    Preview: Rays at Rockies

    Current Conditions - Denver

    Some clouds 64 °F
    Wind: S 5.8
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (36-57) at Colorado Rockies (43-50)
    DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 20 - 3:10 PM EST
    WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays have a chance to post their first road series victory in more than a month when they visit the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game set. The Rays snapped an 11-game losing streak away from home with a 10-1 romp following a lengthy rain delay on Tuesday.

Evan Longoria is in the midst of a torrid stretch for reeling Tampa Bay, which has won only five of its last 30 games. Longoria launched a towering home run in Tuesday's victory and is 6-for-13 with three blasts, two triples and six RBIs over his last three contests. Colorado's Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-4 on Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to a season high-tying 11 games. Rays right-hander Chris Archer, who leads the majors with 13 losses and is 0-6 in his last seven starts, will oppose Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa in the series finale.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (4-13, 4.68 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Jorge De La Rosa (6-6, 5.50)

Archer's drought continued when he allowed four runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings in a 4-3 loss to Baltimore last time out to remain winless since June 6. He has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six turns and isn't getting much help from an offense that's produced 16 runs during his seven-start skid. Archer's numbers away from home are awful, as he is 3-6 with a 6.75 ERA in 10 road starts.

His high ERA notwithstanding, De La Rosa registered his sixth consecutive quality start since rejoining the rotation by holding Atlanta to two runs and eight hits over six innings on Friday. It was the third straight road turn for De La Rosa, who has yielded only one run in his last 15 frames at Coors Field. De La Rosa is 1-1 with a bloated 10.13 ERA in two starts against the Rays, but he hasn't faced them since 2009.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Longoria is 16-for-41 over his last 10 games.

    2. Rockies rookie SS Trevor Story is 4-for-5 with a pair of homers and three walks in the series.

    3. Rays 1B Steve Pearce was 2-for-5 with a two-run blast on Tuesday in his return from the disabled list.

    PREDICTION: Rockies 5, Rays 4

        Current Conditions - Oakland

        Wind: N 4.6
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Houston Astros (50-44) at Oakland Athletics (42-52)

        WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California

The Oakland Athletics look to ride the momentum of their comeback victory and complete a three-game sweep when they host the American League West-rival Houston Astros for the finale on Wednesday afternoon. Oakland fell into a three-run hole Tuesday but scored two in the seventh inning and one in the ninth before Josh Reddick delivered an RBI infield single a frame later to finish the comeback.

Rookie Ryon Healy continued to contribute, recording two hits and two RBIs to improve to 6-for-15 with six RBIs over his last four games after going 0-for-4 in his major league debut. While Oakland improved to 4-1 on its 10-game homestand, Houston fell to 2-3 on its six-game road trip. Despite the disappointing loss, Jose Altuve remained on fire since the All-Star break, finishing a home run shy of the cycle while producing his second 4-for-5 performance in three games. Altuve has gone 12-for-21 over his last five games while Carlos Correa is 6-for-17 in the same span.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Doug Fister (9-6, 3.64 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (1-4, 5.54)

Fister halted his three-start losing streak Friday, allowing three runs and five hits in five innings at Seattle. The 32-year-old Californian has won five of his last six decisions on the road and has given up three earned runs or fewer in all but one of his 10 outings away from home this season. Fister is 7-7 lifetime and 2-1 this season against the Athletics, including a victory at Oakland on May 1 in which he yielded one run over 6 2/3 innings.

After a solid first month in the major leagues, Mengden has taken a nosedive in his second. The 23-year-old Texan did not get the results he deserved in June, going 1-3 despite allowing two runs in three of his four starts and three in the other while working at least six innings on three occasions. Mengden has surrendered 17 runs over 13 1/3 frames in three turns in July, including a 3 1/3-inning outing against Toronto on Friday in which he was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The Athletics placed RHP Andrew Triggs (shin) on the disabled list, recalled LHP Daniel Coulombe from Triple-A Nashville and sent INF Tyler Ladendorf to the same club.

        2. Houston RF George Springer established a new career high with his 21st homer of the year Tuesday.

        3. Oakland C Josh Phegley has begun participating in baseball activities after undergoing surgery to remove a cruciate ligament cyst in his right knee earlier this month.

