Preview: Bruins (19-14) at Rangers (21-14)

    Date: January 11, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

It's been three weeks since the Boston Bruins won consecutive games and nearly a month longer for the New York Rangers.

While neither is in position to do so Monday night at Madison Square Garden, both will be looking for the makings of such momentum that came consistently earlier in the season.

Both teams fell just short of consecutive wins Saturday with Boston (21-14-5) losing 2-1 in overtime at Ottawa and New York (22-14-5) falling 4-3 in overtime at home against Eastern Conference-leading Washington.

The Bruins, playing their third on a five-game road trip, have gone 2-5-1 since a three-game winning streak from Dec. 16-20. The Rangers, completing a three-game homestand, are 6-11-3 dating to wins on Nov. 21 and 23, though they weren't entirely discouraged with scoring three straight goals to start the third period after falling behind 2-0, then losing the lead in the final seconds of regulation.

"This was taking a step forward as a team," coach Alain Vigneault said. "We battled back from a two-goal deficit against one of the best defensive teams in the league, one of the goaltenders that had been hard on a lot of teams. We were real close to getting it done."

Boston's Claude Julien had similar thoughts on his team's effort after tying the game early in the second.

"We came out and competed hard so again not unhappy with our effort," Julien said. "We had a chance to win this game. It could have easily gone the other way, so we'll take the point and move on here."

The Bruins' inconsistency begins with scoring. They've been held to one goal or less in four of the last eight, and seven of the 19 scored in that span came in one game. There's been some inconsistency among their lines with David Krejci missing the last five games with an upper-body injury, while Brad Marchand returned against Ottawa from a three-game suspension.

"We didn't have a great start, but once we got our legs under us and started playing our game, I thought we played pretty decent," Marchand told the team's official website. "It felt really good to be back and be around the guys, feel like part of the team again. I just want to keep moving forward now."

The Bruins have dominated the series lately with six wins in the last seven meetings, including a 4-3 victory in Boston on Nov. 27.

More recently, things have been messy in the defensive zone for the Rangers with an average of 3.92 goals allowed per game over a 4-7-2 span. It again hurt them as the Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom scored with six seconds remaining in regulation.

"Unfortunately we left a good player in front of the net, all alone, and there was a rebound and he put it in," Vigneault told the team's official website.

A penalty kill getting the job done just 72.9 percent of the time in those 13 games with a power play at 13.0 percent hasn't helped. Boston likely won't be the team to break through against with a 36 for 38 (94.7 percent) kill over the last 14 games.

New York's Henrik Lundqvist has given up at least two goals in 11 straight games while going 4-5-1 with a 3.78 goals-against average and has lost his last five games versus Boston with a 3.85 mark.

Counterpart Tuukka Rask has a 3.29 GAA over a 0-2-1 stretch but has a 1.90 GAA on a 6-1-0 run against the Rangers.

Preview: Sharks (18-18) at Flames (18-19)

    Date: January 11, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks boast two of the NHL's hottest players but haven't harnessed those performances into consistent wins.

The Calgary Flames have also been inconsistent lately, but they have usually shined in recent matchups with the Sharks. They'll get a chance to earn another win in the series Monday night.

Joe Pavelski has nine goals and six assists in his last 12 games and defenseman Brent Burns has seven goals and seven assists in his past nine. The Sharks, though, are 5-9-2 since the beginning of December and 3-3-2 in their last eight road games.

San Jose (19-18-2) could use more players carrying the load like they did in a 7-0 rout of Toronto on Saturday. Tomas Hertl led the way with two goals and an assist while Burns and Pavelski each contributed a goal and an assist in the team's most lopsided victory since a 9-2 win over the New York Rangers on Oct. 8, 2013.

"When we have four dangerous lines out there, you see the potential that this team has. If we're going to make a run and string a lot of wins together, that's what we're going to need," forward Tommy Wingels said. "Certainly, a lot of guys feel better about their games today than in the past."

The Flames (19-19-2) dropped to 4-5-0 in their last nine with a 2-1 defeat to visiting Arizona on Thursday. Calgary has lost three of four at home following a franchise-record 11 consecutive victories.

