struggling power play failed on all four chances against the Devils to fall to 2-for-39 since the Christmas break while allowing New Jersey to convert on both of its chances with the man advantage. “It’s really frustrating,” captain Ryan McDonagh said. “We need everybody to execute a lot better. It’s costing us too many games. We need to be a lot better in the special teams.” J.T. Miller continued his goal-scoring binge by netting both goals in Tuesday’s loss, giving him seven tallies in seven games to increase his career-best total to 15.
        OVERTIME
        1. Suter will appear in his 800th career game.
        2. Rangers rookie D Dylan McIlrath will take Klein’s place in the lineup.
        3. Wild captain Mikko Koivu scored two goals and set up another in a 5-2 home win over the Rangers on Dec. 17.
        PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Wild 2

          Preview: NY Islanders at Washington
When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, District Of Columbia
The Washington Capitals will have their full complement of players on Thursday when they look to snap a modest two-game skid versus the visiting New York Islanders. Captain Alex Ovechkin (lower body) was serving a mandatory one-game suspension for missing the NHL All-Star Game and Braden Holtby was given the night off on Tuesday in Washington’s 5-2 setback to Florida.
“He’s fresh,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz told Monumental Network of Ovechkin. “We’ll see if he’s totally healthy, but he’ll play (Thursday). He’s zooming around and he’s missing everybody. When you don’t play, you feel like an outsider. He’s in the in group again and he’ll be good.” Ovechkin and Holtby certainly were good in the teams’ first meeting this season, as the former scored a goal and the latter made 34 saves as Washington posted a 4-1 victory over New York on Jan. 7. Brock Nelson scored his club’s lone goal in that contest and has six of his career high-tying 20 in the Islanders’ last six games (4-1-1) – including a tally in the team’s 5-3 win over Minnesota on Tuesday.
          TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TVA, SN360, NHL.TV
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (26-16-6): Coach Jack Capuano was pleased with Tuesday’s 40-save performance by Jean-Francois Berube, noting that the 24-year-old will be an integral part of the club. “I think everybody’s got to realize he is part of the team,” Capuano told Newsday. “We have three goalies. It’s not like he’s an extra goalie. He’s one of the three.” As for whether Berube receives a second straight start or Jaroslav Halak or Thomas Greiss gets the nod on Thursday, well, Capuano isn’t saying.
ABOUT THE CAPITALS (35-9-4): Taylor Chorney did his best to play through an illness on Tuesday, but the defenseman fought a losing battle and exited the contest in the second period. With fellow blue-liner Brooks Orpik on long-term injured reserve, Washington may need to look to the minors for an emergency recall should Chorney be unable to play against New York. “We don’t know if he’s available,” Trotz told the Washington Post. “We might not know until after warm-ups.”
          OVERTIME
          1. Ovechkin has scored 42 points (27 goals, 15 assists) in 38 career meetings with the Islanders.
          2. New York is making its first visit to Verizon Center since losing in Game 7 of the first round of the playoffs last spring.
          3. The Capitals are 7-1-2 in their last 10 meetings with the Islanders.
          PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Islanders 3

            Preview: New Jersey at Toronto
When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario
Mike Babcock is in his first season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he will reach a major milestone Thursday as he becomes the 25th man in NHL history to coach in 1,000 games. It will mark only the 50th game for Babcock as coach of the Maple Leafs, who will host a surging New Jersey Devils squad that has won five of its last six.
“You’re trying to be the best. I want to be the best coach in my generation,” Babcock told reporters while noting that Chicago’s Joel Quenneville and Los Angeles’ Darryl Sutter are making his goal a daunting challenge. Toronto snapped a four-game skid (0-2-2) and won for only the second time in 11 games (2-7-2) with a 4-3 overtime victory at Boston on Tuesday. The Devils held off the New York Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday to inch closer to second place in the Metropolitan Division. “I think it’s easier to not standings-watch when you are winning,” New Jersey All-Star goaltender Cory Schneider said. “When you are losing, you are checking to see how much damage is being done. I think we know the situation.”
