  • 2019 HOF Game info

    By: Ryan R. Bonini | July 25, 2019

Are you ready for some football? We sure are.

The Atlanta Falcons (0-0) and Denver Broncos (0-0) kick off the 2019 NFL preseason, meeting in the 2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio Thursday, Aug. 1, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Atlanta Falcons vs. Denver Broncos: Game preview, betting trends and notes

Remember, this is the FIRST game of the preseason: Don’t expect to see much out of starters or key role players from either team.
Just how little action? Last year, Falcons QB Matt Ryan attempted just two passes (one called back on penalty) in their first preseason game. Key starters were on the field for one drive that consisted of four plays, six yards and a punt. Look for the same playbook.
Both teams are coming off subpar seasons; the Falcons were 7-9, while Denver was 6-10.
Denver has a new face under center in Joe Flacco (Ravens). A cameo is likely, as the Broncos start figuring out QB2 – rookie Drew Lock, Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien are in the mix. The team hopes Lock is QB1 of the future, but new head coach Vic Fangio said Lock is “not a quarterback yet. He’s a hard-throwing pitcher that doesn’t know how to pitch yet.”

Denver was 6-9-1 ATS last season, while the Falcons were 5-11.

Denver was 3-13 over/under in 2018, while Atlanta was 9-7.

The Broncos have won four of their last five versus Atlanta.

The Broncos are 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games against NFC opponents and are 7-1 ATS against NFC South opponents in their last eight games.

The under is 6-1 for Atlanta in their past seven preseason games.

The total has gone under in all of the Broncos last nine games.

Last year, Atlanta scored 0 points vs. Jets, 14 vs. Chiefs, 6 vs. Jaguars and 7 vs. Dolphins in four preseason games.

The Broncos dropped 28 points vs. Vikings, 23 vs. Bears, 29 vs. Redskins and 21 vs. Cardinals in four preseason games last year.

The Hall of Fame Game, which is not a big deal to most folks but essentially a holiday for bettors, takes place on Aug. 1, with the Atlanta Falcons matching up against the Denver Broncos.

Atlanta opened as a 1-point favorite, but was quickly bet up to -2 within 15 minutes. An exhibition it may be, but clearly bettors were eager to get down some action.

There has since been buyback at some shops, with the line moving to -1.5.

In 13 Hall of Fame games that we’ve tracked via our Bet Labs data, the spread has closed below -4.5 every year. There are no glaring spread trends to speak of, with favorites going 5-5-3 against the spread (ATS).

The over/under opened at 34 and remains there. Historically, totals have ranged from 31.5 to 37, including back-to-back seasons at 34.5. Unders are 7-6 in those game.

Of the 13 games on file, an average of 33.7 points have been scored per game, though it’s been slightly lower at 32.4 over the past five years.

While the sample is small, The Action Network’s John Ewing notes that Falcons coach Dan Quinn has not been kind to bettors in preseason games, going 4-12 ATS.

Falcons Open as 1.5-Point Favorites Over Broncos in 2019 NFL Hall of Fame Game

By Chris Amberley in NFL Football — July 26, 2019 8:23 AM PDT

It’s hard to believe, but the return of the NFL is less than a week away. The Hall of Fame game kicks off the preseason schedule Thursday, August 1st, and oddsmakers have made the Atlanta Falcons a 1.5-point favorite over the Denver Broncos.

The total opened at 34, which is exceptionally low, and signals key starters on both sides likely won’t play many snaps if any at all. As a result, the advantage goes to the team with the most experience and depth on its second and third string units, especially at quarterback and on the offensive line.
Atlanta is the More Experienced Team

For the Falcons, Matt Schaub, a 14-year veteran, will see plenty of snaps as will Kurt Benkert who played in all four preseason games for Atlanta last year. The O-line is loaded with experienced players who will be very familiar with the Falcons scheme and that should go a long way in protecting their QBs and giving them time to run the offense successfully.

The Broncos meanwhile, will rely heavily on second round pick Drew Lock and a much less experienced crew of back-up linemen. Lock has shown flashes in camp, but live game speed is a much different beast. It won’t surprise anyone if he struggles to read the defense, and all it takes is one bad read to put Denver behind the eight ball early.

Atlanta is more experienced not only on the field, but off the field as well. Denver is breaking in a new head coach, with no previous head coaching experience, and a new offensive and defensive co-ordinator. A rocky start should be expected, which is another reason to back the Falcons as a short favorite.

