    Re: MLB Betting Info. 7/22

Preview: Rangers (55-41) at Royals (47-47)

    Game: 1
    Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
    Date: July 22, 2016 8:15 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals spent their off-day on Thursday at the White House as President Barack Obama honored the 2015 World Series champions.

The celebration is over and it is back to work Friday night as the Royals entertain the American League West-leading Texas Rangers for a three-game series.

But 2016 is not going well for the Royals, who are at .500 after 94 games and nine games behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians, who popped five home runs in winning 11-4 on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals have lost 11 of 16 games in July and have not won back-to-back games since June 29-30.

If they are to make it back to postseason, the Royals will need to reverse things quickly, which they did in 2014 when they ended a 29-year playoff drought by qualifying as a wild card and advancing to the World Series.

"They know it's in them," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "They don't need to go to the White House to be reaffirmed of that. They know what they have inside. They know what they have ahead of them. They know they've been through it before. They know they have to go through it again."

The Rangers, who won their division last year, are going through their own struggles. They were swept by the Los Angeles Angels and have lost 14 of 18. They also placed sluggers Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo on the disabled list Wednesday.

Fielder could miss the remainder of the season with herniated discs in his neck. He returned to Texas to be checked out Friday by Dr. Drew Dossett. Fielder had surgery on May 27, 2014, for herniated discs and missed the rest of the season. He was selected the 2015 AL Comeback Player of the Year after hitting .305 with 23 home runs and 98 RBIs.

Choo has lower back inflammation and received an injection Wednesday. This is his third stint this season on the disabled list. The previous were for a right calf strain and a left lateral strain.

Fielder, who started 79 games as the designated hitter and nine at first base, was hitting .212 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs. Choo had a .260 average with seven home runs and 17 RBIs but had appeared in only 33 games.

With Fielder out, Mitch Moreland will be getting more playing time.

"It's just one of those bad situations," Moreland told Texas Rangers.mlb.com. "For him and for us, it's a big loss, not only on the field but off. The presence he brings, the fun he brings. He always has a big smile on his face. It's something we'll miss. Somebody else has to step up. But I'm not putting any added pressure into the situation."

Outfielder Delino DeShields and infielder Hanser Alberto were recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to take their roster spots.

The Rangers and Royals, who share the same spring training complex in Surprise, Ariz., will square off seven times in the next 10 games.

Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish, who missed last season after Tommy John surgery and sat out five weeks this season with shoulder discomfort, will make his fifth start in the series opener and his second since coming off the disabled list.

Darvish lost his Saturday start 3-1 to the Chicago Cubs, giving up two runs, two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts while throwing 90 pitches. He is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two career starts against Kansas City.

Left-hander Danny Duffy will start for the Royals. Duffy, who began the season in the bullpen, is 5-1 with a 3.27 ERA and leads the club with 101 strikeouts. Since June 1, his 67 strikeouts top the AL.

Duffy is 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA in his three previous appearances against the Rangers.

Preview: Braves (33-63) at Rockies (44-51)

      Game: 2
      Venue: Coors Field
      Date: July 22, 2016 8:40 PM EDT

DENVER -- The Atlanta Braves have gone more than two years at Coors Field without walking off the field, exchanging high-fives and savoring a victory.

Indeed, the Colorado Rockies, who beat the Braves 7-3 in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night, have won seven straight games against the Braves at Coors Field, dating back to June 11, 2014. The Rockies' seven-game winning streak against the Braves at Coors Field is the longest in franchise history.

Julio Teheran will try to put an end to all that winning and continue his mastery over the Rockies when he makes his second consecutive start against them Friday night.

On Sunday, Teheran pitched seven scoreless innings against the Rockies at Turner Field but wasn't involved in the decision when the Braves scored in the ninth to win 1-0.

Teheran, who is 3-8 with a 2.79 ERA in 19 starts, is 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA against the Rockies in six starts.

Jon Gray, who matched Teheran with seven scoreless innings Sunday, will again oppose him. Gray is 5-4 with a 4.33 ERA in 16 starts. He has a team-leading 103 strikeouts and 32 walks in 95 2/3 innings. He leads the Rockies with 11 quality starts and has pitched at least seven innings a team-high seven times. This will be Gray's eighth start this season at Coors Field, where he is 3-0 with a 4.71 ERA and has allowed nine walks and 37 hits in 42 innings with 47 strikeouts.

