GAME: Texas Rangers (54-36) at Chicago Cubs (53-35)
        DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 2:20 PM EST
        WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The All-Star break came at just the right time for the Chicago Cubs and the visiting Texas Rangers, who hope to regain the form that staked them to big division leads when they open a three-game showdown Friday at Wrigley Field. The National League Central-leading Cubs and the American League West-leading Rangers both limped into the break but still have substantial cushions heading into the second half.

The Cubs are seven games clear of St. Louis and 7 1/2 ahead of Pittsburgh, but they dropped nine of the last 11 overall before the break along with six of their last seven at home. The Friendly Confines have been good to right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who looks to improve upon a 5-1 record and 1.67 ERA at home when he starts the opener. The Rangers were also struggling leading into the break, dropping nine of their last 12, but they remain 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place Houston. Left-hander Martin Perez begins the second half on the mound looking to improve upon a spotty road record – 1-4 with a 5.23 ERA in nine starts away from home.
TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Southwest (Texas), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Martin Perez (7-5, 3.85 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 2.55)
Perez won six straight decisions over a dominant six-week stretch before closing the first half with a disastrous outing at Boston. The 25-year-old gave up 11 runs – seven earned – over four innings to suffer his first loss since May 18. Perez has surrendered five homers over his last four starts after giving up three over his previous nine outings.
Hendricks is within one win of matching his career high, and he has been the Cubs’ most consistent starter over the past month. In four starts and one relief appearance since June 19, Hendricks is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA and has racked up 25 strikeouts and just eight walks over 25 innings. The 26-year-old has not lost since June 13 at Washington.

        WALK-OFFS
        1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo closed the first half with a nine-game hitting streak and hit .444 during that stretch.
        2. Texas OF Ian Desmond (2-for-5, HR) is the only Rangers player who has faced Hendricks.
        3. Rangers RHP Yu Darvish, who has been on the disabled list since June 9 with shoulder discomfort, is expected to start Saturday’s contest.

        PREDICTION: Cubs 5, Rangers 4

GAME: Boston Red Sox (49-38) at New York Yankees (44-44)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are still trying to figure out where they sit in the playoff race in the American League East, and whether they are good enough to remain in it for the duration. The Red Sox will try to creep closer to first place in the AL East and make the decision to sell a little easier for the Yankees when they visit their rivals in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

Boston closed the first half strong with wins in six of its last seven games and used All-Star week to show off young stars like Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Xander Bogaerts while 40-year-old departing slugger David Ortiz took his final turn on the Midsummer Classic stage. The Red Sox, who sit two games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the East, own the best offense in the majors but have several questions on the pitching staff that should keep the team active in trade rumors up until the July 31 deadline. New York has already been the focus of trade rumors, with other teams drooling over the possibility that relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman may be available if the Yankees drift any further down the standings. New York took three of four from the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians before the break to pull to .500 at 44-44.

            TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (1-3, 8.59 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Michael Pineda (3-8, 5.38)

A strong effort from Rodriguez would immediately alleviate some of the concerns about the Boston staff. The 23-year-old was expected to be a top-of-the-rotation arm behind David Price before a knee injury derailed his spring training, but he struggled when he came off the disabled list and eventually was bounced back to the minors after getting ripped for nine runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings at Tampa Bay on June 27. Rodriguez made the necessary adjustments in two starts at Triple-A, allowing a total of two runs and five hits in 10 innings.

Pineda had a string of six straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer come to an end when he was ripped for five runs in a loss at the Chicago White Sox in his final start before the break on July 6. The Dominican Republic native leads the Yankees with 113 strikeouts in just 95 1/3 innings but is yielding a .274 batting average against. Pineda was strong in a pair of starts against Boston earlier this season, allowing a total of four runs in 11 innings, but could not get enough run support to earn a win.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Red Sox closer and All-Star RHP Craig Kimbrel will miss the next 3-6 weeks due to knee surgery.

            2. New York 1B Mark Teixeira finished the first half with a .193 batting average and a .317 slugging percentage.

            3. Ortiz, Bogaerts, Betts and Bradley Jr. combined to go 4-for-7 in Tuesday’s 4-2 AL win at the All-Star Game.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 6, Yankees 5

                SUNNY 87 °F
                Wind: NW 7
                5-Day Forecast
GAME: New York Mets (47-41) at Philadelphia Phillies (42-48)
                DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

With the festivities of the All-Star Game now in the rear-view mirror, the New York Mets are hoping history repeats itself as a strong second-half surge last season carried the club to the World Series. The Mets look to take the first step on that journey Friday when they open a nine-game road trip with the first of three versus the Philadelphia Phillies.

