UFC Odds and Picks - UFC Fight Night 37

LAS VEGAS -- UFC Fight Night 37 from Macao, China, features a compelling fight in the welterweight division between Dong Hyun Kim and John Hathaway. Kim, known as "Stun Gun" by most fight fans, is a -360 favorite, with Hathaway getting odds of about +290 on the takeback.

Both fighters could really use a win here to climb back up the ladder in the 170-pound division.

Kim (18-2-1) is a deserving favorite in this fight with his relentless style that keeps most of his opponents on their heels. Kim was rolling along in the welterweight division before suffering the first loss of his career when he was caught with a flying knee from Carlos Condit back in 2011. In retrospect, there is no shame in a loss to Condit, who has since become a mainstay at the top of the division.

For betting purposes, it’s fair to toss out Kim’s other loss, to Demian Maia in July 2012, since he injured himself very early in the fight and was forced to retire in the first round. Since then, the Stun Gun has come back with three wins, including a decision over the always-tough Paulo Thiago in November 2012 and a beautiful second-round knockout over highly-regarded up-and-comer Erick Silva in his most-recent outing last October.

The fight can be viewed on UFC Fight Pass. Prelims start at 5:45 a.m. ET, with the main event scheduled for 8 a.m. ET.

The only loss on Hathaway’s resume was a very poor showing as big favorite in a one-sided fight with Mike Pyle in October 2010. Hathaway (17-1) does have some nice wins over UFC veterans like Diego Sanchez (May 2010) and Ricky Story (June 2009), but just hasn’t consistently faced the level of competition Kim has.

Both fighters in this bout have a history of going to decisions, but Kim seems more equipped to win a decision than Hathaway with his relentless style and great takedowns. Stun Gun has a high-level ground game, and can significantly damage an opponent when he gets him of his feet.

This fight will probably go the distance and be decided by which fighter can do the best work in the grappling department. That favors Kim.

We just can’t make a case for Hathaway here, as this matchup doesn’t look good for him style-wise.

We’ll lay the favorite in what should be a fast-paced fight between two solid welterweights
