      Preview: Astros at Rays

      Current Conditions - St. Petersburg

      P/SUNNY 81 °F
      Wind: ESE 6
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: Houston Astros (29-33) at Tampa Bay Rays (27-31)
      DATE/TIME: Friday, June 10 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays battled their way out a slump at the end of a long road trip and hope to improve their play at home with 20 of the next 27 games at Tropicana Field. The Rays won five of their last six contests on the road and open a nine-game homestand Friday with the first of three against the up-and-down Houston Astros.

Tampa Bay had lost eight of nine outings to drop to a season-low eight games under .500 before taking advantage of struggling Minnesota and Arizona to post 30 runs in its last five wins. “The guys have kind of rallied around each other,” Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters. “You see the at-bats we’re having right now. We’re grinding through some at-bats. It’s been really fun to watch.” Evan Longoria has led the way for Tampa Bay with an 11-game hitting streak, registering six homers and 15 RBIs in that span, and will face Tampa native Lance McCullers as Houston attempts turn it around after a 1-3 series at Texas. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa suffered an ankle injury in Thursday’s 5-3 loss and is day-to-day.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers (3-1, 4.23 ERA) vs. Rays RH Matt Andriese (4-0, 2.52)

McCullers, who was named 2012 Gatorade National Player of the Year when he was at Jesuit High in Tampa, has won three straight starts in impressive fashion. The 22-year-old permitted six runs and 15 hits while striking out 26 over 17 innings in those outings. McCullers allowed four runs on four hits in six innings with 10 strikeouts to take the loss at Tampa Bay last year, but the current Rays lineup is 1-for-18 against him.

Andriese gave up three runs (two earned) over five innings – his shortest outing of the season -- to earn the victory last time out against Minnesota. The 26-year-old has limited five of six opponents to three or fewer runs in 2016 while allowing one home run in 39 1/3 innings. Jose Altuve is 1-for-1 versus Andriese, who took the loss after yielding one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief against Houston last season.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Altuve has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, going 25-for-60 with nine RBIs in that span to raise his average to .337.

      2. Tampa Bay OF Desmond Jennings went 5-for-11 with a pair of homers and three RBIs in the three-game series at Arizona to push his average to .194.

      3. Astros 3B Luis Valbuena has eight hits in 20 at-bats during a six-game hitting streak.

      PREDICTION: Astros 5, Rays 2

          Preview: Athletics at Reds

          Current Conditions - Cincinnati

          CLOUDY 69 °F
          Wind: CLM 0
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: Oakland Athletics (25-34) at Cincinnati Reds (22-38)
          DATE/TIME: Friday, June 10 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cincinnati Reds finally will receive a reinforcement for their injury-ravaged starting rotation when Anthony DeSclafani makes his season debut on Friday in the opener of a three-game interleague series against the visiting Oakland Athletics. The series will cap a nine-game homestand for Cincinnati, which is 5-3 in June.

The Reds' bid for a third consecutive series win was denied when they dropped the final two games to St. Louis, which improved to 18-4 in the last 22 series versus Cincinnati. Left fielder Adam Duvall has four homers and 11 RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak for the Reds. Oakland followed a five-game winning streak by losing the first five of its current eight-game road trip and allowing at least four runs in each defeat. The Athletics managed a combined eight hits in a two-game sweep by Milwaukee.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Sonny Gray (3-5, 5.77 ERA) vs. Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (2015: 9-13, 4.05)

Gray provided the Athletics with a reason for optimism going forward when he came off the 15-day disabled list to hold Houston to one run on five hits over five innings on Sunday. It was a much-needed boost of confidence for the 26-year-old Gray, who was 0-4 while surrendering 29 runs over his previous five outings. A 14-game winner in each of the previous two seasons, Gray was outstanding on the road in 2015, posting an 8-3 record and 2.82 ERA.

DeSclafani has been on the disabled list since the end of spring training with an oblique strain, but finally received the green light to rejoin the rotation after making three rehab starts. The 26-year-old DeSclafani put together a solid rookie season in 2015, but he stumbled at the end by giving up 17 runs while dropping his last three starts. He struggled at Great American Ball Park, logging a 5-9 record and unsightly 5.11 ERA in 16 starts.

          WALK-OFFS

          1. The Athletics placed LHP Rich Hill (groin) on the 15-day disabled list and traded OF Chris Coghlan to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

          2. Reds CF Billy Hamilton missed Thursday's game after being placed in MLB's concussion protocol.

          3. Oakland selected LHP A.J. Puk from the University of Florida with the sixth pick in the draft.

          PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Reds 2

              Preview: Cubs at Braves

              Current Conditions - Atlanta

              SUNNY 76 °F
              Wind: CLM 0
              5-Day Forecast
GAME: Chicago Cubs (41-17) at Atlanta Braves (17-42)
              DATE/TIME: Friday, June 10 - 7:35 PM EST
              WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
              LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs expected to get great pitching at the front of their starting rotation, but the work of their back-end starters is a big reason they bring baseball’s best record into the opener of a three-game series Friday at the major league-worst Atlanta Braves. The Cubs come in having won 17 games since May 10 – matching Atlanta’s victory total for the season – and Jason Hammel starts the opener for Chicago looking to extend the team's mound dominance.

