    Preview: Diamondbacks at Giants

    Current Conditions - San Francisco

    Partly cloudy 61 °F
    Wind: W 18.4
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (56-76) at San Francisco Giants (71-60)
    DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 31 - 3:45 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants look to avoid being the victim of a sweep when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon for the finale of their brief two-game set. San Francisco dropped a 4-3 decision in the opener, falling short in its comeback attempt and remaining two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West.

Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence -- the latter returned from a three-game absence due to tightness in his right hamstring -- each recorded three of the Giants' eight hits. San Francisco, which is 2-2 on its five-game homestand, kicks off a 10-game road trip Thursday in Chicago against the NL Central-leading Cubs. Arizona held on for its third win in four games Tuesday after using a four-run rally in the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. Welington Castillo highlighted the uprising with a two-run single and finished with two hits for the fifth time in his last seven contests.

TV: 3:45 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Shelby Miller (2-9, 7.14 ERA) vs. Giants LH Matt Moore (8-10, 3.95)

Miller will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to make his 15th start of the season and first since July 6, when he was tagged by San Diego for six runs in five innings. The 25-year-old native of Houston, who was an All-Star with Atlanta last year, has lost six of his last seven major-league outings but went 5-1 with one shutout and a 3.91 ERA in eight turns with Reno since being demoted on July 14. Miller fell to 2-3 in seven career starts against San Francisco on July 1, when he surrendered five runs and eight hits over six innings.

Moore came within one out of a no-hitter in Los Angeles on Thursday, limiting the Dodgers to one hit and three walks while striking out seven over 8 2/3 scoreless innings. The 27-year-old Floridian is 1-3 with a 3.41 ERA in five turns since being acquired from Tampa Bay and 0-2 with a 6.55 mark in two outings at AT&T Park. Moore lost his only career start against the Diamondbacks on June 7, yielding five runs and seven hits in seven frames at Arizona while with the Rays.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Giants CF Denard Span hopes to be in the lineup Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's loss in the seventh inning with a stiff neck.

    2. Arizona OF A.J. Pollock, who missed the first five months of the season with a fractured elbow, is 5-for-7 over his last two games after going 0-for-8 in his first two contests.

    3. San Francisco's Pence, C Buster Posey and 1B Brandon Belt are a combined 4-for-43 against Miller.

    PREDICTION: Giants 7, Diamondbacks 3

        Preview: Blue Jays at Orioles

        Current Conditions - Baltimore

        Partly sunny 74 °F
        Wind: N 1.1
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (75-57) at Baltimore Orioles (72-60)
        DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 31 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays rank 1-2 in the majors in home runs, so it's hardly a surprise that the long ball has played a pivotal role during their three-game series. Matt Wieters launched a tiebreaking two-run blast in Tuesday's 5-3 win for Baltimore, which hosts the Blue Jays in the rubber match Wednesday night.

Manny Machado became the youngest player in franchise history to reach 100 homers as the Orioles snapped Toronto's four-game winning streak and pulled within three games of the American East-leading Blue Jays. Steve Pearce clubbed a solo shot as Baltimore pushed its league-high total to 208 homers -- 15 more than Toronto. Aaron Sanchez will have 10 days of rest between starts for the Blue Jays, who sent him to Class A Dunedin while skipping a turn in an attempt to manage his innings. Sanchez has allowed only three homers in his last 11 starts, but he was taken deep four times by Baltimore in a 10-9 Toronto win on June 12.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, TVA Sports, Sportsnet (Toronto), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aarón Sánchez (12-2, 2.99 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Yovani Gallardo (4-6, 5.69)

Sanchez is coming off his shortest start, lasting only four innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits in Toronto's win at Cleveland on Aug. 20. He also struggled in his previous road start, allowing four runs over six innings to snap a string of 10 consecutive wins. Sanchez got the victory against Baltimore despite the homer binge on June 12 before allowiing three earned runs in a pair of subsequent starts versus the Orioles.

Gallardo is coming off a woeful performance in a loss to the New York Yankees, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on six hits in only 1 1/3 innings. It was the third defeat in four starts for Gallardo, who has notched only one victory in his last 11 appearances. Gallardo won his first four career starts versus the Blue Jays before taking the loss in Toronto on July 30, giving up five runs on five hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson had his RBI streak halted at five games but he has hit safely in nine straight contests.