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto)
ABOUT THE DEVILS (26-20-5): Rookie Joseph Blandisi made his second goal memorable, beating Henrik Lundqvist just over a minute after the Rangers had forged ahead to set off a boisterous celebration during which he repeatedly pounded the glass. “It was a really exciting game to play in. The atmosphere was unbelievable and I think we were pretty excited to get the two points,” Blandisi said. “It was an unbelievable feeling. It definitely beats my first (goal).” Defenseman John Moore (lower body) is expected back in the line following a three-game absence.
ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (18-22-9): Toronto had tallied only 11 times in its previous 10 games before erasing a two-goal, third-period deficit in Boston on goals by leading scorer Leo Komarov and Nazem Kadri. “.. That was a character win – being able to come back to fight right through it,” Kadri told reporters. “It feels great. That’s the way we wanted to start after the All-Star break, and I feel like everyone contributed.” It was only the second tally in 17 games for Komarov while PA Parenteau ended a 10-game drought by delivering the winning goal in overtime.
            OVERTIME
            1. Schneider never has lost to the Maple Leafs in regulation, posting a 4-0-3 record and 1.64 goals-against average.
            2. Parenteau’s goal was Toronto’s first in 29 chances with the man advantage.
            3. New Jersey has gone 5-for-10 on the power play over its last four games after failing on the previous 19 opportunities.
PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 3, Devils 2

              Preview: Edmonton at Ottawa
When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Canadian Tire Centre, Ottawa, Ontario
Connor McDavid showed no rust in his first game back after missing three months with a broken clavicle and tries to produce another big performance when his Edmonton Oilers visit the struggling Ottawa Senators on Thursday. The dazzling rookie produced a goal and two assists in a 5-1 victory over Columbus on Tuesday as the Oilers snapped their three-game slide.
“I definitely didn’t expect to do that, or play that type of game,” McDavid, the first pick in the 2015 draft, told reporters. “I was very happy with how I felt. The timing and all that felt pretty good.” McDavid joins All-Star Taylor Hall, who is riding a six-game point streak, as Edmonton attempts to make a run at the postseason. Ottawa is fading out of playoff contention with four losses in the last five games after giving up 44 shots in a 6-5 setback at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. “You can’t give up 40-odd shots and expect to win any game, really,” Senators forward Mark Stone told reporters. “The goals were there for us, but we just couldn’t find a way to keep it out of our net.”
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), TSN5, RDS (Ottawa)
ABOUT THE OILERS (20-26-5): Hall has registered two goals and six assists during his streak, giving him a team-best 49 points, and 20-year-old center Leon Draisaitl has 38 after tallying in three of his last four games. McDavid centered Jordan Eberle and Benoit Pouliot in his first game back, pushing his point total to 15 in his first 14 NHL contests. Defenseman Justin Schultz (illness) was back at practice Wednesday after missing the Columbus game, while Cam Talbot stopped 36-of-37 shots Tuesday and has allowed a total of 16 goals in his last nine games.
ABOUT THE SENATORS (23-22-6): Ottawa has surrendered 20 goals in its last four losses and its penalty-killing unit has given up six tallies in a five-game span to drop to last in the league (74.8 percent). The Senators have had little trouble scoring as captain Erik Karlsson leads all NHL defensemen with 53 points – eight in his last seven games. Stone snapped an eight-game point drought with two on Tuesday, while Bobby Ryan has registered three goals in the last four contests and has 18 overall – four behind team leader Mike Hoffman.
              OVERTIME
              1. Ottawa D Marc Methot (lower body) will be a game-time decision after missing the last six contests.
              2. Edmonton D Adam Clendening notched an assist in his debut Tuesday after being claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh.
              3. The Senators won both meetings last season, scoring a total of 11 goals.
              PREDICTION: Oilers 4, Senators 3

                Preview: Detroit at Florida
When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
                Where: BB&T Center, Sunrise, Florida
The Florida Panthers knocked off the league’s top team in its building right after the All-Star break and look to extend their lead in the Atlantic Division when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. The Panthers have won four straight after posting a 5-2 victory at Washington on Tuesday and lead second-place Tampa Bay by five points.
