    Re: MLB Betting Info. 6/12

Preview: Cardinals (34-28) at Pirates (32-30)

    Game: 3
    Venue: PNC Park
    Date: June 12, 2016 5:05 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- Baseball is a game of adjustments, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are really being pushed.

As they head into their series finale against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, the Pirates are in a position where they don't know who's going to be available on a daily basis.

The hardest hit over the past week has been the Pirates' bullpen.

In his pregame meeting with reporters, Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle has gotten into a routine of listing which relievers are available and which are not.

On Friday, with no real options, Hurdle said starter Juan Nicasio would be made available for that night's game in lieu of his normal bullpen day but still was expected to make his next scheduled start.

Not only did that game go 12 innings -- St. Louis scored six runs off of Nicasio, the eighth Pirates pitcher, in the 12th -- but No. 1 starter Gerrit Cole left in the third inning because of right triceps soreness.

A sked after that game about the shape of his bullpen and who would be available the rest of the weekend, Hurdle shook his head.

"I don't even know," he said.

Cole was still being evaluated Saturday, another unknown.

All of that is in addition to a steady stream of relievers moving back and forth between the Pirates and Triple-A Indianapolis as the club tries to improve its bullpen performance.

It's not just pitchers. Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli also left Friday's game with what turned out to be a broken hand that required surgery, inducing the Pirates to acquire journeyman catcher Erik Kratz.

On Saturday, Kratz got pressed into duty when catcher Chris Stewart left the game in the seventh after aggravating a sore left ankle on a play at the plate.

Through the rough roster patch, the Pirates have done their best to be resilient, but a 5-1 loss Saturday to the Cardinals was their fourth loss in a row.

    "You move on," Hurdle said.

By contrast, the Cardinals are stable. They are 4-1 on a six-game road trip that concludes Sunday, and with Saturday's 5-1 win moved to 19-12 on the road, assured that they will win their fourth straight series and moved to a season-high six games over .500 at 34-28.

One reason for the good play of late has been the pitching. Carlos Martinez came within two outs of his first career complete game Saturday and stifled the Pirates.

"We're maybe the only people not surprised," manager Mike Matheny said of St. Louis' pitching. "It's just a matter of time, we believe. It's just been frustrating that it's taken a while for it to happen. That should be one of the staples of our team."

Pirates left-hander Jonathan Niese (6-2, 3.93 ERA) is scheduled to go against St. Louis right-hander Mike Leake (4-4, 4.22 ERA) Sunday.

Niese is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his past five starts.

Leake allowed a season-high 10 hits in a no-decision in his last start, Tuesday against Cincinnati. He has won seven of his past eight decisions against the Pirates.

Preview: Dodgers (33-30) at Giants (37-26)

      Game: 3
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: June 12, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants will take a four-game lead atop the National League West into their series finale against the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

But, clearly, the three-time champions since 2010 aren't satisfied.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy responded to Friday's 3-2 loss in the series opener by announcing two significant changes that will impact the look of his team moving forward.

With the Giants having scored just seven runs in the first three games of their current homestand, Bochy has decided to flip-flop two of his key hitters, Matt Duffy and Brandon Belt, in the batting order.

The move paid immediate dividends Saturday when Belt, hitting third, walked with two outs in the first inning and Duffy, slotted fifth, drove him in from second base with an RBI single after clean-up hitting Buster Posey also had walked.

Belt wound up getting on base three times in the game, which is exactly what Bochy is looking for from the guy in the spot ahead of Posey.

And Duffy had two RBIs, the type of production Bochy would like to see if and when teams pitch around the perennial All-Star.

The veteran skipper noted before the game that the move wasn't a one-day deal.

"We're going to see how it looks," he said. "We need to do something to score some more runs."

The veteran manager also announced more clearly defined roles for his bullpen, especially right-hander Cory Gearrin, who will assume injured Sergio Romo's job as chief set-up man for closer Santiago Casilla.

The moves were meant to take some pressure off Casilla, who has been brought into non-save situations in four of his last seven outings.

