    Re: MLB Betting Info. 8/31

Preview: Cardinals (70-61) at Brewers (56-76)

    Game: 3
    Venue: Miller Park
    Date: August 31, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- Craig Counsell knows the Milwaukee Brewers are close to snapping out of their recent funk but when you're playing some of the better teams in the league, close is hardly enough.

Each loss during Milwaukee's current six-game losing streak has come by three runs or less with three of them settled by a one-run margin, including the last two to St. Louis.

"We were a play away a bunch of these games during the losing streak," said Counsell, the Brewers' manager. "But you have to make those plays."

Starting pitching has been a strong suit for Milwaukee during its skid and the Brewers will hope Matt Garza will be able to keep things going Wednesday night when he takes the mound in series finale with the Cardinals at Miller Park.

Garza was the victim of bad luck his last time out. He cruised through five scoreless innings before a pair of Jonathan Villar errors led to a five-run outburst by the Pirates, capped off by a grand slam from Jody Mercer.

He allowed five hits and three walks in that contest, but struck out a season-high nine batters.

"The first time thought the lineup was as good as I've seen since I've been in the dugout," Counsell said. "He was really crisp, his off-speed stuff was outstanding. It was swing-and-miss stuff."

The Cardinals have been anything but kind to Garza during his 11-year career. He's made 13 starts against St. Louis, going 4-5 with a 4.25 ERA.

He's faced them once this season, allowing seven runs (only four earned) over 5 2/3 innings of a 7-1 loss July 1 at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis, which improved to 31-13 against the Brewers in Milwaukee under manager Mike Matheny, will try to polish off a sweep behind right-hander Luke Weaver.

Weaver earned his first major league victory in his last start, holding the A's to a run on four hits.

The key to Weaver's success against Oakland was drawing contact.

He got eight outs on the ground with just two fly balls -- one of them a home run by Yonder Alonso.

"If you're not going to strike them out, obviously try and get the ground ball," said Weaver, who struck out seven Oakland batters and has 16 in 15 innings of work since being called up. "The fly balls sometimes will keep going like you saw tonight. I know they stress it in the minor leagues and it's a big part of getting those double plays and eliminating the sac flies and all those types of things."

He'll be facing Milwaukee for the first time in his career.

"He's asking all the right questions still," Matheny said. "He's learning and he's improving and he's got a great repertoire to work with, very creative. With all the ground balls he got, that's a good sign that he's trusting his stuff."

Preview: Yankees (68-63) at Royals (69-63)

      Game: 3
      Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
      Date: August 31, 2016 8:15 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- While the Kansas City Royals have won their seven previous series, they will need a victory Wednesday over the New York Yankees to make it eight straight.

The Yankees topped the Royals 5-4 in 10 innings Tuesday night as the two teams have split the first two games of the series. Not only did the game go an extra inning, there was a 59-minute rain delay after the fifth.

The Royals had Raul Mondesi and Jarrod Dyson, their two fastest runners, in scoring position with none out in the 10th but failed to score.

Will it be difficult for the Royals to shake off such a defeat?

"What these guys did they fought to the bitter end," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "It was a game we were down 4-to-nothing, battled back, tied the ball game under horrible conditions. It just wouldn't stop raining from the fifth inning on. We had the go-around run on second base. We just couldn't get it in.

"That's a game, where you battle your tail off. You end up don't winning, so OK. You come back tomorrow and find a way to win. It's as simple as that."

The Royals and Yankees had a fierce rivalry from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s. They met four times in the postseason with the Royals winning only once, 1980. With both teams competing for a postseason berth this season, that rivalry has been rekindled.

"I think it's always exciting," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're talking about the team that won the World Series last year. It goes back years ago, with George Brett and all those guys. I think it is fun."

Yankees rookie right-hander Luis Cessa will make his third start in the series finale Wednesday. Cessa became the second Yankees pitcher since 2004 to win each of his first two career starts, joining Shane Greene, who won on July 7 and July 12, 2014. Cessa has defeated the Angels and Orioles in his first two starts.

Cessa, who will be making his 11th career appearance, is 4-0 with a 4.11 ERA. A dozen of the 15 runs he has allowed have scored on seven home runs -- four with the bases empty and a trio of three-run shots -- in 30 2/3 innings.

This is Cessa's fourth stint with the Yankees as he was recalled Aug. 11. He made the Opening Day roster as a reliever and made his major league debut on April 8, allowing a run in two innings at Detroit. He went 6-3 with a 3.03 ERA in ERA in 15 games, 14 of them starts, with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Right-hander Ian Kennedy will start for the Royals. Kennedy is 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA in August, allowing four earned runs in 32 1/3 innings. Kennedy has allowed two runs or less in his past six starts.