Johnny Gaudreau scored the lone goal - his team-best 18th - to end a four-game point drought.

"Very disappointed because those are the games where you need to compete, to win battles, to keep competing and we didn't have everyone tonight," coach Bob Hartley said. "You can't win when you have five or six forwards going. It's sad but we were just not good enough."

The Flames will try to bounce back by earning their eighth win in the last 10 meetings with San Jose. Calgary's 4-2 victory Dec. 8 was its fourth in the last five home matchups, and Michael Frolik scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period.

Frolik is close to returning from an upper-body injury that's sidelined him since Dec. 15, but likely won't be ready to go for Monday's game.

The Sharks won the first meeting 5-2 in San Jose on Nov. 28. Pavelski had a pair of assists - his only points against Calgary in 2015-16 - and Burns also registered his lone point in the season series, an assist.

Karri Ramo is expected to face the two players Monday and looks to lower his 1.01 goals-against average from his first three starts in 2016. Ramo is 4-1-0 with a 1.39 GAA in his last five starts against San Jose.

San Jose's Martin Jones was pulled from his latest start in Calgary after giving up three goals on 14 shots. Alex Stalock has made each of his five appearances against the Flames in Calgary and is 1-2-1 with a 2.15 GAA.

The Sharks are playing back-to-back games in Canada, traveling to Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano, who has four goals and eight assists in his last nine games, has one goal and six assists in his last six versus San Jose.

Preview: Panthers (20-12) at Canucks (13-16)

      Date: January 11, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Roberto Luongo represents the Vancouver Canucks' past and Chris Higgins may soon as well.

Luongo will try to help the visiting Florida Panthers extend their club-record win streak to 13 games Monday night against a Canucks team that has announced that they are trying to trade the underachieving Higgins.

Florida (26-12-4) opted to rest Luongo for the opener of this back-to-back set, with Al Montoya making 24 saves in Sunday's 2-1 win at Edmonton. Now the Panthers can become the first team to win 13 in a row since a 15-game run by Pittsburgh in 2012-13.

Luongo has started nine times in this run, posting a 1.31 goals-against average with two shutouts for the longest win streak of his career.

That career is known best for when he played for Vancouver (16-16-10) between 2006-14. This is his second game back at Rogers Arena since leaving, as he made 32 saves in a 3-1 victory Jan. 8, 2015.

He said a warm ovation from the fans that night brought closure to him for his time in Vancouver, where he also won gold for Canada at the 2010 Olympics.

Luongo was a teammate for three-plus seasons with Higgins, who has endured an injury-plagued season and has gone 22 games without a goal. The winger is not expected to dress after the Canucks said Sunday that they are exploring a trade.

"That's a tough day for everybody in our organization," second-year coach Willie Desjardins said. "He's brought a lot to our team through the years before I was here."

The Canucks fell to 3-2-1 on this seven-game homestand with Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to Tampa Bay. They have scored three goals or fewer in seven straight games since a 5-4 shootout loss at Florida on Dec. 20.

"When you start losing, then I think you have to look at trying different options and trying different things," Desjardins said.

Vancouver will start giving more ice time to younger players with 23-year-old Emerson Etem ready for his club debut. Etem was acquired Friday from the New York Rangers after he had three assists in 19 games with them after spending his first three seasons with Anaheim.

Etem will be on a line with Linden Vey, a former junior hockey teammate.

"It makes that on-ice transition that much more easy," Etem said. "Definitely lucky to have that and like I said, I just can't wait to get going here."

Desjardins will start Jacob Markstrom in goal while Jannik Hansen, third on the team with 22 points, is out with an upper-body injury.

Aleksander Barkov has 14 points during Florida's winning streak, Jonathan Huberdeau has 13 and Jaromir Jagr 10. Huberdeau has five points in a three-game run and Jagr has five in a four-game streak.

Huberdeau and Jaromir Jagr had Sunday's goals as the Panthers won despite finishing with 14 shots for their lowest total in three seasons.