That role most often had fallen upon Romo in the past. But with the veteran injured, and no end of his rehabilitation from a strained right flexor in sight, Bochy felt he needed to put the rookie Gearrin on alert that those situations would be his for the foreseeable future.

"Part of it is me," Bochy said of recent bullpen issues. "They're going out there for a hitter at a time. A lot of these are young guys. I need to do a better job of letting them know what to expect."

Even after a gut-wrenching, 5-4 loss Saturday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wasn't planning any changes on the eve of the series finale.

"It felt like we had one taken away. It's a team we're chasing and we had a chance to gain ground," Roberts said of Saturday's 10-inning defeat. "But we've still got a chance to win the series, and that's our focus now."

Behind the scenes, Roberts' club was preparing for changes that could give the Dodgers a different look when they next see the Giants in August.

While the Dodgers were excited about 19-year-old Julio Urias getting the opportunity to get his feet wet in the rivalry on Sunday, matched up with Giants veteran Jake Peavy, the club had one eye on injury-rehab starts by more likely postseason starters Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu in the minors.

Also with an eye on future personnel moves the team might make in the playoff race, the Dodgers cleared yet another spot on their 40-man roster by releasing veteran Jose Tabata on Saturday.

The move resulted in the Dodgers eating the remainder of the utility man's $4.5 million guaranteed contract for 2016, plus paying an additional $750,000 to buy out the remainder of his deal.

The Dodgers already had paid veterans Carl Crawford and Alex Guerrero a total of $44 million to terminate their deals earlier this season.

        'Jays aim for three in-a-row'

Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays June 12, 1:05 EST

The closing matchup of a four game series is the baseball betting focus as Toronto Blue Jays host Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternnon at Rogers Center.

According to the current betting odds the Blue Jays enter this contest as -$1.60 to -$1.70 home favorites depending on locale.

Righthander Aaron Sanchez will toe the rubber for John Gibbons' squad, bringing a 5-1 record to the hill with a 2.91 ERA. In his last outing, Sanchez tagged with a no-decision limited Tigers to 2 runs while stiking out a career-high 12 as Jays fell 3-2 in extras. Sanchez will be matching pitches with Orioles righthander Ubaldo Jimenez carrying a 3-6 record, 6.21 ERA. Jimenez snapping a three game skid in his last start gave up one run on nine hits in five-plus innings in Orioles 9-1 victory over Royals.

The presence of today's starters bodes well for Toronto. Sanchez allowing three runs or fewer in 6 of his last 8 starts has won three straight in front of the home audience. On the other side, the Orioles have had issues the last five times the team found itself on the road handing the ball to Jimenez, dropping all five contests outscored 30-9. Additionally, Jimenez starting on the road following a team loss the previous day has been bad news for Baltimore. In the last 13 such situations the Orioles are 2-11. Finally, in road daylight games, Orioles are 0-6 with Jimenez.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (36-25) at Toronto Blue Jays (34-30)
            DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 1:07 PM EST

The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to make a move in the American League East and a series win over the Baltimore Orioles would help. The Blue Jays will try to earn a series victory when they host the Orioles in the finale of the four-game set on Sunday.

The Orioles took the series opener on Friday to run its winning streak to five straight but fell off the pace in the last two contests to fall back into a virtual tie with the Boston Red Sox atop the AL East. The Blue Jays have crawled to within 3 1/2 games of the top spot with wins in the last two games behind the resurgence of Edwin Encarnacion. The slugger went hitless in four straight games before belting a walk-off blast in the 10th inning of Friday’s 4-3 win and continued his destruction of baseballs by going 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs in Saturday’s 11-6 win. Baltimore’s pitching staff allowed a total of three runs in a four-game span but surrendered 20 in the last three contests.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MASN, WJZ (Baltimore), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (3-6, 6.21 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (5-1, 2.91)

Jimenez finally turned in a solid start on Tuesday against Kansas City, allowing one run despite nine hits and three walks in five innings. The Dominican Republic native failed to go six innings in any of his last six starts and yielded at least five runs in all but the last turn. Jimenez did not factor in the decision against Toronto at home on April 20, when he gave up two runs on five hits and four walks in five innings.

