      Preview: Washington at NY Rangers

When: 1:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
Alex Ovechkin hopes to continue his march toward 500 goals when the NHL-leading Washington Capitals wrap up a five-game road trip with a visit to the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon. Ovechkin scored his 497th goal to help the Capitals become the first team to reach 30 wins for the season with a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday.
While Ovechkin is bidding to become the 43rd player to reach the 500 goals, Braden Holtby is also approaching an impressive streak. Holtby is on a personal 18-0-2 tear and can become the first goaltender to earn a point in 21 straight decisions since Roberto Luongo (16-0-5) with Vancouver in 2010-11. The Rangers are coming off an impressive 6-2 thumping of Western Conference-leading Dallas and are seeking back-to-back victories for the first time since Nov. 21-23. The teams have split two games at Madison Square Garden this season, with New York posting a 5-2 win over Nov. 3 and Washington romping 7-3 in the rematch on Dec. 20.
TV: 1 p.m. ET, CSN Washington, MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE CAPITALS (30-7-3): Holtby, who turned aside 34 shots Thursday to post his league-high 26th victory, has not lost in regulation since a 1-0 setback to Detroit on Nov. 10. “He wants to be in the net every night. I think he gets mad when I pull him out of there, but he’s a workhorse,” Washington coach Barry Trotz said. “The more he plays, the better he tracks the puck. He’s had a wonderful first 40 games; hopefully we can continue that in the second 40.” The Capitals will be without forward Marcus Johansson, who was suspended two games Friday for an illegal check to the head of the Islanders’ Thomas Hickey.
ABOUT THE RANGERS (22-14-4): Former first-round draft pick Emerson Etem’s tenure with New York lasted less than half a season as he was dealt to Vancouver on Friday in exchange for forward Nicklas Jensen – another first-round selection – and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 draft. Jensen, who has three goals and three assists in 24 career NHL games, has appeared in 27 games with Utica of the American Hockey League this season and notched four tallies and 12 points. “(Jensen) has a nice skill package; he can skate, has good hands, has good hockey sense,” Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton said.
      OVERTIME
      1. Ovechkin will play in his 800th career game Saturday.
      2. Rangers F Chris Kreider will sit out his second straight game due to a laceration on his hand.
      3. C Mike Richards, signed by the Capitals on Wednesday, practiced Friday but will not be in the lineup for Saturday’s game.
      PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Capitals 2

        Preview: NY Islanders at Philadelphia
When: 1:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Philadelphia Flyers have ignited their dormant offense over the last two games and could be in for some more good fortune on Saturday afternoon when they open a three-game homestand against the Metropolitan Division-rival New York Islanders. After mustering just five goals during a fruitless three-game trek through California, the Flyers have recorded consecutive 4-3 wins over Montreal and Minnesota.
Claude Giroux notched an assist in Thursday’s victory versus the Wild for just his second point in nine games, but scored two goals and set up another in two losses to the Islanders this season. The captain traditionally has torched New York, collecting 40 points (13 goals and 27 assists) in 35 career meetings. Frans Nielsen has fared pretty well against Philadelphia in his own right, scoring three goals, including two in New York’s 4-3 shootout win on Dec. 8. The 31-year-old Dane had recorded two goals and three assists during a four-game point streak before being held off the scoresheet in the Islanders’ 4-1 setback to red-hot Washington on Thursday.
TV: 1 p.m. ET, MSG-Plus (New York), CSN Philadelphia
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (22-14-5): New York’s defensemen are taking a beating of late as Travis Hamonic is nursing a foot injury while Johnny Boychuk is sidelined with an upper-body ailment. To make matters worse, blue-liner Thomas Hickey was on the wrong end of an illegal check by Marcus Johansson, resulting in a headache for the former and a two-game suspension for the latter. The Islanders reached out to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Friday and recalled Scot Mayfield to provide depth for coach Jack Capuano’s charges.
ABOUT THE FLYERS (17-15-7): Promising rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been ruled out of Saturday’s contest due to a lower-body injury suffered against the Wild. The Flyers embraced having the 22-year-old in the lineup, as the team posted a 12-7-3 mark and averaged 2.48 goals per contest with him as opposed to a 5-8-0 mark and 1.80 output without him. Gostisbehere had scored the team’s first three overtime goals by a defenseman before Michael Del Zotto added his second tally of Thursday’s contest in the extra session.
        OVERTIME
        1. New York RW Kyle Okposo, who sat out Friday’s practice with an illness, recorded a goal and an assist in two meetings with Philadelphia this season.
        2. The Flyers’ 2.21 goals per contest is good enough for 29th place in the league, just ahead of Anaheim.
        3. Islanders G Jaroslav Halak improved to 9-3-0 in his career versus Philadelphia after turning aside 60-of-64 shots in two meetings this season.
        PREDICTION: Islanders 4, Flyers 3

