    Preview: Padres at Reds

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: San Diego Padres (31-43) at Cincinnati Reds (28-45)
    DATE/TIME: Friday, June 24 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio

The San Diego Padres vie for their fifth victory in six contests when they continue their four-game set against the host Cincinnati Reds on Friday. San Diego turned on the power in the series opener, using home runs by Matt Kemp and Derek Norris to erase a three-run deficit and post a 7-4 victory.

Norris has collected nine RBIs over his last six contests and has belted five of his 10 home runs this season since June 4. Adam Duvall hit his 21st shot of the year for Cincinnati, which has lost six of its last eight games. Duvall has been hot of late, swatting four homers and driving in 10 runs over his last 10 contests. Jay Bruce was cooled off by the Padres on Thursday, going 0-for-4 to end an eight-game hitting streak during which he registered four multi-hit performances and collected 11 RBIs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Colin Rea (3-3, 5.02 ERA) vs. Reds LH Cody Reed (0-0, 5.14)

Rea's winless streak reached seven starts on Saturday, when he settled for a no-decision against Washington after giving up two runs - one earned - and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. It was a nice bounce-back effort by the 25-year-old native of Iowa, who was tagged by Miami for eight runs - six earned - on nine hits and two walks in 2 2/3 frames on June 13. Rea won his only career start against Cincinnati despite yielding three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Reed will be making his second career start since having his contract purchased from Triple-A Louisville. The 23-year-old from Memphis struck out nine over seven innings at Houston on Saturday and escaped with a no-decision after surrendering four runs on six hits - two homers - and three walks. Reed went 6-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts at Louisville before joining the Reds.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Reds RHP Homer Bailey, who is looking to return from Tommy John surgery, is slated to throw two innings for Louisville on Monday as he begins another rehab assignment after being shut down in late April.

    2. San Diego OF Jon Jay hopes to return during the series as he has been sidelined since being hit by a pitch on Sunday.

    3. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto appeared as a pinch-hitter Thursday after being kept out of the starting lineup due to a stomach bug.

    PREDICTION: Reds 6, Padres 3

        Preview: Indians at Tigers

        Current Conditions - Detroit

        P/SUNNY 91 °F
        Wind: W 17
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cleveland Indians (41-30) at Detroit Tigers (38-35)
        DATE/TIME: Friday, June 24 - 7:10 PM EST
        WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The red-hot Cleveland Indians hold a three-game lead atop the American League Central but face a division rival that is also heating up when they visit the Detroit Tigers on Friday night in the opener of a three-game set. The Indians are riding a six-game winning streak while the Tigers are coming off a four-game sweep of visiting Seattle.

Cleveland owns the AL's second-best run differential at plus-67 after outscoring the Rays 19-5 during the three-game sweep, which was capped by consecutive complete-game three-hitters from Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer. "Guys are having fun," Bauer said. "Guys are playing well, which contributes to the fun. Hopefully we can keep it going." The Tigers have lost all six meetings between the clubs in a two-week span this season, getting outscored 38-12, but they are four games behind Cleveland following the sweep of the Mariners that included a pair of extra-inning victories. Detroit sends Jordan Zimmermann to the mound Friday to face Danny Salazar, who owns the second-lowest ERA in the AL.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (8-3, 2.23 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 3.24)

Salazar won his fourth consecutive start by holding the Chicago White Sox to two runs and five hits while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings on Saturday. While Salazar has allowed six runs during the four-game winning streak, his teammates are giving him little reason to sweat by amassing 38 runs in that span. Miguel Cabrera is 9-for-26 with two homers and 10 strikeouts versus Salazar, who owns a 2-4 record and 4.55 ERA in 10 starts against Detroit.

Zimmermann turned in his best effort in weeks, limiting Kansas City to one run on four hits over a season high-tying eight innings last time out, although he did not factor in the decision. It was a strong bounce-back effort for Zimmermann, who was shelled for 13 runs and 21 hits over his previous two turns. Zimmermann is 5-2 with a 4.43 ERA in seven starts at Comerica Park this season and won his only appearance versus Cleveland in 2013 despite giving up six runs.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Cleveland finished June with an 11-0 record at Progressive Field -- its first undefeated month at home with a minimum of 10 games in franchise history.