Chicago starters have posted a 1.34 ERA in the past 13 games, while the Cubs have scored four runs or more 39 times in 58 games – including Wednesday’s 8-1 rout at Philadelphia. Javier Baez went 4-for-4 in the victory and has driven in nine runs in his past seven games. Atlanta snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Padres 4-2 in the finale of a West Coast road trip Wednesday and the top of the Braves’ lineup is showing signs of life. Center fielder Ender Inciarte fell a homer short of the cycle Wednesday and finished 6-for-13 with four runs scored in the San Diego series, while infielder Chase d’Arnaud is 9-for-23 with three RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jason Hammel (7-1, 2.14 ERA) vs. Braves RH Bud Norris (1-7, 5.28)

The 33-year-old Hammel is enjoying the best season of his 11-year career, holding right-handed hitters to a .167 average and going 4-1 in six away starts. He held the Arizona Diamondbacks to two runs on one hit with six strikeouts in seven innings Saturday in a 5-3 victory, and has allowed three earned runs in his past 16 1/3 frames. Hammel has struggled against the Braves in nine career starts, going 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA.

Norris lost his spot in the Braves’ rotation after posting an 8.74 ERA in five April starts, but is back with Mike Foltynewicz disabled due to bone spurs in his right elbow. The 31-year-old responded with his best start of the season Saturday at Los Angeles, holding the Dodgers to one run on three hits in five innings despite taking the loss in a 4-0 decision. Norris, who went 0-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 12 relief appearances, is 4-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career appearances (10 starts) against the Cubs.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Chicago is 28-9 in its past 37 road games (dating back to Sept. 15, 2015), outscoring opponents 211-98 during that stretch.

              2. Atlanta traded INF/OF Kelly Johnson to the New York Mets on Wednesday, placed RHP Williams Perez on the disabled list and could recall SS Erick Aybar from his rehab stint with Triple-A Gwinnett this weekend.

              3. Highly-touted Chicago OF Albert Almora Jr., a first-round pick in the 2012 draft, went 1-for-4 with his first major-league hit and RBI on Wednesday.

              PREDICTION: Cubs 7, Braves 2

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: New York Mets (33-26) at Milwaukee Brewers (28-32)
                  DATE/TIME: Friday, June 10 - 8:10 PM EST
                  WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The New York Mets attempt to continue their dominance in the season series when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday for the second contest of their four-game set. After recording a three-game sweep of the Brewers at home from May 20-22, New York recorded a 5-2 triumph in Thursday's opener behind a strong seven-inning performance by Bartolo Colon.

Despite sporting a .208 average, Curtis Granderson has belted 11 home runs this year and shares the franchise record for leadoff blasts with Jose Reyes after hitting his 16th with the club on Thursday. Milwaukee had its three-game winning streak at home snapped with the series-opening setback and fell to 2-1 on its six-game string at Miller Park. Scooter Gennett is wielding a hot bat, as he tied a career high with four hits on Thursday and has gone 9-for-18 over his last four games. Hernan Perez also has been productive of late, hitting safely in nine of his last 10 contests while not going more than one game without a hit since a four-game drought from May 11-14.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (4-8, 4.95 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Junior Guerra (3-1, 3.61)

Harvey appears to have righted the ship as he has allowed just one run over 14 innings in his last two starts after surrendering 19 over 13 1/3 frames in his previous three outings. The 27-year-old native of Connecticut suffered a hard-luck loss at Miami on Sunday as he yielded one run and four hits in seven innings. Harvey, who never has faced Milwaukee, is 2-5 with a 5.18 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Guerra's winless stretch reached three starts Saturday as he did not figure in the decision at Philadelphia after giving up three runs and six hits in six innings. The 31-year-old Venezuelan has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last five outings and has worked at least six frames in six of his seven turns this year. Guerra, who will be facing New York for the first time, is 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA in four starts at home.

Steven Wright is making life on the road look like a carefree walk in the park. With three consecutive complete-game gems away from home in his rear-view mirror, Wright attempts to continue his torrid stretch on Friday as the Boston Red Sox open a three-game series against the host Minnesota Twins.

While Wright has made himself at home on the road, David Ortiz called Minnesota "home" when he made his major-league debut with the club in 1997 and spent six seasons in a Twins uniform. The retiring slugger will be honored by Minnesota prior to Friday's contest as the Red Sox attempt to prevent their sixth loss in eight games. Minnesota was denied in its bid for its third sweep of the season on Thursday as it fell for the seventh time in 10 contests with a 10-3 setback against Miami. Eduardo Nunez has been scorching of late, recording 10 multi-hit performances in his last 14 games overall while batting .333 (35-for-105) in his career versus Boston.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Steven Wright (6-4, 2.29 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (2-4, 4.79)

Wright extended his overall winning streak to three contests on Saturday after allowing three runs in five innings of a 6-4 triumph over Toronto. The 31-year-old knuckleballer issued five walks for the second straight outing but has kept the ball in the park in each contest during his winning streak. Wright yielded four runs in six frames of a no-decision versus the Twins in his lone encounter, but Kurt Suzuki went 3-for-3 against the hurler.