Kennedy was a Yankees 2006 first-round draft pick and made his major league debut with them in 2007 before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks after the 2009 season. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career appearances against the Yankees. He lost 7-3 on May 12 at Yankee Stadium.

Jacoby Ellsbury, who had four hits and drove in the winning run in the 10th inning Tuesday, is a career .355, 65-for-183, against the Royals.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Wednesday, August 31, 2016, Opening Line Report
        by Alan Matthews

The Los Angeles Dodgers admirably lead the NL West Division despite their rotation being ravaged by injury this season. But with all due respect to Clayton Kershaw, who remains on the DL, the last guy the Dodgers can afford to see get hurt now is shortstop Corey Seager, who is your lock NL Rookie of the Year and probably finishes second or third in the NL MVP voting. Los Angeles avoided total disaster on Monday when Seager was hit by a pitch on the left wrist in Colorado as X-rays were negative. He actually was hit in the calf earlier in the game by a pitch too. Seager was to get Tuesday off from the starting lineup but could be back in there as soon as Wednesday. Meanwhile, Kershaw is set to face hitters Tuesday in a simulated game. That probably determines if the Dodgers have a real shot at winning the pennant. If Kershaw is fine and is then activated, then L.A. does. But if he has a setback with that disk herniation then I don't believe the Dodgers can win a postseason series.

White Sox at Tigers (-119, 7.5)

It's the first game of the day with a 1:10 p.m. ET first pitch from Motown and also the top pitching matchup of Wednesday. The Pale Hose go with lefty Chris Sale (15-7, 3.14). He was a tough-luck loser last time out, throwing a complete game (his MLB-high fifth this year) vs. the Mariners and allowing three runs and five hits while striking out a season-high 14. Sale is 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA in three starts this year against the Tigers with a complete game. Miguel Cabrera hits .238 off Sale with 16 strikeouts in 42 at-bats. Victor Martinez is 18-for-38 off him with four homers. The Tigers likely won't have outfielder Cameron Maybin after he left Monday's game with a thumb injury. He was to have an MRI on Tuesday. Detroit's Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.33) beat the Angels in his last start, going 7.2 innings and giving up two runs and four hits. He's 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA in his last nine starts. Verlander beat the Sox in his lone start against them in 2016, allowing two runs over seven innings on June 5. Jose Abreu is 9-for-24 off him with three solo homers.

Key trends: The Sox are 1-4 in Sale's past five in Detroit. The Tigers are 4-0 in Verlander's past four at home vs. the White Sox. The "over/under" has gone under in five of Verlander's past seven at home overall.

        Early lean: Tigers and under.

Rays at Red Sox (-170, 9.5)

A 1:35 p.m. ET start from Fenway and shown on the MLB Network. The Rays start lefty Drew Smyly (6-11, 4.80). He hasn't lost since July 18 and comes off a no-decision in Houston, giving up two earned runs in six innings. He has gone at least six innings in seven straight outings. Smyly threw eight shutout innings in Boston on April 19 and gave up just one hit with 11 strikeouts. Mookie Betts is 5-for-15 off him with a homer. Dustin Pedroia is 2-for-16 with five strikeouts. Boston All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright (13-6, 3.18) returned from three weeks on the DL Friday and lost to Kansas City, allowing five runs over seven innings. He hasn't faced the Rays in 2016. Brad Miller is 1-for-4 off him with a homer.

Key trends: The Rays are 5-1 in Smyly's past six. The under is 5-0 in his past five vs. Boston. The under is 6-2-1 in Wright's past nine vs. the AL East.

        Early lean: Rays and under.

        Diamondbacks at Giants (-148, 8)

This gets underway at 3:45 p.m. ET. San Francisco lefty Matt Moore (8-10, 3.95) was one out shy of his first no-hitter last time out, but a clean single by the Dodgers' Seager broke it up. Moore was immediately pulled because he was at a season-high 133 pitches. I'd be a bit worried about him here. He pitched in Arizona on June 7 while still with Tampa Bay and allowed five runs and seven hits in seven innings. Paul Goldschmidt is 2-for-3 off him with a homer. Jake Lamb also went yard. Arizona lefty Robbie Ray (7-12, 4.28) lost to the Braves on Thursday, giving up two runs over five innings with four walks. He is 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts vs. the Giants this year. Brandon Belt is 3-for-7 off him with three RBIs. Joe Panik is 3-for-6.