        2. Orioles LHP Zach Britton has converted all 39 save chances.

        3. Toronto is calling up INF Ryan Goins from Triple-A Buffalo to replace 2B Darwin Barney, who is leaving the club to tend to personal business.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, Orioles 4

            Wind: SW 3.5
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Washington Nationals (77-55) at Philadelphia Phillies (60-72)

The Washington Nationals look to continue their dominance of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday as the National League East rivals conclude their three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. First-place Washington has won a franchise high-tying eight straight encounters versus Philadelphia to improve its division record to 37-16, tops in the majors.

Reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper has feasted on the Phillies this season, ripping a run-scoring double in Tuesday's 3-2 win to improve to 12-for-35 with three homers and nine RBIs against manager Pete Mackanin's club. Trea Turner is giving fits to many a team, as the speedy second baseman recorded his 15th multi-hit performance on Tuesday, is batting .357 in August and is 19-for-36 on his eight-game hitting streak. While Washington has answered a four-game skid by winning four of six to pad its lead atop the division, Philadelphia has dropped nine of its last 13 to quickly remove itself from even the fringes of the wild-card discussion. Odubel Herrera is 3-for-8 with a run scored in the series and has 11 hits in his last nine games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (9-9, 4.25 ERA) vs. Phillies LH Adam Morgan (1-8, 6.50)

Gonzalez allowed two runs on four hits in six innings versus Colorado on Friday to improve to 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA in his last nine starts. The 30-year-old has yielded two earned runs or fewer in seven of those nine contests and kept the ball in the park in five of his last eight trips to the mound. Gonzalez owns a solid 8-6 career mark versus Philadelphia, but suffered a hard-luck loss in his last encounter despite permitting just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings in a 3-0 setback on April 27.

Morgan allowed three homers and six runs total in five innings for the second time in four outings on Friday in a 9-4 setback at the New York Mets. The lone bright spot for the 26-year-old was he struck out eight batters for the third time in nine outings. Morgan looks to avenge a porous outing versus Washington, against which he yielded six runs on nine hits in six innings of a 7-2 setback on June 1.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy, who is 3-for-8 in the series, has 12 hits in his last nine games.

            2. Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is 0-for-8 in the series and 8-for-49 versus the Nationals this season.

            3. Washington has won seven of eight at Citizens Bank Park in 2016.

                5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (55-76) at Los Angeles Angels (58-74)
                DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 31 - 7:05 PM EST

Brandon Finnegan is displaying the promise that made him a coveted piece in the deal that sent Johnny Cueto to Kansas City just over a year ago. The left-hander hopes to produce his third consecutive strong outing as the Cincinnati Reds look to avoid a sweep when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game series.

Finnegan recorded a career-best 12 strikeouts in six innings of a no-decision against Arizona in his last turn after allowing one hit over seven scoreless frames of a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in his previous start. The 23-year-old has struck out 20 while yielding only two runs and four hits in the two outings. Finnegan will be looking to help Cincinnati end a stretch during which it has lost seven of nine games while the Angels have won six of their last seven. C.J. Cron belted two homers and drove in three runs in Tuesday's 4-2 victory while Mike Trout went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the second consecutive night.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Brandon Finnegan (8-9, 4.27 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (4-12, 5.24)

Finnegan is 3-1 over his last six starts and didn't allow a run in any of the victories. The 2014 first-round pick out of TCU has served up 27 homers but limited opposing hitters to a .234 average. Finnegan is 4-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 13 road starts while the opposition is batting .225 against him.

Nolasco has been a major disappointment since being acquired from Minnesota, as he is 0-4 with a 5.70 ERA in five starts. He hasn't been victorious since July 9, when he was still with the Twins, and has been touched for 25 homers - just three off his career worst set in 2008 with Miami. Nolasco is 3-2 with a 5.49 ERA in 11 career appearances (10 starts) against the Reds and has struggled against Zack Cozart (5-for-7, one homer) and Joey Votto (7-for-22, two homers).

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Reds SS Jose Peraza went 4-for-4 in Tuesday's loss to tie his career high for hits one night after departing early when he was struck in the face on an errant pickoff throw.