The latter statistic is a crucial indicator at Coors Field to Gray, 24, who is in his first full season in the big leagues.

"I think that's really the way you have to live here," he said. "I don't necessarily think it's a sinker thing or a ground ball thing. I just think you have to miss bats and be unpredictable. Don't let guys eliminate (the possibility of seeing) pitches."

Gray has gotten considerably more comfortable as the season has gone on with his curveball, a pitch he started throwing in spring training.

"Even just show them the curveball first pitch for a strike -- they haven't my slider yet and I've already got a strike on them," Gray said. "So I've only got two more to go. I'm looking for a quality pitch and with two strikes, it's put-away time."

In addition to a mid-90s fastball, a sharp-breaking slider and his curveball, Gray also throws a changeup.

"I feel like every pitch is there right now," he said. "I feel like every pitch is a weapon."

One of the Braves hitters Gray will oppose is Nick Markakis, who had a rather unusual streak end Thursday night. On his final at-bat in the ninth inning, Markakis struck out, swinging and missing strike three from Jason Motte.

Markakis had gone 32 plate appearances without having swung and missed a pitch, a streak that began July 10 in the final game before the All-Star break and went seven full games and most of an eighth.

Markakis hasn't reached 100 strikeouts in a season since 2008 and entered this season averaging one strikeout every 6.9 at-bats, which is good in today's game. This season, Markakis is hitting .260 in 94 games with 23 doubles, five homers and 47 RBI. He has 58 strikeouts and is averaging one strikeout every 6.2 at-bats.

"He's got such a great eye at the plate," interim Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "He doesn't expand the strike zone. He's as disciplined a hitter as I've seen. It's almost like if he takes a pitch, it probably was a ball.

"He's got a really good eye, a good feel for the strike zone. It's like his at-bats, he really slows everything down to where he stays with balls a long time. Doesn't go out of the strike zone, obviously."

Preview: Rays (38-57) at Athletics (42-54)

        Game: 2
        Venue: Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum
        Date: July 22, 2016 10:05 PM EDT

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sean Manaea faced plenty of hurdles already in his rookie season.
The Oakland A's left-hander gave up 16 earned runs in his first three major league starts and had an 11.37 ERA. He had a scary trip to the disabled list because of a strained muscle in his pitching forearm.
Manaea dealt with a three-hour rain delay before a start in Minnesota. Then he was forced to make an emergency relief appearance Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays -- two days before a scheduled start -- after Oakland pitchers Rich Hill and Andrew Triggs were injured in the first inning.
"I was just in a panic getting up here (to the clubhouse) and getting dressed," Manaea said Thursday. "I didn't have my jersey on. I didn't have my belt. In my mind, I was just chilling and relaxing, just watching the game. The first inning comes around, and it's just crazy."
Manaea held the Blue Jays to two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out four and walking none in his second consecutive strong outing. He pitched seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros on July 10, allowing five hits, striking out six and walking none.
Manaea will try to continue his hot streak Friday against Tampa Bay when he makes his 13th start of the season, facing Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi in the second game of a four-game series.
"I just have to learn from every game, the ups and downs," Manaea said before the Rays' 7-3 victory in the series opener. "Obviously, I've had a lot of downs and some ups. I try to take something away from each game and think on that positive note. Not having the walks the past two games has been awesome. I'm really, really happy how my mechanics are, how I feel and my pitches. Everything feels good right now."
"It's been big for me not walking anybody and not giving up as many hits as I had been. Things are starting to click, starting to get the ball rolling. I'm just feeling really good about how things are turning out."
Odorizzi (4-5, 4.39 EA) is having an up-and-down season, but he comes into the game off a high note against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed two runs over six innings in a 5-2 victory on Sunday. He struck out seven and walked one.
"It was a good start to the second half," Odorizzi said. "First half was a little tough I think for everybody on our staff. It was good to get off in the second half on the right foot, get back to the way we're all capable of pitching. We'll hopefully just keep going from there."
Odorizzi is trying to recapture the consistency he had last season when he finished 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 starts.
"Last year I had consistency from start to finish, and this year there's just been some blips on the radar," he said. "As a whole group, as a staff, we've kind of had that same thing happen to us.
"I'm just ready to get back to consistency, going six, seven innings every time out. I'm feeling good. Everything health-wise is fantastic. I feel great. I'm just ready to go out and have a good second half.

