      Preview: Columbus at NY Islanders
When: 7:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
The New York Islanders dominated their Metropolitan Division adversaries by posting at least a point in each of their first nine meetings (7-0-2) before losing their last three encounters. The Islanders look to regain their footing at the expense of the Columbus Blue Jackets when the cellar-dwelling team makes its first trip to the Barclays Center on Tuesday.
New York has seen its offense go limp to begin the new calendar year as it has mustered just three goals in setbacks to Pittsburgh (Jan. 2) and Washington (Thursday) before getting shut out in a 4-0 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. “We looked a bit off, sluggish, nothing was crisp and we paid for it,” said forward Kyle Okposo (team-leading 31 points), who has collected two goals and an assist in a pair of victories over Columbus. The Blue Jackets are in no position to shed a tear for the plight of the Islanders, as they have dropped both ends of a home-and-home series with Carolina to fall to 2-5-1 in their last eight. Cam Atkinson scored his second goal in three games in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Hurricanes and also tallied in Columbus’ 3-2 overtime loss to New York on Dec. 12.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), MSG-Plus (New York)
ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (15-24-4): Josh Anderson scored after being paired with fellow rookie Kerby Rychel and Brandon Dubinsky on Saturday as Columbus desperately attempted to overcome a three-goal deficit versus Carolina. “It’s good to see them get an opportunity,” Dubinsky told the Columbus Dispatch. “Those are two guys who play my style of game, which is getting the puck deep and forechecking and banging. Hopefully we can create some havoc out there and make it tough on the opposing (defense).” Coach John Tortorella liked what he saw as the trio remained intact in Monday’s practice and will stay together against New York.
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (22-15-5): Jaroslav Halak has yielded seven goals on 68 shots in two starts since returning from an upper-body injury, but a date with Columbus could get him back on track. The 30-year-old made 37 saves in a 4-0 win over the Blue Jackets on Oct. 20 and turned aside 28 shots in the latter meeting to improve to 11-4-3 versus the club. Halak is working behind a defense that is reeling with the long-term loss of veteran Johnny Boychuk (upper body) as well as fellow blue-liner Travis Hamonic, who sat out Monday’s practice and remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
      OVERTIME
      1. New York has lost seven of its last 11 games, getting outscored by a 24-6 margin in the setbacks.
      2. Columbus LW Brandon Saad has recorded 12 points (six goals, six assists) in his last 10 contests.
      3. The Islanders are 5-0-3 in their last eight home games versus the Blue Jackets.
PREDICTION: Islanders 5, Blue Jackets 2

        Preview: Pittsburgh at Carolina
When: 7:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Where: PNC Arena, Raleigh, North Carolina
Scintillating special teams play has enabled the Pittsburgh Penguins to get back on track after a disastrous five-game losing skid. With points in seven of their last nine games (5-2-2), the Penguins look to continue their ascent in the Metropolitan on Tuesday when they visit the division-rival Carolina Hurricanes.
“I like the consistency,” forward Eric Fehr told the Penguins’ website of the team’s perfect 25-for-25 run of killing off short-handed situations in the last nine contests. “… I like the way we all think on the same page, and it’s worked for us so far.” Fehr scored a short-handed goal and Patric Hornqvist tallied with the man advantage as Pittsburgh posted a 3-1 win over Montreal on Saturday. Former Penguin Jordan Staal has collected a goal and an assist in each of his team’s last three contests, with the final two resulting in a home-and-home sweep of Columbus over the weekend. Staal, who was the second overall pick of the 2006 draft by Pittsburgh, also tallied in the Hurricanes’ 2-1 victory over the Penguins on Dec. 19.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), TVA, FSN Carolinas
ABOUT THE PENGUINS (20-16-5): The Penguins are a blistering 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) on the power play since falling to the Hurricanes last month. Evgeni Malkin scored with the man advantage in that contest and has two goals and seven assists in his last six games. Captain Sidney Crosby, who set up Malkin for the lone goal versus the Hurricanes, recorded six tallies and as many assists during an eight-game stretch before being held off the scoresheet in each of the last two contests.
ABOUT THE HURRICANES (18-18-7): John-Michael Liles has scored two goals in the last three games and also tallied in the first meeting with Pittsburgh. Fellow defenseman Justin Faulk, who notched an assist in last month’s encounter with the Penguins, has impressed Bill Peters to the point that the Carolina coach feels that the 23-year-old should be included in the Norris Trophy conversation. Faulk’s 12 power-play goals are just eight shy of the NHL record for a defenseman, set by Sheldon Souray in 2006-07.
        OVERTIME
        1. Carolina G Cam Ward made 37 saves against Pittsburgh last month to improve to 15-7-3 versus the club in his career.
        2. Pittsburgh G Marc-Andre Fleury owns a stingy 1.94 goals-against average on the road this season.
        3. The Hurricanes have scored a power-play goal in each of the last two contests after going 0-for-14 with the man advantage in the previous eight.
        PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Hurricanes 1