Historically, Dan Quinn teams have struggled in the preseason going 4-12 against the spread, but Atlanta should be able to capitalize on an inexperienced Broncos team right out of the gate.
      Play the Under

One trend to note if thinking about playing the Hall of Fame game total, is the contest’s propensity to be low scoring. Defenses usually take less time than offenses to get on the same page, which explains why the average total in the last 13 Hall of Fame games is only 33.7.

Little read from Forbes (of all places) on the HOF game this year, here's the link if you want to see the video they talk about below

NFL Hall Of Fame Game 2019: Atlanta Falcons Vs. Denver Broncos Schedule, Odds For Preseason Opener
            Alex Kay

August is nearly here and with it comes the first meaningful NFL action in months. After a long offseason layoff, professional football finally returns with the 2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons, a Thursday night contest that will officially kick off the 2019 NFL preseason schedule. While the outcome for the teams on the field won’t matter in the slightest—organizations use this game mostly to evaluate fringe talent for training camp and roster cut purposes—it absolutely will for the many bettors who have been chomping at the bit to get some real NFL action over the last six months.

Oddsmakers opened betting at a pick ‘em, but that line was bet up to Atlanta -2 almost immediately. It’s since settled with the Falcons laying a single point, but more fluctuation in the coming days is to be expected. The total on the 2019 NFL Hall of Fame Game has been set at just 34.5 points, a small number but one that is reasonable when considering the type of talent that will be on the gridiron for much of the night in Canton. It’s also close to the average of 30.3 total points scored in the previous seven Hall of Fame Game clashes, including last year’s exciting tilt between the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens that resulted in a 17-16 win for Baltimore. You can find results for every Hall of Fame Game dating back to 2010 in the table below.

Those looking for advice against the spread and other tips for the 2019 NFL preseason opener should check back later in the week to get pro picks from Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com. The Vegas expert will be releasing the first of many predictions for the upcoming NFL season closer to Thursday’s kickoff. In the meantime, have a look at the complete schedule, start time, TV and live stream viewing information, updated odds, betting trends and more for this upcoming Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons showdown.

Hall of Fame Game 2019 Preview

The Falcons and Broncos have each participated in the Hall of Fame Game three times previously, with both teams compiling identical 1-2 records in the preseason opener, but never faced one another in those prior contests. Denver hasn’t made an appearance at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium since 2004, but it’s been even longer—25 years to be exact—since the Falcons have made a trip to Ohio to open the preseason schedule.

One interesting trend to note is that the Falcons haven’t had much success during the preseason since Dan Quinn took over as head coach in 2015. The team is just 4-12 during exhibition games in that span, including an 0-4 record in last year’s preseason. Atlanta doesn’t score many points in these matchups either, failing to ring up a single score in their 2018 NFL preseason opener against the New York Jets and totaling up just 27 points in the final three outings. It’s clear that Quinn doesn’t place much importance on getting his first-stringers reps in these meaningless contests, as evidenced by starting quarterback Matt Ryan playing just two snaps in that showdown with the Jets.

Quinn did mention he is looking forward to participating in the Hall of Fame Game and hopes the extra playing time—the Falcons and Broncos will compete in five preseason games this year, compared to four for the rest of the league—will result in improved team chemistry (via ProFootballHOF.com):

We are fired up to kick off the NFL’s 100th season in the Hall of Fame Game. We are honored to play in Canton and be a part of the celebration for all of the inductees. This is also an opportunity for us to strengthen our connection and our brotherhood with additional time on the field.

The Broncos have had quite a bit more success than their upcoming opponent with regards to finding the end zone during the preseason. They averaged an impressive 25 points across their four exhibition clashes last year, but those expecting some high totals from the Denver offense should be wary that those outbursts came with Vance Joseph calling the shots. Things could be different now that the club is employing Vic Fangio, the former Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator who will be making his head coaching debut on the sidelines this Thursday.

James Palmer tweeted a clip of Fangio discussing why he elected to hire an offensive coordinator who has never called plays at the NFL level:

            https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkay.../#1a371019a43e

Fangio is far from the only new hire in the Mile High City either, as the Broncos also have a new starting quarterback in Joe Flacco and a slew of other fresh faces up and down the roster. That could make for a rough start out of the gate in this nationally televised Pro Football Hall of Fame Game and something bettors should keep in mind when making a play on the matchup. There will be plenty more to dive into as information is revealed this week, including how much the head coaches plan to play their starters, an updated injury report and more, so check back for more 2019 NFL preseason info during the leadup to the official preseason start at the Hall of Fame Game.