“We know we’re a good team and we believe in ourselves,” Panthers leading scorer Jonathan Huberdeau told the Miami Herald. “We’re showing that on the ice.” The Red Wings are coming off a 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday in which they allowed a pair of power-play tallies and came up empty on two opportunities to drop into a virtual tie for third in the Atlantic – seven points behind Florida. Gustav Nyquist scored the only goal for Detroit, which surprisingly stands in the bottom-third of the league in scoring. Coach Jeff Blashill told reporters after Wednesday’s contest that the Red Wings have to create more havoc and find ways to score goals.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Florida
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (25-17-8): Detroit finished second in the league on the power play last season at 23.5 percent and has fallen to 20th this campaign (17.4) after going 4-for-29 with the man advantage over its last 11 games. “We haven’t delivered as many pucks to the net,” Blashill told reporters. “We haven’t had the opportunities to score as many dirty goals because of it.” Rookie Dylan Larkin and captain Henrik Zetterberg lead the team with 33 points apiece but were kept off the scoresheet Wednesday.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS (30-15-5): Huberdeau continued his torrid stretch with a pair of goals Tuesday and has collected six points in his last four games to push his season total to 37. All-Star Jaromir Jagr notched an assist against Washington to move within one of becoming the sixth player in NHL history with 1,100 and is four goals away from tying Brett Hull for third on the all-time list. Aleksander Barkov, who centers Jagr and Huberdeau, and Jussi Jokinen each are riding four-game point streaks and Reilly Smith has scored four goals in five contests.
                OVERTIME
                1. Panthers All-Star D Aaron Ekblad leads all NHL blue-liners with a plus-22 rating.
                2. Detroit C Riley Sheahan missed Wednesday’s game due to illness but could return against Florida.
                3. Florida has won five of the last seven meetings, including a 2-1 overtime triumph on Nov. 29 in Detroit.

Preview: San Jose at St. Louis
When: 8:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Scottrade Center, St. Louis, Missouri
The St. Louis Blues are struggling to score goals lately, but it hasn’t affected their bottom line much as they begin a three-game homestand Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. St. Louis has scored four goals in its last four games, but is 2-1-1 during that stretch after Troy Brouwer’s goal with 1:05 remaining in the third period gave the Blues a 1-0 victory in Nashville on Tuesday and snapped a scoreless drought of 145:58.
St. Louis sits comfortably in playoff position, third in the Central six points behind first-place Chicago but more importantly nine ahead of Colorado in what is widely believed to be the NHL’s toughest division. The Blues are also 8-1-1 versus the Pacific Division and took two of three meetings with San Jose last season with both victories by a 7-2 margin. San Jose began a difficult four-game road trip which also takes it to Nashville and Chicago with a 3-2 loss to Anaheim on Tuesday – its first regulation setback since Jan. 7. The Sharks, who are second in the Pacific Division – nine points behind Los Angeles and three clear of Anaheim and Arizona, also had a 10-game point streak (8-0-2) halted while Joe Thornton’s 10-game point streak (two goals, 12 assists) also came to an end.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSN California (San Jose), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)
ABOUT THE SHARKS (26-19-4): San Jose shares the best road record in the Western Conference with Los Angeles at 16-7-2 and will be put to the test with 10 of its 14 February games away from home. All-Star Joe Pavelski (team highs of 25 goals and 49 points) scored in three straight games prior to the break before he was kept off the scoresheet against Anaheim while defenseman Brent Burns (18 goals, team-most 26 assists) hasn’t scored in nine contests. Martin Jones is 14-4-2 with a .921 save percentage and 2.29 goals-against average in 20 road games this season after his seven-game road point streak (5-0-2) was stopped Tuesday.
ABOUT THE BLUES (29-16-8): Vladimir Tarasenko is tied with Pavelski for fifth in the NHL with a team-leading 25 goals, but has one in his last 11 games. While defenseman Robert Bortuzzo missed his fifth straight game Tuesday because of a lower-body injury, left wing Magnus Paajarvi returned after missing seven contests with an upper-body ailment. Brian Elliott (11-6-5, .928, 2.13) continues to hold down the fort with No. 1 Jake Allen out with a knee injury and recorded his first shutout of the season Tuesday to improve to 6-2-1 in nine starts since Allen went down.
