Alex Ovechkin hopes to continue his march toward 500 goals when the NHL-leading Washington Capitals wrap up a five-game road trip with a visit to the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon. Ovechkin scored his 497th goal to help the Capitals become the first team to reach 30 wins for the season with a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday.
While Ovechkin is bidding to become the 43rd player to reach the 500 goals, Braden Holtby is also approaching an impressive streak. Holtby is on a personal 18-0-2 tear and can become the first goaltender to earn a point in 21 straight decisions since Roberto Luongo (16-0-5) with Vancouver in 2010-11. The Rangers are coming off an impressive 6-2 thumping of Western Conference-leading Dallas and are seeking back-to-back victories for the first time since Nov. 21-23. ABOUT THE CAPITALS (30-7-3): Holtby, who turned aside 34 shots Thursday to post his league-high 26th victory, has not lost in regulation since a 1-0 setback to Detroit on Nov. 10. “He wants to be in the net every night. I think he gets mad when I pull him out of there, but he’s a workhorse,” Washington coach Barry Trotz said. “The more he plays, the better he tracks the puck. He’s had a wonderful first 40 games; hopefully we can continue that in the second 40.” The Capitals will be without forward Marcus Johansson, who was suspended two games Friday for an illegal check to the head of the Islanders’ Thomas Hickey.
ABOUT THE RANGERS (22-14-4): Former first-round draft pick Emerson Etem’s tenure with New York lasted less than half a season as he was dealt to Vancouver on Friday in exchange for forward Nicklas Jensen – another first-round selection – and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 draft. Jensen, who has three goals and three assists in 24 career NHL games, has appeared in 27 games with Utica of the American Hockey League this season and notched four tallies and 12 points. “(Jensen) has a nice skill package; he can skate, has good hands, has good hockey sense,” Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton said.

Claude Giroux notched an assist in Thursday’s victory versus the Wild for just his second point in nine games, but scored two goals and set up another in two losses to the Islanders this season. The captain traditionally has torched New York, collecting 40 points (13 goals and 27 assists) in 35 career meetings. Frans Nielsen has fared pretty well against Philadelphia in his own right, scoring three goals, including two in New York’s 4-3 shootout win on Dec. 8. The 31-year-old Dane had recorded two goals and three assists during a four-game point streak before being held off the scoresheet in the Islanders’ 4-1 setback to red-hot Washington on Thursday.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (22-14-5): New York’s defensemen are taking a beating of late as Travis Hamonic is nursing a foot injury while Johnny Boychuk is sidelined with an upper-body ailment. To make matters worse, blue-liner Thomas Hickey was on the wrong end of an illegal check by Marcus Johansson, resulting in a headache for the former and a two-game suspension for the latter. The Islanders reached out to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Friday and recalled Scot Mayfield to provide depth for coach Jack Capuano’s charges.
ABOUT THE FLYERS (17-15-7): Promising rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been ruled out of Saturday’s contest due to a lower-body injury suffered against the Wild. The Flyers embraced having the 22-year-old in the lineup, as the team posted a 12-7-3 mark and averaged 2.48 goals per contest with him as opposed to a 5-8-0 mark and 1.80 output without him. Gostisbehere had scored the team’s first three overtime goals by a defenseman before Michael Del Zotto added his second tally of Thursday’s contest in the extra session.

The Sharks launched a 36-shot barrage against Detroit on Thursday but came away with a frustrating 2-1 loss. “That’s the way things are going right now,” San Jose coach Pete DeBoer said. “We have to be resilient and know that if we play that way over the long term, that we’ll be all right.” The Maple Leafs had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Goaltender James Reimer, making his first start in more than a month, had 39 saves in his return.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (16-16-7): Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who was winless in his first 11 decisions (0-8-3) after an overtime loss against San Jose on Dec. 17, continued his turnaround with a 4-0 shutout of Anaheim on Wednesday. Bernier has won six of eight since and will carry a three-start winning streak into Saturday’s rematch against the Sharks. “In general he appears more confident in net,” Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “He’s playing the puck better, he’s talking to guys on the ice more, he’s just more comfortable. That really goes a long way.”
ABOUT THE SHARKS (18-18-2): With his team off to the second-worst 17-game start at home in franchise history, DeBoer made some lineup changes Friday, moving slumping Tomas Hertl on the top unit with captain Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. “I think it’s time, we’re at the point of the season where we need some production. Not just Tomas Hertl, but a lot of those guys,” DeBoer said. “We’re at the point of the season now where if you’re getting 12, 14, 15 minutes a night, we need some production and the good teams get that.” Hertl has only one goal and three assists in his last 14 games.