          Friday's Diamond Notes
          By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Angels (8-2 last 10)

Los Angeles has started the second half in impressive fashion by sweeping each of its first two series at home against Chicago and Texas. The Angels’ offense blew up by plating at least seven runs in five of those six victories, while flying ‘over’ the total in all three wins over the Rangers. The Halos head to Houston on Friday to begin a three-game set with the Astros as Los Angeles has dropped eight of nine meetings this season. Matt Shoemaker takes the mound in the opener for L.A., as the right-hander is coming off a complete-game gem against the White Sox, striking out 13 batters in a 1-0 triumph last Saturday.

Coldest team: Giants (0-5 last five)

San Francisco finished the first half owning the best record in baseball, but the All-Star break disrupted the Giants’ momentum. Bruce Bochy’s team was swept in San Diego in its first series, followed by a pair of losses at Fenway Park against the Red Sox. San Francisco’s normally reliable pitching staff has allowed an average of 6.2 runs/game during this skid, while none of its starters have lasted past the sixth inning. Madison Bumgarner hopes to turn things around for the Giants, as he takes the ball in the opener against the Yankees in the Bronx. Bumgarner owns a 2.12 ERA this season, but San Francisco has compiled a 2-4 record in his past six starts.

Hottest pitcher: Danny Duffy, Royals (5-1, 3.27 ERA)

Kansas City returns home after visiting the White House to celebrate its 2015 World Series championship. Duffy has been the only consistent pitcher for the Royals, as the southpaw is 3-0 in his last four trips to the mound, including recent wins over the Tigers and Cardinals. In his last four starts, Duffy has walked only two batters, while striking out 30 in 29.1 innings of work. Kansas City hosts Texas as the Royals try to rebound from a pair of losses to the Indians. Duffy faces a Rangers’ squad that has lost six of their past seven games, while Texas owns a dreadful 3-11 record in its previous 14 road contests.

Coldest pitcher: Kyle Gibson, Twins (2-6, 5.12 ERA)

It’s been a rough season for the Minnesota rotation, as Gibson has allowed four earned runs in each of his past three outings. Gibson is coming off a 6-1 home defeat to the Indians in which Cleveland tagged him for 10 hits in six innings of work. The Twins’ right-hander has given up at least four earned runs in six of his last eight starts, including allowing five earned runs in 5.2 innings in a 15-4 loss to Boston on June 11. The Twins and Red Sox continue their four-game series at Fenway Park on Friday.

Biggest UNDER run: Mets (9-0 last nine)

New York is one of two teams that is riding a nine-game UNDER streak along with Baltimore, but we’ll focus on the Mets here. In its three-game series at Wrigley Field, the Mets scored a total of five runs, while plating two runs or fewer seven times during this nine-game UNDER stretch. Since late June, New York has posted an incredible 11-2 run to the UNDER away from Citi Field, but the Mets are 2-1 to the OVER in three games at Miami this season. New York travels to Miami to start a three-game series as Logan Verrett gets the start on Friday. Verrett has finished UNDER the total in each of his past three starts, while the Mets have scored (Surprise!) two runs or less in each of those outings.

Biggest OVER run: Indians (8-2-2 last 12)

The Indians head to Baltimore for a battle of division leaders as one of these total streaks has to end. Baltimore’s offense has struggled lately, resulting in a 9-0 mark to the UNDER the last nine games. Cleveland is coming off three consecutive OVERS at Kansas City, including putting up 18 runs in the final two victories. Trevor Bauer tries to bounce back against Baltimore after picking up a no-decision in a 6-4 defeat to the Orioles in late May as he heads to the hill. In Bauer’s seven road starts, the Indians are 4-1-2 to the UNDER, while Cleveland has cashed the OVER only once in his past seven starts overall.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Cardinals

St. Louis rallied from a 5-1 deficit to stun San Diego on Thursday, 6-5 to pull off a four-game sweep of the Padres. The Cardinals remain home to battle the Dodgers for a key three-game series between a pair of teams fighting for Wild Card positioning. Los Angeles handed Stephen Strasburg his first loss of the season on Thursday as the Dodgers beat the Nationals, 6-3 to take two of three from Washington.