          Preview: Pittsburgh at Montreal
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
          Where: Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec
After dropping a home-and-home series, the Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they visit the Montreal Canadiens. The Bell Centre has been a safe haven for the Penguins, who have won two straight there and own a 5-1-1 mark in their last seven visits.
Quebec native Marc-Andre Fleury has made himself at home in Montreal, stopping 54-of-55 shots to post a 2-0-0 mark last season and is 6-1-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in his last eight starts at the Bell Centre. Rookie Mike Condon will attempt to win his fourth straight start for the Canadiens, who opened a three-game homestand with a 2-1 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday. “It’s time for us to play the right way for a couple of games in a row now. It hasn’t been the case as of late,” captain Max Pacioretty said. “We played a good, strong game last game and we’ve got to build off that and play the right way against Pittsburgh.”
TV: 7 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), CBC, TVA (Montreal)
ABOUT THE PENGUINS (19-16-5): Captain Sidney Crosby collected six goals and six assists during an eight-game stretch before he was held off the scoresheet in a 3-1 setback to the Blackhawks on Wednesday. The two-time Hart Trophy winner notched a pair of assists in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win over Montreal on Nov. 11 and has 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists) in 30 career contests against the Canadiens. Pittsburgh’s special teams play has been downright stellar, as it is 10-for-28 (35.7 percent) on the power play in the last nine games while thwarting all 20 short-handed situations in the last eight.
ABOUT THE CANADIENS (23-16-3): Reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Carey Price isn’t expected to return to the lineup until February, coach Michel Therrien told reporters on Friday. “It would surprise us if he was back before the All-Star Game (Jan. 31),” Therrien said. “We said it would be a minimum of six weeks – a long-term absence. … We have to follow the rehabilitation process and they tell me it’s going well.” Montreal has struggled to tread water in his absence, posting a 6-12-1 mark to fall out of first place in the Atlantic Division.
          OVERTIME
          1. Pittsburgh C Evgeni Malkin has two goals and six assists during a five-game point streak in Montreal.
          2. Canadiens’ Greg Pateryn will draw into the lineup in place of fellow D Jeff Petry, who is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
          3. Penguins D Kris Letang has scored three goals and set up six others during his four-game point streak.
          PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Canadiens 2

            Preview: Boston at Ottawa
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: Canadian Tire Centre, Ottawa, Ontario
The Boston Bruins look to build on the 3,000th victory in franchise history when they continue their five-game road trip against the Atlantic Division-rival Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Boston began its trek with a 4-1 triumph at New Jersey on Friday after dropping its first two games of the month – both at home – as Ryan Spooner and defenseman Colin Miller helped the team overcome some key absences on offense by notching a goal and an assist apiece.
Brad Marchand, who is tied for the club lead in goals with 15, returns to the lineup Saturday after serving a three-game suspension for clipping while David Krejci could miss his fifth straight contest with an upper-body injury. Ottawa hopes to recover from becoming Florida’s 11th consecutive victim Thursday as it dropped a 3-2 decision for its fourth loss in five games. The Senators can carry a few positives into Saturday’s showdown as it allowed a season-low 16 shots while Milan Michalek returned from a lengthy injury absence to score his first goal since Nov. 24. Boston and Ottawa are meeting for the third time in less than two weeks as the clubs split a home-and-home series as December came to a close.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), CITY, TVA2 (Ottawa)
ABOUT THE BRUINS (21-14-4): Jimmy Hayes is one goal away from reaching double digits for the third straight season after tallying against New Jersey on Friday. The 26-year-old Boston native registered his first career hat trick in the Bruins’ 7-3 home victory over Ottawa on Dec. 29. Tuukka Rask is expected back in the crease versus the Senators after Jonas Gustavsson continued his mastery over the Devils on Friday.
ABOUT THE SENATORS (19-16-6): Michalek’s appearance against Florida was his first since Dec. 1 as he missed 16 games with a broken finger. captain Erik Karlsson leads the team with 43 points and has recorded at least one in nine of his last 11 contests. Mark Stone (10) and Mika Zibanejad have combined for 17 goals this season, with four (two apiece) coming against Boston.
            OVERTIME
            1. With their milestone win Friday, the Bruins are second to Montreal (3,283) in all-time NHL victories.
            2. Ottawa C Kyle Turris is tied for second on the team with 13 goals but is in the midst of a 10-game drought.
            3. Claude Julien will coach his 900th game for Boston on Saturday.
            PREDICTION: Senators 3, Bruins 2