                  OVERTIME
                  1. The Sharks boast the No. 3 power play in the NHL at 22.1 percent while St. Louis owns the third-best penalty-killing unit at 85.5 percent.
                  2. The Blues haven’t scored a power-play goal in their last seven games (17 opportunities).
                  3. San Jose’s Patrick Marleau is tied for third on the team with 15 goals (Joel Ward), but has only one in his last 14 contests.
                  PREDICTION: Blues 2, Sharks 1

                    Preview: Philadelphia at Nashville
When: 8:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
                    Where: Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tennessee
Philadelphia Flyers rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is riding high on a five-game point streak and looks to strike another critical blow to the Nashville Predators when the teams meet in the Music City on Thursday. Gostisbehere has scored a goal and set up six others during his sizzling stretch and tallied 4:08 into overtime to give Philadelphia a 3-2 win over Nashville on Nov. 27.
Steve Mason made 30 saves as the Flyers posted their second straight victory and seventh in 11 outings (7-3-1) with a 4-2 triumph over Montreal on Tuesday. With fellow goaltender Michal Neuvirth hobbled by a lower-body injury, Mason is expected to be the workhorse yet again for the Flyers – but is just 1-4-1 with a 2.94 goals-against average in his last six meetings with the Predators. Speaking of Nashville, it saw its season-high four-game winning streak come to a halt with a 1-0 setback to Central Division-rival St. Louis on Tuesday. Pekka Rinne, who made 22 saves against the Blues, has yielded just four goals in his last four games (3-1-0) and is 3-1-2 in his career versus Philadelphia.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Tennessee (Nashville)
ABOUT THE FLYERS (22-18-8): Jakub Voracek has adjusted quickly to playing left wing, recording 23 points in 17 games since coach Dave Hakstol made the switch. “Yeah, it’s huge, obviously as a line, me, (Wayne) Simmonds and (captain Claude) Giroux, we use our strength and our big bodies,” Voracek told The Courier Post. “It could be huge down the road.” Voracek collected three assists versus Montreal while Simmonds tallied twice in the win.
ABOUT THE PREDATORS (24-19-8): Filip Forsberg has been limited to just one point in his last six games, but hopes a date with Philadelphia can re-ignite his offense. The 21-year-old Swede collected a goal and an assist in the last meeting and has two of each in three outings with the Flyers. Mike Fisher also tallied in the last encounter with Philadelphia, but has just three goals since then.
                    OVERTIME
                    1. Giroux has recorded 10 points in his last eight games.
                    2. Nashville LW Colin Wilson, who is on injured reserve (lower body), participated in practice on Wednesday.

                      Preview: Dallas at Colorado
When: 9:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
                      Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
After a difficult month of January knocked them out of first place in the Central Division, the Dallas Stars attempt to continue their upward swing when they visit the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. Dallas lost eight of its first 10 games last month (2-6-2) before wrapping it up with a triumph over Calgary and kicked off February with a victory at Winnipeg on Tuesday that put it in position for its first three-game winning streak since Dec. 19-22.
The Stars possess two of the league’s top three scorers in captain Jamie Benn (second, 58 points) and Tyler Seguin (third, 55), who also rank in the top four in goals with 28 and 27, respectively. Colorado had a much better January, winning five of its last six contests to finish with a 9-5-0 record and in the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, but began this month with a 2-1 setback against Central-leading Chicago on Tuesday in the opener of its four-game homestand. Matt Duchene leads the Avalanche with 23 goals but has recorded only one in his last eight games. Colorado won the first two contests of the four-game season series, extending its winning streak against Dallas to eight games.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), Altitude (Colorado)
ABOUT THE STARS (32-14-5): Seguin ended his season high-tying four-game goal-scoring drought with a pair of tallies in the victory over the Jets, putting him three away from his third consecutive 30-goal campaign. Dallas hopes to be at full strength Thursday as defenseman Jordie Benn and Colton Sceviour both could return to the lineup. Jordie Benn has missed four games with a lower-body injury while Sceviour exited Tuesday’s contest with an upper-body ailment suffered on a hit by Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien.
ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (27-23-3): Semyon Varlamov is expected to dress as Calvin Pickard’s backup Thursday after missing more than a week to deal with a legal matter. The 27-year-old Russian, who is 19-12-3 with a 2.59 goals-against average, has not played since allowing one goal in a victory at Dallas on Jan. 23. Captain Gabriel Landeskog appears to have rediscovered his scoring touch, scoring four goals over his last four contests after a seven-game drought.
                      OVERTIME
                      1. The Avalanche have won 11 of their last 12 meetings with the Stars.
                      2. Dallas has surrendered six power-play goals over its last seven games.
                      3. Landeskog has recorded three goals and two assists versus Dallas this season.
                      PREDICTION: Stars 4, Avalanche 2

                        Preview: Chicago at Arizona
When: 9:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona
The Chicago Blackhawks outslugged the Arizona Coyotes in the teams’ first meeting to begin a franchise-best 12-game winning streak. After dropping three of four to enter the All-Star break, the Blackhawks look to emerge victorious in back-to-back encounters on Thursday when they continue their four-game road trip against the Coyotes.
Corey Crawford wasn’t sharp in Chicago’s 7-5 victory over Arizona on Dec. 29, but followed up a sterling performance in January that helped net him NHL Second Star honors by stopping 22 shots in a 2-1 triumph over Colorado on Tuesday. “Just because you did well in the last game, or the last little bit, doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy,” Crawford said. “I think I’ve taken that approach. I think our guys have taken that, too. We always want more.” Arizona would like more scoring as it has mustered just 12 goals during its last eight games (2-5-1). Rookie Anthony Duclair tallied for the second straight contest, but Pacific Division-rival Los Angeles spoiled coach Dave Tippett’s 1,000th career game behind the bench with a 6-2 decision on Tuesday.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Arizona
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (34-16-4): Rookie Artemi Panarin has scored twice in the last three games and also tallied in the first meeting with Arizona. Linemate Patrick Kane collected a goal and two assists against the Coyotes, raising his point total to 33 (eight goals, 25 assists) in 27 career meetings versus the franchise. Defenseman Duncan Keith also scored a goal and set up two others against Arizona and had an assist versus Colorado for his first point since Jan. 19.
ABOUT THE COYOTES (24-21-5): Captain Shane Doan leads Arizona with 19 goals, with three coming in a hat trick versus Chicago in the first meeting. Like Doan, Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been held off the scoresheet in each of the last three games and only notched four points in his first 14 encounters with the Blackhawks before setting up three goals in the December tilt. Tobias Rieder also had three assists in that contest, but has been limited to just four in his last nine outings.
                        OVERTIME
                        1. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews will return to the lineup after serving a mandatory one-game suspension for pulling out of the NHL All-Star Game due to illness.
                        2. The Coyotes scored twice on the power play in the first meeting with the Blackhawks, but are 1-for-28 in their last seven with the man advantage.
                        3. Chicago is 7-1-2 in its last 10 meetings with the Arizona franchise.
                        PREDICTION: Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 2

                          Preview: Columbus at Vancouver
When: 10:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia
The Vancouver Canucks begin their post-All Star break push for a playoff spot Thursday as they host the Columbus Blue Jackets, who sit at the bottom of the NHL in points. The Canucks are getting healthier with center Brandon Sutter back in the lineup, while defenseman Dan Hamhuis and captain Henrik Sedin – their second-leading scorer – are on the mend.
Hamhuis, who has been out since Dec. 9 with a broken jaw, has been practicing and Sedin (37 points in 44 contests) could be back Thursday after missing the last four games with an upper-body injury. “I am looking forward to seeing our whole group being healthy,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning told the Vancouver Sun. “I think we have a favorable schedule going forward where we have played a lot of road games already.” Columbus registered 45 shots against the Canucks in a 5-3 loss on Nov. 10 and dropped a 5-1 decision at Edmonton on Tuesday after outshooting the Oilers 37-35. Columbus coach John Tortorella returns to Vancouver for the first time since being fired by the Canucks after going 34-31-11 in 2013-14.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)
ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (19-28-5): All-Star Brandon Saad has registered three goals in his last three games and is four away from equaling his career high of 23 set last season with Chicago. Saad is tied with Scott Hartnell for the team lead at 35 points, Cam Atkinson is next with 32 after scoring four goals in a three-game span and Brandon Dubinsky has 30 – 14 in his last 14 games. The Blue Jackets have given up four power-play goals in their last three contests and rank last in the league in goals allowed (3.19).