"It was a grinder-type game and we did what we had to do to win," center Nick Bjugstad said. "We didn't necessarily play well, but you're going to have those games where you don't feel the greatest but you have to sneak them out."

Preview: Red Wings (20-13) at Kings (24-12)

        Date: January 11, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings have scored some timely goals to remain unbeaten on their longest road trip of the season.

The Los Angeles Kings, meanwhile, haven't generated much offense of any kind lately but could face struggling goaltender Jimmy Howard when they attempt to earn a rare win over the Red Wings on Monday night.

Riley Sheahan scored with 3:44 remaining as Detroit (22-13-7) moved to 4-0-0 on its six-game trek with a 2-1 win against Anaheim on Sunday. The Red Wings have won each of those contests by one goal and have scored the go-ahead goal in the final seven minutes or later in three of them.

Tomas Tatar kicked that off by finding the net with 2:50 to go in a 4-3 win over Buffalo on Jan. 2.

"When you can get wins like this in close games and work really hard to get them, I think it's huge for us and builds your confidence," Sheahan said.

Detroit has outscored Los Angeles 16-9 while winning five of the last six matchups and prevailed 3-2 Nov. 20.

Dylan Larkin recorded the key goal in the second period and scored his team-leading 14th in last Monday's 1-0 win in New Jersey.

The Kings (26-12-3) have produced a combined six goals in their past four games after totaling 18 in their previous four. Anze Kopitar had his team's tally in a 2-1 shootout loss to St. Louis on Saturday, Los Angeles' second defeat in three games since a string of five consecutive wins.

"We just have to bear down on our opportunities," defenseman Jake Muzzin said. "We had good looks and good shots, some point-blank shots and some second and third ones. And if we capitalized on those, there would have been a different outcome to the game."

With Petr Mrazek having started in Anaheim, Los Angeles might have an opportunity to snap out of its recent woes with Howard in net.

Howard is expected to make his first appearance since getting pulled in a second straight game Dec. 29 in a 4-1 loss in Winnipeg. The former Red Wings starting netminder is 0-1-3 with a 3.77 goals-against average in his last five starts and hasn't earned a victory in three road starts since Nov. 21.

Howard has shined in his last six matchups against the Kings, however, going 5-1-0 with a 1.65 GAA, but his most recent was Oct. 31, 2014.

Kings starter Jonathan Quick earned a 1-0 win in his latest game with Detroit in February and the most recent matchup in Los Angeles. He was 2-8-1 with a 3.54 GAA in his previous 11 meetings.

The Red Wings have dropped three of their past four games at Staples Center.

Jeff Carter scored both of Los Angeles' goals at Detroit in November, giving him six goals and three assists in his last 10 matchups. Tatar, who scored his 13th goal Sunday, has three goals and one assist in his past five with the Kings.

Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg has two points in each of his last three games against Los Angeles and a combined 15 in his past 10.

          Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

                Preview: Boston at NY Rangers
When: 7:00 PM ET, Monday, January 11, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
The Boston Bruins look to snap out of their downward spiral and continue their mastery in the series when they visit the New York Rangers on Monday. The Bruins have dropped six of their last eight (2-5-1) overall but have posted seven victories in their last eight meetings with the Rangers, including a 4-3 triumph at home on Nov. 27.
The Bruins scored a total of eight goals in their last six losses and key offensive force David Krejci (shoulder) remains out indefinitely after having missed the past six games. The Rangers are beginning to perk up after a rough stretch with points in four of their last six contests (3-2-1) and showed progress despite a 4-3 overtime loss to Eastern Conference-leading Washington on Saturday. “We battled back from a two-goal deficit against one of the best defensive teams in the league, one of the goaltenders that have made it hard on a lot of teams,” New York coach Alain Vigneault told reporters. “We were real close to getting it done, but I think we took a step in the right direction.” Rick Nash has posted five points in as many games for the Rangers.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet, TVA, NESN (Boston), MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE BRUINS (21-14-5): Brad Marchand returned to the lineup for Saturday’s 2-1 overtime loss at Ottawa after serving a three-game suspension for an illegal hit and posted a plus-1 rating in 20:24 of ice time. Marchand is tied for the team lead in goals with Patrice Bergeron at 15 and especially is needed with Krejci (33 points in 35 games) on the shelf. Bergeron tops the team in points (38), with Loui Eriksson (34) close behind, but the Bruins need more from Brett Connolly (five goals), who was a healthy scratch Saturday.
ABOUT THE RANGERS (22-14-5): New York has its own injury concerns with Chris Kreider (hand) out indefinitely and its special teams have struggled over the last five games. The Rangers are 0-for-15 on the power play and just 11-for-17 on the penalty kill in the past two weeks. Leading scorer Mats Zuccarello (16 goals, 31 points) has gone three games without a point while Kevin Hayes contributed a goal and an assist Saturday in his second game back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch in two straight.
                OVERTIME
                1. New York LW Viktor Stalberg has recorded a goal in three of his last four contests, doubling his total for the season.
                2. Boston leads the NHL on the power play, converting at 28.3 percent, and went 2-for-3 against the Rangers earlier this campaign.
                3. New York G Henrik Lundqvist is 21-12-2 lifetime with a 1.97 goals-against average and .933 save percentage against the Bruins.
                PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Bruins 2