Sanchez carried a shutout into the ninth inning at Detroit on Tuesday but settled for a no decision while being charged with two runs and three hits when closer Roberto Osuna allowed the tying run to score. Sanchez struck out 12 in a strong effort and has punched out 76 in a total of 80 1/3 innings on the season. The 22-year-old has made eight career appearances – three starts – against the Orioles in his brief career and owns a 1-2 record with a 5.14 ERA.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Orioles 1B Chris Davis homered in each of the last four games.

            2. Toronto LF Michael Saunders homered in the last two games and recorded at least one extra-base hit in four of the last five.

            3. Baltimore OF Joey Rickard went 3-for-5 on Saturday, matching his hit total from his previous 15 games.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 10, Orioles 3

Dallas Keuchel has managed just three victories in his first 13 starts of 2016 after a remarkable campaign in which he went 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA to win the American League Cy Young Award. The talented left-hander looks to begin a revival on Sunday afternoon when his Houston Astros visit the Tampa Bay Rays for the rubber match of three-game series.

The Astros rallied to edge the Rays 4-3 on Saturday, improving to 2-4 on a nine-game road trip, as Luis Valbuena and Carlos Gomez both went deep late in the contest. Keuchel has dropped two straight and seven of his last eight decisions as he prepares to face fellow lefty Matt Moore in the series finale. Tampa Bay had the winning run on base in the ninth inning Saturday before Desmond Jennings grounded into a double play as the Rays lost for only the second time in eight contests. Tampa Bay’s Steve Pearce is one of the hottest hitters in the league, going 12-for-18 with three doubles and three RBIs during a six-game streak.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (3-8, 5.44 ERA) vs. Rays LH Matt Moore (2-4, 5.56)

Keuchel owns just one victory in his last 10 starts, but completed at least six innings in all but one of those outings. The 28-year-old Oklahoma native yielded four runs on 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings at Texas on Tuesday – giving up two homers for the fourth time in his last seven starts. Logan Forsythe is 6-for-13 versus Keuchel, who is 0-3 with a 4.78 ERA in five career starts against the Rays.

Moore has won only once in his last nine starts after permitting five runs on seven hits over seven innings to take the loss Tuesday at Arizona. The 26-year-old has also struggled with the home run ball, giving up eight blasts in his last five starts and 14 in 69 2/3 innings overall. Jose Altuve is 1-for-5 with a homer against Moore, who is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two lifetime starts versus the Astros.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Altuve has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games (28-for-66 in that span) and recorded multiple hits in five of his past seven outings.

              2. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria homered for the sixth time in eight games on Saturday and boasts 16 RBIs in the last 13 contests.

              3. Astros INF Marwin Gonzalez is 11-for-25 during a six-game hitting streak and replaced SS Carlos Correa (ankle) the last two days.

              PREDICTION: Astros 5, Rays 2

WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio

Entering the weekend, the Oakland Athletics may have hoped a three-game series against the majors' worst pitching staff and a team winless in interleague play was just what they needed in order to stop their downward spiral. Instead, the host Cincinnati Reds have collected a couple of low-scoring victories on the strength of their rotation and bullpen, and look to complete a sweep of Oakland on Sunday.

Cincinnati was swept in four games by Cleveland and three by Seattle from May 16-22 to begin an 11-game losing streak and fall to 0-7 in interleague action. The Reds, who sport a major-league worst 5.49 ERA, have won nine of 14 since that slide and are getting quality pitching of late -- allowing a total of five runs over their last three games, including a pair of 2-1 victories in this series. The Athletics' offensive problems started well before traveling to Cincinnati, however, as they have scored two runs or fewer five times during their season-worst seven-game losing streak. Oakland has dropped nine in a row away from home and is in danger of its first winless road trip of at least eight games since finishing the 1995 season with nine straight defeats.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (2-6, 5.49 ERA) vs. Reds LH John Lamb (1-3, 4.74)

Graveman improved his unbeaten streak to three games but continued to struggle on the road in Houston on June 4, surrendering five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 frames en route to a no-decision. The Mississippi State product, who is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in six away outings, has been unable to complete the sixth inning in seven of his 11 starts. Graveman has never faced the Reds and a 7.03 ERA over his last eight turns, but he is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA in three starts against the National League.