Duffey's fortunes have changed in a hurry as the 25-year-old has allowed 20 earned runs and five homers in his last four starts after permitting just five earned runs and two blasts in his previous four. Duffey was taken deep three times on Sunday while yielding four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision versus Tampa Bay. He did manage to record eight strikeouts, which is one shy of his season high.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Twins 2B Brian Dozier is 11-for-33 (.333) with eight RBIs in his last eight contests.

                      2. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia carries a 15-game hitting streak into Minnesota, against which he is batting .354 (84-for-237) in his career.

                      3. The American League Central cellar-dwelling Twins are just 2-11 versus AL East representatives.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, Twins 2

A pair of American League Central rivals mired in ugly tailspins will try to get well at the expense of each other when the Kansas City Royals continue a disastrous 10-game trek on Friday against the Chicago White Sox. Kansas City has lost all seven games on its road trip thus far while Chicago is 7-20 in its last 27 after halting a five-game skid on Thursday.

The Royals have been outscored 42-8 during their slide and set a dubious franchise record by scoring fewer than two runs in each of the last six defeats. "It's very frustrating because I know we're all capable of playing a lot better," center fielder Lorenzo Cain said. "We're all struggling. We have to find a way to get it going." Facing the White Sox provides a glimmer of optimism for Kansas City, which has won five of six meetings between the teams this season. Chicago ace Chris Sale, who won his first nine starts of the season, opposes Ian Kennedy in the series opener.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-4, 3.44 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Chris Sale (9-2, 2.54)

Kennedy had a rare clunker in his last outing at Cleveland on Saturday, surrendering a pair of homers while giving up five runs and eight hits over six innings to fall to 0-2 in his last five starts. He has yielded two runs or fewer in eight of his 11 turns and at least five in the other three. Kennedy continues to be victimized by the long ball, giving up seven homers in his last five starts, and is 3-3 with a 4.65 ERA away from home.

Sale fell to 0-2 over his last three starts after giving up four runs and nine hits while registering a season-low two strikeouts in a 7-4 setback at Detroit on Saturday. The 6-6 southpaw did not factor in the decision at Kansas City in his previous turn despite limiting the Royals to two runs over seven innings. Alcides Escobar (.375) and Cain (.348) each have had success against Sale, who is 7-9 with a 2.82 ERA in 27 career appearances versus the Royals.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. Chicago RHP Mat Latos, who has struggled since starting the season 4-0 with a 0.74 ERA, was designated for assignment on Thursday.

                          2. Royals RHP Yordano Ventura is appealing a nine-game suspension levied by MLB for intentionally throwing at and fighting with Baltimore SS Manny Machado.

                          3. The White Sox signed 1B Justin Morneau, a former AL MVP who is rehabbing from elbow surgery and is expected to be available in mid-July.

Jon Gray dominated San Diego batters in his last outing and the right-hander aims to do so again when the Colorado Rockies open a three-game series against the visiting Padres on Friday. Gray struck out a career-best 12 and gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings as the Rockies rolled to a 10-3 victory last Sunday in San Diego.

The 24-year-old Gray has struck out 23 batters in 13 innings against the Padres this season while splitting two decisions. Gray's superb performance began a stretch in which Colorado has won four of five games, including an 11-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu homered, had three RBIs and scored three runs against the Pirates and is 6-for-14 with three walks over the last four games. San Diego first baseman Wil Myers has multiple hits in five straight games and seven of the last eight and is 19-for-42 with five homers, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored in the past 10 contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Andrew Cashner (3-5, 4.78 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (4-2, 5.33)

Cashner ended a three-start skid by beating Colorado last Saturday when he gave up three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He is 2-0 against the Rockies this season to improve his career mark to 3-3 and lower the ERA to 5.75 in 13 career appearances (eight starts). Cashner is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in four road starts this season.

Gray has won three straight starts and four of the last five after failing to win any of his first 13 career outings. He allowed just five hits in each of the four victories but was torched in his loss during this stretch, giving up nine runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings against St. Louis on May 19. Gray is 2-1 with a 7.44 ERA in nine career starts at Coors Field.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              2. San Diego completed a 5-3 homestand on Wednesday but is a shaky 10-18 on the road.

                              3. Colorado selected RHP Riley Pint (Overland Park, Kan.) with the fourth overall pick of Thursday's draft while San Diego's first-round selection was Stanford RHP Cal Quantrill (the son of former major-league Paul Quantrill) with the eighth overall choice.
