    Preview: Brewers at Pirates

    Current Conditions - Pittsburgh

    Sunny 72 °F
    Wind: N 4.6
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (39-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (47-45)
    DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST
    WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

A series in Washington that could have been a disaster was saved in the 18th inning Sunday, and the Pittsburgh Pirates will try to build off the momentum of that victory when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday. The Pirates got Monday off after battling to the 2-1 victory, which avoided a three-game sweep.

Pittsburgh appeared poised for a surge up the standings before bridging the All-Star break with a three-game slide and is hoping Sunday’s dramatic win can put it back on the path to postseason. Starling Marte provided the dramatic moment with his solo home run in the top of the 18th, but the Pirates pitching staff was the star with only All-Star closer Mark Melancon surrendering a run. The Brewers are poised for a run at the trade deadline as the rebuilding effort continues, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy is the big prize. Lucroy did not do much to help his trade value on Sunday, when his passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to score in a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati.

    TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Junior Guerra (6-2, 3.06 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (2-1, 3.86)

Guerra had a stretch of three straight dominant outings come to an end when he was reached for three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to suffer a loss against St. Louis on July 10. The 31-year-old rookie allowed a total of two runs in 22 1/3 innings over his previous three outings. Guerra is making his first career start against the Pirates and 2-0 with a 3.44 ERA on the road.

Taillon was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue after a start on June 29, and the Pirates are being cautious with one of their top prospects. The former No. 2 overall draft pick struck out six and did not walk a batter while allowing one run in six innings at Seattle in that June 29 effort. Taillon is seeing Milwaukee for the first time and did not fare well in his lone previous appearance against an NL Central rival, surrendering three home runs in four innings at the Chicago Cubs in his lone loss.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Brewers UTL Hernan Perez (left foot) had x-rays come back negative and is day-to-day.

    2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen went 0-for-8 on Sunday and has struck out 12 times in his last eight games.

    3. Milwaukee SS Jonathan Villar recorded seven stolen bases in his last eight games.

    PREDICTION: Pirates 6, Brewers 4

        Preview: Giants at Red Sox

        Current Conditions - Boston

        Partly sunny 80 °F
        Wind: WNW 13.8
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: San Francisco Giants (57-36) at Boston Red Sox (51-39)
        DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:10 PM EST
        WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants still own the best record in the majors but came out of the All-Star break a little sluggish while getting swept in a three-game series at San Diego. Things don’t get any easier when the road trip moves across the country for the start of a quick two-game series at the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.

The Giants struggled to hit in two of the three games at San Diego, including a 5-3 loss on Sunday in which veteran journeyman Edwin Jackson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and managed to fall on a walk-off balk in Saturday’s 7-6 setback. San Francisco is still not feeling much pressure in the National League West with the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 1/2 games back but is in a tough stretch of schedule with three games at the New York Yankees to close out the trip and a four-game series against NL East-leading Washington looming at the end of the month. The Red Sox had a six-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss at the Yankees on Sunday but are still riding high with three solid starting pitching performances in a row to begin the second half. Rick Porcello will try to keep that run going on Tuesday before Drew Pomeranz makes his team debut on Wednesday.

        TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jake Peavy (5-7, 5.09 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (11-2, 3.66)

Peavy is making his first start in Boston since being traded to San Francisco prior to the deadline in 2014. The former Cy Young Award winner was part of the Red Sox World Series-winning team in 2013 but is having some trouble recapturing that magic of late. Peavy lasted 4 1/3 innings in his final start before the break and failed to complete five innings in two of his last three turns.

Porcello has not lost since May 17 and picked up wins in three straight starts prior to the All-Star break. The New Jersey native finished the first half strong by holding Tampa Bay to one run and six hits while notching five strikeouts without a walk in seven innings on July 9. The career American Leaguer is making his fourth lifetime start against the Giants and was reached for three runs and five hits in six innings without factoring in the decision at San Francisco on June 7.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Red Sox RF Mookie Betts went 0-for-4 on Sunday to snap a 13-game hitting streak.