The Dodgers grabbed two of three from the Cardinals at Chavez Ravine in mid-May as Brandon McCarthy makes his fourth start for Los Angeles. McCarthy has allowed three earned runs in three starts as the Dodgers own a 2-1 record in this stretch. Michael Wacha is winless in his past two trips to the mound for St. Louis following three consecutive victories as the Cardinals have scored at least seven runs in eight of nine team wins when he starts.

Betcha didn’t know: Julio Teheran has been dealt plenty of bad luck this season for Atlanta, in spite of compiling a 2.79 ERA. The Braves are 5-14 in his 19 starts this season, but Teheran helped lift Atlanta to a 1-0 victory over Colorado last Sunday. Atlanta is 10-3 to the UNDER the last 13 starts made by Teheran, including a 5-1 mark in his past six outings on the highway. The Braves and Rockies opened with an 11 total on Friday at Coors Field as the highest total Teheran has pitched to this season is 8 ½ against the Marlins on July 1 (which went OVER).

Biggest public favorite: Pirates (-230) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Rays (+110) at Athletics

Biggest line move: Yankees (+110 to -105) vs. Giants

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday, July 22, 2016, Opening Line Report
            by Alan Matthews

The frenzy before the Aug. 1 trading deadline has officially begun. The one weakness on the World Series betting favored Chicago Cubs is their bullpen, specifically a situational lefty. The Cubs have been linked to both excellent Yankees lefties, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman. I would think the chances of getting one of those two has lessened now that the Cubs landed Mariners lefty Mike Montgomery on Wednesday for two minor-leaguers. Seems like a great trade for the Cubs as Montgomery has excelled against lefty hitters this season but also can start -- something that might come into play next year for Chicago. Meanwhile, Cubs boss Theo Epstein told anyone who would listen that he wasn't trading Kyle Schwarber in any deal, and that's who the Yankees kept demanding. Epstein didn't give up any top prospects in the Montgomery deal, although he said he's not done yet.

            Giants at Yankees (+119, 7.5)

This is nationally televised by the MLB Network and should have live betting at sportsbooks. Of course, the Giants also used to be in New York City before moving to the West Coast for the 1958 season. These teams have played just nine total interleague games and not since 2013. The last time Giants lefty ace Madison Bumgarner pitched in an American League park was June 30 in Oakland, and Giants manager Bruce Bochy shocked everyone by passing on having the DH and letting Bumgarner hit. But Bochy says he'll be using the DH in this game with Bumgarner (10-5, 2.12) pitching. He comes off a rare non-quality start, allowing four runs and seven hits over six innings in a loss at San Diego. This will be Bumgarner's first career start at Yankee Stadium. Starlin Castro knows him well from his NL days, going 11-for-26. Chase Headley is 10-for-33 with three homers and 12 RBIs off Bumgarner. New York was thinking about giving ace Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 3.15) an extra day off instead of going here, but he now is expected to start. He hasn't lost since June 11 and beat Boston last time out, allowing one run and three hits over six innings. Tanaka hasn't faced the Giants.

Key trends: The Giants are 5-2 in Bumgarner's past seven on the road. The Yankees are 8-1 in Tanaka's past nine at home. The "over/under" has gone under in seven of Bumgarner's past nine overall. The under is 5-1 in Tanaka's past six interleague starts.

            Early lean: Giants and under.

            Indians at Orioles (-107, 9)

Baltimore's Dylan Bundy (2-2, 3.70) once was arguably the top pitching prospect in baseball, but injuries always cropped up. He has been solid in relief this season for the Orioles and made his first major-league start on Sunday against Tampa Bay, allowing four runs and five hits (three homers) over 3.1 innings in a loss. I'm sure he will be quite jacked up for his first home start here. Bundy has thrown 1.1 scoreless innings of relief this year vs. the Tribe. Speaking of former top pitching prospects, the Indians go with Trevor Bauer (7-3, 3.36), who won the NCAA Golden Spikes Award while with UCLA as the nation's top player in 2011. Bauer has allowed nine runs over 11.2 innings in his past two starts. He took a no-decision vs. Baltimore on May 27, allowing three runs and nine hits in six innings. Manny Machado hammers him, going 5-for-8 with two homers.

Key trends: The Indians are 1-4 in Bauer's past six vs. the AL East. The Orioles are 1-4 in their past five in Game 1 of a series. The under is 4-1-2 in Bauer's past seven.

