      Preview: Royals at Phillies

      Current Conditions - Philadelphia

      SUNNY 87 °F
      Wind: WSW 14
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: Kansas City Royals (43-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-46)
      DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost was committed to keeping designated hitter Kendrys Morales in the lineup when the team played a string of games in National League parks. The move has paid off in a big way, and the Royals will likely lean on Morales' hot bat when they play the rubber match of a three-game set in Philadelphia against the Phillies on Sunday.

Morales slugged two home runs and drove in four during Saturday's 6-2 win to even the series at a game apiece, and the veteran switch-hitter is 9-for-15 with four homers through the first four games (3-1) of the road trip through St. Louis and Philadelphia. Morales has also made Yost look good through some capable play on the field, calling his usual designated hitter "a real pleasant surprise" in right field. The winning formula will be put to the test against Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez, who made a triumphant return from the disabled list in his last time out with five scoreless innings and a win at Arizona. Center fielder Peter Bourjos has been the hot hand for Philadelphia, as he is batting .455 during his 11-game hitting streak.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yordano Ventura (6-5, 5.00 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (6-2, 3.38)

Ventura followed up a pair of gems with a rocky outing Tuesday against St. Louis, giving up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA in four day starts and has recorded 29 strikeouts against six walks in his past six appearances overall. Ventura, who has a 4.17 ERA in 10 interleague starts, has never faced the Phillies.

Velasquez struck out seven and did not issue a walk in his solid showing Monday against the Diamondbacks. Three of his five home outings (excluding his injury-shortened outing on June 8) have also resulted in a scoreless line and he has a 1.24 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. Morales has a homer and a single in four at-bats against the 24-year-old, who gave up four runs and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings as a member of the Houston Astros in his only career start against the Royals last year.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Royals SS Alcides Escobar is batting .379 during a 13-game hitting streak.

      2. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco has four two-hit efforts in his last five contests.

      3. Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is 0-for-15 with six strikeouts in his last four games.

      PREDICTION: Royals 5, Phillies 4

          Wind: SW 15
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (30-52) at Washington Nationals (49-33)

The Cincinnati Reds have been let down by their league-worst bullpen all season but are getting exemplary work out of the relief crew this weekend. The Reds will try to get enough innings out of starter John Lamb to give the bullpen a well-deserved rest and earn a split when they visit the Washington Nationals in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.

Three Cincinnati relievers combined to allow one run over seven frames in a 3-2 loss in 14 innings on Friday, and three different relievers outdueled the Washington bullpen in a 9-4 victory in 10 frames on Saturday. The win snapped a five-game slide and marked the third time in five contests that the Reds had to work overtime into extra innings. The Nationals had a six-game winning streak come to an end with the setback as left-hander Sammy Solis and righty - and former Red - Matt Belisle struggled to keep the game close. Solis was working a tie game in the ninth inning with closer Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal strain) unavailable, and the veteran closer is inching closer to a return after making his second rehab appearance at Double-A Harrisburg on Saturday.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), MASN (Washington), WUSA 9 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH John Lamb (1-4, 4.60 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-0, 2.90)

Lamb posted a quality start and snapped a string of three straight outings failing to get through six innings when he held the Chicago Cubs to two runs and six hits in six frames on Tuesday. The California native struck out seven in that outing and is boosting his strikeout rate with 19 in 16 2/3 innings over his last three turns. Lamb is getting his first look at Washington and is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA on the road.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker is calling Strasburg (ribs, back) a game-time decision for Sunday, with rookie sensation Lucas Giolito a possibility if Strasburg were to get scratched. Strasburg, who has been out since holding the Cubs to one run in seven innings on June 15, came through a bullpen session Thursday without any issues. The San Diego native had some trouble at Cincinnati on June 4, allowing three runs on four hits – two home runs – in 5 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Reds 1B Joey Votto (shoulder) was scratched on Saturday and is day-to-day.

          2. Washington SS Danny Espinosa has three home runs and nine RBIs in the series.

          3. Cincinnati C Tucker Barnhart is 7-for-13 with three RBIs in the series.

          PREDICTION: Nationals 7, Reds 4

            Preview: Rangers at Twins

            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Texas Rangers (52-30) at Minnesota Twins (26-54)
            DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 2:10 PM EST

Cole Hamels is in the midst of a dominating stretch and looks to keep the Texas Rangers from losing their first series since mid-May in Sunday's rubber match of a three-game set at the Minnesota Twins. Hamels not only has won four straight starts, but he hasn't lost away from home during the regular season in nearly 11 months.