Injuries have proven to be an all-too-frequent obstacle for New York, which has fielded its Opening Day lineup on just nine occasions - with the last being April 22. "Every day, you come in, you write a lineup, and it changes," manager Terry Collins said. "Couple times, things get going good, and then you lose a big piece, be it a pitcher or an offensive piece. It's been hard, It's been tough on everybody." While the Mets are dealing with the injury bug, the topsy-turvy Phillies have dealt with growing pains during their roller-coaster first half of the season. All-Star Odubel Herrera limped into the break mired in a 1-for-15 slump for Philadelphia, which bounced back from a dismal stretch in June to win 10 of its last 13.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), NBC-10 (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (5-4, 2.61 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jeremy Hellickson (6-6, 3.92)

DeGrom recorded his second straight win after allowing two runs - both solo homers - in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Miami on July 6. The 28-year-old has permitted three runs on 16 hits in his last three outings (20 frames) to wash out the sour taste in his mouth following a three-start losing skid. DeGrom improved to 3-0 in his career versus Philadelphia on April 8 after yielding one run on five hits in six innings of a 7-2 romp.

Hellickson has improved his trade value after allowing three earned runs on 14 hits in 18 innings to post a 2-0 mark over his last three outings. The 29-year-old owns a 2-1 career mark versus New York after yielding just two runs on three hits in a 5-2 win on April 10, but his performance 10 days later left plenty for which to be desired. Hellickson permitted four runs on a season-high 10 hits - including two homers - in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. New York OF Yoenis Cespedes could be ready to return from a right quad strain and resume his dismantling of Philadelphia, against which he has three homers and six RBIs in six games this season.

                2. Phillies C Cameron Rupp is batting .323 with five homers at Citizens Bank Park in 2016.

                3. Mets OF Curtis Granderson recorded three multi-hit performances in his last five games, but is just 4-for-22 in his career versus Hellickson.

                PREDICTION: Mets 4, Phillies 2

                    Preview: Pirates at Nationals

                    Wind: NNW 10
                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (46-43) at Washington Nationals (54-36)
                    DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia

The Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates were both popular picks to reach the postseason in the National League, but only one enters the second half looking like a solid bet to achieve that goal. The Pirates will attempt to continue the course correction that began before the break when they start the second half by visiting the Nationals on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

The Pirates were languishing five games under .500 after a loss to San Francisco on June 23 but closed the first half on a tear with wins in 12 of the last 16 games. Pittsburgh’s schedule out of the All-Star break features 18 of the first 23 games against teams with losing records, and the Pirates sit only 1 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the NL. Washington is in a better spot with a six-game lead in the NL East and improved its position with three straight wins over the second-place New York Mets to close out the first half. The Nationals won 11 of their final 15 before the break and All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy clubbed three homers while recording 10 RBIs in four games against the Mets last weekend.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (5-8, 5.15 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (12-0, 2.62)

Liriano recovered from a terrible stretch with two solid starts to begin July, allowing a total of four earned runs in 10 innings against Oakland and the Chicago Cubs. The Dominican Republic native struggles with his control at times and has issued 58 walks in 92 2/3 innings this season. Liriano started twice against Washington last season and struck out 17 in 11 2/3 innings but was reached for six runs on 10 hits and four walks.

Strasburg would have been among the candidates to start the All-Star Game for the NL had he not elected to skip the contest and rest after dealing with some nagging injuries in the first half. The former top pick looked plenty healthy in his last start before the break, when he held the Mets to one run and two hits while striking out nine in seven innings to earn the win. Strasburg is seeing Pittsburgh for the first time since 2014 and is 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Nationals All-Star C Wilson Ramos is 4-for-22 without an extra-base hit in his last six games.

                    2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen went 6-for-12 with two home runs and six RBIs in the final three games before the break.

                    3. Washington closer and RHP Jonathan Papelbon surrendered one hit and no walks while striking out eight over four total innings in his last four appearances.

                    PREDICTION: Nationals 3, Pirates 1

The visiting Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds are two of the few teams that have the “seller” light lit up already with more than two weeks until the trade deadline and figure to have plenty of scouts in the stands when they meet for the opener of a three-game series on Friday. Both teams have an All-Star reportedly on the block and will be looking for big returns to spark their respective rebuilding programs.

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy and Reds outfielder Jay Bruce both had to answer some questions about the trade rumors during All-Star week. "I said this in spring training - and I’m gonna sound like a parrot - but the Reds would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn’t try to better the organization by trading me and getting prospects," Bruce told reporters. "I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but they have to be open for business. That’s the mode they’re in right now. I get it.” Lucroy understands his team’s place in the competition cycle as well and could find himself on a contender in need of catching help any day now. Milwaukee and Cincinnati each dropped seven of their final 10 games going into the All-Star break and lag far behind Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh in the National League Central.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Matt Garza (1-2, 5.54 ERA) vs. Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (3-0, 2.23)

The break came at a perfect time for Garza, who was knocked around for a total of 14 runs – 11 earned – over 10 innings in his two July outings. The California native yielded three home runs in 4 1/3 innings at Washington on July 6 and has allowed 37 hits in 26 total innings since making his season debut on June 14. Garza made three starts against Cincinnati in 2015 and went 1-0 despite surrendering 13 earned runs and 23 hits in 15 innings.