ABOUT THE CANUCKS (20-19-11): Sutter recorded a goal in his first game back from a sports hernia that kept him sidelined for 2 1/2 months and can add juice to an offense that sits in the bottom-fifth of the league at 2.36 goals per contest. There is optimism the Canucks can turn that around as All-Star Daniel Sedin tops the team with 21 goals and 44 points while the 20-year-old Bo Horvat has tallied seven times in his last 11 contests. Brandon Prust was placed on waivers and 19-year-old rookie Jake Virtanen has taken his spot.
                          OVERTIME
                          1. Columbus D Seth Jones has recorded six assists and a plus-3 rating in 11 games since being acquired from Nashville.
                          2. The Canucks have gone six games without a power-play goal, coming up empty on eight opportunities.
                          3. Blue Jackets G Joonas Korpisalo gave up five goals Tuesday after earning the team a point in three straight starts (2-0-1).
PREDICTION: Canucks 5, Blue Jackets 2

                            Preview: Anaheim at Los Angeles
When: 10:00 PM ET, Thursday, February 4, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
It took more than half the season for the Anaheim Ducks – considered by many to be a Stanley Cup contender – to climb into playoff position as they visit the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Anaheim has won four straight and is tied with Arizona for third in the Pacific Division with two games in hand following a 3-2 victory over San Jose on Tuesday that improved the Ducks to 11-3-1 in their last 15 games as their 1-7-2 start becomes a distant memory.
Anaheim returns home for a crucial meeting with the Coyotes on Friday before embarking on a season-long seven-game road trip that begins in Pittsburgh on Monday and ends Feb. 18 in Vancouver. “Four days could really change the outcome of what you are doing for the next month, so every game is really important and we are taking them that way,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters. First-place Los Angeles continues to sail along with a nine-point lead in the Pacific after recording a season high for goals in a 6-2 victory over Arizona on Tuesday. Former Rocket Richard Trophy winner Vincent Lecavalier has rediscovered his scoring touch with five goals in 11 games since the Kings acquired him from Philadelphia last month, adding another weapon to a club which has six players with 10 or more goals.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network
ABOUT THE DUCKS (23-18-7): Anaheim is still the lowest-scoring team in the NHL at 2.13 goals per game, but a stingy defense led by a deep blue line, the goaltending of rookie John Gibson and Frederik Andersen and the league’s top penalty-killing unit (89.8 percent) has the club’s confidence soaring. Rickard Rakell continues to produce since moving to a line with Corey Perry (team-high 20 goals) as he has three tallies and two assists in his last five games, and is tied for second on the team in goals (11) and third in points (24). The Ducks, who are 12 points behind Los Angeles, regained the services of Cam Fowler on Tuesday as the defenseman played 20 minutes, 16 seconds in his first game since missing 13 because of a knee injury.
ABOUT THE KINGS (31-16-3): Center Anze Kopitar (team bests of 31 assists and 44 points) was rewarded with an eight-year, $80 million contract extension last month and has compiled three goals and 11 assists in the 10 games after recording two helpers Tuesday. Tyler Toffoli (team-high 22 goals, plus-23 rating) hasn’t scored in six games since tallying in three consecutive contests. Los Angeles’ power play erupted for three goals in seven opportunities Tuesday after going 1-for-12 in its previous four games (1-3-0) and boasts the NHL’s No. 4 unit with the man advantage at 21.4 percent.
                            OVERTIME
                            1. The Kings, who are 2-3-0 in their last five contests, embark on a season-long seven-game road trip after the Anaheim game.
                            2. Perry has scored six of the Ducks’ 24 power-play goals and has a team-high three game-winning tallies.
                            3. This is the second of five meetings this season after Los Angeles won the first encounter 3-2 in Anaheim on Jan. 17 behind second-period goals by Lecavalier, Toffoli and Kopitar.
                            PREDICTION: Ducks 3, Kings 2