            Early lean: Orioles and under.

Twins at Red Sox (-184, 10.5)

Boston is going to be down to its third closer with Koji Uehara being placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with a right pectoral strain. He had been largely handling the job since Craig Kimbrel went on the DL a couple of weeks ago and will remain there at least a few more weeks. So presumably the ninth-inning job for now belongs to Brad Ziegler, who was recently acquired from Arizona. The Red Sox go with young lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 7.18) on the mound. He was sent down in late June after struggling in the majors but was brought back up to start Saturday at the Yankees and pitched great, allowing one run and four hits over seven innings. Rodriguez took a no-decision at Minnesota on June 11, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. Brian Dozier is 2-for-4 off him with a homer. The Twins' Kyle Gibson (2-6, 5.12) has allowed four runs in three straight starts. He also pitched in that June 11 game and took the loss, allowing five runs in 5.2 innings. Jackie Bradley Jr. is 1-for-4 off him with a three-run homer.

Key trends: The Twins are 1-6 in Gibson's past seven vs. the AL East. The Sox are 5-1 in Rodriguez's past six at home vs. teams with a losing record.

Early lean: Red Sox and over.

Mariners at Blue Jays (-155, 9)

Toronto expects to have All-Star outfielder Michael Saunders back from a personal matter on Friday. He missed Wednesday's game and the Jays were off Thursday. Saunders is a contender for AL Comeback Player of the Year, hitting .286 with 16 homers and 43 RBIs after barely playing in 2015 due to injury. The Jays face Mariners lefty James Paxton (2-4, 4.56). He originally took the injured Felix Hernandez's spot but will stay in the rotation for now with King Felix back. But not for long if Paxton allows six runs over five innings as he did last time out vs. Houston. He's 1-1 with a 10.38 ERA in two career starts vs. Toronto. Josh Donaldson is 2-for-9 with a double off him. Toronto's Marco Estrada (5-3, 2.93) was named an All-Star but was on the DL. He'll be activated to make his first start since July 2. Seattle's Nelson Cruz is 4-for-5 career off him with a homer.

Key trends: The Mariners are 2-8 in Paxton's past 10. The Jays are 5-1 in Estrada's past six at home vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 5-1 in Estrada's past six in Game 1 of a series.

Early lean: Blue Jays and under.

            Cubs at Brewers (+158, 8.5)

Potential letdown series for the Cubs after playing big series against the Texas Rangers and New York Mets out of the break. Although this will basically be a home series with probably 80 percent Cubs fans in attendance. Chicago finally thinks it will get leadoff hitter and center fielder Dexter Fowler back from the DL. The Cubs were also hoping that last Friday but decided to give him a little bit more minor-league rehab. Fowler suffered a right hamstring injury on June 18. The Cubs start Jason Hammel (8-5, 3.34). Chicago had lost six straight of his starts before Hammel allowed one run and three hits over six innings vs. Texas last weekend. Hammel lost in Milwaukee on May 19, allowing four runs in six innings. Ryan Braun is 8-for-23 career off him with two homers. Milwaukee goes with Jimmy Nelson (6-7, 3.39). He shut out the Reds over seven innings last time out. Nelson is 0-1 with a 0.71 ERA in two starts vs. the Cubs this year. Javier Baez is 3-for-6 off him with two RBIs. Fowler is 2-for-12 off him with a homer.

Key trends: The Cubs are 0-4 in Hammel's past four on the road. The Brewers are 1-9 in Nelson's past 10 vs. teams with a winning record. The over is 4-1 in Hammel's past five on the road. The under is 4-1 in Nelson's past five.

            Early lean: Brewers and under.

'Orioles and Indians square off in Baltimore'

Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians get it on in a three game set at Camden Yards this weekend.

Orioles are off a lackluster 3-4 road swing platting 2.0 runs/game. A.L. East. Central leading Tribe head into Baltimore having won four of six on this current extended nine game road swing crossing a whopping 6.0 runs/game.

Orioles open the series handing the ball to Dylan Bundy. The righthander holding his own out of the bullpen didn't exactly cover himself in glory in his first start of the season last Sunday. Bundy got crushed for three yard ball, four runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. Bundy has never faced Orioles. On the flipside, we have Trevor Bauer who logged 6.0 innings of 4 run ball last Saturday walking off with a no-decion in Indians loss at Minnesota.