Despite leaving with a 6-1 lead after working a season-high 7 1/3 innings, Lamb settled for a no-decision Tuesday against St. Louis when the bullpen imploded and was charged with three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. The 25-year-old stopped a three-start losing streak in his previous outing, yielding one run over a then-season high seven frames in a win over Colorado on June 1. Lamb was abysmal in his first two career interleague turns in May, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits in 10 innings.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Oakland's road losing streak is the team's longest since dropping 11 in a row away from home in 2005.

                2. Reds RF Jay Bruce has six homers and 16 RBIs over his last 16 games.

                3. Athletics LF Khris Davis was held out Saturday for precautionary reasons after getting hit by a pitch in the left arm Friday, but he is expected to return to the lineup for the finale.

                PREDICTION: Reds 6, Athletics 3

                  Preview: Cubs at Braves

GAME: Chicago Cubs (42-18) at Atlanta Braves (18-43)
                  DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 1:35 PM EST
                  WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

The venue has not mattered this season to the Chicago Cubs, who come into Sunday’s series finale at the Atlanta Braves looking to win for the 20th time in 30 road contests. One night after an uncharacteristic poor offensive showing in Friday’s 5-1 loss, the Cubs smashed four homers in an 8-2 rout, giving them a run differential of plus-151 through 60 games as baseball's best team improved to 42-18.

Right fielder Jason Heyward blasted a solo homer in the first inning Saturday, giving him three homers in his past eight games with a plate appearance, while Kris Bryant hit his 15th and Anthony Rizzo added his 14th. Bryant and Rizzo have combined to out-homer the Braves this season 29-25, and the power uprising dropped Atlanta to 7-24 at home. Rookie left fielder Mallex Smith went 1-for-3, and is batting .350 with three stolen bases in eight games this month. Atlanta has scored two runs or fewer 29 times in 61 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (7-3, 2.06 ERA) vs. Braves RH John Gant (0-0, 6.17)

As is the case with the rest of Chicago’s rotation, Lester has been outstanding in holding opponents to a .208 average and ranking fifth in the National League in WHIP (0.97). The 32-year-old has yet to walk a hitter in 17 innings across his first two June starts – both victories – striking out 19 with one run allowed on eight hits. Lester struck out 10 Braves in Chicago on April 29 in a no-decision (one run, seven hits in seven innings), and is 3-2 lifetime against Atlanta with a 2.52 ERA in six starts.

Gant has pitched better since a rough opening month to his debut season when he posted a 7.04 ERA in four April relief appearances, but in three relief stints since has given up two earned runs on six hits in four innings. The 23-year-old gave up two runs or fewer in three of four starts for Triple-A Gwinnett in May, allowing five runs in 6 2/3 innings in his final outing May 30 before being recalled to the majors. Gant has struggled against left-handers in his seven major-league appearances, giving up a .435 average in 23 at-bats, and Sunday represents his first big-league start.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Saturday’s defeat dropped Atlanta to an NL-worst 18-43, the franchise’s worst start since the 1935 Boston Braves were 19-42 after 61 games en route to a 115-loss campaign.

                  2. Rizzo’s homer Saturday gives the Chicago 1B 100 since the start of 2013, tied with Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton for most in the NL.