What appeared to be a gimme on paper for Hamels against the worst team in the majors took on a different light after the Twins mauled the Rangers 17-5 on Saturday. Max Kepler set a franchise rookie record with seven RBIs after belting a pair of three-run homers, including the first of his career off a left-hander. Texas, which owns the best record in the American League, has dropped three of its last four contests to fall to 3-3 on its 10-game road trip. Kyle Gibson, coming off his first victory of the year, will take the mound for Minnesota in the series finale.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (9-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (1-5, 5.12)

Hamels capped an unbeaten month of June with a dominant effort against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, tossing seven scoreless innings of six-hit ball. The 32-year-old has put up stellar numbers during the four-game winning streak, permitting two runs and 18 hits over 27 2/3 innings. He has been spectacular away from home this season, posting a 6-0 mark and 1.44 ERA to remain unbeaten on the road since Aug. 7, 2015.

Gibson finally broke into the win column in his eighth start, striking out a season-high seven batters and blanking the Chicago White Sox on five hits over seven innings. The 28-year-old had done little to inspire any confidence in three starts since spending seven weeks on the disabled list, giving up 13 runs and 21 hits over 18 innings. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Chicago White Sox (41-40) at Houston Astros (43-38)

The Houston Astros will be seeking their sixth consecutive series victory when they host the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game set. Chicago rallied for a 7-6 victory Saturday to halt the Astros' four-game winning streak and hand them only their second loss in 13 contests.

White Sox center fielder J.B. Shuck homered and tripled in Saturday's win to improve to 10-for-25 with three blasts over the past seven games. Shuck's homer was the 15th in a row of the solo variety for Chicago, tying a franchise record set in September of 1965. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, named the American League Player of the Month for June after batting .420 in the month, went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs Saturday -- his fifth multi-hit game in the last seven. A pair of pitchers who have a combined one win in their last 18 starts square off Sunday when Houston's Collin McHugh opposes White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH José Quintana (5-8, 3.18 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (5-5, 4.58)

Quintana's winless drought reached nine starts when he surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings in a 4-0 loss to Minnesota on Tuesday. It marked the fourth time during a 0-7 rut that he's permitted at least four runs and continued a troubling trend that has seen him surrender six homers in his last four starts. Quintana has made six career starts against the Astros, going 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA.

McHugh is in a dry spell of his own with one victory over his last nine starts, although he's deserved a better fate during a string of three consecutive no-decisions. The 29-year-old allowed two runs over six innings versus the Los Angeles Angels last time out and has yielded a total of five runs over his last three outings -- all quality starts. He fell to 0-2 versus Chicago despite seven innings of two-run ball on May 19.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. White Sox DH Dioner Navarro collected four RBIs Saturday and notched his second triple of the season -- matching his career high.

                2. Astros SS Carlos Correa has knocked in nine runs during a five-game RBI streak.

                3. White Sox CF Adam Eaton had two hits Saturday after going 1-for-17 in his previous five games.

PREDICTION: Astros 5, White Sox 4

The St. Louis Cardinals look to continue their success in the season series and sweep a three-game set against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The Cardinals are 6-2 against Milwaukee in 2016 -- 19-8 since the start of last season -- after allowing the Brewers just one run in the first two contests of the series, including Saturday’s 3-0 triumph.

St. Louis won the last game without All-Star Matt Carpenter (14 homers, 50 RBIs), who is expected back for the series finale after attending to a death in his family, and Kolten Wong stepped up to deliver a two-run triple. Michael Wacha looks to continue his revival as he takes the mound Sunday for the Cardinals against Milwaukee, which has dropped five of its last six and will counter with Chase Anderson. The Brewers are just 9-14 against National League Central opponents and have won 13 of 38 on the road. Shortstop Jonathan Villar has been one of the bright spots for Milwaukee, going 6-for-13 with three walks in the last four games to push his average to .301.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Chase Anderson (4-8, 5.45 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (4-7, 4.42)

Anderson is winless in his last three starts, allowing 17 runs in 11 1/3 innings combined, after yielding just two runs total in his previous three outings. The 28-year-old Oklahoma product has had trouble keeping the ball in the park, giving up 16 homers in 15 starts. Wong is 2-for-3 with a double versus Anderson, who is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two career outings against the Cardinals.

Wacha goes for his third straight win after permitting six runs (five earned) in 12 2/3 innings against a pair of American League opponents. The Iowa native posted a 3.34 ERA in June after struggling to a 6.75 mark in six May outings. Scooter Gennett is 5-for-13 versus Wacha, who pitched six scoreless innings to beat the Brewers on April 11 and improve to 3-0 with a 4.22 ERA against them.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Milwaukee 1B Chris Carter’s homer Friday made him the 12th Brewer to belt at least 20 before the All-Star break.

                    2. St. Louis SS Aledmys Diaz is 9-for-21 with six doubles, a homer and five RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

                    3. The Brewers lead the majors with 68 stolen bases and Villar has 26 of them, more than anyone else in baseball.

                    PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Brewers 2

Pittsburgh improved to 3-1 on their nine-game road trip Saturday as it overcame an early two-run deficit and pulled out a 4-2 triumph in 12 innings for its third straight triumph.