Orioles handing starting duties to Bundy does not instill a lot of confidence. However, some very telling baseball betting stats leap out favoring Baltimore. Orioles love home cookin' sporting the leagues best home record at 33-14 and are currently ridding a 7-1 stretch in front of the home audience. Additionally, Orioles have a habit of making life miserable for Indians. Orioles took 2 of 3 earlier this season and have won 8 of 10 meetings vs Tribe including 2-0 with Bauer starting for Cleveland. Sportsbooks have this one a Pick'm with the total set a 9.0 runs.

After being linked by consecutive picks in the 2011 draft, Dylan Bundy and fellow right-hander Trevor Bauer will follow each other's path once again on Friday - to the pitcher's mound. The respective third and fourth overall picks of the draft five years ago will be on display when Bundy and the Baltimore Orioles host the Cleveland Indians in the opener of their three-game series.

The American League Central-leading Indians have flexed their muscles by erupting for 36 runs over their last six games (4-2), a stretch during which they took two of three from reigning World Series-champion Kansas City. Carlos Santana, who is batting .342 in his last 20 games, belted one of Cleveland's six homers in an 11-4 rout of the Royals on Wednesday. The injury-riddled and flu-ridden Orioles got back to semblance of health on Thursday, posting a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees to snap a four-game losing streak. J.J. Hardy highlighted his second straight multi-hit performance and fifth in nine contests with a two-run single but is 0-for-5 lifetime versus Bauer.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (7-3, 3.36) vs. Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (2-2, 3.70)

Bauer hopes his success away from Progressive Field continues on Friday as the 25-year-old owns a 5-1 record and 2.78 ERA on the road. Bauer hasn't been as fortunate in three career encounters with Baltimore, as he lost the first two meetings before settling for a no-decision on May 27, when he allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings. Bauer also received a no-decision in his last outing on Saturday after permitting four runs and seven hits in six frames versus Minnesota.

Bundy's first career start wasn't one for the clips on Sunday as the 23-year-old surrendered three homers in 3 1/3 innings en route to a 5-2 setback at Tampa Bay. The four runs matched the sum total of his previous eight relief outings. Bundy will receive his second look at Cleveland this season after yielding one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief in a 6-4 triumph on May 27.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Baltimore LF Nolan Reimold is 1-for-16 in the last six games in which he recorded a plate appearance.

                  2. Cleveland SS Francisco Lindor has recorded two homers, four RBIs and five runs scored in his last four contests.

                  3. Orioles CF Adam Jones (back spasms) and C Matt Wieters (foot) are considered day-to-day, manager Buck Showalter told MASN.com on Thursday.

                  PREDICTION: Indians 4, Orioles 2

The San Francisco Giants owned the best record in the majors at the All-Star break, but they have stumbled out of the gate with five consecutive losses to open the second half. The Giants will be looking to ace Madison Bumgarner to end the slide when they open a three-game series against the New York Yankees on Friday night.

While Bumgarner will make his debut at Yankee Stadium and first start versus New York, one bit of drama was removed when San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy decided to use the designated hitter instead of having his star left-hander bat for himself. "I'll probably DH one of our left-handed hitters. Our bench is deeper now," Bochy said. "Plus, it could be really hot. We want to keep him off the field." The Yankees had allowed only three runs during a four-game winning streak before dropping the finale of a four-game set to Baltimore on Thursday. Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, who has not lost since June 11, will oppose Bumgarner in what looms as a marquee pitching matchup.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (10-5, 2.12 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 3.15)

Bumgarner lost his third straight road start to open the second half, permitting four runs on seven hits -- including a pair of homers -- in a 4-1 setback at San Diego. He was overpowering in his previous outing, striking out 14 batters in a masterful one-hit shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bumgarner has allowed 10 homers in nine road starts and takes an 8-7 mark with a 3.75 ERA in interleague play into Friday's contest.

Tanaka bounced back from his shortest outing of the season by limiting Boston to one run on three hits over six innings on Sunday to improve to 4-0 over his last six starts. Although he was hit hard in both no-decisions during his unbeaten run, New York's offense bailed him out on both occasions and has produced 45 runs in that span. Tanaka has made 10 starts at Yankee Stadium, logging a 3-1 mark and 4.71 ERA.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. New York's bullpen has churned out 31 consecutive scoreless innings.

