      Preview: Giants at Diamondbacks

      Current Conditions - Phoenix

      SUNNY 90 °F
      Wind: N 5
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: San Francisco Giants (51-31) at Arizona Diamondbacks (36-46)
      DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
      WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants have caught the Chicago Cubs for most victories in the National League and look to continue their strong play when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. San Francisco (51-31) recorded a 6-4 victory in Friday's series opener to win for the 15th time in its last 20 games.

The Giants are receiving surprising contributions from Conor Gillaspie, who fell a homer shy of the cycle Friday while improving to 11-for-20 during his five-game hitting streak. San Francisco also received solid performances from Jarrett Parker (2-for-4, home run) and the recently recalled Grant Green (2-for-4, two RBIs) while backup catcher Trevor Brown drove in two runs with Buster Posey resting after playing in the previous 20 games. Arizona is 0-5 at home against the Giants this season and scheduled starter Patrick Corbin has fared miserably at Chase Field with an 0-5 record and 7.02 ERA in seven home starts. Jake Lamb has homered in three consecutive games for the Diamondbacks and is 11-for-29 with four blasts and 11 RBIs over his last eight contests.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (8-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (4-6, 4.99)

Samardzija has allowed six runs in back-to-back starts and three of his last five outings. He is 1-3 with a 6.89 ERA in his last six starts after posting a 2.54 ERA over his first 10 turns. Samardzija defeated the Diamondbacks on May 13, when he gave up one run and eight hits over eight innings, and is 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 10 career appearances (five starts) versus Arizona.

Corbin received a no-decision against Colorado in his last turn despite walking five and allowing six runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. The season has been a consistent struggle as he posted a 4.88 ERA in April, followed by marks of 5.03 in May and 5.04 in June. Corbin is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 12 career starts against the Giants and received a no-decision on May 14, when he gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 frames.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke (oblique) wasn't placed on the disabled list Friday but likely won't make another start until next weekend.

      2. San Francisco CF Denard Span (neck) was a late scratch from Friday's lineup and manager Bruce Bochy is hopeful he will return on Saturday.

      3. Arizona recalled C Tuffy Gosewisch from Triple-A Reno and placed OF Rickie Weeks Jr. on the bereavement list.

      PREDICTION: Giants 5, Diamondbacks 2

          Preview: Yankees at Padres

          Current Conditions - San Diego

          CLOUDY 66 °F
          Wind: SW 12
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: New York Yankees (39-40) at San Diego Padres (34-46)
          DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres will try to maintain an impressive offensive streak at home when they continue a three-game interleague series with the New York Yankees on Saturday. Following a 7-6 victory in the series opener, the Padres have posted at least five runs in eight straight games at Petco Park.

However, San Diego is only 4-4 in that stretch and nearly saw its new-look bullpen cough up a big lead against the Yankees, who scored four times in the ninth inning and finally were retired with the tying run on third base. Wil Myers followed up a scorching month of June (.327, 11 home runs) with a two-run shot for the Padres, who also received a solo blast from rookie Ryan Schimpf. Brian McCann went deep for New York, giving him three homers in his last three games. The Yankees started the contest without right fielder Carlos Beltran (hamstring), who delivered a pinch-hit double in the ninth and was the runner stranded at third when the game ended.

          TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Ivan Nova (5-5, 5.32 ERA) vs. Padres LH Drew Pomeranz (7-7, 2.76)

After working at least six innings in five consecutive starts, Nova has failed to go beyond the fifth in his last three turns, giving up 15 runs in 14 innings during that stretch. He owns a 6.98 ERA and 1.55 WHIP on the road this year but tossed seven scoreless frames in his only previous appearance at Petco Park in 2013. Myers (4-for-13, home run) has had some success versus Nova while Melvin Upton Jr. and Alexei Ramirez are a combined 7-for-38 against him.

