    Preview: Mariners at Blue Jays

    Current Conditions - Toronto

    Clouds and sun 73 °F
    Wind: WSW 8.1
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Seattle Mariners (48-47) at Toronto Blue Jays (54-42)
    DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 7:07 PM EST
    WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Toronto Blue Jays are knocking on the door of first place in the American League East again as they prepare for a nine-game homestand that starts with the first of three against the Seattle Mariners on Friday. The Blue Jays scored 31 runs in five games since the All-Star break and have won three straight after a 10-4 triumph at Arizona on Wednesday.

Reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson is 7-for-14 with a homer and six RBIs during the winning streak and Edwin Encarnacion boasts homers in two straight and three of the last four for Toronto. Donaldson has reached base safely in 47 of the last 48 games and is batting .368 during that stretch as the Blue Jays have pulled within a game of first-place Boston. Seattle is trying to stay alive in the playoff chase and got a big boost from Wednesday’s 6-5 victory in 11 innings over the Chicago White Sox as Leonys Martin belted two homers, including a walk-off blast. Mariners All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano has struggled a bit since the break, going 4-for-24 with seven strikeouts in six games.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), TVAS, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (2-4, 4.56 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (5-3, 2.93)

Paxton struggled in his first start since the All-Star break when he allowed six runs and nine hits over five innings in a loss to Houston on Friday. The 27-year-old Canadian gave up a home run in that contest after going six outings in a row without surrendering a blast. Paxton beat Toronto last season by yielding two runs on four hits in six innings, improving to 1-1 lifetime against the Blue Jays.

Estrada will be activated to make his first start since July 2 after suffering from lower-back soreness. The 33-year-old Mexico native had permitted no more than three runs and five hits in his previous nine starts before the injury that caused him to miss the All-Star Game. Nelson Cruz is 4-for-5 with a homer versus Estrada, who is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two career starts against Seattle.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Cruz is 6-for-13 in his last four contests overall and is a .315 career hitter against the Blue Jays with 19 homers in 71 games.

    2. Toronto LF Michael Saunders (16 homers) left the team for personal reasons Wednesday, but is expected to return for Friday’s contest.

    3. The Mariners finish July with eight straight road games and play the next 12 contests against teams over .500.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, Mariners 3

        Preview: Diamondbacks at Reds

        Current Conditions - Cincinnati

        Sunny 74 °F
        Wind: N 0.0
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (40-55) at Cincinnati Reds (36-59)
        DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Joey Votto has appeared to turn the page on a disappointing first half of the season and looks to stay hot when his Cincinnati Reds host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday in the opener of a three-game set. Votto batted .252 before the All-Star break but is 11-for-20 with a pair of homers and five RBIs in six games since for the Reds, who stand last in the National League Central.

Votto belted a two-run homer – his 16th blast of the campaign – in Wednesday’s 6-3 victory over Atlanta as Cincinnati improved to 4-2 during its nine-game homestand. The Reds took two of three from the Braves, who reside at the bottom of the NL East, and hope for even better against the last-place team in the NL West this weekend. The Diamondbacks fell into the cellar by losing seven of their last nine, including a 10-4 defeat at Toronto on Wednesday. Jean Segura went 6-for-12 in the last three games for Arizona, which has won eight of its last 10 contests against Cincinnati.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (3-5, 4.37 ERA) vs. Reds RH Dan Straily (4-6, 4.07)

Bradley posted four quality starts in his last six appearances, but managed to record only one victory during that stretch. The 23-year-old Oklahoma native limited the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco to three runs over 12 innings combined in his past two starts that straddled the All-Star break, going 0-1. Bradley, who faces the Reds for the first time, has been better on the road (2-2, 3.51 ERA) in 2016.

Straily is winless in six straight starts, but has pitched well in the last three while allowing six runs and 11 hits over 20 innings total. The 27-year-old Marshall product has limited opponents to a .212 batting average overall and is 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in 10 home games (nine starts). Straily, who is 0-5 in a dozen night games (10 starts) this season, faces the Diamondbacks for the first time in his career.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt has 132 homers and needs one to pass Chris Young for third on the franchise’s all-time list.

        2. Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips has hit safely in nine straight games, going 12-for-34 during that stretch.