                      2. Giants C Buster Posey is 1-for-12 lifetime versus New York.

                      3. Yankees 3B Chase Headley did not start the past two games after his 4-year-old son had complications from a surgical procedure.

                      PREDICTION: Giants 3, Yankees 2

The Pittsburgh Pirates have good reason to believe they can make a second-half charge up the standings but they must capitalize on a soft schedule. Five of Pittsburgh's next six opponents sport sub-.500 records, starting with a three-game series against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

The Pirates opened an eight-game homestand by taking two of three from Milwaukee to remain three games out of the second wild card in the National League. Another reason for optimism for Pittsburgh is the health of right-hander Gerrit Cole, who on Friday will make his second start since spending five weeks on the disabled list. After completing a 2-5 homestand, the Phillies face a grueling upcoming schedule, due in part to the invasion of the Democratic National Convention in the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia, which could be a popular trade partner as the deadline approaches, plays 16 of its next 19 away from home.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WCAU (Philadelphia), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Zach Eflin (2-3, 4.14 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (5-5, 3.11)

Elfin has quickly turned things around since his wretched major-league debut in Toronto on June 14, when he was walloped for nine runs (eight earned) over 2 2/3 innings. He registered his fifth consecutive quality start in a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets last time out, giving up three runs over six innings. The 22-year-old has been steady on the road since the Toronto debacle with six earned runs allowed in three starts.

Cole turned in a shaky performance in his first start since returning from a strained triceps, lasting only four innings and yielding five runs (four earned) in a 6-0 loss at Washington. Cole is winless over his last five turns, although he has not surrendered a home run in that span. Cole beat the Phillies twice last season, allowing three earned runs, to boost his career mark to 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA against them.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. LHP Francisco Liriano on Thursday became Pittsburgh's first starter to notch an out in the seventh inning since June 25.

                          2. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera is mired in a 4-for-41 slump over his last 11 games.

                          3. Pirates OF Gregory Polanco had two hits Thursday after going 2-for-22 in his previous six games.

GAME: San Diego Padres (41-55) at Washington Nationals (57-39)
                              DATE/TIME: Friday, July 22 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia

The Washington Nationals have dropped three of their last four contests and suddenly find themselves with a challenger breathing down their neck in the National League East. The first-place Nationals look to return to their winning ways on Friday, when they open a three-game series against the visiting San Diego Padres.

Daniel Murphy extended his hitting streak to four games with an RBI single in Thursday's 6-3 setback against the Los Angeles Dodgers and recorded four hits - including a homer - and three RBIs as Washington split a four-game series with San Diego at Petco Park in mid-June. Like Murphy, Bryce Harper also homered and drove in three runs in an 8-5 win over the Padres on June 16 and is batting a staggering .423 with six blasts and 24 RBIs in 20 career contests versus San Diego. The Padres began their 10-game road trip with a thud, as they saw a late four-run lead evaporate Thursday en route to a four-game sweep by St. Louis. Yangervis Solarte's solo shot in the eighth inning extended San Diego's franchise record to 19 straight games with a homer, but he is just 7-for-37 in 11 career encounters with Washington.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Luis Perdomo (3-4, 7.36 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (9-5, 2.82)

With Drew Pomeranz traded to Boston, Perdomo is going to get an opportunity to take his lumps while remaining the starting rotation. The 23-year-old Dominican allowed three runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision versus San Francisco on Saturday. Perdomo will be making his 24th appearance in the major leagues and first against Washington.

Roark improved to 3-0 in his last five outings on Saturday after scattering five hits over eight innings in a 6-0 rout of Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old has permitted just six runs and 27 hits in that stretch (31 1/3 frames). Roark continued his good fortune against San Diego on June 16, as he escaped with the victory despite yielding four runs and seven hits in six innings of Washington's 8-5 win.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Washington OF Jayson Werth has reached base in 25 consecutive games.

                              2. San Diego LF and Virginia native Melvin Upton Jr. has struck out at least once in 14 straight contests.

                              3. Nationals 2B Trea Turner, who was a first-round pick of San Diego in 2014, has collected three RBIs and scored as many runs during his five-game hitting streak.

                              PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Padres 2