                  Preview: San Jose at Calgary
When: 9:00 PM ET, Monday, January 11, 2016
                  Where: Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary, Alberta
The San Jose Sharks look to build off a season-best offensive performance when they start a quick two-game road trip against the Calgary Flames on Monday. The Sharks, who play at Winnipeg on Tuesday, ended a two-game slide with a 7-0 victory over Toronto on Saturday that left them in a virtual tie with Calgary for fifth place in the tightly packed Pacific Division.
“We had four dangerous lines out there,” San Jose forward Tommy Wingels told reporters. “If we’re going to make a run and string a lot of games together, that’s what we’re going to need.” The Sharks have been one of the best road teams in the league (13-6-2) and the Flames won 11 straight contests at home before dropping three of their last four at Scotiabank Saddledome. Calgary has been idle since dropping a 2-1 home decision to Arizona on Thursday and needs its top two scorers to warm up again. Johnny Gaudreau scored the lone goal versus the Coyotes for his first point in five games and Sean Monahan has notched one point in his last six contests for the Flames.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, CSN California (San Jose), Sportsnet West (Calgary)
ABOUT THE SHARKS (19-18-2): Tomas Hertl gave San Jose a spark Saturday with two goals after posting the same amount over his previous 34 contests. Hertl’s emergence would be a welcome addition to an offense that boasts four players with at least 29 points, including the top goal scorer among NHL defensemen in Brent Burns (17 goals). Burns has recorded seven tallies and 14 points in his last nine games and Joe Thornton also has been on a hot streak of late, registering three goals and 10 assists in his past 10 contests.
ABOUT THE FLAMES (19-19-2): Coach Bob Hartley told reporters Saturday that he would try physical right wing Michael Ferland (two goals) on a line with Gaudreau (18 goals, 40 points) and Monahan (12, 27) against San Jose. Ferland, who registered three goals and five points in nine playoff games last season, can add some bite alongside the talented pair. Captain Mark Giordano has been the top threat of late from the blue line with four goals and eight assists to go along with a plus-5 rating over his last nine contests.
                  OVERTIME
                  1. San Jose captain Joe Pavelski has scored three goals in his last four games and a team-leading 21 on the season.
                  2. Calgary G Karri Ramo has allowed a total of three goals in his last three contests and defeated the Sharks 4-2 on Dec. 8.