DeSclafani turned in his fifth quality start in six turns when he held the Chicago Cubs to three runs on eight hits in six innings on July 6. The 26-year-old struck out six without issuing a walk in that outing and has 29 strikeouts against nine walks in 36 1/3 innings in the majors this season. DeSclafani faced Milwaukee twice last season and went 1-1 with a total of four earned runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings to go along with eight strikeouts and one walk.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Brewers LF Ryan Braun is 2-for-20 with seven strikeouts in the last five games.

                        2. Bruce went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts in the All-Star game while Lucroy singled in his lone at-bat.

                        3. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto is 1-for-13 with six strikeouts in the last four contests.

The Baltimore Orioles hope to build on their lead in the American League East as they visit the struggling Tampa Bay Rays on Friday for the opener of a three-game series. The Orioles won four of their last five contests before the All-Star break to take a two-game lead over both Boston and Toronto while the Rays have dropped 22 of 25.

Baltimore trails the Red Sox and Blue Jays in runs scored this season but leads all of baseball with 137 homers – 28 from major-league leader Mark Trumbo. Jonathan Schoop enters Friday with a nine-game hitting streak and Adam Jones has hit safely in eight in a row for the Orioles while Manny Machado is 13-for-38 with three homers against the Rays this year. Tampa Bay limped into the break with six straight losses and is 2-7 against Baltimore in 2016 after getting swept in a four-game series from June 24-26. Evan Longoria has been the most consistent offensive force for the Rays, recording 19 homers and 47 RBIs this year while going 10-for-21 over his last five games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 5.82 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (4-12, 4.66)

Gallardo is unbeaten in five starts (2-0) since coming off the disabled list and has allowed three or fewer runs in four of those outings. However, the 30-year-old Mexican struggled with control in those starts, walking 16 in a total of 25 1/3 innings. Gallardo permitted three runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 frames of a no-decision against Tampa Bay on June 24 and is 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA in four career games versus the Rays.

Archer, who is making his 20th start of the season, has dropped five straight decisions after giving up five runs and seven hits over six innings against Boston last time out. The North Carolina native has recorded 130 strikeouts in 110 innings but has completed more than six frames just once in his last five outings. Manny Machado is 9-for-25 with a homer versus Archer, who is 3-5 lifetime - 1-1 this year - with a 4.48 ERA against Baltimore.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Tampa Bay OF-DH Corey Dickerson is 8-for-17 during a five-game hitting streak and 4-for-6 with a homer in his career against Gallardo.

                            2. Baltimore LHP Zach Britton owns 100 career saves – not including his effort in the All-Star Game on Tuesday -- and is tied with Stu Miller for fourth place on the franchise list.

                            3. The Rays will recall C Luke Maile for Friday’s contest and have signed RHP Kevin Jepsen, who was released by Minnesota.

                            PREDICTION: Rays 6, Orioles 4

GAME: Kansas City Royals (45-43) at Detroit Tigers (46-43)
                                DATE/TIME: Friday, July 15 - 7:10 PM EST

A pair of Kansas City Royals stars helped ensure the American League representative will have home-field advantage in the World Series, but they have plenty of work to do to earn a chance to defend their crown. Kansas City hopes to begin its climb toward a return to the postseason with a three-game road series against the Detroit Tigers starting Friday.

Royals standouts Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer – who was named the All-Star Game MVP – hit home runs to power the AL in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic, but Kansas City has an uphill battle to get back to the playoffs. The Royals are tied for third in the AL Central, a half-game behind second-place Detroit and seven back of red-hot Cleveland, in large part because of a 16-30 road record. Kansas City stumbled into the break, losing six of its last eight and scoring just 25 runs over that stretch, and right-hander Justin Verlander – who is 21-8 with a 3.26 ERA in 39 career starts against the Royals – hopes to continue those offensive woes. Right-hander Ian Kennedy turned in a quality start against the Tigers on April 20 but suffered a 3-2 defeat and is searching for his first win against Detroit.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (6-7, 3.97 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (8-6, 4.07)
Kennedy has surrendered at least one home run in seven straight starts – and 13 in all over that stretch – but he put up solid numbers in his last three outings. The 31-year-old posted a 3.00 ERA over the past three starts, compiling 29 strikeouts against five walks in 18 innings. Kennedy is 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA in four starts against the Tigers.
Verlander has put together a strong two-month stretch, going 6-3 with a 3.05 ERA over his last 12 starts – and that includes a clunker June 26 against Cleveland in which he allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old has had difficulty keeping the ball in the park at home, allowing 10 homers in 58 2/3 innings over nine starts. Verlander beat the Royals on June 16 in Kansas City, allowing four runs over seven innings.

                                WALK-OFFS
                                1. Perez is 22-for-46 with seven doubles and two homers against Verlander.
                                2. Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler, who is 6-for-9 with four doubles versus Kennedy, is a career .314 hitter against the Royals.
                                3. Royals SS Alcides Escobar, who had reached base in a career-best 25 consecutive games before failing to do so Sunday against Seattle, is a paltry 13-for-70 against Verlander.

                                PREDICTION: Tigers 6, Royals 4
