    Re: MLB Betting Info. 7/17

    Preview: Rockies at Braves

GAME: Colorado Rockies (42-48) at Atlanta Braves (31-60)
    DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 1:35 PM EST
    WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies have their work cut out for them in order to get in the wild-card race, but its pursuit toward that goal figures to be aided by the ineptitude of their upcoming opponents. The Rockies attempt to match their longest winning streak in Atlanta in over 18 years Sunday, when they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Braves.

Colorado, which sits six games behind the New York Mets and Miami for the last wild-card spot in the National League, is 72-115 against its former division rival but has held the upper hand recently, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings after scoring all of its runs after the seventh inning in Saturday's 4-3 victory. The triumph gave the Rockies their fourth straight win over the team with the worst record in the majors in the Braves (31-60), who will visit Colorado for four games next weekend. Atlanta was its own worst enemy over the last two innings of Saturday's defeat, as its bullpen unleashed three wild pitches and the defense committed two errors to ruin a strong start from Mike Foltynewicz. The Braves have dropped seven of their last nine games in Atlanta and own the majors' worst home mark at 15-33.
TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (5-4, 4.67 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (3-8, 2.96)
Gray avoided giving up a home run for the first time in nine starts against Philadelphia on July 8 but settled for a no-decision despite allowing two runs and striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings. Despite struggling to keep the ball in the yard during that time, the 24-year-old rookie has lowered his ERA from 6.75 by logging a quality start seven times over that stretch. Gray is holding opposing hitters to a .225 average away from home, but he only has a 2-4 record and 4.63 ERA to show for his troubles.
Teheran will return for the first time since ending the first half with a thigh infection that led to two of his worst three outings of the season, as he was tagged for a total of 10 runs and 20 hits over 12 2/3 innings. The Braves' lone All-Star representative took the loss in his last trip to the mound in Chicago against the White Sox on July 9, giving up five runs over six frames. Teheran has enjoyed much more success in five starts versus the Rockies, however, going 4-1 with a 3.41 ERA.

    WALK-OFFS
    1. Colorado's rotation has posted a 3.73 ERA over its last 21 road games and allowed three runs or fewer in 18 of those outings.
    2. Atlanta C A.J. Pierzynski's two-run homer in Saturday's loss gave the team 29 home runs over its last 27 contests - two more than the Braves recorded over their first 64 games.
    3. Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez struck out in his first at-bat Saturday, ending a streak of 21 plate appearances in which he failed to do so.

    PREDICTION: Rockies 3, Braves 2

        Preview: Pirates at Nationals

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (46-45) at Washington Nationals (56-36)
        DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals are winners of five straight and own the second-most wins in the major leagues. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who visit the Nationals in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday, have dropped three in a row following a stretch of nine wins in 10 games and are looking for some stability in the starting rotation.

The Pirates activated ace Gerrit Cole off the disabled list on Saturday but watched him get knocked around for five runs and seven hits in four innings during a 6-0 loss. Pittsburgh recently demoted left-hander Jon Niese to the bullpen and is trying to infuse some youth into the rotation with rookie right-hander Chad Kuhl getting the nod on Sunday. The Nationals improved to 29-15 at home with Saturday’s win and the pitching staff has allowed a total of five runs in the last five games. Tanner Roark worked into the ninth inning on Saturday after Stephen Strasburg’s eight-inning gem on Friday, leaving the bullpen well stocked heading into the series finale.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (1-0, 6.08 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (10-6, 3.03)

Kuhl turned in solid efforts in each of his first two major league starts before being knocked around by the Chicago Cubs on July 9. The Delaware native was ripped for four runs on seven hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings but avoided a loss when Pittsburgh came back to earn a 12-6 victory. Kuhl’s lone road start came at Oakland on July 2, when he scattered two runs and seven hits across six innings without factoring in the decision.

Scherzer wowed opposing hitters with velocity approaching 100 mph in his single inning of work in Tuesday’s All-Star Game and is hoping to pick up right where he left off prior to the break. The Missouri product surrendered a total of one earned run and nine hits while striking out 26 in 20 1/3 innings over his last three starts. Scherzer pitched a no-hitter at home against the Pirates on June 20 last season, coming within one out of a perfect game before hitting Jose Tabata with a pitch.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. The Pirates optioned 1B Josh Bell, who reached base in each of his first four major league at-bats, to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

        2. Washington All-Star 2B Daniel Murphy (hamstring) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

        3. Pittsburgh RF Gregory Polanco (hamstring) has been out since July 8 but could return to the lineup when the team hosts Milwaukee on Tuesday.

