    Preview: White Sox at Astros

    Current Conditions - Houston

    CLOUDY 93 °F
    Wind: S 12
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Chicago White Sox (40-40) at Houston Astros (43-37)
    DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST

    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Left-hander Chris Sale goes for his major league-leading 14th victory when the visiting Chicago White Sox continue a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon. The surging Astros extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-0 shutout of the White Sox in the opener of a 10-game homestand.

Sale has won his last four starts to move within one victory of his highest total since posting a career-high 17 wins in 2012. He dominated the Astros with a complete-game gem on May 19 to improve to 4-1 with a razor-thin 0.66 ERA in five starts against them. Houston, however, has won 11 of 12 games to move a season-high six games over .500 and climb back among the wild-card leaders. It was the second shutout loss in four games for Chicago, which has lost 30 of 47 games since starting the season 23-10.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (13-2, 2.79 ERA) vs. Astros RH Doug Fister (8-4, 3.36)

Sale rebounded from a bit of a rough patch with three straight strong outings, allowing a total of six runs while striking out 23 and walking only four in 22 innings. The 6-foot-6 left-hander has overcome six homers allowed during his current winning streak, including a pair versus Toronto last time out. Jose Altuve is 6-for-18 versus Sale, who owns a 6-1 record and 1.99 ERA in eight road starts.

Fister may not have the numbers to rival Sale's, but he was riding a 10-start unbeaten streak until surrendering three homers and four runs in a 6-1 loss at Kansas City last time out. Fister had recorded a quality start in 11 of his previous 12 turns and was 7-0 during his unbeaten run, including a 5-3 victory at Chicago on May 18. Fister will be fortunate to miss injured Melky Cabrera, who is 7-for-17 against him.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Altuve went 0-for-4 Friday to snap his 11-game hitting streak.

    2. White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Cabrera (wrist) could return to the lineup Sunday.

    3. Astros CF Carlos Gomez ended a 15-game homerless drought Friday, but he has 11 RBIs in the last 14 games.

PREDICTION: White Sox 4, Astros 3

        Preview: Marlins at Braves

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Miami Marlins (42-38) at Atlanta Braves (27-53)
        DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST
        WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

There is no denying when Jose Fernandez is locked in the Miami Marlins’ ace is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and he is a big reason why the club finds itself in postseason contention as July begins. Fernandez starts the third of a four-game series Saturday at the Atlanta Braves looking to win for the 10th time in his past 12 starts.

Fernandez also played a big role in Miami’s 7-5 victory on Friday, lining a two-run double as a pinch-hitter in the 12th inning, and Marcell Ozuna went 4-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs as the Marlins ended a three-game losing streak. Braves infielder Jace Peterson did not start but came on as a defensive replacement and finished with a double, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. Atlanta rallied to tie the game on Tyler Flowers’ ninth-inning homer. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is batting .403 in his past 16 games with seven doubles, three homers and eight RBIs.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (10-3, 2.28 ERA) vs. Braves RH Lucas Harrell (2014: 0-3, 9.49)

Fernandez struck out 13 in seven innings to beat the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, completing a month in which the 23-year-old posted a 1.67 ERA and struck out 42 with only five walks. He held the Braves to one hit in seven innings in his previous start June 21, but was not involved the decision. Fernandez ranks third in the National League in strikeouts (138) and pitchers’ WAR (3.3), and fifth in WHIP (0.99) and ERA.

Atlanta announced after Friday's game it will turn to Harrell, who has appeared in 10 games with Triple-A Gwinnett and is 18-33 with a 4.84 ERA in 88 major-league games (62 starts) with the Chicago White Sox and Houston from 2010-2014. The 31-year-old, who is 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA with Gwinnett this season, last pitched in the majors with Houston in 2014 and was 11-11 with a 3.76 ERA for the Astros in 2012. Harrell pitched six shutout innings Sunday against Charlotte, walking one and striking out five.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Atlanta INF Gordon Beckham is expected to play for Class A Carolina on Saturday as he recovers from a left hamstring strain, and could be activated from the disabled list early next week.

        2. Marlins 2B Derek Dietrich was hit by a pitch for a major-league leading 16th time Friday, after being plunked twice in Thursday’s series opener.