              Preview: Carolina at Columbus
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
              Where: Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio
Defenseman Seth Jones makes his home debut for the Columbus Blue Jackets when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday in the back end of a home-and-home series. Jones, who was acquired from Nashville in the blockbuster trade for center Ryan Johansen on Wednesday, logged 22:12 of ice time and was a minus-2 with one shot on in Columbus’ 4-1 loss at Carolina on Friday.
“I don’t want to put any expectations on him,” Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella told the Columbus Dispatch. “You can see his skill level, and he was very well-coached with some good players around him in Nashville. I’m not going to go too far into critiquing him. I just want to see him play.” The Hurricanes got 35 saves from Cam Ward as they earned a point for the sixth time in eight games (4-2-2). Elias Lindholm recorded his first multi-goal performance of the season with a pair against Columbus while second-leading scorer Victor Rask sat out due to an upper-body injury. Jordan Staal scored the Hurricanes’ first power-play goal in nine games to open the scoring Friday.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, FSN Ohio (Columbus)
ABOUT THE HURRICANES (17-18-7): Rask (26 points), who trails only defenseman Justin Faulk (30) on the team in scoring, took the pregame skate but was scratched Friday. Faulk was kept off the scoresheet despite registering six shots, but Kris Versteeg chipped in with a pair of assists while captain Eric Staal and leading goal scorer Jeff Skinner (15) each notched one. Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin recorded an assist for the second straight game and posted a plus-2 rating Friday.
ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (15-24-3): Captain Nick Foligno extended his point streak to eight games with an assist Friday before taking a blindside hit from Brad Malone early in the third period and leaving the game. Foligno, tied for third on the team with 25 points, is likely to miss Saturday’s contest after posting two goals and eight assists during his streak. Scott Hartnell (30 points) and All-Star Brandon Saad (29) were held without a point Friday while Brandon Dubinsky scored a goal for his fifth point in four games.
              OVERTIME
              1. The Hurricanes are 6-0-2 in their last eight meetings with the Blue Jackets and have won three in a row in Columbus.
              2. Columbus G Anton Forsberg made his second straight start Friday, which could mean Joonas Korpisalo will get the nod on Saturday.
              3. Carolina’s Jordan Staal has produced back-to-back multi-point efforts for the first time this season.
              PREDICTION: Columbus 4, Hurricanes 2

                Preview: Toronto at San Jose
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: SAP Center at San Jose, San Jose, California
The San Jose Sharks are wrapping up a five-game homestand, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing given the team’s startling inability to win at SAP Center. San Jose has dropped two in a row and three of four to fall to a league-worst 5-12-0 at home as they prepare to host the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are concluding a three-game California road trip.
The Sharks launched a 36-shot barrage against Detroit on Thursday but came away with a frustrating 2-1 loss. “That’s the way things are going right now,” San Jose coach Pete DeBoer said. “We have to be resilient and know that if we play that way over the long term, that we’ll be all right.” The Maple Leafs had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Goaltender James Reimer, making his first start in more than a month, had 39 saves in his return.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBC, CSN California (San Jose)
ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (16-16-7): Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who was winless in his first 11 decisions (0-8-3) after an overtime loss against San Jose on Dec. 17, continued his turnaround with a 4-0 shutout of Anaheim on Wednesday. Bernier has won six of eight since and will carry a three-start winning streak into Saturday’s rematch against the Sharks. “In general he appears more confident in net,” Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “He’s playing the puck better, he’s talking to guys on the ice more, he’s just more comfortable. That really goes a long way.”
ABOUT THE SHARKS (18-18-2): With his team off to the second-worst 17-game start at home in franchise history, DeBoer made some lineup changes Friday, moving slumping Tomas Hertl on the top unit with captain Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. “I think it’s time, we’re at the point of the season where we need some production. Not just Tomas Hertl, but a lot of those guys,” DeBoer said. “We’re at the point of the season now where if you’re getting 12, 14, 15 minutes a night, we need some production and the good teams get that.” Hertl has only one goal and three assists in his last 14 games.
                OVERTIME
                1. San Jose is 0-11-0 at home this season when allowing the first goal.
                2. The Maple Leafs are 2-for-23 on the power play over the past six games.
                3. Pavelski has six goals and six assists in 12 games versus Toronto.
PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Maple Leafs 2