All-Star Edwin Encarnacion is closing in on his fifth consecutive 30-homer campaign and looks to go deep for the fourth time in his last seven games when the Toronto Blue Jays conclude a two-game series against the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon. Encarnacion launched a three-run blast in Tuesday's 5-1 victory and is tied for third place in the major leagues with 25 homers.

Encarnacion leads the majors with 84 RBIs and has a solid chance at surpassing his previous career high of 111 set last season. Blue Jays All-Star Michael Saunders was hitless in three at-bats in the opener and is aiming to emerge from a six-game funk during which he is 1-for-20. Toronto has won 10 of its last 13 contests and sits in third place in the American League East - 1 1/2 games behind division-leading Baltimore and one-half back of second-place Boston. Fading Arizona, which has dropped 14 of its last 18 games, was 0-of-10 with runners in scoring position during Tuesday's loss.

He served up three homers in 4 2/3 innings against Oakland in his last turn, when he gave up seven runs - six earned - and nine hits. Stroman is 4-3 with a 5.34 ERA in nine road starts this season.

Corbin hasn't pitched more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his last four starts and has posted an 8.35 ERA during that span. He was torched for seven runs - six earned - and seven hits in four frames of a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last turn. Corbin's most-recent victory occurred in Toronto on June 21, when he gave up two runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings in his lone career start against the Blue Jays.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke (oblique) threw from flat ground on Tuesday, but manager Chip Hale said it is unlikely that the ace will return within the next 10 days.

            2. Toronto RF Jose Bautista (toe) is slated to begin a rehab stint at Single-A Dunedin on Wednesday, followed by three games at Triple-A Buffalo, and is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays on Monday.

            3. Arizona LF David Peralta (back) could be activated from the disabled list by the middle of next week.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez takes the mound for the first time in seven-plus weeks Wednesday when the Mariners conclude a three-game series against the visiting Chicago White Sox. Hernandez suffered a calf injury during a start against the Minnesota Twins on May 27 and will be activated from the disabled list prior to the contest.

The Mariners were nine games above .500 when Hernandez was injured and went 19-28 during his absence. "I was going crazy (in the early) weeks when I wasn't with the team," Hernandez told reporters. "It was the worst time of my career, but I'm good now. I'm ready to go." Chicago halted a five-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory Tuesday after totaling just four runs during its skid. White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier belted a two-run homer — his 27th — while left fielder Melky Cabrera and second baseman Brett Lawrie hit solo shots.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Miguel Gonzalez (2-5, 4.40 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (4-4, 2.86)

Gonzalez has lost four of his last five decisions and gave up seven or more runs in two of the outings. He lost to the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn when he allowed four runs (three earned) and five hits in six innings. Gonzalez is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners and has controlled Robinson Cano (4-for-27, one homer) while struggling with Adam Lind (8-for-18, one homer).

Hernandez has won 12 or more games in each of the past seven seasons and will need a strong final two-plus months to get there again. He limited opposing batters to a .217 average in his first 10 starts but his strikeouts-to-walks ratio (53 to 26) is on pace to be the worst of his stellar career. Hernandez is just 4-6 with a 3.80 ERA in 16 career starts against Chicago.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Cano slugged his 22nd homer in Tuesday's loss — his highest output in three seasons with the club.

                2. Chicago 1B Jose Abreu is mired in a 19-game homerless drought.

                3. Seattle SS Ketel Marte (viral infection) sat out for the second straight game.

PREDICTION: Mariners 4, White Sox 2

                    Preview: Orioles at Yankees

                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Baltimore Orioles (53-39) at New York Yankees (47-46)
                    DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 20 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York

A critical 10-game homestand was expected to tell the tale if the New York Yankees would be buyers or sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. The Yankees have received positive results thus far and will vie for their fourth straight win and sixth in eight outings on Wednesday when they play the third contest of a four-game series versus the Baltimore Orioles.