        3. Braves CF Ender Inciarte left Friday after a hard slide into second base on a steal attempt in the fifth inning and is day-to-day with a right groin injury.

            Current Conditions - St. Petersburg

            Wind: N 5
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: Detroit Tigers (42-38) at Tampa Bay Rays (33-46)
            DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
            LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cameron Maybin is off to the best start in his career and the Detroit Tigers’ center fielder has been especially productive against the Tampa Bay Rays, going 13-for-19 with 10 RBIs. Maybin looks to extend his hitting streak to eight contests and lead the Tigers to their fifth consecutive victory when they visit the Rays on Saturday afternoon in the third of a four-game set.

Maybin has six hits in the first two games of the series and Victor Martinez belted a pair of homers while knocking in six runs Friday in Detroit’s 10-2 victory to extend his hitting streak to five contests. Veteran Justin Verlander takes the hill for the Tigers on Saturday as they try to move five games over .500 for the first time this season and he will oppose promising rookie Blake Snell for struggling Tampa Bay. The Rays gave up 20 runs in the last two games and have dropped 14 of 16 contests overall while plummeting to last place in the American League East. Logan Forsythe has been one of the bright lights for Tampa Bay, going 13-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (7-6, 4.30 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (1-2, 3.54)

Verlander comes in off one of his worst starts of the season when he allowed eight runs and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings against Cleveland on Sunday. The former AL MVP had gone 3-0 in his previous four outings in June, permitting nine runs in 27 2/3 frames combined. Desmond Jennings (hamstring, day-to-day) is 4-for-11 with a pair of homers against Verlander, who is 7-3 with a 3.49 ERA lifetime versus the Rays.

Snell notched his first major league victory in his fourth start last time out when he yielded four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings against Boston on Monday. The 23-year-old had given up two or fewer earned runs in his first three starts, but has walked 10 combined over his last three. Snell has not yet matched his high of six strikeouts in his debut against the New York Yankees and opponents are batting .301 against him.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Tampa Bay SS Brad Miller matched his career high with his 11th homer Friday and has reached double digits three straight seasons.

            2. Martinez, who has 11 RBIs during a current five-game hitting streak, is batting .354 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs in 81 career games against the Rays.

            3. Tampa Bay UTIL Taylor Motter was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Friday’s game and OF Steven Souza Jr. (hip) was activated from the disabled list.

                Preview: Royals at Phillies

                Current Conditions - Philadelphia

                SUNNY 87 °F
                Wind: WSW 14
                5-Day Forecast
GAME: Kansas City Royals (42-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-45)
                DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 5:50 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
                LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After being booed off the field in their previous homestand, the Philadelphia Phillies received a more favorable reaction from the Citizens Bank Park faithful by adding to the Kansas City Royals' road woes in the opener of their three-game set Friday. Winners of four in a row and six of their last eight, the Phillies look to continue their run of good fortune on Saturday as they vie for a second straight series victory.

Philadelphia is singing a distinctly different tune since getting drastically outscored 42-9 en route to being swept at home from June 15-20 as part of a season-high nine-game losing skid. Cody Asche has turned it on since the previous homestand, going 13-for-33 with seven doubles and as many RBIs in his last nine contests - including a run-scoring double in Friday's 4-3 victory. With all due respect to the Missouri native, Kansas City's Kendrys Morales has been blistering-hot as his two-run homer Friday extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he is 17-for-28 with four blasts, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Alcides Escobar has been pretty hot in his own right as he recorded his ninth multi-hit performance during his 12-game hitting streak for the Royals, who fell to 15-26 away from Kauffman Stadium.

TV: 5:50 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (3-1, 3.24 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Nola (5-7, 4.45)

Duffy hopes his success in June carries over into the new month as he allowed just 13 runs in six outings (36 innings) en route to a 3-1 mark. The 27-year-old, who was named the franchise's pitcher of the month for June, matched a career high by going eight innings while permitting two runs and striking out eight in a 6-2 victory over St. Louis on Monday. Duffy has struggled to keep the ball in the park, however, surrendering 10 homers in his last seven trips to the mound.