        2. San Francisco RF Hunter Pence (hamstring) left a rehab assignment after three innings on Saturday and sat out Sunday due to a possible aggravation of the injury.

        3. Boston 1B Hanley Ramirez is 1-for-13 with four strikeouts in the last three games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 8, Giants 4

            Wind: N 0.0
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Minnesota Twins (33-59) at Detroit Tigers (49-44)
            DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:10 PM EST
            WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan

The Detroit Tigers have received some solid pitching since the All-Star break to win three of four games and look to continue the trend when they host the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. The Tigers have allowed five runs in their three wins over the last four days and turn to veteran right-hander Anibal Sanchez in the second of a three-game series against the American League-worst Twins.

Detroit has won all seven meetings between the AL Central rivals this season, including a 1-0 triumph in the series opener on Monday. Justin Upton homered to provide the only run for the Tigers and has warmed up by going 11-for-36 over the last 10 games with a pair of blasts and five RBIs. Minnesota, which has won six of its last 10, owns an AL-low 33 wins this season and fired GM Terry Ryan on Monday to set a new direction. Twins infielder Eduardo Nunez is 2-for-16 since making his first AL All-Star team.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Tommy Milone (2-2, 5.23 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (5-10, 6.75)

Milone has won his last two starts, getting 26 runs of support while allowing three runs on 10 hits over 11 total innings. The 29-year-old USC product had yielded at least four runs in five of his first seven outings this season – one of them out of the bullpen. Victor Martinez (5-for-10) and Miguel Cabrera (6-for-15) have caused trouble for Milone, who is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA against Detroit in his career.

Sanchez has struggled in two starts since rejoining the rotation, permitting 12 runs on 13 hits over 8 1/3 innings during losses to Toronto and Cleveland. The 32-year-old Venezuelan has surrendered 17 homers in 22 outings – 14 of them starts. Danny Santana boasts success (6-for-14) while Brian Dozier (2-for-2) has been controlled by Sanchez, who is 4-3 with a 2.32 ERA lifetime versus the Twins.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Minnesota C Kurt Suzuki is 6-for-14 this season against the Tigers, but is just 1-for-10 since the All-Star break.

            2. Detroit CF Cameron Maybin has hit safely in 24 of 26 games at home in 2016 and is batting .420 with 13 walks at Comerica Park this season.

            3. The Tigers have outscored the Twins 43-21 during their seven-game winning streak in the series.

                Preview: Braves at Reds

                Current Conditions - Cincinnati

                Mostly clear 70 °F
                Wind: N 0.0
                5-Day Forecast
GAME: Atlanta Braves (32-61) at Cincinnati Reds (35-58)
                DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 19 - 7:10 PM EST

The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are struggling through miserable seasons, but the two worst teams in the National League send pitchers to the mound Tuesday who could play a key role in the near future. Cody Reed – ranked as the Reds’ third-best prospect according to MLB.com – makes his sixth major-league start for host Cincinnati, while the Braves counter with Tyrell Jenkins – Atlanta’s minor-league pitcher of the year in 2015 who gets his second career start.

The Reds limped into the All-Star break, losing 16 of 21 games, but improved to 3-1 since the break with Monday’s 8-2 victory. Cincinnati’s bullpen fired four scoreless innings in the series opener, lowering its ERA to 2.20 for July. Atlanta has dropped three of its past four games, being outscored 23-8 to fall to a major-league worst 32-61. Third baseman Adonis Garcia is hitting .421 in his past 10 contests, but the Braves have scored three runs or fewer 54 times in 93 games, going 6-48 in those contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Tyrell Jenkins (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Reds LH Cody Reed (0-4, 8.39)

The Braves moved Jenkins – ranked as the organization’s seventh-best prospect by MLB.com – to the bullpen a month before promoting him to the majors, and the 23-year-old has impressed in four relief appearances and a spot start July 6 at Philadelphia (one run, four hits, 4 2/3 innings). Jenkins does not rack up strikeouts, but relies on a good three-pitch mix (fastball, curveball and changeup) and solid location to generate groundball outs. Other than a four-inning relief appearance June 27 when he allowed four runs to Cleveland, Jenkins has limited opponents to three runs on 10 hits in 10 innings.