Key trends: Arizona is 6-1 in its past seven vs. a lefty. The Giants are 1-5 in their past six on Wednesday. The over is 10-2 in Arizona's past 12 vs. teams with a winning record.

        Early lean: Diamondbacks and over.

Blue Jays at Orioles (+137, 9.5)

If I'm Blue Jays All-Star Aaron Sanchez (12-2, 2.99), I'm a bit ticked off at the team because it cost him several thousand dollars by sending him down to Class A to open a roster spot because the Jays were skipping his last big-league start to save innings on Sanchez's arm. He'll be brought back up for this one. Sanchez wasn't too sharp in that last outing, allowing five runs in a season-low four innings in Cleveland. He is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA in three August starts. Sanchez is 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts this year vs. the Orioles. Chris Davis is 6-for-14 with three homers off him. Adam Jones is 2-for-17. Baltimore's Yovani Gallardo (4-6, 5.69) had the shortest outing of his career Friday at the Yankees, getting just four outs and allowing eight runs and six hits. Gallardo is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 2016 vs. Toronto. Troy Tulowitzki is 11-for-31 career off him with four doubles. Edwin Encarnacion is 8-for-20 with three homers.

Key trends: The Jays are 6-1 in Sanchez's past seven vs. the AL East. The Orioles are 0-6 in Gallardo's past six vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 7-0 in Gallardo's past seven at home.

Early lean: Blue Jays and over.

        Pirates at Cubs (-175, TBA)

ESPN game. Pittsburgh's Ryan Vogelsong (3-3, 3.02) won in Milwaukee on Friday, allowing two runs and four hits over 5.1 innings. He has a 2.48 ERA in five starts since returning from a two-month absence after getting hit in the face with a line drive. Vogelsong has pitched 3.1 innings of relief vs. the Cubs this year and allowed a run. Anthony Rizzo is 4-for-8 against him with three homers and five RBIs. Kris Bryant is 0-for-4. Chicago lefty Mike Montgomery (1-1, 3.50) remains in the rotation until John Lackey comes off the DL. Montgomery comes off a no-decision at the Dodgers, allowing three runs in five innings, his longest stint as a Cub. He has never faced the Bucs. David Freese has seen him, going 1-for-3.

Key trends: The Pirates are 2-8 in Vogelsong's past 10 road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 4-1 in his past five.

Early lean: Pirates (and probably over what should be a high total if the wind is not blowing in).

          'Rubber Match'

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles August 31, 7:05 EST

Baltimore and Toronto conclude a three game series at Camden Yards with each club having notched a victory. According to current odds the Blue Jays are -$1.50 road favorites with the total set at 9.5 runs across all shops.

The Orioles will be facing Aaron Sanchez (12-2, 2.99 ERA) making his return after being optioned to the Minors in an effort to preserve innings. The righthander has an 8-4 Team Start Record in an opposing park and heads to the hill 2-1 vs Orioles this season.

Yovani Gallardo (4-6, 5.69 ERA) toes the rubber for Baltimore. In his last outing, he allowed eight runs in 1 1/3 innings and has now struggled in each of his last three starts, managing an 0-2 record racking up an ERA of 8.78 in the process. Gallardo split a pair vs Toronto this season but lost his last vs Jays tossing 4 1/3 innings of 5 run ball.

Backing Toronto with a hurler who hasn't seen major league action in 10 days is cause to ratchet up tension. However, with Gallardo severely struggling and knowing Orioles are 1-7 as underdogs with Gallardo, 0-4 vs a division opponent with the hurler the numbers add up well enough to conclude Jays are the best choice.

The Detroit Tigers are battling to stay in the American League wild card race and have put themselves right on the doorstep of the No. 2 spot. The Tigers will try to pull off a sweep of the three-game series and keep the pressure on the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox in the wild card chase when they host the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers got an eighth-inning, two-run blast from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in Monday’s 4-3 win and overcame an early 3-0 deficit in pounding out an 8-4 triumph on Tuesday that kept the team within one game of the Orioles for the second wild card and two games back of the wild-card leading Red Sox. Detroit is keeping an eye on the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians as well and are 4 1/2 behind in the division after winning seven of its last nine games. The White Sox have lost five of their last six road games to fall to 28-39 away from home. Chicago has been let down by its bullpen in each of the first two games of the series and watched Matt Albers squander the lead on Tuesday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (15-7, 3.14 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.33)

Sale is coming off a tough-luck loss against Seattle on Friday in which he struck out 14 and did not walk a batter while allowing three runs and five hits in a complete game. The Florida native went eight scoreless innings in his previous start and allowed three or fewer runs in six of his seven starts since the All-Star break. Sale struck out 10 and yielded two runs in eight innings at Detroit on Aug. 3 but came away with a loss in a 2-1 final.