        2. Tigers OF Steven Moya is 7-for-16 with three homers, four RBIs and five runs scored in his last four games.

        3. Indians LF Michael Brantley received a cortisone shot in his surgically repaired shoulder on Tuesday.

        PREDICTION: Indians 4, Tigers 2

The New York Mets breathed a big sigh of relief off the field Thursday, when Noah Syndergaard’s elbow exam showed no structural damage, but their recent struggles against the Atlanta Braves continued. The Mets continue their four-game series against the host Braves on Friday hoping to have outfielder Yoenis Cespedes back in the lineup after the slugger left Wednesday’s game against Kansas City with a sprained left wrist.

There was good news for the Mets during Thursday’s series opener, as Alejandro De Aza - who started for Cespedes - ended an 0-for-20 slump with an RBI double while Neil Walker snapped an 0-for-15 skid with two hits and two RBIs in a 4-3 defeat. Atlanta, which swept the Mets in New York last weekend as part of its six-game winning streak, rallied on Adonis Garcia’s two-run homer in the eighth inning - after a controversial call at home plate in the seventh kept the Braves from tying the game. Jace Peterson, who hit .182 before being demoted to the minors on May 1 and .186 at Triple-A Gwinnett, is batting .341 with six RBIs and nine runs scored since being recalled on June 10. The Braves have won seven of their last eight contests and are 16-19 under interim manager Brian Snitker, who was ejected for arguing the call at the plate on Thursday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (7-3, 2.74 ERA) vs. Braves RH Aaron Blair (0-4, 7.19)

Matz makes the 19th start of his career against a familiar foe, having gone 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four outings against Atlanta. He already has defeated the Braves twice this season and held them to two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of a no-decision on Saturday. The 25-year-old won seven straight starts after losing his season debut but is 0-2 with a 4.24 ERA this month.

Blair remains in search of his first major-league victory, but the rookie pitched well in a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday, giving up three runs and five hits with just one walk in six innings. He had allowed six or more runs three times in his previous five outings, walking 11 over 13 1/3 frames in his first three outings in June. Blair, who makes the 11th start of his career Friday, has issued 26 walks and allowed seven homers in 46 1/3 innings.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Garcia started Thursday after making just two pinch-hitting appearances since suffering a left ankle injury on June 16.

            2. The Mets won five of their first six meetings with Atlanta this season but have lost four in a row to even the season series.

            3. Braves C A.J. Pierzynski needs one double to reach 400 for his career.

            PREDICTION: Braves 5, Mets 3

                Preview: Red Sox at Rangers

                Current Conditions - Arlington

                P/SUNNY 90 °F
                Wind: SE 12
                5-Day Forecast
GAME: Boston Red Sox (40-32) at Texas Rangers (47-26)
                DATE/TIME: Friday, June 24 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas

David Price has been the definition of consistent with eight straight quality starts under his belt, although his team's high-powered offense has lacked much juice in his last four. The 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner will have a tall task on his hands as the Boston Red Sox visit his personal house of horrors on Friday when they open a three-game series versus the red-hot Texas Rangers.

Price has received just seven runs of support over his last four outings, but Boston has scored 14 in its last two and salvaged the finale of a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday to conclude a 4-6 homestand. Texas, on the other hand, has won eight of its last nine to seize the American League's best record at 47-26, which is also a franchise record through 73 games. Ian Desmond went deep in the Rangers' 6-4 win over Cincinnati on Wednesday and is 13-for-31 with three homers and eight runs scored in his last nine contests. In addition to Desmond, Price would be wise to keep a keen eye on both Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre, with the former going 10-for-25 in his career versus the hurler while the latter is 10-for-33.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (8-4, 4.24 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Nick Martinez (1-1, 5.14)

Signed to a seven-year, $217 million contract in the offseason, Price improved to 4-3 with a 2.47 ERA in his last eight outings after allowing one run in eight strong innings of a 2-1 victory over Seattle on Sunday. The 30-year-old has pitched eight frames in each of his last three outings, permitting just six runs and striking out 25 against two walks. For all of his success, Price has struggled versus Texas to the tune of a 4-8 mark with a 5.27 ERA in 16 career appearances (including postseason) - and his ERA is a ghastly 6.54 in six regular-season starts at Globe Life Park.