                2. Angels 3B Yunel Escobar, who went on the seven-day concussion list after fouling a ball off his own face on Aug. 19, is expected to return Friday.

                3. Votto recorded two hits on Tuesday to raise his August average to .400 and is attempting to become the first player in Cincinnati history to bat .400 in back-to-back months after hitting .413 in July.

                PREDICTION: Reds 4, Angels 3

                    Preview: Marlins at Mets

Current Conditions - New York City

                    Mostly cloudy 75 °F
                    Wind: N 4.6
                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Miami Marlins (67-65) at New York Mets (68-64)
                    DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 31 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
                    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The recent uptick in offense has coincided directly with an uptick in the win column for the New York Mets, who are thriving despite the rotation dealing with a slew of injuries. The Mets will try to clinch a series win and further bury the National League East-rival Miami Marlins when they host the third of a four-game series on Wednesday.

New York is missing Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Jon Niese and Zack Wheeler from its expected August rotation and skipped Jacob deGrom the last time through the rotation but have been able to provide plenty of support for the likes of Robert Gsellman, Rafael Montero and Seth Lugo of late. Lugo was the beneficiary of a four-hit effort from Jose Reyes and a pair of home runs from Curtis Granderson in Tuesday’s 7-4 triumph, which pushed the Mets one game ahead of the Marlins and 2 1/2 back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second NL wild card. Miami is operating at the other end of the offensive spectrum and has totaled six runs during a four-game slide. The Marlins needed a pair of runs in the ninth inning on Tuesday to push more than three across for just the second time in the last 10 games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH David Phelps (7-6, 2.52 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (12-7, 3.44)

Phelps is getting his sixth straight turn in the rotation and is trying to bounce back from the first tough start of the bunch. The Notre Dame product was reached for four runs – three earned – on two hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings last Friday. Phelps has struggled against New York in his career, going 1-4 with a 7.00 ERA in 11 games – five starts.

Colon limited Philadelphia to one run over seven innings on Friday but could not get through the eighth and ended up charged with four runs in seven-plus frames. The burly veteran earned a win in three of his last five outings and surrendered only one home run in that span. Colon last saw Miami on June 4, when he was charged with one earned run in five innings without factoring in the decision.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Matz (shoulder) was expected to come off the disabled list, but was scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday.

                    2. Miami CF Marcell Ozuna is 7-for-44 without a home run in his last 11 games.

                    3. New York 2B Neil Walker (back) sat out the first two games of the series but could return on Wednesday.

                    PREDICTION: Mets 5, Marlins 1

One year after leading the American League in losses, Corey Kluber is resembling the pitcher that won the Cy Young Award in 2014 for the Cleveland Indians. Kluber goes for his 15th victory and looks to win his seventh consecutive decision as the host Indians attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the spiraling Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

Kluber is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in five starts in August for Cleveland, which remains 4 1/2 games in front of the Detroit Tigers atop the AL Central. The Indians could use another strong outing from Kluber after their bullpen turned in 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 5-4 victory. Cleveland finally got untracked offensively after scoring one run or fewer in seven of its previous eight games, getting a three-run homer from Rajai Davis to erase a three-run deficit and hand the skidding Twins their 12th straight loss. Minnesota hasn't dropped 13 in a row since the 1961 season and is two losses from matching the franchise record of 14 straight defeats set in 1982.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Pat Dean (1-4, 6.24 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (14-8, 3.07)

Making his first start in more than two months, Dean was hit hard early and often in a loss in Toronto, getting shelled for six runs on eight hits while coughing up a pair of homers in a three-inning stint. It was Dean's fourth appearance since his recall from the minors, with the first three coming out of the bullpen. His lone win came at Seattle on May 27, when he allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings.

Kluber dropped to 2-5 on the season after giving up four runs over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on May 14, but he has turned things around with a streak of nine straight quality starts. The 30-year-old improved to 6-0 in that span by limiting Texas to one run and five hits over six innings on Friday. Trevor Plouffe is 13-for-42 with three homers and 10 RBIs against Kluber, who is 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA versus the Twins.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Cleveland reportedly has reached an agreement with Oakland to acquire OF Coco Crisp, who played his first four seasons with the Indians.