Starlin Castro homered and drove in four runs in Tuesday's 7-1 triumph to improve to 5-for-11 during New York's winning streak. The 26-year-old Dominican has turned it up a notch when facing Wednesday starter Yovani Gallardo, against whom he is batting .390 in his career. While the Yankees ignited their offense to move within 6 1/2 games of the American League East-leading Orioles, the latter has failed to find a spark of late by mustering just four runs and 17 hits total during its three-game losing streak. J.J. Hardy is 0-for-6 in this series but could get untracked against struggling Michael Pineda, versus whom he is 7-for-15 with three homers and four RBIs in his career.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 5.77 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Michael Pineda (3-9, 5.56)

Gallardo received his third straight no-decision on Friday after allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings against Tampa Bay. The 30-year-old saw his pitch count elevate after issuing four walks for the second straight outing and 20 over his last six. Gallardo owns a 1-1 career mark versus the Yankees with a 5.60 ERA as he's allowed 11 runs on 17 hits in 17 2/3 innings.

Pineda permitted five earned runs in each of his last two outings and is 0-3 with a 4.46 ERA in his last six starts, but the 27-year-old Dominican will receive the call on Wednesday due to a lack of options, manager Joe Girardi said. Pineda was taken deep three times versus Boston on Friday and has allowed 18 homers in as many starts this season. FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reported the Marlins were interested in dealing for Pineda, who told NJ.com, "I love my team. I want to stay here and help my team win."

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Baltimore RF Mark Trumbo is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in his last three contests on the heels of a 10-game hitting streak.

                    2. New York LF Brett Gardner is 6-for-16 with a homer and two runs scored in his last four contests.

                    3. Orioles OF Joey Rickard is 4-for-10 with an RBI double in his last three games.

                    PREDICTION: Orioles 5, Yankees 4

The Los Angeles Dodgers missed a pair of opportunities to gain ground on the San Francisco Giants in the National League West with one-run losses in Arizona over the weekend and are determined not to let any more chances go to waste with the road trip hitting the East coast. The Dodgers took the series opener to gain one game and will try to take another when they visit the Washington Nationals in the second of a three-game set on Wednesday.

Los Angeles picked on Reynaldo Lopez in his first career start on Tuesday and breezed to an 8-4 win in the series opener, cooling off the Nationals and pulling within 4 1/2 games in the West as the Giants were falling in Boston. The Dodgers got some bad news when ace Clayton Kershaw was shut down from rehab due to continuing lower back pain and are trying to keep things tight in the West until the Cy Young winner returns or help arrives at the trade deadline. Washington’s pitching staff allowed two or fewer runs in six straight games before Lopez’s rough debut and had its lead in the NL East trimmed to 4 1/2 games over the Miami Marlins. The Nationals are looking ahead to the trade deadline as well and are in the market for help in the outfield and at the back end of the bullpen.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Bud Norris (5-7, 4.17 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (5-8, 4.70)

Norris is 2-0 in three starts with Los Angeles since coming over in a deal from the Atlanta Braves, but needed some help from his offense on Friday. The veteran from California was reached for four runs and eight hits in five innings but managed to grab a win in a game the Dodgers took 13-7. Norris started against Washington for the Braves on April 11 and was ripped for five runs and nine hits in five innings to suffer the loss.

Gonzalez needed 108 pitches to get through 5 2/3 innings at the New York Mets in his final start before the break on July 10 but still managed to get the win while surrendering two runs – both on solo homers. The Florida native has issued four walks in four of his last six starts and has not completed seven innings in that span. Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. The Dodgers placed LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list and will recall 19-year-old LHP Julio Urias to start on Thursday.

                        2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon sat out the last two games with flu-like symptoms and is day-to-day.

                        3. Los Angeles SS Corey Seager missed Tuesday’s game with a stomach virus and is day-to-day.

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Jeremy Hellickson may not just be facing the visiting Miami Marlins on Wednesday - he also might be auditioning for them as well. With the trade deadline on the horizon, the 29-year-old reportedly has piqued the interest of the Marlins (among others) as the team attempts to bolster the rotation in its quest for a postseason berth.