Verlander is enjoying a string of nine straight quality starts and picked up the win in the last two while surrendering a total of three runs and seven hits in 13 2/3 innings. The former MVP has not allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since June 26. Verlander yielded two runs in seven innings to earn a win over Chicago on June 5 and improve to 19-13 with a 3.91 ERA in 37 career starts against the White Sox.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Tigers INF JaCoby Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in his major-league debut on Tuesday.

              2. Chicago 3B Todd Frazier hit his 33rd home run on Tuesday and is two shy of tying his career high.

              3. Detroit CF Cameron Maybin (thumb) underwent an MRI on Tuesday and remains day-to-day.

PREDICTION: White Sox 2, Tigers 1

The Boston Red Sox are locked in a battle for the American League East and the AL wild card spots and can’t afford to drop a series at home to a last-place team. The Red Sox will try to avoid that fate and earn a 3-3 homestand when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match on Wednesday.

Boston only has 10 home games left after Wednesday’s series finale and kicks off a nine-game road trip on Friday that starts on the west coast and finishes up with a showdown at Toronto, which owns a two-game lead in the AL East. The Red Sox are trying to sort out the roles in the bullpen in advance of that trip and were let down on Tuesday when Clay Buchholz, who is trying to take over the eighth-inning role, gave up a tie-breaking solo home run to Evan Longoria in the 4-3 loss. Longoria has eight home runs and 25 RBIs this month, with three of those blasts coming against Boston. The Rays will help decide the division when they return home this weekend and welcome Toronto and Baltimore, which trails the Red Sox by one game, in a six-game homestand.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Drew Smyly (6-11, 4.80 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.18)

Smyly has not lost since July 18 but did not factor in the decision at Houston on Friday, when he was reached for three runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks in six frames. The 27-year-old yielded two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts. Smyly turned in his best start of the season at Boston on April 19, when he surrendered one hit and struck out 11 in eight scoreless frames.

Wright (shoulder) came off the 15-day disabled list on Friday against Kansas City and allowed five runs in the first inning before settling in with five straight scoreless frames. The knuckleballer ended up with a loss in that outing – his first since June 25. Wright is seeing Tampa Bay for the first time in his career and is 7-2 with a 4.30 ERA at Fenway Park this season.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Red Sox RHP Brad Ziegler (flu) was unavailable on Tuesday and is day-to-day.

                  2. Tampa Bay SS Tim Beckham has hit safely in nine straight games and is 6-for-12 in his last three contests.

                  3. Boston CF Jackie Bradley Jr. is 5-for-37 with 20 strikeouts in the last 11 games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, Rays 3

Robinson Cano has recorded three straight multi-hit performances and seven in his last nine contests to finish August with a flourish. The 33-year-old Dominican looks to continue his good fortune at the plate on Wednesday afternoon as the visiting Seattle Mariners attempt to salvage the finale of a three-game series versus the American League West-leading Texas Rangers.

Cano recorded two hits on Tuesday to improve his batting average to .316 this month before Rougned Odor doused cold water on the party by belting a two-run homer in the ninth inning to send Texas to an 8-7 victory. The Rangers, who have claimed the first two contests of 25 straight games versus division representatives, have won four in a row overall and nine of 11 versus the Mariners. Seattle is trending in the other direction with setbacks in four straight to fall to 1-5 on its seven-game road trip to reside four games behind Baltimore for the second wild card. Felix Hernandez will look to stop the bleeding on Wednesday and attempt to subdue veteran Carlos Beltran, who has turned the corner from a woeful 0-for-32 stretch with six hits in his last three contests and is 5-for-9 in his career versus the former AL Cy Young Award winner.

TV: 2:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (9-4, 3.14 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (8-10, 4.45)

Hernandez won his third straight start and improved to 5-0 in his last seven outings after allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings of a 3-1 triumph at the Chicago White Sox. The 30-year-old Venezuelan had little difficulty with the White Sox in that outing, but did issue five walks over six frames in a 3-2 setback to Texas on Opening Day to fall to 17-22 in his career versus the Rangers. Odor played the hero with his first career walk-off homer on Tuesday, but is just 2-for-19 with eight strikeouts in his career against Hernandez.