Preview: New Jersey at St. Louis
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Where: Scottrade Center, St. Louis, Missouri
Having put an end to a five-game losing streak, the battered and bruised St. Louis Blues will open a four-game homestand against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. The Blues lost five players to injury in a pair of weekend games versus Anaheim and Los Angeles and four of them, including No. 1 goaltender Jake Allen, are listed as week-to-week.
St. Louis has seven games remaining until the All-Star break and is trying to persevere through the latest wave of injuries that also victimized defensemen Jay Bouwmeester and Carl Gunnarsson and forward Magnus Paajarvi. “It’s been that type of season,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “We’ve battled through this thing. Nobody’s feeling sorry for us in the League. We’ve got to get points and we’ve got to finish this thing strong.” New Jersey has injury concerns of its own with leading scorer Michael Cammalleri set to miss his sixth consecutive game. The Devils have dropped four in a row to the Blues, including a 2-0 setback at home on Nov. 10.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG-Plus 2 (New Jersey), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)
ABOUT THE DEVILS (21-17-5): New Jersey snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 victory at Minnesota on Sunday in the opener of a four-game road trip, but the Devils have scored only four goals in their last four games and managed 17 shots versus the Wild. Defenseman John Moore is dealing with a lower-body injury that will cause him to miss a third game in a row while Keith Kinkaid will get a rare start in place of workhorse Cory Schneider. “We’ve got to get him playing,” New Jersey coach John Hynes said of Kinkaid. “We didn’t want to go too long. It’s a good opportunity for him.”
ABOUT THE BLUES (24-14-7): While St. Louis is hopeful that center Paul Stastny will be able to play against New Jersey, the team recalled forward Ty Rattie and defenseman Chris Butler from Chicago of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis. Brian Elliott made 26 saves in Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Kings and will be in for a heavy workload with Allen sidelined by a lower-body injury. “I think he’s really looking forward to carrying the ball here,” Hitchcock said. “I’m really confident that he’s going to play awful well every night and gives us a chance to win.”
          OVERTIME
          1. A victory will make Hitchcock the sixth coach in league history to notch 200 wins with two different teams.
          2. The Devils are 0-for-9 on the power play over the past four games.
          3. Elliott is 2-4-0 with a 2.71 goals-against average versus New Jersey.
          PREDICTION: Blues 3, Devils 1

            Preview: Buffalo at Minnesota
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Where: Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul, Minnesota
Consistency continues to elude the Minnesota Wild, who look to bounce back from a lackluster defeat when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night in the second of a three-game homestand. One night after skating to a 2-1 victory at Western Conference-leading Dallas, Minnesota suffered a 2-1 setback to the New Jersey Devils.
The Wild managed only 18 shots against the Devils, including seven over the first two periods. “We go out and beat a top team in their own building like that and then come out like that and not play a full 60,” Minnesota forward Charlie Coyle said. “We’re too good of a team to come out flat like that and not play our game. We can’t afford games like that.” The Sabres are coming off a 4-2 victory at Winnipeg, snapping a six-game skid (0-6-0) in which they scored a total of eight goals. Playing the finale of a three-game road trip, Buffalo is seeking back-to-back victories for the first time since Dec. 12-14.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Buffalo, FSN North-Plus (Minnesota)
ABOUT THE SABRES (16-22-4): Rookie center Sam Reinhart, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft, broke out of his goal-scoring slump by registering his first career hat trick in Sunday’s game at Winnipeg. Reinhart connected twice in the first 20 minutes for Buffalo, which had scored a league-low 15 first-period goals entering the contest. “It has been a frustrating time not having success early in games, and we’ve been having to try to come back late in the third,” Reinhart said. To get a couple early is great for our confidence.”
ABOUT THE WILD (22-12-8): Minnesota coach Mike Yeo is flustered by his power play, which has only 22 opportunities in the past 12 games and converted one. “I can’t understand why we draw one power play a game right now. It makes no sense to me whatsoever,” Yeo said. “It’s night after night, it doesn’t matter where or who we play against, and it doesn’t matter who’s officiating, it’s a consistent thing. I’m trying to find reasons, and I can’t understand why.” Goaltender Devan Dubnyk blanked the Sabres last season in his debut with the Wild.
            OVERTIME
            1. Minnesota outscored the Sabres 13-3 in a two-game series sweep last season.
            2. Buffalo is 5-for-19 on the power play in the past five games after failing to convert on 21 straight chances in its previous seven contests.
            3. Ex-Sabre Jason Pominville has two goals and four assists in four games versus Buffalo.
            PREDICTION: Wild 4, Sabres 2