Oakland has dropped three in a row after a stretch during which it won six of seven. Marcus Semien went 0-for-4 on Saturday, marking only the second time in 10 contests he failed to record a hit.

Both the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks have proven to be rude guests to one another recently, as the visiting team had won nine straight in this series until the Diamondbacks ended the run with a comeback victory on Saturday. Arizona will attempt to become the first of the two National League West rivals to win a home series against the other on Sunday, when it hosts the division-leading Giants.

The Diamondbacks used a three-run blast in the eighth inning by Welington Castillo to cap a five-run rally in Saturday's 6-5 triumph and halted a stretch in which the road team had claimed 25 of the previous 30 meetings. The win not only ended Arizona's six-game losing streak overall but also was a much-needed shot in the arm for a club that owns the second-worst home record in the majors at 14-29. The loss was equally rare for San Francisco, which had won 23 of its previous 31 away from home and still owns the best road mark in the majors at 27-16. The Giants (51-32) also missed out on their chance to move ahead of the NL-best Chicago Cubs (51-29) in the win column and tie the Texas Rangers (52-30) for the most victories in the majors.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Albert Suarez (3-1, 3.83 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (4-7, 4.69)
Suarez continued to pitch decently in place of the injured Matt Cain on Tuesday, settling for a no-decision against Oakland after yielding three runs on three hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old has turned in remarkably similar outings in each of his five starts this season, lasting between 4 2/3 and 6 1/3 frames while giving up three runs each time. Suarez has yet to face Arizona, but he has struggled much more on the road (1-1, 5.03 ERA) than at home (2-0, 2.78).
Ray pitched through a blood blister Monday versus Philadelphia and took the loss after surrendering four runs and nine hits while fanning seven over six innings. The native of Tennessee did not issue a free pass for the first time all season and recorded at least six strikeouts for the seventh straight turn, yet he fell to 2-4 with a 5.91 ERA at home. Ray notched his first win of 2016 on April 19 at San Francisco, however, striking out eight across six scoreless innings.

                            WALK-OFFS
                            1. Giants 3B Conor Gillaspie, who sat out Saturday's loss after falling a homer short of the cycle a day earlier, is batting .447 over his last 13 games.
                            2. Arizona 3B Jake Lamb needs one more double and two more homers over the next week to become the fourth player in team history with at least 20 of each before the All-Star break.
                            3. Even with Saturday's setback, San Francisco has won 15 of its last 18 NL West contests.

                            PREDICTION: Giants 5, Diamondbacks 4

The Baltimore Orioles are the most potent home-run hitting team in the majors, but they have been easily outclassed in that regard during their battles with the Seattle Mariners this year. The Mariners hope to continue flexing their muscles and complete a four-game home sweep of the Orioles on Sunday as the clubs wrap up their season series.

Seattle has homered in every game while outscoring the American League East leaders 41-18 and clubbing 14 home runs to Baltimore's five to take five of the six meetings. Seth Smith left the yard for the third time in as many games and Mike Zunino belted two of his own in his season debut as the Mariners matched the Orioles' season homer tally against them in Saturday's 12-6 victory. Baltimore belted a major league-record 56 home runs in June and has hit exactly one in each game of this series to increase its total to 127 - five more than second-place Seattle - but will have revenge on its mind as it tries to avoid a sweep in the finale. The Orioles will square off against Hisashi Iwakuma for the first time since Aug. 12, when the 35-year-old joined Hideo Nomo as the only Japanese pitchers to throw a no-hitter in major-league history.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7, 6.63 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (7-6, 4.34)
Jimenez closed out June with a pair of victories over San Diego, including a road triumph on Tuesday in which he allowed one run on three hits and four walks in five frames. The 32-year-old Dominican, who finished 3-1 last month despite a 7.23 ERA, had been charged with at least five runs in seven of his previous eight outings before facing the Padres. One of those poor starts came in a loss to Seattle on May 17, when Jimenez was tagged for six runs across 4 1/3 innings.
Iwakuma won for the third time in four tries and sixth time in eight starts overall with a victory Tuesday against Pittsburgh, yielding two runs in 6 2/3 innings after having permitted nine runs over his previous 11 2/3 frames. The outing marked the first time in 10 turns the Tokyo native gave up fewer than three runs and only the second time in his last nine trips to the mound he did not surrender at least one home run. Iwakuma is 1-2 with a 2.51 ERA in four career starts against the Orioles.

                                WALK-OFFS
                                1. Smith is batting .375 with three home runs and eight RBIs in six games against Baltimore and .268 with six homers and 26 RBIs in 64 contests against every other opponent this season.
                                2. Orioles 1B Chris Davis has homered in each of his last two contests to run his career total to 182 - tied with Ken Singleton for eighth in team history.
                                3. Seattle has swatted 64 of its 122 homers at Safeco Field, trailing only Baltimore's 68 home runs at Camden Yards for the most by a club in its home park this season.

                                PREDICTION: Mariners 8, Orioles 6