        3. Diamondbacks CF Michael Bourn boasts multiple hits in three of his last five contests.

        PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 5, Reds 3

            Current Conditions - Boston

            Clouds and sun 80 °F
            Wind: SW 20.7
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Minnesota Twins (35-60) at Boston Red Sox (54-39)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 7:10 PM EST
            WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

With a boatload of road games spread over the final two months of the season, the Boston Red Sox are making the most of their time at home. The streaking Red Sox look to continue their recent dominance at Fenway Park when they play the second of four straight contests against the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Boston's 13-2 romp in the series opener was its sixth straight win and eighth in nine games at home, and the offense continues to carry the load for the top team in the American League East. Led by Dustin Pedroia (5-for-5, three runs scored), the top four hitters in the Red Sox's lineup combined to go 14-for-19 with nine RBIs and the club pounded out 17 hits overall while improving to 33-20 at home. Following the current homestand, Boston plays 41 of its next 60 games on the road, including two West Coast trips. Fortunately for Boston, it gets three more this weekend against the AL-worst Twins, who recorded only five hits against Steven Wright and one reliever on Thursday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (2-6, 5.12 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 7.18)

Gibson has given up exactly four runs in each of his last three outings and surrendered a season-high 10 hits in a loss to Cleveland his last time out. He made his return from a shoulder injury against the Red Sox on June 11, allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings. The former first-round pick has made one career start at Fenway Park and it was a gem, as he gave up two hits and struck out eight in seven scoreless frames on June 18, 2014.

Rodriguez has worked his way back into Boston's ever-changing rotation with a triumphant return from the minors on Saturday against the Yankees in New York. The 23-year-old allowed a run and four hits in a season-high seven innings, although he served up his 10th home run in 36 1/3 frames and struck out just one batter. Rodriguez was reached for four runs in 4 2/3 innings opposite Gibson earlier this year and will be mindful of Brian Dozier, who is 2-for-4 with a home run and two walks against him.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Red Sox DH David Ortiz homered Thursday and needs one more to reach 25 for the 12th time in his career.

            2. Twins 3B Miguel Sano has struck out at least once in each of his 16 games since returning from a hamstring strain.

            3. Minnesota leads the all-time series 304-303.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 7, Twins 4

                Preview: Mets at Marlins

                Current Conditions - Miami

                Sunny 80 °F
                Wind: N 0.0
                5-Day Forecast
GAME: New York Mets (50-44) at Miami Marlins (52-43)
                DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 7:10 PM EST
                WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
                LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets find themselves in unfamiliar water as they are looking up at the Miami Marlins in both the National League East standings and the race for the second wild-card spot. The reigning NL champions, who trail the Marlins by 1 1/2 games, can do a little something about that as they open a three-game series in Miami on Friday.

"They're playing very, very well," Mets manager Terry Collins said of the Marlins, who have won eight of their last 10 to move within 4 1/2 games of first-place Washington. "We've got to go win two. We've got to make up some ground. There's no doubt it's going to be a big weekend for us." Wilmer Flores went deep for the second straight game on Wednesday and the seventh time this month in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. While New York won two of three in Miami during the division rivals' last encounter from June 3-5, the Marlins have come on with a vengeance entering their 10-game homestand. Christian Yelich homered in Thursday's 9-3 victory at Philadelphia to extend his hitting streak to eight games, during which he is 13-for-35 with eight RBIs and six runs scored.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.21) vs. Marlins LH Adam Conley (6-5, 3.61)

Verrett showed promise in his last outing as he attempts to fill the shoes of the injured Matt Harvey, allowing two runs in six innings of a no-decision versus the Phillies. The 26-year-old hasn't notched a victory since April but has kept the Marlins off the scoreboard in each of his two encounters this season. Verrett scattered three hits over six innings against Miami on April 13 and tossed two more scoreless frames in a relief appearance on July 4.

Conley matched a season high with nine strikeouts in his last outing on Sunday but walked away without a decision after permitting three runs in 5 1/3 innings at St. Louis. The 26-year-old will vie for his third straight win overall and first versus the Mets, against whom he scattered four hits and struck out nine over six scoreless frames on April 13. Conley has yielded just one run and registered 17 strikeouts versus two walks in three career meetings with New York.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Miami OF Ichiro Suzuki (2,996) continues his quest for 3,000 major-league hits versus New York, against which he is batting .277 in 39 career games.