              Preview: San Jose at Winnipeg
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
              Where: MTS Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba
The San Jose Sharks attempt to string together three straight victories for the first time since November when they visit the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. San Jose outscored Toronto and Calgary by a combined 12-4 in back-to-back triumphs and vies for its first three-game winning streak since capturing six in a row from Nov. 13-22.
Joe Thornton has been an offensive force of late, recording at least one point in 10 of his last 11 games while registering four multi-point performances over his past seven contests. Winnipeg has dropped three of its last four games, including the opener of its three-game homestand against Buffalo on Sunday. The Jets are hoping Blake Wheeler has found his scoring touch as the team’s points leader tallied versus the Sabres to snap his 12-game drought. Wheeler notched two assists Jan. 2 as Winnipeg posted a 4-1 victory at San Jose in the first of the teams’ three meetings this season.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSN California (San Jose), TSN3 (Winnipeg)
ABOUT THE SHARKS (20-18-2): Brent Burns matched Thornton on Monday with a goal and an assist in San Jose’s 5-4 victory in Calgary, making him the first NHL defenseman with 18 tallies in his team’s first 40 games since Al MacInnis accomplished the feat in 1990-91 with the Flames. The 30-year-old Burns already has surpassed his goal total from last season (17) and is four away from matching his career high set in 2013-14. Logan Couture, who has missed 30 of San Jose’s first 40 games due to injuries, recorded his first goal of the campaign in Monday’s victory as he hopes to reach double digits for the sixth consecutive season.
ABOUT THE JETS (19-20-3): Mark Scheifele, who is third on the team with 12 goals, sat out Sunday’s loss and likely will miss at least three more games with a lower-body injury. “Mark had some tests done after (Sunday’s) pregame skate … and didn’t really like the results of that,” coach Paul Maurice told the Winnipeg Sun. “He’s going to be at least five or six days, maybe a week, before we’re looking at having him back on the ice.” Bryan Little shares the team lead in goals with Drew Stafford at 14 but has gone seven games without a tally.
              OVERTIME
              1. Jets C Mathieu Perreault is expected to play against the Sharks after suffering an undisclosed injury Sunday.
              2. Burns has collected six goals and five assists during his seven-game point streak while posting five multi-point performances over his last 10 contests.
              3. Winnipeg D Paul Postma, who has been a healthy scratch since Nov. 10 and appeared in only two games this season, was assigned to Manitoba of the American Hockey League for conditioning.
              PREDICTION: Jets 3, Sharks 2

                Preview: Nashville at Chicago
When: 8:30 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
                Where: United Center, Chicago, Illinois
Patrick Kane offered quite the understatement after propelling the red-hot Chicago Blackhawks to their season-high seventh straight victory. After telling reporters that the reigning Stanley Cup champions are “trending in the right direction,” Kane and the Blackhawks look to keep the visiting Nashville Predators spiraling down the standings on Tuesday when the Central Division rivals meet at the United Center.
Kane tallied twice in Sunday’s 6-3 victory over Colorado to increase his point total to 12 (four goals, eight assists) during Chicago’s winning streak. The 2013 Conn Smythe Trophy winner also scored twice as the Blackhawks and Predators split a home-and-home series last month – with the host club emerging victorious both times. While Chicago is hot on the heels of division-leading Dallas, Nashville followed a 5-1 victory over the Blackhawks on Dec. 10 by losing nine of 13 (4-7-2). “Is there a concern in the last three to five games? Yeah, there is,” coach Peter Laviolette told reporters after the Predators dropped their third straight with a 4-0 setback to Arizona on Saturday. “We’ve got to be better and there’s no excuse.”
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), CSN Chicago

                ABOUT THE PREDATORS (19-16-7):
James Neal has torched the Blackhawks during his career, scoring twice in the most recent meeting and accumulating 14 goals and five assists in 20 outings. Eric Nystrom tallied in each encounter this season and defenseman Roman Josi notched a pair of assists. “We’re in a playoff race, and it’s going to go by fast,” Josi told the team’s website of the Predators’ plight. “You have to win those games right now. You can’t wait until the end of the year to win games and think you’re going to make the playoffs.”
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (27-13-4): Captain Jonathan Toews recorded his second three-goal performance of the season on Sunday and has two goals and three assists in his last two games. Corey Crawford has won five straight starts overall and boasts an impressive 15-5-1 mark with six shutouts and a 1.62 goals-against average at home this season. The two-time Jennings Trophy winner kept Nashville in check on Dec. 8, turning aside 36-of-37 shots in a 4-1 victory at the United Center.
                OVERTIME
                1. Nashville is 1-for-18 on the power play in the last six games and just 6-for-11 on the penalty kill in the last three.
                2. Chicago veteran Marian Hossa tallied twice versus Colorado to move within seven goals of 500 for his career.
                3. Predators G Pekka Rinne, who has yielded 19 goals in his last six games (2-4-0), is 4-8-3 on the road this season.
                PREDICTION: Blackhawks 3, Predators 1