Nola is 0-3 with a bloated 15.23 ERA in his last four starts after yielding five runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus San Francisco on Sunday. The 23-year-old hasn't escaped the fourth inning in any of his last four outings and allowed 25 runs and 32 hits in that span. Manager Pete Mackanin told reporters prior to the series opener that Saturday's start is "very important" for the struggling Nola, who will be making the 30th trip to the mound and first of his career versus Kansas City.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera went deep and drove in two runs in the series opener to improve to 10-for-24 with two homers, four RBIs and seven runs scored in his last five games.

                2. Kansas City C Salvador Perez is 1-for-13 with four strikeouts in his last three contests.

                3. Phillies RF Peter Bourjos is riding a 10-game hitting streak while 3B Maikel Franco has recorded multi-hit performances in four of his last seven contests.

                PREDICTION: Royals 3, Phillies 2

                    5-Day Forecast
GAME: Los Angeles Angels (32-48) at Boston Red Sox (43-36)
                    DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 7:15 PM EST
                    WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston Red Sox look to make it two in a row to start a crucial homestand when they continue a three-game series with the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. Following a 2-4 road trip that capped a 10-16 June and increased the heat on manager John Farrell, the Red Sox began a nine-game stretch at Fenway Park with a 5-4 win over the Angels on Friday.

An offense that was limited to five hits - all singles - in a shutout loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday erupted for 16 hits versus four Los Angeles pitchers. David Ortiz had three of those hits, including his 522nd career homer, and is hitting .453 during an 18-game hitting streak at home. Angels lefty Hector Santiago opposes Clay Buchholz in a matchup of struggling veterans on Saturday. Buchholz has been awarded another start as he attempts to regain his footing in the rotation, but he has not put anything in stone after allowing eight runs in 11 1/3 innings since returning to a starting role.

                    TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Hector Santiago (4-4, 5.27 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (3-8, 5.90)

This will be the 100th career start for Santiago, who has lasted at least six innings in each of his last three. However, he was reached for a season high-tying six runs in six frames in a no-decision against Oakland his last time out. The 28-year-old is 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in three games (two starts) in his career at Fenway Park, and Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is 5-for-8 with a double against Santiago.

Buchholz has failed to complete six innings in each of his last three starts after giving up five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 frames at Texas on Sunday. He walked a season-high five batters while striking out three and continues to sport a career-worst strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.44). Angels stars Albert Pujols and Mike Trout are a combined 12-for-31 with three homers against Buchholz, who owns a 4.83 ERA in 12 career starts against Los Angeles.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Ortiz has also reached safely in 28 consecutive home games.

                    2. Angels 1B C.J. Cron slugged a grand slam to provide all of his team's offense on Friday and is 7-for-18 with six RBIs during a four-game hitting streak.

                    3. Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez (side) missed the series opener and is considered day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 7, Angels 5

                        Preview: Cubs at Mets

                        Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Chicago Cubs (51-28) at New York Mets (42-37)
                        DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
                        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets’ dormant offense has sprung back to life, and they’ll try for another powerful performance against a tough opponent Saturday. The Mets hope the momentum from Friday’s 10-2 rout of the visiting Chicago Cubs will carry over to the third of the four-game set against reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta.

The Mets slugged five home runs Friday, chasing starter Jason Hammel early to beat the Cubs for the second straight night. The offensive outburst was a welcomed sight for New York, which had totaled only 13 runs in its previous six games and had four homers over its last eight contests. The Mets entered the series having lost nine straight regular-season games against the Cubs, though their four-game sweep in last year’s NL Championship Series changed the complexion of the matchup. The Cubs still own the best record in the majors and a 10-game lead atop the NL Central, but they’ve lost eight of their last 12.
                        TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (12-2, 2.10 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (6-4, 2.86)
Arrieta had a rough month of June by his lofty standards, going 3-2 with a 3.54 ERA in five starts. The 30-year-old was not sharp Monday at Cincinnati, but he picked up the win despite allowing five runs and walking five over five innings. Arrieta is 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA in five starts against the Mets.
After leaving his previous start in the first inning when he took a liner off the hand, Colon showed no ill effects Sunday at Atlanta. The 43-year-old limited the Braves to one run and six hits over seven innings but was tagged with his first loss since May 18. Colon has faced the Cubs six times, but only twice in the past decade, going 0-1 and allowing two runs in 14 innings.