Christian Yelich has been a thorn in the side of Hellickson by going 5-for-11 in his career, and did his best to fluster the Phillies in Tuesday's 2-1 victory in 10 innings. The 24-year-old continued his standout season by belting a solo homer to extend his hitting streak to six games and adding an RBI single in the 10th to lift his average to .369 in 20 career contests at Citizens Bank Park. While Miami has won three in a row and seven of its last eight to keep the heat on first-place Washington in the National League East, Philadelphia has dropped four of five on the heels of a strong stretch heading into the All-Star break. Rookie Tommy Joseph went deep for the second straight contest on Tuesday and is 7-for-14 with three solo homers in four games versus Miami this season, with a solo blast highlighting a 3-for-3 effort versus Wednesday starter Wei-Yin Chen.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Wei-Yin Chen (5-3, 4.90 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jeremy Hellickson (6-7, 4.03)

Chen has been struggled mightily to keep the ball in the park this season (19 homers in 18 starts), with two blasts in the fourth inning on Friday causing him to settle for a no-decision at St. Louis. The soon-to-be 31-year-old was taken deep on two occasions over two starts versus Philadelphia in May, with Chen going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA. The veteran hurler allowed four runs on 11 hits in five innings of a no-decision on May 6 and yielded three runs in six frames of a 3-1 loss to the Phillies 11 nights later.

Hellickson suffered his first loss in nearly one month on Friday as he allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of a 5-3 setback to the New York Mets. The two homers he allowed accounted for the first time he's been taken deep since yielding seven homers during a five-start stretch (May 30-June 20). Hellickson has faced Miami on two occasions this season, settling for a no-decision after logging 5 1/3 innings on May 7 before picking up the win following six strong innings in a 4-2 victory 11 nights later.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco is 1-for-21 in his last five games, including 0-for-10 with six strikeouts in this series.

                            2. Miami C J.T. Realmuto is 8-for-25 with six runs scored in his last six contests.

                            3. Excluding a four-hit performance on July 10, Phillies C Cameron Rupp is 2-for-24 with nine strikeouts during a seven-game stretch.

                            PREDICTION: Marlins 5, Phillies 2

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (39-52) at Pittsburgh Pirates (48-45)

The Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t knocking the cover off the ball and are suddenly answering questions about the back end of the bullpen, but at least they’re winning. The Pirates will try to push their winning streak to three straight and clinch a series win when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the second of a three-game series on Wednesday.

The Pirates have totaled six runs in their last four games, and one of those contests lasted 18 innings. Pittsburgh All-Star closer Mark Melancon blew a save at Washington on Sunday before the team eventually won on Starling Marte’s homer in the 18th, and he blew another opportunity on Tuesday only to watch Josh Harrison triple and score on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the 3-2 victory. The Brewers aren’t in the postseason race and are having their own problems scoring with two or fewer runs in four of the last six contests. Milwaukee went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday and made things worse with middle infielders Jonathan Villar and Scooter Gennett combining for three errors.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Chase Anderson (4-10, 5.44 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Jeff Locke (8-5, 5.26)

Anderson is hoping a deep rut that he found himself in prior to the break does not carry over into the second half. The 28-year-old suffered the loss in each of his last four starts and failed to make it through five innings in any of those turns, allowing a total of 17 earned runs on 22 hits and 15 walks in 14 2/3 innings. Anderson is seeing Pittsburgh for the first time this season and is 1-6 with a 6.29 ERA in nine starts on the road.

Locke could use a change in momentum as well after allowing five runs and eight hits in four innings at St. Louis in his last start on July 6. The New Hampshire native worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen on July 10 and could find himself back among the relievers with the team trying to open spots for some promising young arms. Locke struggled with his control against Milwaukee on April 15, when he issued seven walks and was charged with three runs – two earned – over 4 2/3 frames.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. Pirates RF Gregory Polanco (hamstring) returned to the lineup for the first time since July 8 on Tuesday and went 0-for-3 with a walk.

                                2. Milwaukee 3B Hernan Perez is 4-for-9 with five RBIs in his last three games.

                                3. Pittsburgh 1B John Jaso is 1-for-12 with five strikeouts since the break.

                                PREDICTION: Pirates 9, Brewers 8