                  Preview: Minnesota at Dallas
When: 8:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
With the Dallas Stars enjoying their best start in the franchise’s 49-year history, general manager Jim Nill was rewarded for his shrewd moves with a five-year contract extension on Friday. Nill’s Western Conference-leading Stars look to continue their good fortune as they vie for their second straight victory over a Central Division rival on Saturday when they host the Minnesota Wild.
Tyler Seguin, who was acquired from Boston in Nill’s first offseason at the helm, matched captain Jamie Benn with his team-leading 24th goal and tallied in the shootout of Dallas’ 2-1 victory over Winnipeg on Thursday. “It wasn’t our best game, but the guys found a way to win,” Seguin told reporters. “We’re going to be happy with that.” Minnesota hasn’t been happy since winning three of four to end 2015, as it began the new year with a 1-1-2 mark following a 4-3 overtime loss to Philadelphia on Thursday. Zach Parise has enjoyed a strong start to January with four goals in his last two games, but was held off the scoresheet in his two meetings with Dallas this season.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Southwest (Dallas)
ABOUT THE WILD (21-11-8): Mike Reilly is in line to make his NHL debut with fellow defenseman Nate Prosser (hand) likely to miss his third straight game. “I don’t know for sure if I’m in, but there seems like a really good chance,” Reilly told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “I’ve been working hard for this. I feel like the last few weeks down there (Iowa of the American Hockey League) have been a lot better. I’m feeling like myself.” Fellow defenseman Marco Scandella is expected to play on Saturday despite taking an awkward fall into the boards versus the Flyers that ultimately led to a goal.
ABOUT THE STARS (29-10-4): Patrick Sharp, who notched an assist versus the Jets, has scored six goals and set up eight others during his career-high 11-game point streak. Benn is trending in the other direction, as he has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last four contests. The reigning Art Ross Trophy winner has torched Minnesota for two goals and four assists this season and 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 24 career meetings.
                  OVERTIME
                  1. Dallas leads the league by averaging 3.40 goals per game.
                  2. Minnesota veteran LW Thomas Vanek has two goals and five assists in his last 18 contests.
                  3. The Stars have won five in a row at home and their 17 victories at American Airlines Center equal their total from last season.

                    Preview: Nashville at Arizona
When: 9:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona
Ryan Johansen needed only 2 minutes, 35 seconds to score his first goal in a Nashville sweater but hopes his next one leads to a better result as the Predators try for their seventh straight victory over Arizona when they visit the Coyotes on Saturday. Nashville fell to Colorado 5-3 on Friday – dropping the Predators into a tie with the Avalanche for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference – in the opener of its four-game road trip.
“It’s definitely nice to get something early like that,” Johansen, who was acquired in a trade with Columbus for defenseman Seth Jones on Wednesday, told reporters after Friday’s loss. “Hopefully, I can use that as some confidence and move forward in shooting the puck. It’s too bad we couldn’t find a way to win this one. It would have been a lot cooler.” Arizona has won as many as it has lost through 40 games and has a firm grip on second place in the Pacific Division, 10 points behind runaway leader Los Angeles. A big reason has been the play of goaltender Louis Domingue, who is 5-0-2 with a 1.97 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in seven starts since being called up from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Nov. 23. “What Louis has done is as big of a surprise as we’ve had around here in years,” Coyotes general manager Don Maloney told the team’s website.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (19-15-7): Johansen, who centered a line with right wing James Neal (team-best 15 goals) and Colin Wilson, scored his first goal since Nov. 28 – a span of 15 games – as a change of scenery provided a spark. Johansen, who has seven goals in 2015-16 after scoring 59 in the previous two campaigns, has 96 assists in the last two-plus seasons after recording one Friday and could be the playmaker that Neal needs to approach his career-high 40-goal effort in 2011-12. Filip Forsberg scored Friday for his fourth goal in the last seven games and tallied twice in Nashville’s 5-2 victory over Arizona on Dec. 1.
ABOUT THE COYOTES (20-16-4): At age 39, captain Shane Doan has discovered the Fountain of Youth in his 20th NHL season, scoring seven of his 15 goals in the last five games to put him on pace for a career-high 35, which would give him 403 for his career. Anthony Duclair (11 goals) and Max Domi (10) – a pair of 20-year-olds – are fourth and tied for fifth in goals, respectively, among NHL rookies. Mikkel Boedker has team bests of 31 points and 19 assists but is a club-worst minus-15.
                    OVERTIME
                    1. Arizona has allowed one power-play goal in each of its last three games while Nashville is 1-for-15 with the man advantage over its last five contests.
                    2. The Predators have been outscored 20-7 in going 0-4-1 in the second contest of back-to-back games this season.
                    3. Nashville is 1-3-1 in its last five games and 1-4-1 over its last six road contests.
                    PREDICTION: Coyotes 3, Predators 2