Martinez will receive his second start in place of right-hander Yu Darvish, who remains on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder discomfort. The 25-year-old Martinez struggled in his first start this season after permitting three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings versus St. Louis. The right-hander was fortunate to walk away with a no-decision in that outing, but suffered the loss in his lone career appearance against Boston despite yielding two runs in seven innings on May 28, 2015.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Boston SS Xander Bogaerts is 6-for-14 with four RBIs in his last three games, including a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to secure an 8-7 win over the White Sox on Thursday.

                2. Texas 1B Prince Fielder has hit safely in five straight games after going 2-for-17 in his previous five.

                3. Prior to Friday's contest, the Rangers will honor former OF David Murphy, who played from 2007-2013 with the club.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 4, Rangers 2

Toronto right-hander Aaron Sanchez looks to win his seventh consecutive decision when the Blue Jays open a three-game set against the host Chicago White Sox on Friday. Sanchez's lone loss of the season came on April 22 and he has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his 14 outings.

Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion leads the major leagues with 62 RBIs and has been scorching hot with nine homers and 22 RBIs in June. "I feel good right now," Encarnacion told reporters through team translator Josue Peley. "I've seen the numbers that I've had in this month compared to other months. It's impressive, but I just feel good at the plate right now." The White Sox were in position to record a four-game road sweep at Boston but let a late lead slip away on Thursday and dropped an 8-7 decision in 10 innings. First baseman Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer among two hits and has 10 multi-hit outings in June.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (7-1, 3.35 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (2-6, 4.16)

Sanchez is expected to be moved to the bullpen later in the season but he is thriving in the rotation and has struck out 89 in 91 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old defeated the Baltimore Orioles in each of his last two starts despite serving up four homers in the first one. Sanchez has yet to lose on the road and is 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA and .205 batting average against in eight starts.

Rodon has given up two or fewer earned runs in five of his past six outings but has just one victory during the stretch. He received a no-decision against Cleveland in his last turn when he gave up two runs, eight hits and struck out a season-best eight in 6 1/3 innings. Rodon is just 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA in six home starts this season.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson, the reigning American League MVP, is batting .348 with four homers and 17 RBIs in June.

                    3. Toronto SS Troy Tulowitzki, who recently returned from a quadriceps injury, is 5-for-10 with two homers over the past three games.

The Washington Nationals signed Max Scherzer for times like these -- with the club mired in a five-game losing streak and reeling from a second consecutive one-run defeat. Unbeaten in four starts this month, the Nationals send Scherzer to the mound Friday night as they wrap up a 10-game road trip in the first of three versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Washington's latest defeat came on a costly blunder by center fielder Michael Taylor, who overran a ground ball in the ninth inning to allow two runs to score in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, capping a brutal night in which Taylor stuck out five times. After winning seven of eight, the Nationals have scored 12 runs during the five-game skid, including six in the sweep by the Dodgers. Milwaukee halted a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 loss at Oakland on Wednesday to close out a nine-game road trip. Opposing Scherzer will be right-hander Zach Davies, who is unbeaten in his last nine starts.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (8-4, 3.29 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (5-3, 3.62)

Although he had to settle for a no-decision last time out at San Diego, Scherzer continued his string of dominant outings by striking out 10 batters while allowing one run on four hits. Scherzer is 3-0 in four starts in June, permitting a total of four runs while racking up 38 strikeouts versus three walks over 28 innings. Scherzer is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in four appearances versus Milwaukee and has held former NL MVP Ryan Braun hitless in 10 at-bats.

Davies has been magnificent over his last five starts, posting a 4-0 record and allowing five earned runs over 33 2/3 innings in a remarkable turnaround from his early-season struggles. He did not factor in the decision against the Dodgers in his last turn despite seven innings of one-run ball, the eighth time in his last nine starts that he permitted two earned runs or fewer. He won his last four starts at Miller Park, yielding four earned runs.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Washington has blown a lead in the eighth inning or later in three of its last five games.

                        2. Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett is 9-for-21 with two homers and five RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

                        3. Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy, who entered June batting .397, went 1-for-11 against the Dodgers to drop his average to .347.

                        PREDICTION: Nationals 3, Brewers 2

WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

Houston Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel doesn't have fond memories of the last time he faced the Kansas City Royals, and the results of this season haven't exactly put a smile on his face. The reigning American League Cy Young Award recipient will look to rediscover his form on Friday as the visiting Astros carry a five-game winning streak into the opener of a three-game series versus the Royals.