                2. Mets RHP Zack Wheeler, who is attempting to return from Tommy John surgery, is expected to throw a bullpen session in front of team coaches on Friday.

                3. Marlins 2B Derek Dietrich, who recorded three hits on Thursday, has five in as many games against New York this season.

                PREDICTION: Mets 3, Marlins 2

The Chicago Cubs appear to have their groove back, and it all begins with their starting pitching. Right-hander Jason Hammel hopes to continue that trend and keep the Cubs on track when they begin a three-game road series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.

Cubs starters struggled going into the All-Star break but have posted a 1.54 ERA over the first six games to start the second half. The Cubs also have reinforcements coming to the bullpen – left-hander Mike Montgomery was acquired from Seattle on Wednesday – and the lineup – center fielder Dexter Fowler is expected to return to the club during the series. The Brewers started the second half with a 2-4 road trip, dropping two of three in Pittsburgh after a 5-3 loss Thursday. Milwaukee is a respectable 23-22 at home, though, and took two of three from the Cubs from May 17-19 at Miller Park.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jason Hammel (8-5, 3.34 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (6-7, 3.39)
Hammel snapped a skid of nearly six weeks between victories when he beat Texas on Saturday, holding the Rangers to one run and three hits over six frames. The Cubs have struggled to score for the 33-year-old lately, putting up three or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts. Hammel is 8-1 with a 2.66 ERA in 12 starts against the Brewers, but the lone defeat came earlier this season in Milwaukee.
Nelson lost three straight starts in early June, culminating with an ugly outing at San Francisco, but he has been lights out in five starts since. The 27-year-old has posted a 1.86 ERA over that stretch and is coming off one of his strongest outings of the year, as he allowed six hits and struck out seven over seven scoreless innings to beat Cincinnati on Saturday. Nelson pitched 7 1/3 scoreless frames in a no-decision against the Cubs on May 18 and is 0-4 against them despite a 2.83 ERA over nine meetings (seven starts).

                    WALK-OFFS
                    1. The Cubs have stolen a base in a season-high five consecutive games after recording just five stolen bases over their previous 24 games.
                    2. Brewers OF Ryan Braun, who is riding a six-game hitting streak, is 8-for-23 with two homers versus Hammel.
                    3. Cubs INF Javier Baez is 11-for-26 during a career-best seven-game hitting streak.

                    PREDICTION: Cubs 6, Brewers 4

Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer is making a strong case for American League Rookie of the Year honors and looks to record his 10th victory of the season when the Tigers visit the Chicago White Sox on Friday in the second contest of a four-game set. Fulmer has a spectacular 0.69 ERA over his last 10 starts and is 7-1 during the stretch.

Fulmer has been solid on the road with a 7-2 mark and 2.43 ERA in 10 starts and looks to guide the Tigers to their second consecutive win in the series. Detroit posted a 2-1 victory Thursday in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings because of rain as second baseman Ian Kinsler hit his fourth homer since the All-Star break and 20th of the campaign. First baseman Miguel Cabrera also went deep — the homer was his first since June 29 — to raise his career RBI count to 1,499. The White Sox have dropped seven of their past eight games and have scored one run or fewer in five of the defeats.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.13 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Jacob Turner (0-1, 18.00)

Fulmer received a no-decision in his last turn when he gave up two runs and six hits in a season-high eight innings against the Kansas City Royals. The performance marked the first time since May 15 that he gave up more than one earned run but he didn't allow a homer for the eighth time in nine starts. Fulmer, who has allowed three or fewer hits in six of his 14 starts, is holding opposing batters to a .206 average.

Turner is getting another opportunity despite allowing eight runs and seven hits in four innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday in his White Sox debut. The 25-year-old is temporarily filling the rotation spot of Carlos Rodon, who is on the disabled list with a wrist injury. Turner was the ninth overall selection by the Tigers in 2009 and was 1-2 with an 8.28 ERA in six career starts for Detroit before being shipped to the Marlins in a 2012 trade.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. White Sox C Alex Avila (hamstring) experienced a setback during a rehab outing with Triple-A Charlotte and could be sidelined for another month.