The Canucks have earned points in six of their last eight games (5-2-1) as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday with another key player expected to sit out.
Third-leading scorer Jannik Hansen suffered an upper-body injury in the 3-2 win over Carolina on Wednesday and missed Friday’s practice while top-pair defenseman Dan Hamhuis (jaw) and key center Brandon Sutter (hernia) remain out indefinitely. The Lightning arrive after rallying for three goals in the third period that each went in off opposing players to beat Edmonton 3-2 on Friday. “The thing that stuck out to me tonight was our compete,” Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos told reporters. “I certainly felt our group responded to the challenge.” The Lightning won each of their last three visits to Vancouver but dropped to 2-1 decision to Canucks at home on Dec. 22.

Stamkos has tallied in back-to-back contests to push his team-high total to 18 and owns eight goals and 14 points in eight career contests against the Canucks. While Ben Bishop notched his 16th win Friday with 24 saves, backup Andrei Vasilevskiy could get the start Saturday after winning his last outing against Minnesota on Jan. 2.

Alex Burrows reportedly skated with the team’s leading scorers – Daniel Sedin (17 goals, 38 points) and twin brother Henrik (25 assists, 34 points) – at practice Friday in place of Hansen (22 points). Bo Horvat has stepped up with three goals in his last two games after producing just two in the first 39 contests this season but owns a club-worst minus-19 rating. Jacob Markstrom has gone 4-2-0 in place of Ryan Miller (groin), who could be back in the lineup soon after participating in Friday’s practice.

                      1. The Canucks acquired speedy RW Emerson Etem from the New York Rangers on Friday for RW Nicklas Jensen in a trade of former first-round picks.
                      2. Tampa Bay RW Nikita Kucherov recorded a goal Friday and has posted at least one point (13 overall) in nine of his last 10 games.

Preview: St. Louis at Los Angeles
When: 10:30 PM ET, Saturday, January 9, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
The St. Louis Blues attempt to end their recent struggles as they wrap up their three-game road trip against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. St. Louis’ winless streak reached five games (0-2-3) on Friday as it squandered a two-goal lead before dropping a 4-3 decision at Anaheim in a shootout.
The Blues could be without three key players when they face the Kings as goaltender Jake Allen, defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and Paul Stastny all exited Friday’s defeat with injuries. Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles continues its four-game homestand that began Thursday with a 2-1 triumph over Toronto. Vincent Lecavalier notched an assist in his debut with the Kings after being acquired from Philadelphia while Jeff Carter — another former Flyer — returned from a five-game absence because of an upper-body injury to score the winning goal. Carter also netted the winning tally Nov. 3 and Jhonas Enroth made 24 saves as Los Angeles blanked the Blues 3-0 in St. Louis.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN West (Los Angeles)
ABOUT THE BLUES (23-14-7): Stastny was the first to leave Friday’s contest, exiting with six minutes remaining in the first period after taking a puck off his head, while Bouwmeester departed 36 seconds later after being drilled into the boards by Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf. Allen appeared to injure his knee in a collision with Corey Perry early in the second and finally left the game seven minutes into the session. Vladimir Tarasenko recorded two goals and two assists during his three-game point streak before being blanked Friday.
ABOUT THE KINGS (26-12-2): Jonathan Quick is riding a six-game winning streak during which he has posted a 1.33 goals-against average and .955 save percentage. On Thursday, the 29-year-old came within 9:55 of recording his 41st career shutout, which would move him past Frank Brimsek and John Vanbiesbrouck for most among American-born goaltenders. Defenseman Luke Schenn also made his debut Thursday after coming over in the deal with Lecavalier, recording three shots and two penalty minutes in 15:59 of ice time.
                        OVERTIME
                        1. Carter’s next goal will be his 100th as a member of the Kings.
                        2. Blues C Patrik Berglund needs one point to become the second Swede in team history to reach 250 for his career (Jorgen Petersson, 332).
                        3. Los Angeles has won six consecutive home meetings with St. Louis since losing March 17, 2011.
                        PREDICTION: Kings 4, Blues 2