                        2. Plouffe has hit safely in five straight games and boasts multiple hits in four in a row.

                        3. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis followed off his walk-off single in the series opener with a homer Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to five games.

GAME: San Diego Padres (55-76) at Atlanta Braves (49-83)
                            DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 31 - 7:10 PM EST
                            WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

He only has played in 10 major-league games, but Dansby Swanson looks every bit as good as advertised for the rebuilding Atlanta Braves so far. The Braves host the San Diego Padres on Wednesday and Swanson, the 22-year-old shortstop who was selected by Arizona with the No. 1 overall draft pick last year but traded to Atlanta in December, recorded his fourth multi-hit performance in Tuesday’s 7-3 victory.

Swanson drove in a career-best three runs, raised his batting average to .300 and continued illustrating the poise and talent that may lead him to become a cornerstone for the franchise. The Padres have lost 10 of their last 15 games, and while they have pitched better of late (3.10 ERA and 3.4 walks per game in their previous 11), they gave up 12 hits and issued seven walks on Tuesday. Oswaldo Arcia went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is 3-for-8 in two games since being claimed off waivers from Miami. Travis Jankowski notched his 29th stolen base in 37 attempts while finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Paul Clemens (2-3, 5.06 ERA) vs. Braves RH Matt Wisler (5-11, 4.92)

A seventh-round pick of the Braves in 2008, Clemens makes his seventh start since the Padres claimed him off waivers from Miami on June 28. He gave up five runs - four earned - and seven hits against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 24 after allowing three earned runs or fewer in each of his previous four starts. The 28-year-old has posted a 2.25 strikeouts-to-walks ratio with San Diego after walking eight and striking out six over 10 frames in two games with the Marlins, but he has surrendered 10 home runs in 42 2/3 innings this season.

Wisler – like Swanson, one of many young players Atlanta is counting on – sparkled in his return to the majors on Thursday, keeping Arizona hitless for six innings en route to a one-run, two-hit performance over eight frames. The 23-year-old Wisler had allowed 23 earned runs in 20 1/3 innings in his final four turns before being demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett on July 29. Wisler, originally a seventh-round pick of San Diego in 2011, is 1-7 in 12 home starts.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. San Diego C Christian Bethancourt left Tuesday’s game in the fourth inning with a left intercostal strain.

                            2. The Braves placed RHP Arodys Vizcaino on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

                            3. Atlanta RHP Jose Ramirez struck out the side in the eighth on Tuesday, giving him 20 strikeouts in his last 16 2/3 innings.

                            PREDICTION: Braves 5, Padres 2

The Chicago Cubs are well-known for wilting late in the season, but their blistering August is another sign this team is built to change the franchise’s reputation. Chicago is 21-6 this month – the first time the club has won 21 games in a month since May 1977 – and hopes to add one more victory when it concludes its three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

The Cubs have won six straight and 18 of their last 21 at home after blanking the Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday to improve to 11-3 in the season series, including a 7-1 mark at home. The hot streak has helped Chicago open a 14-game lead in the National League Central as it closes in on its first division title since 2008. Pittsburgh has dropped the first two contests of the series following an eight-game road winning streak and is 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Cubs right-hander Jason Hammel looks to beat the Pirates for the third time in as many meetings this year and continue his dominance at Wrigley Field, where he is 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA in 12 starts this season.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ryan Vogelsong (3-3, 3.02 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (13-7, 3.21)
Vogelsong was used primarily out of the bullpen early in the season but has been a solid addition to the rotation since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 4. The 39-year-old has gone 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in five starts this month and won at Milwaukee last time out, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. Vogelsong is 5-7 with a 5.60 ERA in 20 career games (12 starts) against the Cubs.
Hammel was unhappy about his quick hook Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he was lifted after throwing just 39 pitches and allowing three runs in 2 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old has lost two straight turns following a six-start winning streak and allowed 13 runs - nine earned - in 5 2/3 frames over those two outings. Hammel is 7-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 career games (13 starts) versus Pittsburgh.

                                2. Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen is 10-for-29 during his eight-game hitting streak.
                                3. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 4-for-8 with three homers versus Vogelsong.
