      Preview: Rockies at Mets

Current Conditions - New York City

      Clear 75 °F
      Wind: WNW 3.5
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: Colorado Rockies (51-52) at New York Mets (53-49)
      DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 30 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets are taking a gamble as they continue their four-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, sending 43-year-old Bartolo Colon to the mound on three days' rest. Colorado has won the first two games of the series to extend its winning streak to four in a row while the Mets have dropped three straight.

The starting rotation has not been an issue for New York, allowing a total of eight runs over the past five games. Colon will be pitching on fewer than four days' rest for the first time since 2005, when he won the American League Cy Young Award with the Angels. He'll need to be wary of Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez, who is 4-for-7 with two homers versus Colon and had a three-run homer and RBI double in Friday's 6-1 victory. Charlie Blackmon broke out of a 3-for-22 rut with four hits Friday as Colorado won for the eighth time in nine games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Jorge De La Rosa (6-7, 5.70 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colón (9-5, 3.35)

De La Rosa rebounded from a wretched outing by limiting Baltimore to two runs (one earned) on four hits over 6 1/3 innings of a no-decision. He was shelled for nine runs and 11 hits by Tampa Bay in his previous turn, halting a string of five consecutive quality starts. James Loney has tormented De La Rosa, going 8-for-18 with a home runs and seven RBIs.

Continuing a pattern of alternating good and bad starts in July, Colon beat St. Louis last time out by giving up one run and three hits over seven innings. Colon had struggled in two of his previous three turns, giving up six runs in each and failing to get through five innings. Nolan Arenado is hitless in his last 13 at-bats but is 3-for-5 with a homer versus Colon.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Gonzalez has 11 RBIs during his 11-game hitting streak.

      2. Mets CF Juan Lagares faces surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in his left thumb that will sideline him six weeks.

      3. Rockies rookie CF David Dahl has hit safely in all five career games, going 7-for-19.

      PREDICTION: Rockies 5, Mets 4

          Preview: Cardinals at Marlins

          Current Conditions - Miami

          Clear 80 °F
          Wind: N 0.0
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (56-47) at Miami Marlins (55-48)
          DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 30 - 7:10 PM EST
          WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Locked in a tight National League wild card race, the Miami Marlins showed they mean business by pulling off a seven-player deal with the San Diego Padres on Friday. One of the pitchers acquired in the deal, Colin Rea, will get the start in Saturday's matchup against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

Right-hander Andrew Cashner, scheduled to start Sunday, was also part of the deal that cost Miami right-hander Jarred Cosart and a pair of their top minor-league prospects, first baseman Josh Naylor and pitcher Luis Castillo. "We've played so well and we thought our starting pitching needed more," Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill said. "We’re excited that we were able to accomplish some of our goals as we finish up this trade deadline season." St. Louis followed up Thursday's 5-4 series-opening victory with an 11-6 drubbing to move into sole possession of the second wild card, one game ahead of Miami. Tommy Pham and Jeremy Hazelbaker each belted a pair of two-run shots as the Cardinals pushed their NL-leading homer total to 142 en route to their ninth win in 12 games.

          TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals LH Jaime García (7-7, 3.97 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Colin Rea (5-5, 4.98)

Garcia will be making his first career start on three days' rest, having thrown only 77 pitches over five innings in a loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday. Aside from the low pitch count, Garcia's success against the Marlins could be a factor in the decision -- he is 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA in five starts versus Miami. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton is 4-for-6 against Garcia.

Rea projects as more of a depth move for Miami, given that he has permitted at least three runs in 10 of his last 12 starts. He suffered his second straight loss despite his third quality start in the last six turns, allowing three runs and five hits over six innings at Toronto. Rea faced the Cardinals on April 24, giving up two earned runs in five innings of a no-decision.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Marlins LF Ichiro Suzuki went 0-for-4 Friday to remain two hits shy of 3,000.

          2. Cardinals C Yadier Molina has hit safely in 13 straight games, with multiple hits in his last four contests.

          3. Marlins 1B Derek Dietrich is 0-for-22 with nine strikeouts in his last seven games.

          PREDICTION: Cardinals 6, Marlins 4

              Preview: Pirates at Brewers

              Current Conditions - Milwaukee

              Cloudy 67 °F
              Wind: ENE 4.6
              5-Day Forecast
GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (52-49) at Milwaukee Brewers (45-56)
              DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 30 - 7:10 PM EST
              WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
              LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates will have to be better against National League Central opponents the rest of the way if they are to return to the postseason for a fourth straight year. The Pirates look to improve on a 19-21 record versus division foes when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday for the second of a three-game series.