                  3. Braves CF Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to five games with a seventh-inning RBI triple.

                  PREDICTION: Cubs 6, Braves 2

                    Preview: Tigers at Yankees

Detroit Tigers (31-30) at New York Yankees (31-31)
                    DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 2:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York

Rookie Michael Fulmer has been the talk of the Detroit Tigers' pitching staff and that's quite the compliment considering the career accomplishments of Jordan Zimmermann and Justin Verlander. The 23-year-old Fulmer looks to improve upon his 22 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak Sunday when the Tigers play the rubber match of the three-game series versus the host New York Yankees.

Ian Kinsler drove in five runs in Saturday's 6-1 victory and has five multi-hit performances in his last eight contests. Miguel Cabrera is 0-for-8 in this series on the heels of a 10-game hitting streak, but remains one hit shy of becoming the seventh active player to reach 2,400 for his career. The two-time American League Most Valuable Player could reach the milestone if history is any indication as he is 4-for-7 versus Sunday starter Michael Pineda. Brett Gardner is 17-for-34 with 11 runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak for the Yankees, who are 5-1 heading into the finale of their homestand.

TV: 2:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Detroit, YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (6-1, 2.83 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Michael Pineda (3-6, 6.14)

Fulmer recorded his third consecutive scoreless performance Monday after scattering two hits for the second straight outing in an 11-0 rout of Toronto. The former New York Mets farmhand has surrendered only 11 hits and struck out 27 while winning his last four trips to the mound, dropping his ERA from 6.52 to 2.83 in that stretch. Fulmer has made himself at home on the road, posting a 4-1 mark heading into his first trip to Yankee Stadium.

Pineda allowed one run and struck out eight in a no-decision versus Detroit on June 2 before yielding three runs in seven innings of a 6-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels five nights later. The 27-year-old Dominican has struggled to keep the ball in the park as he has been taken deep nine times in his last nine outings and 10 times in six contests at Yankee Stadium. Kinsler is 1-for-9 versus Pineda.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. New York DH Alex Rodriguez is 2-for-15 with five strikeouts versus Detroit this season.

                    2. Tigers 1B Victor Martinez is 1-for-13 with eight strikeouts in his last four games.

                    3. The Yankees Old-Timer's game will be held prior to the series finale.

                    PREDICTION: Yankees 4, Tigers 2

                      Preview: Mets at Brewers

GAME: New York Mets (34-27) at Milwaukee Brewers (29-33)
                      DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 2:10 PM EST
                      WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The New York Mets will try to record only their second series victory in the last five when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers for the finale of a four-game set on Sunday. The Mets took the first two games of the series but suffered a 7-4 setback on Saturday to give the Brewers a shot at a split.

New York is looking for offense wherever it can get it and are finally receiving some good swings from leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson in the series. The veteran is 6-for-12 with two home runs, a triple and a double in the first three games to push his batting average from .203 to .219. The Brewers were making a run at a .500 record before dropping the first two to the Mets and sit at 29-33 overall after getting a pair of home runs from Ryan Braun in Saturday’s win. Braun went 0-for-13 with four strikeouts in the previous three games and had gone seven straight without recording multiple hits before breaking out with the two blasts.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (7-2, 2.39 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (4-3, 4.29)

Matz had a string of seven straight wins come to an end with a no decision on May 31 and suffered a rare loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The 25-year-old struck out eight but scattered two runs, eight hits and a pair of walks to raise the pitch count and force him out after five innings against the Pirates. Matz started against Milwaukee on May 20 and earned a win while yielding two runs and three hits in seven frames.

Davies is on a roll with wins in three straight and dominated in his last two turns. The 23-year-old allowed three hits and did not walk a batter in eight scoreless innings against St. Louis on June 1 and followed it up by holding the Oakland Athletics to two runs and two hits in seven frames on Tuesday. Davies went up against New York on May 21 and was reached for four runs in 5 1/3 innings while giving up home runs to Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Mets 2B Neil Walker left Saturday’s game with tightness in his lower back and is day-to-day.