I feel like the last few weeks down there (Iowa of the American Hockey League) have been a lot better. I’m feeling like myself.” Fellow defenseman Marco Scandella is expected to play on Saturday despite taking an awkward fall into the boards versus the Flyers that ultimately led to a goal.
ABOUT THE STARS (29-10-4): Patrick Sharp, who notched an assist versus the Jets, has scored six goals and set up eight others during his career-high 11-game point streak. Ryan Johansen needed only 2 minutes, 35 seconds to score his first goal in a Nashville sweater but hopes his next one leads to a better result as the Predators try for their seventh straight victory over Arizona when they visit the Coyotes on Saturday. Nashville fell to Colorado 5-3 on Friday – dropping the Predators into a tie with the Avalanche for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference – in the opener of its four-game road trip.
“It’s definitely nice to get something early like that,” Johansen, who was acquired in a trade with Columbus for defenseman Seth Jones on Wednesday, told reporters after Friday’s loss. “Hopefully, I can use that as some confidence and move forward in shooting the puck. It’s too bad we couldn’t find a way to win this one. It would have been a lot cooler.” Arizona has won as many as it has lost through 40 games and has a firm grip on second place in the Pacific Division, 10 points behind runaway leader Los Angeles. A big reason has been the play of goaltender Louis Domingue, who is 5-0-2 with a 1.97 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in seven starts since being called up from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Nov. 23. “What Louis has done is as big of a surprise as we’ve had around here in years,” Coyotes general manager Don Maloney told the team’s website.

Johansen, who has seven goals in 2015-16 after scoring 59 in the previous two campaigns, has 96 assists in the last two-plus seasons after recording one Friday and could be the playmaker that Neal needs to approach his career-high 40-goal effort in 2011-12. Filip Forsberg scored Friday for his fourth goal in the last seven games and tallied twice in Nashville’s 5-2 victory over Arizona on Dec. 1.

Third-leading scorer Jannik Hansen suffered an upper-body injury in the 3-2 win over Carolina on Wednesday and missed Friday’s practice while top-pair defenseman Dan Hamhuis (jaw) and key center Brandon Sutter (hernia) remain out indefinitely. Bo Horvat has stepped up with three goals in his last two games after producing just two in the first 39 contests this season but owns a club-worst minus-19 rating. Jacob Markstrom has gone 4-2-0 in place of Ryan Miller (groin), who could be back in the lineup soon after participating in Friday’s practice.

The Blues could be without three key players when they face the Kings as goaltender Jake Allen, defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and Paul Stastny all exited Friday’s defeat with injuries. Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles continues its four-game homestand that began Thursday with a 2-1 triumph over Toronto. Vincent Lecavalier notched an assist in his debut with the Kings after being acquired from Philadelphia while Jeff Carter — another former Flyer — returned from a five-game absence because of an upper-body injury to score the winning goal. Carter also netted the winning tally Nov. 3 and Jhonas Enroth made 24 saves as Los Angeles blanked the Blues 3-0 in St. Louis.

Allen appeared to injure his knee in a collision with Corey Perry early in the second and finally left the game seven minutes into the session. Vladimir Tarasenko recorded two goals and two assists during his three-game point streak before being blanked Friday.
ABOUT THE KINGS (26-12-2): Jonathan Quick is riding a six-game winning streak during which he has posted a 1.33 goals-against average and .955 save percentage. On Thursday, the 29-year-old came within 9:55 of recording his 41st career shutout, which would move him past Frank Brimsek and John Vanbiesbrouck for most among American-born goaltenders. Defenseman Luke Schenn also made his debut Thursday after coming over in the deal with Lecavalier, recording three shots and two penalty minutes in 15:59 of ice time.