Pittsburgh managed just four hits and did not score until the ninth inning in a 3-1 loss to the Brewers on Friday and send rookie Jameson Taillon to the mound to try and even the series Saturday. Milwaukee has won four its last five games, but can only be a spoiler the final two months of the season while standing fourth in the Central. The Brewers are 12th of 15 teams in the NL in runs scored and in the middle of the pack in ERA as they prepare for the trade deadline on Aug. 1. Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who has hit safely in six straight games, is drawing plenty of interest and a deal could be made this weekend.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (2-1, 3.60 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (5-10, 5.40)

Taillon has allowed three or fewer runs in five of his seven major-league starts and is unbeaten in his past four outings. The second overall pick in 2010 held the Brewers to one run on five hits July 19 without factoring in the decision. Taillon has struck out 31 and walked just five – none in the last three games -- in 40 innings overall after posting seven and zero, respectively, against Philadelphia on Sunday.

Anderson snapped a four-game losing streak last time out when he permitted two runs and seven hits over five innings to beat Arizona on Monday. The 28-year-old limited opponents to three runs or fewer in 12 of 19 starts, including all four in July. Jordy Mercer is 5-for-6 with two RBIs versus Anderson, who has a 5.89 ERA in four career starts against Pittsburgh after giving up three runs in four innings July 20.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Milwaukee 2B Scooter Gennett is 10-for-30 with a homer and six RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

              2. Pittsburgh LF Starling Marte is 9-for-18 with three RBIs over the past five contests.

              3. Brewers OF Ryan Braun is day-to-day after sitting out the last two games with right side tightness.

              PREDICTION: Pirates 6, Brewers 3

                  DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 30 - 7:10 PM EST

Although they are only 15 games into the second half of the season, the Chicago White Sox already have endured losing streaks of four, three and three games. Chicago will look to end its latest three-game skid in the middle contest of a three-game series at the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

The White Sox reeled off four straight wins before their current slide, which has featured one run scored in each loss and a combined 16 hits. The latest setback -- a 2-1 defeat in 12 innings -- came on a walk-off, bases-loaded walk that dropped Chicago's record to 7-19 in its last 26 games against American League Central opponents. Brian Dozier is 11-for-29 during a seven-game hitting streak for the Twins, who parlayed a hit batsman and three walks into the winning rally Friday. Minnesota sends left-hander Tommy Milone to the mound to face White Sox righty Miguel Gonzalez on Saturday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPWR (Chicago), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Miguel González (2-5, 4.28 ERA) vs. Twins LH Tommy Milone (3-3, 4.97)

Gonzalez recorded his fifth straight quality start last time out versus the Chicago Cubs, pitching 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball, but he is 1-2 in that span. Gonzalez has notched only one win over his last eight starts, when he tossed seven scoreless innings against the Yankees on July 6. He has made three starts against Minnesota, logging a 1-2 mark and 5.94 ERA.

Milone had his three-start winning streak halted when he was battered for eight runs and three homers over 4 2/3 innings at Boston. He turned in his best performance of the season in his previous turn, going 8 1/3 innings and yielding two runs on four hits. He is 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA versus Chicago and has struggled against Carlos Sanchez (6-for-10) and Avisail Garcia (6-for-15).

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. White Sox RF Adam Eaton had two assists Friday to boost his total to a major league-leading 16.

                  2. Minnesota has allowed a leadoff homer 12 times this season, including in five of its last nine games.

                  3. White Sox 3B Todd Frazier missed Friday's game due to flu-like symptoms.

PREDICTION: White Sox 4, Twins 3

                      DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 30 - 7:10 PM EST

Jason Kipnis has heated up with the blistering-hot temperature as the 29-year-old boasts nine multi-hit performances in last 16 games. Kipnis looks to continue his sizzling performance on Saturday as the host Cleveland Indians vie for a series victory versus the Oakland Athletics.

Kipnis had an RBI single among his two hits in Friday's 5-3 win to improve to 30-for-90 in July. While Kipnis is getting hot, the Indians have been slow to follow suit as the American League Central leaders own just two victories in their last six outings. Oakland had won five of six overall and nine of 13 since the All-Star break prior to Friday's setback, but it hasn't been shy with the home-run ball. Khris Davis went deep for the third time in two games, although the 28-year-old hasn't had much success versus either Cleveland (3-for-18, five strikeouts) or Saturday starter Josh Tomlin (0-for-3, two strikeouts).

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Dillon Overton (1-1, 8.40 ERA) vs. Indians RH Josh Tomlin (10-3, 3.48)

Overton is slated to be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to make his fourth spot start for Oakland on the heels of a solid 6 1/3-inning performance versus Houston on July 19. The 24-year-old allowed three runs and struck out six without issuing a walk en route to recording a no-decision. Overton was taken deep once versus the Astros and has surrendered six homers in 15 innings.