Perez has seen the bottom fall out of late, permitting six runs for the second straight outing in a 12-1 rout by Cleveland on Friday. The performance marked the sixth time in 10 outings that the 25-year-old Venezuelan has yielded five or more runs. Perez, who is 7-2 at home this season, allowed two runs in six innings in a no-decision against Seattle on April 5 before yielding three runs in six frames of a 10-4 victory two months later.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Texas C Jonathan Lucroy 8-for-15 with three RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

                      2. Seattle SS Ketel Marte is 3-for-9 in the series and has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 contests.

                      3. The Rangers haven't allowed a home run in eight straight games, tying Miami for the longest stretch this season.

                      PREDICTION: Mariners 3, Rangers 2

The Houston Astros look to win for the 10th time in 12 contests when they attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon. Houston has recovered from a five-game losing streak in the middle of the month to put together a solid stretch and sits two games behind Baltimore for the American League's second wild-card spot.

Colby Rasmus was activated from the disabled list prior to Houston's 3-1 victory on Tuesday and homered in his first at-bat, proclaiming himself recovered from the cyst inside his right ear that contributed to a 3-for-66 slump before he went on the DL. "I'm just excited to be back in a game with these boys," Rasmus said prior to the game. "Watching all that's gone on, the good things that are happening, the place that we're in, the chances that we have to get back to the playoffs and pop some bottles, it's very exciting and I hope I can help out." The Athletics have recorded just one run and nine hits in the series and were blanked over the first 16 frames before scoring an eighth-inning run on an infield out by Marcus Semien. Oakland is 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position in the two games.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Ross Detwiler (1-3, 5.74 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (9-6, 4.40)

Detwiler has lost three straight starts since winning his debut with Oakland. The 30-year-old has allowed 14 runs and 23 hits over 14 innings in the three defeats after working eight scoreless frames versus Baltimore in his first outing. Detwiler is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against Houston.

Fiers did not receive a decision against Tampa Bay in his last outing as he gave up three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He is 6-3 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 13 home starts. Fiers is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in five career starts against Oakland but has struggled with Danny Valencia (4-for-8, two homers) and Yonder Alonso (4-for-8).

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. The Athletics reportedly are in the process of completing a trade that will send OF Coco Crisp to Cleveland.

                          2. Houston DH/C Evan Gattis hit his 22nd homer on Tuesday, his fourth blast in his last nine contests.

                          3. Alonso is 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in the series and hitless in 11 at-bats over the last four games.

                          PREDICTION: Astros 4, Athletics 2

The Colorado Rockies have established a pattern of playing up - and down - to the competition, a trend that continued in the opener of their three-game series against the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. After rain washed out Tuesday's matchup, the Rockies look to extend their three-game winning streak when they host the Dodgers in a split doubleheader on Wednesday.

Colorado has won two of three against division leaders Washington (twice) and the Chicago Cubs, only to get swept in Philadelphia and Milwaukee over the last 2 1/2 weeks. DJ LeMahieu is batting a robust .444 in the month of August after collecting two hits and three RBIs on Monday for the Rockies, who are seven games out of the second wild-card spot. Los Angeles has lost three of four games but received some positive news on the injury front Tuesday. Ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw, on the disabled list with a herniated disk, pitched a two-inning simulated game in Los Angeles and felt "great," team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told reporters.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Ross Stripling (3-5, 4.13 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (4-5, 3.69)

Los Angeles bumped veteran Bud Norris to give another start to the 26-year-old Stripling, who has turned in mediocre performances in his last two outings. Stripling permitted three runs and seven hits over five innings in a loss to San Francisco last time out and had allowed three runs and six hits over five frames in his previous start. He has pitched beyond five innings in only one of his last 10 appearances.

Anderson gave up two runs or fewer for the fourth time in six starts last time out but was saddled with the loss despite yielding two runs and striking out 10 in five innings at Milwaukee. The 26-year-old made his lone career start against the Dodgers earlier this month and earned the victory with seven innings of two-run ball. Anderson has acquitted himself well at Coors Field, posting a 4-1 record and 3.45 ERA.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig, currently playing at Triple-A, reportedly was claimed off waivers by an unnamed team on Tuesday.

                              2. Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado is 18-for-33 with five homers and 14 RBIs in his last eight games.

                              3. Los Angeles LHPs Scott Kazmir and Brett Anderson and RHP Brandon McCarthy also threw simulated games Tuesday.

                              PREDICTION: Rockies 5, Dodgers 3