The 23-year-old Reed, who features a mid-90s fastball and a sweeping slider, has racked up 29 strikeouts in 24 2/3 big-league innings but has surrendered nine homers. He gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of a 7-3 loss at Miami on July 10, just the second time in five games he has allowed fewer than two homers in a game. Acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto trade last July, Reed went 6-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Louisville before being promoted in June.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. The Braves have hit 30 homers in their past 29 games, after hitting only 27 in their first 64 games.

                2. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases Monday, and is 6-for-16 with five steals in his past four games.

                3. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte went hitless in four at-bats, ending his six-game hitting streak.

                PREDICTION: Braves 6, Reds 5

The Cleveland Indians may be comfortably atop the American League Central, but the Kansas City Royals have dominated their division foes when they visit Kauffman Stadium. The defending World Series-champion Royals vie for their 16th win in 18 encounters with visiting AL Central rivals on Tuesday, when they play the middle contest of their three-game series against the Indians.

Jarrod Dyson belted a grand slam on Monday as Kansas City recorded its fourth straight victory overall versus first-place Cleveland with a 7-3 triumph. The Indians had won six of their previous seven meetings with the Royals before the latter brought out the brooms in Kansas City from June 13-15 and improved to 30-13 at home with Monday's victory. Francisco Lindor belted a solo homer in the series opener for his 18th hit and seventh RBI in 11 games versus Kansas City this season. The All-Star shortstop also has hit safely in nine of his last 10 contests heading into a matchup versus Tuesday starter Brian Flynn.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (10-3, 2.75 ERA) vs. Royals LH Brian Flynn (1-0, 2.39)

Salazar won six of his previous seven starts before escaping with a no-decision on July 9 after yielding six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings against the New York Yankees. The 26-year-old improved to 6-5 lifetime versus Kansas City after permitting one run and three hits in eight frames of a 6-1 win on June 3. Salazar's last loss came nearly two months ago after he allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings of a 5-2 setback against Boston on May 22.

Flynn is slated to make his first start of the season after 13 appearances out of the bullpen. The 26-year-old, who made five starts in limited duty over two seasons with Miami, yielded two runs and three hits in four innings of long relief against Cleveland on May 6. His last venture to the mound didn't last as long, as he struck out one in one scoreless frame.

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko has feasted on San Diego Padres pitching this year and will try to pick on his former team again Tuesday, when the teams continue their four-game series in St. Louis. Gyorko, who was traded from the Padres to the Cardinals in December for outfielder Jon Jay, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run to highlight a 10-2 win in the series opener on Monday.

That gave the 27-year-old three consecutive three-hit performances versus San Diego, each of which has come with a home run. Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk also went deep in Monday's win as St. Louis improved to 2-2 on its 10-game homestand, a somewhat notable achievement for a team that entered the series with the third-worst winning percentage (.417) at home in the National League. Matt Kemp homered for the Padres, while Wil Myers went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss. Myers is hitless in 11 straight at-bats since slugging his 20th home run Friday against San Francisco.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Colin Rea (5-3, 4.95 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (8-6, 2.85)

Rea has been swapping quality starts with non-quality efforts since the beginning of June and was on the rocky end of things his last time out at Arizona. The 26-year-old gave up four runs and eight hits with three walks in 4 2/3 innings, which caused his road ERA to rise to 5.52. Rea has faced the Cardinals two times in his career and has been reached for eight runs in nine innings.