Tomlin has struggled in two of his last three outings, allowing 13 runs on 20 hits in 18 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old was taken deep on two occasions in six innings of a 5-2 setback at Baltimore last Saturday and has surrendered 14 homers in his last eight starts. Tomlin has taken the loss in both career outings versus Oakland despite recording an 0.66 WHIP and limiting the club to a .157 batting average.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Oakland DH Billy Butler is 7-for-11 with one homer and four RBIs in his last three games.

                      2. Jim Thome will be in attendance when he is inducted into the Indians' Hall of Fame prior to Saturday's game. Albert Belle, Frank Robinson and Charlie Jamieson are also being inducted.

                      3. Oakland RHP Sonny Gray will start on Sunday in place of LHP Rich Hill, who was scratched as he deals with a blister on the middle finger of his left hand.

                      PREDICTION: Indians 5, Athletics 1

The Detroit Tigers haven't been shy about flexing their muscle in a bid to power up for a run toward the top of the American League Central standings. After erupting for a season-high 14 runs and 16 hits in the opener, the Tigers look to extend their winning streak to five games on Saturday when they vie for a series victory against the visiting Houston Astros.

Justin Upton belted a three-run homer in Friday's 14-6 rout and has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games, but is 0-for-4 in a small sample size versus Saturday starter Mike Fiers. While the Tigers have scored 31 runs in their last four contests and won six of eight to reside 4 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland, Houston has dropped three of four on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Jose Altuve launched a two-run homer to extend his road hitting streak to 20 games in the opener and has reached base in a staggering 35 consecutive games away from Minute Maid Park. The diminutive star looks to continue his good fortune against Saturday starter Justin Verlander, versus whom he is 4-for-8.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Mike Fiers (7-4, 4.69 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (10-6, 3.64)

Fiers improved to 4-1 in his last seven starts on Sunday after allowing three runs in seven innings of a 13-3 rout of the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old has permitted 17 earned runs in that stretch and surrendered five hits or fewer in five of those seven starts. Fiers escaped with the victory versus Detroit on April 17 despite being taken deep on three occasions over 5 2/3 innings.

After allowing eight runs in a disastrous start versus Cleveland on June 26, Verlander has responded by permitting that many runs over his last five starts. The 33-year-old improved to 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA and 37 strikeouts in that span on Monday after allowing one run in six innings of a 4-2 victory at Boston. Verlander has had his way with Houston, posting a 3-0 mark in six career encounters while limiting the club to a .203 batting average.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          3. Astros LF Colby Rasmus has hit safely in back-to-back contests after going 0-for-27 in his previous seven.

Rougned Odor looks to rough up Kansas City pitching for the third consecutive game when his Texas Rangers host the Royals on Saturday in the third contest of their four-game set. Odor has smashed three homers in the first two games of the series - including shots that traveled 465 and 443 feet - and Texas held Kansas City to five runs while notching two victories.

Odor hit two of the homers in Friday's 8-3 victory and is 4-for-7 in the series. The Rangers increased their lead over Houston in the American League West to four games while the sinking Royals - who have lost eight of their last 10 - fell 10 games behind first-place Cleveland in the Central. Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain went 0-for-2 but walked and was hit by a pitch in his return from a month-long absence due to a hamstring injury, and the player who finished third in last season's MVP balloting is hoping to help turn around the team's sagging fortunes. "I'll do whatever it takes to get this team winning," Cain told reporters before Friday's game. "Hopefully, I can be a spark. That's a priority right now. It's been a tough season so far. 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.41 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (7-7, 4.38)

Kennedy has lost his last three decisions as part of a five-start winless stretch. He hasn't come close to living up to the five-year, $70 million deal the Royals gave him in the offseason, and there is rampant speculation the club is trying to unload him prior to the upcoming trade deadline. Kennedy is 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in three career starts against the Rangers and has struggled with Adrian Beltre (4-for-10, one homer).

Perez also has been shaky of late, going 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA during a five-start winless stretch. He allowed 19 earned runs during three straight losses before receiving a no-decision against Oakland in his last turn, giving up five runs - three earned - and nine hits in six innings. Perez wasn't involved in the decision in his lone career start against the Royals in 2013, when he gave up one run and seven hits over 5 2/3 frames.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. All-Star Game MVP Eric Hosmer of the Royals hit a two-run homer on Friday but is just 3-for-34 over his last nine games.

                              2. Texas INF/OF Jurickson Profar, who homered and scored three runs Friday, is 8-for-21 over his last six contests.

                              3. Kansas City C Salvador Perez (head cold) was back in the lineup after a one-game absence and went 1-for-4.

                              PREDICTION: Royals 5, Rangers 3