                  Preview: Tampa Bay at Colorado
When: 9:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
                  Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
Defenseman Tyson Barrie is on track for a second straight 50-point season and looks to build off an award-winning week when his Colorado Avalanche host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. Barrie recorded six points during a three-game winning streak before being blanked in the 6-3 loss at Chicago on Sunday and was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week.
Barrie, whose father Len was an NHL forward and former co-owner of the Lightning, registered 53 points in 2014-15 and has put up 29 in 39 games this season. The Avalanche’s loss on Sunday was only their fifth in regulation over the last 19 games (12-5-2) and they stand just outside a playoff position in the Western Conference, while the Lightning have won three of four and sit in a similar spot in the East. Nikita Kucherov has taken over the scoring lead for Tampa Bay with 33 points, and his goal in overtime beat Vancouver 3-2 on Saturday. Alex Killorn, who also scored in the win, told reporters, “Hopefully, this can build us some momentum.”
                  TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN
ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (21-17-4): Tampa Bay is getting more production from its blue-line corps – with Victor Hedman and Anton Stralman leading the way, as usual. Hedman recorded three points in the win at Edmonton on Friday and Stralman has posted a goal and six assists in his last six contests. Captain Steven Stamkos tops the team with 18 goals, including two in his last three games, and current linemate Vladislav Namestnikov has registered three assists and a plus-5 rating (plus-10 overall) in his past two contests.
ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (21-19-3): Colorado has scored 35 goals in its last 10 games and averaged four in the past four, with five players recording at least 29 points. The Avalanche have struggled defensively, ranking 25th in the league in goals-against through Sunday while surrendering seven power-play tallies in their last six contests. Semyon Varlamov was pulled in the second period Sunday but is expected to get the start Tuesday, while defenseman Erik Johnson (lower body) likely will miss his fourth straight game.
                  OVERTIME
                  1. The Avalanche have earned at least one point in the last four meetings, including a 2-1 victory at Tampa Bay on Oct. 29.
                  2. Colorado’s Matt Duchene has scored four goals in his last four games to match last season’s total (21) and is tied with fellow C Nathan MacKinnon for the team lead at 37 points.
                  3. Tampa Bay C Tyler Johnson, who registered 72 points last season, has been held to one assist in six games since returning from injured reserve.
                  PREDICTION: Avalanche 4, Lightning 3

                    Preview: Edmonton at Arizona
When: 9:00 PM ET, Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Where: Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona
The Arizona Coyotes attempt to extend their winning streak to four games when they continue their season-high seven-game homestand against the Pacific Division-rival Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. Arizona has earned at least one point in five straight games (4-0-1) and nine of its last 10 (7-1-2), including Saturday’s 4-0 triumph over Nashville in the opener of its lengthy stretch at Gila River Arena.
Louis Domingue has been a key component to the Coyotes’ recent success, going 6-0-2 in his last eight starts during the absence of Mike Smith (abdomen), and is expected to make his 11th start in 12 games. Edmonton has lost two straight and six of its last eight (2-5-1), with both victories in that span coming after regulation. The Oilers hope to improve upon their league-worst 5-14-2 road record after completing a 2-4-0 homestand with a 2-1 setback against red-hot Florida on Sunday in which Mark Letestu scored his third goal in eight games. Arizona and Edmonton split their first two meetings this season, with each team winning at home.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), FSN Arizona Plus
ABOUT THE OILERS (17-23-3): While rookie Connor McDavid will not return until after the All-Star break, Nail Yakupov could be in the lineup Tuesday after missing Edmonton’s last 21 games with a sprained ankle. The 22-year-old Russian recorded only two goals and 10 assists in 22 contests before the injury and hasn’t tallied since Oct. 18 at Vancouver. Taylor Hall leads the team with 16 goals but has registered one in his last 11 contests.
ABOUT THE COYOTES (21-16-4): Tobias Rieder scored twice against the Predators to become the sixth member of the Coyotes to reach double digits in goals this season. It was the second two-goal performance of the campaign for the 23-year-old German, who also notched an assist to give him three points for the second time in six contests. Mikkel Boedker is Arizona’s leading scorer with 31 points despite notching only one in his last four games but owns the team’s worst plus/minus rating at minus-14.
                    OVERTIME
                    1. The Coyotes will honor captain Shane Doan becoming the franchise leader in goals during a ceremony prior to their Jan. 21 game against San Jose.
                    2. Edmonton G Cam Talbot started every game during the homestand, allowing fewer than three goals in three contests but losing two of them.
                    3. Arizona has scored a power-play goal in three straight games while going 3-for-7 during that span and is 7-for-23 over the last seven contests.
                    PREDICTION: Coyotes 4, Oilers 2
