At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey
In addition to the reappearance of 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome at Santa Anita on Saturday, the first Road to the Kentucky Derby points race is on tap.
A field of nine will line up in the $100,000 Sham (G3) at one mile on the main track. There are 10-4-2-1 Derby points up for grabs.
Trainer Bob Baffert will send out the morning line favorite Collected (3-1). The colt ran second in the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) at Del Mar going a mile on turf. He came up 1 ¼ lengths short behind Dressed in Hermes, who is the 7-2 second choice on the morning line.
Dressed in Hermes has won a pair of stakes, both on turf. His lone go on dirt was in his debut where he was beaten 5 ¾ lengths in a fourth place finish back in July at Del Mar.
Rare Candy (6-1) also exits the DeMille where the colt checked in fourth. With three coming off turf efforts and a chance of a wet track, it makes for a tricky betting race.
Trainer Doug O’Neill will saddle three runners in the race- Found Money (6-1) who won the King Glorious in his last outing, Semper Fortis (8-1), who beat optional claimers last out and Sorryaboutnothing (15-1) was seventh in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1).
Here is today’s opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:
GP Race 1 Clm $20,000 (12:35 ET)
2 Behzad's Pride 7-2
4 Title Fight 6-1
3 Indiana Cowboy 5-2
1 Alex the Dude 8-1
Analysis: Behzad's Pride drops out of Alw-1 heats and fits well in this spot for a $20,000 tag. The gelding has beaten $35,000 claimers and was claimed out of that race by the current connections who tried him versus tougher to no avail. Both of his wins have come over the main track here and he gets a jock upgrade to Lopez.
Title Fight stalked the early pace and made a mild late rally to finish third last out for this tag. The winner Flashing Light came back to beat $12,500 claimers in his next outing on Jan. 6. He broke his maiden over the main track here for a $50,000 tag in his debut back in July but his speed figs are on the light side. He does pick up Castellano and worth tossing in the mix if he goes off near his 6-1 morning line.
Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 2,4 / 1,2,3,4
TRI: 2,4 / 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4,6
Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:
GP 9 OClm $25,000N1X (4:35 ET)
4 Tiztalented 7-2
1 Dea 5-1
3 Indian Starlight 4-1
5 Mata Mua 6-1
Analysis: Tiztalented stalked the early pace and did not have enough punch left in the stretch, weakening to finish fifth last out at 1 3/8 miles at the Big A in her first start against winners. She broke her maiden two back at that same distance at the Spa in a good looking effort. This gal is bred to be a good one and can handle this distance. She is by Tiznow out of the stakes winner Untouched Talent ($243,550) who has dropped three other winners including stakes winner Bodemeister ($1.3 million).
Dea tracked the early pace, battled on in the stretch and then weakened to finish sixth last out here over ground labeled as good. The filly looks primed for a top effort here in her third start off the layoff for the Casse barn. The extra ground here is the main question mark but she looks as if she still has some upside to her.
Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,4 / 1,3,4,5
TRI: 1,4 / 1,3,4,5 / 1,3,4,5,6
Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
Gulfrstream Park