                        2. Detroit has scored just 10 runs over its last five games but has gone 3-2.

                        3. Chicago 2B Brett Lawrie (hamstring) departed Thursday's game after three innings.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (43-52) at Houston Astros (51-44)
                            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas

Although they are out of contention in the American League playoff chase, the Los Angeles Angels are the hottest team in baseball as they prepare to open a three-game series at the Houston Astros on Friday night. Los Angeles is perfect since the All-Star break after completing a three-game sweep of AL West-leading Texas.

"We're getting contributions from a lot of guys," manager Mike Scioscia told reporters of his Angels, who have scored 40 runs during the winning streak. "Our lineup is getting deeper." And although Los Angeles is on a roll, it hasn't been able to solve the Astros, who have won the last eight meetings between the clubs this season. Houston sits 3 1/2 games behind Texas in the AL West following a six-game road trip, but it has won 14 of its last 19 games at Minute Maid Park to vault into the postseason race. Reigning AL Pitcher of the Week Matt Shoemaker will look to halt the Astros' dominance in the series when he opposes fellow right-hander Lance McCullers.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (5-9, 4.08 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers (4-4, 3.61)

Shoemaker has struggled since his breakout season in 2014, when he posted a 16-4 record and 3.04 ERA, but he is coming off an overpowering performance in his first start of the second half. The 29-year-old Shoemaker posted his first career shutout, allowing six hits while striking out 13 in a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. He faced Houston six days apart last month, going 0-1 despite allowing three runs in 13 1/3 innings.

McCullers was a hard-luck loser last time out at Seattle, giving up one run and four hits while striking out eight over 5 1/3 innings. While he has fanned at least six in his last 10 starts, he's also allowed at least three walks in all but one appearance and has received no more than three runs of support in his last six turns. McCullers gave up one run in 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision against the Angels on June 22.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Astros 2B Jose Altuve owns a six-game hitting streak and is 12-for-17 over the last four to hike his majors-leading batting average to .357.

                            2. Angels DH/1B Albert Pujols, who has four homers in his last four games, is 11-for-27 against Houston this year.

                            3. Astros home run leader George Springer (21) is only 7-for-34 against Los Angeles this season.

                            PREDICTION: Angels 4, Astros 3

The Kansas City Royals visited the White House on Thursday to commemorate last year’s World Series crown, but they face an uphill climb to get back to the postseason. The reigning champions hope to break back above .500 and begin a second-half surge when they host the American League West-leading Texas Rangers for a three-game series beginning Friday.

The Royals are 9-16 over their last 25 games and haven’t won a three-game series in more than a month, but they hope to change their fortunes by catching the Rangers at the right time. Texas has lost three straight and 14 of its last 18, watching its AL West lead dwindle from 10 games to 3 1/2. After struggling at the plate while losing two of three to the Chicago Cubs coming out of the All-Star break, the Rangers gave up 24 runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week. Texas hopes ace Yu Darvish can change that in his second start since coming off the disabled list, as he faces left-hander Danny Duffy, who has been roughed up in three starts against the Rangers, going 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2-1, 3.15 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (5-1, 3.27)
Darvish returned after more than a month on the disabled list to face the Cubs on Saturday, allowing two runs over 4 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old gave up just two hits but ran up his pitch count quickly thanks to nine strikeouts and four walks. Darvish is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two starts against the Royals.
Duffy has won four straight decisions since a loss at Baltimore on June 6 and has recorded quality starts in six of his last nine outings. The 27-year-old wasn’t at his best Saturday at Detroit, allowing four runs over 6 1/3 innings, but was good enough to earn the win and fanned seven Tigers. Duffy has recorded at least seven strikeouts in five straight starts.

                                WALK-OFFS
                                1. The Rangers are hitting .286 against left-handers – the best mark in the majors through Wednesday’s games.
                                2. Royals 3B Cheslor Cuthbert is 15-for-36 with eight RBIs during a career-best 10-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 contests.
                                3. Kansas City pitchers have allowed home runs in 36 of the past 41 games and a total of 75 over that span.

                                PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Royals 3