                    Preview: Florida at Vancouver
When: 10:00 PM ET, Monday, January 11, 2016
Where: Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia
The Florida Panthers have become one of the surprise stories of the 2015-16 season, and they hope to write another chapter as they attempt to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 13 games when they visit the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. Florida has climbed to the top of the Atlantic Division thanks to its run, which reached 12 contests with Sunday’s 2-1 triumph at Edmonton — the team’s third win in as many contests during its six-game road trip.
Jaromir Jagr has registered six goals and 10 points on the winning streak to raise his team-leading totals to 15 and 31. Vancouver looks to conclude its seven-game homestand on a winning note after going 3-2-1 over the first six contests — five of which were one-goal decisions, with two being decided in overtime and one in a shootout. Daniel Sedin leads the Canucks with 17 goals but has scored just one in his last six games. Florida hopes to sweep the two-game season series after posting a 5-4 shootout victory over Vancouver on Dec. 20 in which Jagr recorded a goal and an assist before Aleksander Barkov netted the decisive tally in the bonus format.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)
ABOUT THE PANTHERS (26-12-4): Roberto Luongo will be back in net Monday after receiving the night off against the Oilers. The 36-year-old is riding a personal nine-game winning streak during which he has allowed fewer than three goals eight times. Jonathan Huberdeau has remained hot, recording five points during his last three games and five multipoint performances in nine contests.
ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-16-10): Sedin, who already is the franchise leader in both power-play tallies (120) and game-winners (76), needs three goals to pass Markus Naslund (346) for the top spot in that category. Chris Higgins’ time in Vancouver could be nearing an end as the team announced it is seeking a deal. “I can confirm we’re exploring trade options for Chris Higgins so we can create more roster space for our younger players to develop,” general manager Jim Benning told the team’s website. “Chris is a quality person who has been an important member of our team for nearly five seasons. Our focus has been on finding a positive new situation for him, and we will continue to do so.”
                    OVERTIME
                    1. The Panthers, who haven’t lost since Dec. 12 at Boston, have won a franchise-high six straight road contests.
                    2. Higgins has recorded only two goals and one assist in 25 games this season.
                    3. Barkov is riding a four-game point streak and has collected nine during his last seven contests.
                    PREDICTION: Panthers 3, Canucks 1

                      Preview: Detroit at Los Angeles
When: 10:30 PM ET, Monday, January 11, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
The Detroit Red Wings look to remain perfect on their six-game road trip when they visit the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings on Monday. After ending December with three straight losses, Detroit has begun 2016 by posting one-goal victories in each of the first four games of its trek — including a 2-1 triumph at Anaheim on Sunday in which Riley Sheahan snapped a tie with 3:44 remaining in the third period.
Tomas Tatar added his 13th goal to pull into a tie with Justin Abdelkader for second on the team, one behind rookie Dylan Larkin. Los Angeles split the first two contests of its four-game homestand, edging Toronto 2-1 on Thursday while falling to St. Louis in a shootout by the same score two days later. Anze Kopitar remained hot, scoring the lone goal against the Blues to give him 11 points in his last eight games and at least one in 18 of his past 23 contests. Detroit will attempt to complete a sweep of the two-game season series after posting a 3-2 home triumph over the Kings on Nov. 20, when Larkin scored one of his team-leading four game-winning goals.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, FSN Detroit, FSN West (Los Angeles)
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (22-13-7): Larkin notched an assist Sunday to extend his point streak to a season high-tying five games and move one point ahead of Arizona’s Max Domi for second in the league among rookies. The 19-year-old, who trails Chicago’s Artemi Panarin by 10 for the league lead, also began the campaign — and his NHL career — with points in five straight games. Petr Mrazek has won each of the first four games of the road trip, allowing a total of five goals and only two over the last three contests.
ABOUT THE KINGS (26-12-3): Jonathan Quick has been terrific of late, going 6-0-1 during his last seven games while allowing fewer than two goals in five of those contests. The 29-year-old remains one shutout away from passing John Vanbiesbrouck and Frank Brimsek and becoming the all-time leader among American-born goaltenders with 41. Tyler Toffoli leads Los Angeles with 19 goals but has scored just one in his last five games.
                      OVERTIME
                      1. Red Wings D Jakub Kindl cleared waivers Sunday and likely will be assigned to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
                      2. Los Angeles C Jeff Carter netted both of his club’s tallies in its first meeting with the Red Wings this season.
                      3. Detroit has scored a total of five goals in its last three contests.
PREDICTION: Kings 4, Red Wings 2

We had been posting it in the comp thread mixed in with everything else.
But I figured it was better to post this stuff in each of the sport forums on here and your post proved it was the right move.
                          Thanks for the reply.