Pomeranz posted his sixth start of the season without allowing an earned run when he limited Cincinnati to three hits over seven scoreless frames last Saturday. He has fanned at least six batters in six consecutive outings and entered the weekend ranked sixth in the National League with 10.42 strikeouts per nine innings. The 27-year-old held the Yankees to one earned run over seven innings in his only previous start against them back in 2014.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Yankees SS Didi Gregorius went 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Friday and is batting .429 with two homers and five RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

          2. The Padres on Friday placed RHP Erik Johnson (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list.

          3. San Diego is 18-7 on Fridays and Saturdays but 16-38 on all other days of the week.

          PREDICTION: Padres 5, Yankees 3

              5-Day Forecast
GAME: Baltimore Orioles (47-32) at Seattle Mariners (41-39)

The Baltimore Orioles suddenly have stopped scoring runs in bushels and strive to break out of their offensive funk when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game set. Baltimore managed just five runs and 13 hits while losing the first two games of the series after averaging 8.3 runs during a seven-game winning streak.

Manny Machado went hitless in four at-bats on Friday to halt his 10-game hitting streak and said he isn't concerned with the quietness of the bats. "It's baseball. You're not going to hit every night, plain and simple," Machado told reporters. "You keep grinding it and keeping doing what you do, and you get through it." The Mariners are 5-2 on their nine-game homestand and received a boost on Friday from Dae-Ho Lee, who went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to end a 16-game power drought. Seattle's Robinson Cano was hitless in four at-bats after going 11-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Tyler Wilson (4-5, 4.50 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (1-3, 4.15)

Wilson defeated Tampa Bay in his last turn despite surrendering five runs and 10 hits in five innings. He has allowed five runs in three of his last five starts but mixed in a dominant performance in which he blanked Boston on three hits over eight frames. Wilson is 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against the Mariners.

Paxton also gave up five runs over five innings in a no-decision against St. Louis his last time out, yielding eight hits while striking out seven. He has fanned 41 batters in 34 1/3 frames but also has a 1.67 WHIP and .320 batting average against. Paxton received a no-decision in his lone career start against Baltimore on Aug. 2, 2014, when he allowed two runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw a 43-pitch bullpen session on Friday and is on pace to be activated after the All-Star break.

              2. 1B Chris Davis hit his 181st homer as a member of the Orioles on Friday - one behind Ken Singleton for eighth place in franchise history.

              3. Seattle LF Seth Smith is 4-for-8 with two homers in the series and 6-for-12 over his last three games.

              PREDICTION: Mariners 7, Orioles 4

                  5-Day Forecast
GAME: Colorado Rockies (37-42) at Los Angeles Dodgers (45-37)
                  DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST

The Colorado Rockies hope to have two key players back in the lineup as they attempt to halt their three-game slide when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Rookie shortstop Trevor Story, who ranks second on the team in home runs (19) and third in RBIs (50), has not played since Tuesday due to a bruised right middle finger while second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who leads the club in triples (five) and stolen bases (seven) has made one pinch-hitting appearance since Sunday thanks to a bruised left knee.

The double-play combination's absence was noticeable on Friday as the Rockies managed only three hits in a 5-0 loss. The series-opening victory was the fourth in five overall contests for the Dodgers, who have won seven in a row at home. Corey Seager is wielding a hot bat as he enters Saturday with a 14-game hitting streak during which he has gone 24-for-57 (.421). Los Angeles lost Yasiel Puig to a left shoulder injury in the seventh inning on Friday, but the right fielder is expected to be in the lineup Saturday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (6-5, 5.84 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (6-3, 4.67)

Bettis remained unbeaten in his last four starts as he escaped with a no-decision against Arizona on Sunday after surrendering seven runs on 12 hits and three walks in five innings. The 27-year-old Texan has struggled keeping opponents off the scoreboard, allowing four or more runs in all but two of his 16 turns this season. Bettis has posted a 4.58 ERA in six career games (three starts) against Los Angeles but has yet to record a decision.

Kazmir's unbeaten streak reached nine starts Monday as he recorded a win at Pittsburgh despite yielding four runs on four hits and four walks over five innings. The 32-year-old native of Houston, who hasn't lost since May 9 against the New York Mets, has served up only two home runs in his last seven outings. Kazmir has made two career starts versus Colorado, going 1-0 while yielding seven runs and 12 hits - four homers - over 11 frames (5.73 ERA).

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Rockies RHP Tyler Chatwood (back) and LHP Jake McGee (knee) both appear ready to return to action.

                  2. Los Angeles placed LHP Clayton Kershaw (back) and OF Joc Pederson (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list, activated newly acquired RHP Bud Norris and purchased the contract of OF Will Venable from Triple-A Oklahoma City while designating RHP Layne Somsen for assignment.

                  3. Colorado LHP Chris Rusin (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session over the weekend.