        PREDICTION: Nationals 7, Pirates 2

            Preview: Indians at Twins

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cleveland Indians (53-37) at Minnesota Twins (33-57)
            DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 2:10 PM EST
            WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The American League Central cellar-dwelling Minnesota Twins haven't had much reason to smile this season, but they sure are having fun at the expense of the first-place Cleveland Indians. The Twins will look to take two of three from the Indians for the third time in 2016 when the division rivals conclude their series at Target Field on Sunday afternoon.

Minnesota overcame a late two-run deficit and a two-hour, two-minute rain delay to post a 5-4 victory in 11 innings on Saturday night, marking its fifth win in eight outings versus Cleveland while going 2-19 against the rest of the division. Brian Dozier drove in a pair of runs and has two homers and five RBIs in his last three games, but is 3-for-19 versus Sunday starter Josh Tomlin. Indians' designated hitter Mike Napoli went deep in Friday's 5-2 victory and reached base three times the following night to improve to 8-for-16 with two blasts, five RBIs and seven runs scored in his last five contests. Carlos Santana had three hits to increase his total to 19 during his 13-game hitting streak, but is 2-for-15 - albeit with two homers - versus Sunday starter Kyle Gibson.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Josh Tomlin (9-2, 3.51 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (2-5, 5.02)

Tomlin saw his string of six consecutive starts of three earned runs or fewer in six innings come to an abrupt halt on July 6, as he yielded eight runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 frames of a 12-2 setback to Detroit. The 31-year-old saw his ERA jump .30 points following the shellacking against the Tigers and has struggled versus the Twins in his career. Tomlin permitted five runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 6-5 victory over Minnesota on April 27 before surrendering three homers and four runs total in a no-decision on May 13.

Gibson permitted four runs for the second straight start and walked away with a no-decision after pitching just five innings at Texas on July 8. The 28-year-old owns a 2-0 mark in his last three starts after falling on the wrong end of a decision in five of his previous seven. Gibson improved to 2-2 in his career versus Cleveland after scattering four hits and striking out nine over six scoreless innings in his last encounter.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Minnesota 3B Miguel Sano committed two errors on Saturday to increase his total to seven in his last eight games.

            2. Cleveland C Yan Gomes, who dropped the ball on Saturday's game-winning fielder's choice, is hitless in his last 27 at-bats and is mired in a 1-for-35 stretch in July.

            3. The Twins will induct former radio broadcaster John Gordon into the team's Hall of Fame on Sunday.

            PREDICTION: Indians 5, Twins 2

                Preview: Marlins at Cardinals

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Miami Marlins (48-42) at St. Louis Cardinals (47-43)
                DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty are heating up in July and the St. Louis Cardinals would love to follow their lead. Pham homered twice in the series opener and Piscotty ripped a two-run double the following night for the Cardinals, who will look to win the rubber match of the three-game set with the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon.

Pham collected two hits in Saturday's 5-0 triumph to improve to 8-for-17 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored during his five-game hitting streak. Piscotty's double extended his hitting streak to seven games and his production in the month to 16-for-44 with three blasts, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored. While St. Louis has gone deep on five occasions in the series and 122 times this season, Miami mustered just three hits against Adam Wainwright on Saturday to see its four-game winning streak halted. Adeiny Hechavarria collected two of the hits to improve to 3-for-7 in the series after a 1-for-17 stretch in his previous five games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (6-5, 3.62 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.36)

Conley won his second straight start and third in four outings on July 9 after allowing two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 4-2 victory over Cincinnati. The 26-year-old has struck out 22 batters against six walks in his last four outings after issuing five free passes versus Colorado on June 17. Conley will be making his 30th career start and first against St. Louis on Sunday.

Wacha was thwarted in his bid to win his fourth straight start on July 8, as he allowed three solo homers in 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Milwaukee. The 25-year-old had kept the ball in the park in each of his previous two outings and five of seven overall. Like the rest of the team, Wacha has struggled at home this season with a 2-4 mark and 4.70 ERA while allowing the opposition to bat .289 against him.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Miami 2B Derek Dietrich is 0-for-9 in his last three contests after going 5-for-11 in his previous three.