Keuchel outdueled Edinson Volquez en route to winning Game 3 of the 2015 AL Division Series, but yielded a three-run homer to Kendrys Morales in the eighth inning to spell doom in the set's decisive fifth game. Morales is 8-for-20 in his career versus Keuchel and enters Friday's tilt on an eight-game hitting streak for the Royals, who had won eight of nine before dropping both contests of the World Series rematch against the New York Mets. While Kansas City enjoyed a breather in its schedule on Thursday for the second time in four days, Houston showed no signs of slowing down by posting a 20-8 mark after a sluggish start to the season. Marwin Gonzalez belted a go-ahead triple in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels and is 7-for-22 with a homer, three RBIs and five runs scored in the six games since he took over at first base.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (3-9, 5.32) vs. Royals RH Edinson Volquez (7-6, 4.12)

Keuchel entered Saturday's tilt with Cincinnati with three straight losses and a 1-8 record in his previous 11 outings, but exited the contest with optimism after allowing just two runs in seven strong innings of a no-decision. While the performance thrilled the fans at Minute Maid Park, the 28-year-old hasn't been doing much on the road this season with a 2-6 mark and a gaudy 5.91 ERA. World Series MVP Salvador Perez enters Friday's contest with five homers and 22 hits in his last 13 games, but is just 1-for-12 with three strikeouts versus Keuchel.

Volquez owns a 6-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in nine career regular-season starts versus Houston, but yielded three runs and four walks in 5 2/3 innings in the Game 3 loss. The 32-year-old Dominican enters Friday's contest with a two-game winning streak, although he permitted five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 frames of a 16-5 victory over Detroit on Saturday. Volquez would be wise to keep a keen eye on Carlos Gomez, who is 9-for-31 with three homers in his career against the right-hander.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Kansas City has won 12 of its last 13 home games to improve to a blistering 25-8 at Kauffman Stadium.

                            2. Houston 2B Jose Altuve has hit safely in five straight and 24 of his last 26 contests.

                            3. Royals 3B Cheslor Cuthbert homered in Wednesday's 4-3 setback to the Mets for his sixth hit in five games.

                            PREDICTION: Royals 3, Astros 2

If the Colorado Rockies are going to climb back into the National League West race, they’ll need to stop being such hospitable hosts. The Rockies look to improve on their dismal home record Friday as they continue their four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who opened the set between the division rivals with a 7-6 victory.

The Rockies are 12 games behind first-place San Francisco after falling to 15-17 at home with Thursday’s loss. “We need to take care of games at home,” Colorado's Nolan Arenado told MLB.com. “There's always an urgency to get going. This is in the division. It's a big series for us, a weekend series. It’s a big deal, can put us in a better position." Arenado has become one of the elite players in the majors as he leads the NL with 21 home runs and 61 RBI while batting .296, and Arizona may have a future star in 25-year-old Jake Lamb, who belted his 15th homer on Thursday. Lamb is batting .326 with four homers and 12 RBI over his last 13 games for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of their last seven.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (3-3, 4.83 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (0-1, 2.25)

Bradley turned in another strong outing Sunday at Philadelphia, allowing an unearned run and three hits in six innings. “He is maturing here, and we’re seeing it right in front of us,” manager Chip Hale told reporters. “His stuff to start the game was electric. He was throwing fastballs, and guys were swinging like it was 100 mph.” Bradley is making his second start at Coors Field this season after allowing four runs over six frames in a 10-5 victory on May 9.

Anderson made his second career start on Sunday, allowing two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 3-0 loss to Miami. The 26-year-old Las Vegas native was taken with the 20th overall pick by the Rockies in the 2011 draft and pitched 6 1/3 solid frames in his major-league debut against San Diego on June 12. Anderson was 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA in six combined starts across three minor-league levels this season before being promoted to the Rockies.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. Colorado RF Carlos Gonzalez exited Thursday’s game with a right wrist injury and is listed as day-to-day.

                                2. Arizona RHP Brad Ziegler saw his club-record streak of 43 consecutive saves come to an end on Thursday.

                                3. Rockies RHP Jon Gray (arm fatigue) is expected to make his next start on Monday against Toronto.