Since giving up 14 runs in 15 innings over a the course of three May starts, Martinez has posted a 1.02 ERA in a span of eight mostly dominant outings. He struck out a season-high 11 and allowed one run in five innings of a win at Milwaukee prior to the break. The former All-Star has posted a 5.51 ERA in five career meetings (two starts) with the Padres and will be wary of catcher Derek Norris, who is 3-for-5 with a triple against Martinez.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Kemp needs one home run to reach 20 for the seventh time in his last eight seasons.

                        2. Grichuk has collected seven RBIs in his last six games.

                        3. The Padres are 10-26 all-time at the current Busch Stadium.

The Colorado Rockies look to even their record at home and win for the fourth time in five games since the All-Star break when they host the struggling Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Rockies improved to 21-22 with a 7-4 victory over the Rays on Monday in the opener of their three-game set as Trevor Story continued his standout rookie season with his 22nd homer.

Colorado posted 12 hits Monday and has scored 22 runs in three wins since the break while leadoff batter Charlie Blackmon is riding a 10-game hitting streak (14-for-45). Tyler Chatwood will try to rebound from a rough outing for the Rockies as he opposes promising rookie Blake Snell. The Rays have dropped 11 straight road games and 25 of 29 overall while sitting at the bottom of the American League in runs scored. Colorado must be careful against Evan Longoria, who notched his team-high 50th RBI on Monday and is 11-for-28 over his last seven contests.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (1-4, 3.69 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (8-5, 3.29)

Snell has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his first six major-league starts, including last time out against the Los Angeles Angels on July 7. The 23-year-old Seattle native took the loss in that game despite giving up two runs in six innings with a season-best seven strikeouts. Snell, who faces his first National League team, has yielded one home run but issued 17 walks in 31 2/3 innings.

Chatwood suffered only his second loss since early May last time out, when he permitted four runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings against Philadelphia. The 26-year-old has not allowed a home run in eight starts but has issued at least three walks in six consecutive outings. Chatwood is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA over two career outings – both in 2011 while with the Angels -- against Tampa Bay.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Rays 2B and leadoff batter Logan Forsythe is just 6-for-45 over his last 11 games.

                            2. Colorado 1B Mark Reynolds recorded three hits Monday after going hitless in 15 at-bats over his previous five games.

                            3. Tampa Bay INF Steve Pearce (hamstring) will be activated for Tuesday’s contest and UTIL Nick Franklin was optioned to Triple-A Durham.

                            PREDICTION: Rays 5, Rockies 3

After avoiding a sweep at one team currently in last place, the Toronto Blue Jays seek success at the home of another cellar dweller when they begin a two-game interleague set against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The Blue Jays won eight of nine before the All-Star break but suffered back-to-back one-run losses at Oakland to begin the second half.

Behind reigning MVP Josh Donaldson, who hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, Toronto rallied to take Sunday's series finale 5-3 and seemingly right the ship. "We desperately needed that as a team," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters. "We had the little lead, they came back and tied it. That's a big win for us." Toronto has a good chance to sustain the momentum Tuesday night with All-Star Aaron Sanchez - who has won eight straight decisions - on the mound. The Diamondbacks took two of three at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin the second half but they are still a woeful 17-33 at Chase Field.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (9-1, 2.97 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (2-0, 5.28)

Sanchez has held opponents to two runs or fewer in seven of his last eight outings, although he lasted just five innings in a no-decision against Detroit prior to the break. The 24-year-old is 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 10 road starts and has surrendered three home runs in 69 2/3 innings away from home. Sanchez has never faced the Diamondbacks but has surrendered three runs in 19 2/3 innings in his career in interleague play.

Godley is being recalled from Triple-A Reno to take the spot of the struggling Shelby Miller, who was sent to the minors last week. The University of Tennessee product made his second start for Arizona on July 5, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings of a win over San Diego, before returning to the Aces for a pair of appearances. Godley, 26, allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings of relief at Toronto last month.

                                2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt is batting .350 over his last 34 games.

                                3. Blue Jays LF Michael Saunders is 1-for-17 with six strikeouts in a five-game stretch.