                2. St. Louis SS Aledmys Diaz saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end Saturday, but has six runs scored in his last eight contests.

                3. Marlins injured 1B Justin Bour (right ankle sprain) has yet to make a rehab start and is likely to remain sidelined despite being eligible to return from the disabled list on Monday.

                PREDICTION: Cardinals 4, Marlins 3

GAME: Texas Rangers (54-38) at Chicago Cubs (55-35)
                    DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 2:20 PM EST

Things didn’t go so well for the Chicago Cubs the last time Cole Hamels took the mound at Wrigley Field. Hamels makes his first start at the famous ballpark since no-hitting the Cubs last July, and his Texas Rangers might need another dominant performance to avoid a three-game sweep.

The Cubs have claimed the first two games of the interleague clash between first-place teams, limiting Texas to one run in the process. Chicago has won three straight spanning the All-Star break following a rough stretch leading up to the break, while Texas has lost 11 of its last 14. Right-hander John Lackey looks to keep the Rangers’ slumping offense on its heels and outduel Hamels, who is 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA on the road this season. Lackey might not get much support from a Cubs’ roster that is a combined 10-for-86 with 26 strikeouts against Hamels.
TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, TBS, FSN Southwest (Texas), ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (9-2, 3.21 ERA) vs. Cubs RH John Lackey (7-5, 3.70)
Hamels was 6-for-6 in quality starts in June, going 4-0 with a 1.51 ERA, but he has allowed five runs and failed to get out of the fifth inning in each of his last two outings. The 32-year-old struggled to command the strike zone at times and has walked nine over his past two starts, including six last time out against Minnesota. Hamels is 4-1 with a 2.00 ERA in eight career starts against the Cubs.
Lackey is winless in six starts since throwing seven scoreless frames to win at Philadelphia on June 8, and he posted an unsightly 6.23 ERA over that stretch. The 37-year-old gave up 11 runs over 12 innings in his last two starts before the All-Star break and has surrendered seven homers over his last five outings. Lackey is 14-15 with a 5.71 ERA in 40 career starts against the Rangers, but has faced them only four times since 2011.

                    WALK-OFFS
                    1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 18-for-44 during an 11-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 22 of his last 23 contests.
                    2. Rangers SS Elvis Andrus has reached safely in 12 of his last 13 games, hitting .333 during that stretch, but he is 7-for-34 with five strikeouts versus Lackey.
                    3. The Cubs are 4-0 in interleague games this season and have won six straight against American League opponents dating back to last year.

While they hope to avoid a three-game sweep, the Chicago White Sox have a more pressing need when they visit the Los Angeles Angels for the finale of their set Sunday — score a run. Chicago, which last crossed the plate July 9 in a 5-4 victory over Atlanta, was blanked by the Braves in its final game before the All-Star break and by the Angels in each of the first two contests of their series.

The White Sox wasted a two-hitter by James Shields on Saturday as they were blanked for the fifth time in 11 games this month. The Angels scored the lone run Saturday on a groundout as they managed only a double by Ji-Man Choi and a triple by Yunel Escobar. Escobar has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 contests and has scored a run in five of his last seven. Mike Trout drove in Escobar for his fifth RBI in seven games and 59th on the season — one behind Albert Pujols for the team lead.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Jacob Turner (NR) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (7-7, 5.27)

Turner will make his first major-league appearance since 2014 with the Chicago Cubs as he makes the start in place of the injured Carlos Rodon. The 25-year-old native of Missouri has posted an 11-25 record with one complete game and a 4.97 ERA in 61 career games (51 starts) with Detroit, Miami and the Cubs. Turner has made 18 starts for Triple-A Charlotte this season, going 4-7 with one shutout and a 4.71 ERA.

Weaver's trend of two rough outings followed by a strong one continued July 6 when he allowed one run and four hits over six innings in a win at Tampa Bay after surrendering a total of 10 runs over 10 frames in his previous two starts. The 33-year-old Californian yielded 12 runs over two turns in early June before tossing a three-hit shutout at Oakland in his next outing. Weaver has dominated Chicago over his career, going 11-2 with a 1.94 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 14 starts.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. White Sox 1B Jose Abreu has not gone more than one game without a hit since a two-game drought from June 15-17 and has notched five multi-hit performances in his last 10 contests.