                      2. Milwaukee 2B Scooter Gennett is 9-for-23 with five RBIs in the last five games.

                      3. New York C Travis d’Arnaud (shoulder) is back to catching in minor league rehab games.

                      PREDICTION: Mets 3, Brewers 2

GAME: Boston Red Sox (36-25) at Minnesota Twins (18-43)
                        DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 2:10 PM EST

Xander Bogaerts of the Boston Red Sox is putting his name atop the long list of great young shortstops in the majors with his hitting display of late. The American League batting average leader will try to put up a third straight four-hit performance and lead the Red Sox to a sweep when they visit the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Bogaerts went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in Friday’s 8-1 triumph in the series opener and followed it up with another 4-for-5 effort, which included a homer and three RBIs in Saturday’s 15-4 thrashing. The 23-year-old pushed his batting average up to .358 while 40-year-old teammate David Ortiz’s five hits in the series have him in second place in the AL at .346. The Twins staff is not putting up much resistance against any offense of late and surrendered a total of 33 runs while dropping the last three games. Minnesota is 3-9 over its last 12 games and the pitching staff is yielding an average of 6.6 runs in that span.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (7-2, 4.04 ERA) vs. Twins LH Pat Dean (1-2, 4.75)

Porcello did not factor in the decision in any of his last three starts despite going at least six innings in each. The New Jersey native tossed his only quality start in that span at San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six in six frames. Porcello has a long history against Minnesota from his time with the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, building up an 8-9 record with a 4.00 ERA in 25 starts.

Dean was knocked around for four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings against Miami on Tuesday but did not factor in the decision in a game the Twins went on to win 6-4. The Boston College product yielded eight runs and 16 hits in 9 1/3 innings over his last two outings. Dean is making his first career start against Boston and owns a 5.54 ERA in three home games – two starts.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Red Sox C Sandy Leon is 5-for-5 in two games since joining the team earlier in the week.

                        2. Minnesota 2B Brian Dozier is 9-for-19 in the last five games.

                        3. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-6 on Saturday to snap a 16-game hitting streak.

                          Preview: Royals at White Sox

GAME: Kansas City Royals (31-30) at Chicago White Sox (31-31)
                          DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois

Each of the Kansas City Royals' sets against the Chicago White Sox this season have followed a very different script only to end in a similar result - a series victory by the defending world champions. The Royals hope to improve to 7-2 against the White Sox this season and take their third three-game set in as many tries from their American League Central rival when the teams conclude their weekend series in Chicago on Sunday.

Kansas City allowed a total of five runs while taking two of three in Chicago from May 20-22, then swept the White Sox at home a week later by rallying from late deficits of four, six and two, respectively. The Royals, who rank last in the AL in home runs with 53, surprisingly blasted three off Chicago ace Chris Sale in a series-opening loss on Friday, only to add three more to their tally against another difficult left-hander in Jose Quintana in a 4-1 win Saturday to stop a nine-game road skid and eight-game slide overall. The White Sox failed in their third attempt to string together three wins in a row as a result of Saturday's setback and have dropped 21 of 29 since opening the season by winning 23 of their first 33. During that same dismal stretch, Chicago has lost 10 of its last 11 against divisional opponents after winning nine of their first 12 such contests.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Yordano Ventura (4-4, 5.32 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.41)

As he awaits the commissioner's decision on his appeal of a nine-game suspension for throwing at Baltimore's Manny Machado in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles, Ventura will attempt to snap a four-game winless streak. The 25-year-old Dominican yielded six runs on seven hits across 4 1/3 innings in the loss and set off a benches-clearing brawl when he drilled the two-time All-Star infielder in the back with a fastball. Ventura is 2-3 with a 4.79 ERA in eight career starts versus the White Sox, including 0-1, 6.23 in two turns this season.

Rodon, whose last start was skipped due to neck and arm discomfort, took the loss at Detroit on June 3 after permitting four runs - including a pair of homers - on seven hits and three walks in six frames. The 23-year-old Miami native has struggled mightily since posting a 1.38 ERA while splitting his first two turns, going 1-4 with a 5.19 ERA in nine outings since. Rodon will go head-to-head with Ventura for the third time in four outings Sunday and has dominated the Royals in his first two career starts against them, going 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. Each of the last eight home runs hit by the Royals have been solo shots.