                        WALK-OFFS
                        1. Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday or Sunday, while OF Curtis Granderson (calf) could be headed to the DL.
                        2. Cubs OF Jason Heyward (7-for-17, homer) and 2B/OF Ben Zobrist (8-for-14, four homers) have enjoyed success against Colon.
                        3. Chicago is 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position in the series.

The Washington Nationals have rebounded in a big way after a season-high seven-game losing skid threatened to knock them off their perch atop the National League East. A winner of six in a row, Washington will look to secure a series victory and hand the reeling Cincinnati Reds yet another setback on Saturday when the clubs continue their four-game set in the nation's capital.

Although the official fireworks presentation was cancelled due to the sheer length of the contest, Ben Revere ignited a celebration on Friday with an RBI double to cap a 3-2 victory in 14 innings and improve to 8-for-19 in his last four games. Daniel Murphy drove in a pair of runs and is 13-for-33 with two homers, nine RBIs and seven runs scored in his last eight contests, but is 0-for-6 versus Saturday starter Dan Straily. Cincinnati simply can't buy a break with losses in 11 of its last 13 contests, although Adam Duvall has proven to be a bright spot in an otherwise bleak season. The 27-year-old recorded his third multi-hit performance in his last five games on Friday, collecting five RBIs in that stretch.

                            TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Dan Straily (4-5, 4.38 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (7-4, 3.30)

Straily suffered his third straight loss in horrific fashion on Monday, as the 27-year-old was blitzed for season highs in both runs (seven) and hits (nine) allowed in a campaign-worst 3 2/3 innings of an 11-8 setback to the Chicago Cubs. Straily was taken deep on two occasions and issued three walks for the ninth time in his last 13 outings. The road hasn't been kind to Straily, who is just 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA in six starts (eight appearances) this season.

Ross improved to 4-0 in his last seven outings on Monday despite allowing four runs on 10 hits over six innings of an 11-4 triumph against the New York Mets. The 23-year-old kept the ball in the park for just the second time in his last 10 trips to the mound. Ross will be making his 29th career start and first versus Cincinnati.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto, who is 10-for-28 in his last seven games, is 5-for-9 with two doubles and two runs scored in the first two contests of the series.

                            2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon is 1-for-10 with three strikeouts in his last three games after collecting seven hits in his previous four.

                            3. Reds 3B Eugeno Suarez has recorded nine singles during his six-game hitting streak.

                            PREDICTION: Reds 4, Nationals 3

The Pittsburgh Pirates seek their first three-game winning streak on the road since late April when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game interleague series. Pittsburgh has struggled away from home this season, going 17-22, but improved to 2-1 on its nine-game trek and looks to win three straight on the road for the first time since capturing four in a row (one in Arizona, three in Colorado) from April 24-27.

The bottom half of the lineup came up big for the Pirates in the series opener, as Matt Joyce, Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer and Chris Stewart combined to go 6-for-15 with six RBIs and four runs scored, with Mercer launching a solo homer. Oakland has lost two straight after a stretch during which it won six of seven contests and failed to score at least six runs for the first time in eight games. Marcus Semien did not slow down on Friday as he belted his career-high 17th home run - giving him four blasts and nine RBIs over his last six contests. Coco Crisp received a day off but is expected to return to the lineup Saturday as he has gone 11-for-29 with 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored during an eight-game hitting streak.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (1-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Rich Hill (8-3, 2.25)

Kuhl will be making his second career start after recording the victory against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers in his major-league debut on Sunday. The 23-year-old native of Delaware worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. Kuhl went 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis prior to being called up by the Pirates.

Hill looks to win his sixth consecutive outing as he makes his first start since May 29 due to a strained right groin that landed him on the disabled list. The 36-year-old from Boston has allowed fewer than three earned runs in nine of his 11 turns and has kept the ball in the park this season, serving up only two homers in 64 innings. Hill has posted a 3-1 record and 3.79 ERA in seven career starts against Pittsburgh.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                2. Oakland optioned LHP Dillon Overton to Nashville and recalled INF Tyler Ladendorf from the Triple-A club.

                                3. Pirates RF Gregory Polanco played in the outfield Friday for the first time since June 23 due to a sore left leg and went 0-for-4.