                        2. Choi has recorded a hit in each of his last three contests after registering just one over his first 15 major-league games.

                        3. Chicago CF Adam Eaton has recorded two hits in each of his last two games and six of his last 10.

                            Preview: Blue Jays at Athletics

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (51-42) at Oakland Athletics (40-51)
                            DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 17 - 4:05 PM EST
                            WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
                            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Toronto Blue Jays had designs on using their strong first-half finish as a springboard to the top of the American League East. However, they have limped out of the All-Star break with a pair of losses at Oakland and will try to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon against the Athletics.

Both games have been decided by one run, with Oakland scoring four early runs and tacking on a solo home run from Khris Davis - his second of the game - to claim Saturday's decision 5-4. Davis also homered in Friday's series opener, is 5-for-8 with five RBIs in the series and has gone deep in each of his last three games against Toronto. The pitching matchup for the finale is an intriguing one, as Athletics veteran Rich Hill will get the ball opposite J.A. Happ in a battle between veteran left-handers who have reclaimed their careers. Hill, who already missed time with a groin issue earlier in the year and has recently battled a blister, remains heavily involved in trade rumors as the deadline approaches.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet (Toronto), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (12-3, 3.36 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Rich Hill (9-3, 2.25)

Happ stormed into the All-Star break with six straight wins while allowing a total of 12 earned runs. He held Detroit scoreless through 5 2/3 frames and struck out nine in a victory on July 8, giving him 20 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over his last two appearances. The 33-year-old defeated Oakland with seven quality innings April 23 at home and is 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in eight career encounters (six starts).

Hill is 6-0 with a no-decision over his last seven starts, which was interrupted by a stretch on the disabled list. While he has been exceptional overall, his home numbers (2-3, 3.45 ERA) are a bit more pedestrian, but he has lasted at least six frames in his last four in Oakland while allowing two or fewer runs in each of those outings. The Boston native is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 10 career appearances - including three starts - versus the Blue Jays.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Blue Jays DH Edwin Encarnacion slugged his 24th homer Saturday but is hitting just .236 in 29 career games in Oakland.

                            2. A's C Stephen Vogt is 9-for-15 with two homers, six RBIs and no strikeouts during a four-game hitting streak.

                            3. Oakland has committed six errors in its last three games.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 3, Athletics 2

Instead of complaining about his recent All-Star Game snub, Jake Lamb already is making a strong case for next year’s squad. Lamb is batting .388 with eight home runs over his last 24 games to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks, who face the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game series.

The 25-year-old Lamb recorded three extra-base hits on Saturday, including a game-tying RBI double in the ninth inning off Kenley Jansen as Arizona snapped a five-game losing streak with a 12-inning, 2-1 victory. Lamb has been one of the few bright spots for cellar-dwelling Arizona, which has notched three wins in its last 16 games. Jansen recorded his first blown save since June 11 for the Dodgers, who remain 5 1/2 games behind NL West-leading San Francisco despite going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Howie Kendrick collected four hits in the loss and is 17-for-36 during his nine-game hitting streak, while Adrian Gonzalez is batting .300 over his last 15 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (8-6, 2.95 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (4-8, 4.81)

Maeda entered the All-Star break on a high note after striking out a career-high 13 batters over seven innings of one-run ball in last Sunday’s 3-1 win over San Diego. "You could see that look in Kenta's eye," manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "He was determined to dominate, and that's exactly what he did." Lamb and Jean Segura are a combined 7-for-10 against Maeda, who is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two previous starts against Arizona this season.

Ray’s winless streak reached four games last Saturday after he allowed three runs over five frames in a loss to San Francisco, but the 24-year-old remains optimistic. “I was putting guys away with my curveball and my slider and elevating my fastball when I needed to,” Ray told reporters. “I felt good.” Gonzalez is hitless in 11 at-bats against Ray, who is 2-2 with a 2.40 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers but owns a 5.92 ERA in nine starts at home this season.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. The Dodgers placed Trayce Thompson on the 15-day disabled list with lower back irritation and recalled fellow OF Zach Walters from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

                                2. Arizona UTIL Chris Herrmann missed Saturday’s game due to a right hamstring injury and could require a stint on the disabled list.

                                3. Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (back) threw 60 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday and might rejoin the rotation next week.

                                PREDICTION: Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 4