                          2. Chicago 1B Jose Abreu has multiple hits in six of his last eight games - a stretch during which he has increased his batting average from .237 to .260.

                          3. Kansas City rookie LF Whit Merrifield went 0-for-4 Saturday, snapping his streak of reaching base in 18 straight starts to open his career - a club record.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (34-27) at Los Angeles Angels (27-35)
                            DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 3:35 PM EST

The Los Angeles Angels host the Cleveland Indians on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game series after halting a pair of streaks in dramatic fashion Saturday. Los Angeles (27-35) blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning before prevailing 4-3 to snap a five-game losing streak and a four-game slide to Cleveland (34-27), which leads the American League Central by three games over Kansas City and Detroit.

Angels first baseman Albert Pujols (.236) recorded a pair of hits Saturday as he makes another attempt to bust out of his season-long slump. The career .310 hitter, whose 572 home runs are one shy of tying Harmon Killebrew for 11th on the all-time list, raised his average to .244 with a 6-for-13 stretch earlier this month but fell back by going 1-for-16 in his previous four games prior to Saturday. Cleveland is 8-3 in its last 11 games and continues to get big hits from rookie center fielder Tyler Naquin (.322), whose two-out RBI single in the ninth inning off closer Huston Street made it 3-3. The Indians' Danny Salazar returns to the rotation after missing Wednesday's start because of shoulder fatigue and opposes David Huff, who keeps Tim Lincecum's seat in the rotation warm for one more start.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (6-3, 2.24 ERA) vs. Angels LH David Huff (0-1, 12.27)

Salazar allowed a run, three hits and five walks while striking out nine in a season-high eight innings of a 6-1 victory over Kansas City on June 3 in his last start. "We just thought his recovery wasn't as good as we would have liked,'' Cleveland manager Terry Francona told reporters about the 26-year-old Dominican, who threw a side session Thursday. Kole Calhoun is 3-for-6 with two home runs versus Salazar, who is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts against Los Angeles.

With Lincecum expected to join the rotation after Sunday's start with Triple-A Salt Lake, this could be Huff's final spot start. The 31-year-old Californian was called up from Salt Lake on Tuesday, when he yielded five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 6-3 loss at Yankee Stadium in his 2016 major league debut. Mike Napoli is 4-for-8 with two home runs, four RBIs and three walks versus Huff, who permitted three runs in 3 1/3 innings over four relief appearances versus Cleveland, his former team.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Naquin is 8-for-24 with all four of his career home runs and eight RBIs in June.

                            2. Street blew his first save of the season Saturday and remains tied with Jose Mesa for 17th on the all-time saves list with 321.

                            3. Napoli is batting .323 in 57 games against the Angels — his former team — after going 2-for-4 with a run scored Saturday.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (29-33) at Washington Nationals (38-24)
                              DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia

The Washington Nationals are flexing their offensive muscle and kicking sand in the face of the Philadelphia Phillies in the process. Washington will vie for its second consecutive sweep of Philadelphia on Sunday when the National League East rivals conclude their three-game series in the nation's capital.

First-place Washington breezed to an 8-0 triumph on Saturday afternoon and has outscored Philadelphia by a lopsided 33-12 margin en route to winning the last five encounters in the season series. Even light-hitting former Phillie Ben Revere is 10-for-24 with six runs scored in his last five contests, raising his batting average from .155 to .205. While the Nationals have scored at least eight runs in five of their last six outings and 49 overall during a 5-1 stretch, free-falling Philadelphia has yielded 25 runs during its last three games and is 5-16 in its last 21 contests. Cody Asche has provided a modest jolt since returning from his Grade 1 strain of his oblique, recording a hit in each of the last six games he's started.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies LH Adam Morgan (1-5, 6.70 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (5-4, 2.92)

Morgan suffered his fifth straight loss Monday after allowing three runs in six innings of a 6-4 setback to the Chicago Cubs. The 26-year-old was taken deep on one occasion and has permitted seven homers and 24 runs total during his skid. Included in that stretch was a disastrous outing versus Washington as Morgan yielded two blasts, six runs and a season-high nine hits in a 7-2 setback June 1.

Ross is hoping a pair of dominating performances versus Philadelphia will get him back on track after a disastrous outing against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. The 23-year-old allowed five runs and a season-high four walks in four innings of a no-decision versus the White Sox. Ross was significantly better against the Phillies, scattering three hits over 7 2/3 scoreless innings on April 15 before permitting the same number of hits in seven frames of a 5-1 victory May 31.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy is 8-for-24 with two homers, eight RBIs and seven runs scored in his last six games.

                              2. Philadelphia SS Freddy Galvis is 3-for-38 in his last 10 contests.

                              3. Nationals 2B Stephen Drew is 8-for-17 with three homers, seven RBIs and four runs scored in his last seven contests.

GAME: San Diego Padres (26-37) at Colorado Rockies (29-33)
                                DATE/TIME: Sunday, June 12 - 4:10 PM EST
                                WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado

The Colorado Rockies host the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game series and hope Carlos Gonzalez continues his roll at Coors Field. The right fielder belted a three-run homer - his 14th of the season - and added an RBI single during Saturday's 5-3 victory, and has gone deep in seven of his last 10 home games while batting .462 with seven home runs, 14 RBIs and 11 runs during that span.

Colorado (29-33) won five of its last seven games and second baseman DJ LeMahieu was a major contributor during that stretch by going 9-for-22 with a home run, three RBIs and seven runs scored during a six-game hitting streak. San Diego (26-37) lost five of its last six on the road as this series is sandwiched by an eight-game homestand in which it went 5-3 and another seven contests at Petco Park beginning Monday. Padres first baseman Wil Myers, who won Friday's game with a three-run homer in the ninth inning, is batting .436 with six home runs, 15 RBIs and 12 runs in 10 June contests after going 0-for-2 with a run scored and two walks Saturday to snap a six-game hitting streak. Christian Friedrich is thriving as a starter in his first year with San Diego after three struggling seasons with Colorado and faces his former team for the first time while opposing Eddie Butler, who is 1-1 with a 9.37 ERA in four games (three starts) at home this year.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Christian Friedrich (3-1, 2.57 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Eddie Butler (2-3, 5.48)

Friedrich won his last three starts - his first victories since 2012 - after allowing two runs and striking out a season-high seven in 6 2/3 innings of a 7-2 victory over Atlanta on Monday. “I’m grateful for every opportunity, every start,” the 28-year-old Illinois native told reporters. “It’s a blessing that I came over here. They put me back together when I was a little banged up and I couldn’t be happier starting again.” Friedrich was 5-16 with a 5.81 ERA in 100 games (19 starts) with Colorado.

Butler yielded three runs, four hits and four walks in six innings of a 4-3 loss at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday when he retired 17 of 18 batters after the first five reached. It was a big improvement for the 25-year-old Virginia native, who permitted eight runs in four innings of an 11-4 loss to Cincinnati on June 2. Butler retired the first nine batters before allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-3 loss in San Diego on May 3, falling to 0-2 with a 7.45 ERA in two starts versus the Padres.

                                WALK-OFFS

                                1. San Diego 3B Yangervis Solarte (.288), who is hitless in his last four games (0-for-10), left Saturday's contest with a bruised left thumb.

                                2. Rockies rookie RH Carlos Estevez recorded his first career save Saturday after Jason Motte struggled to begin the ninth and could work his way into the closer's role with Jake McGee (knee) on the disabled list.

                                3. Padres C Derek Norris went 2-for-3 on Saturday and is hitting .345 with a home run, six RBIs, 11 runs and eight doubles in 14 games at Coors Field.

                                PREDICTION: Padres 4, Rockies 2
