    Re: MLB Betting Info. 6/10

Preview: Marlins (31-29) at Diamondbacks (26-36)

    Game: 1
    Venue: Chase Field
    Date: June 10, 2016 9:40 PM EDT

PHOENIX -- Only Atlanta has fewer home victories than the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, and it is not hard to figure.

The pitching staff that the D-backs sought to overhaul in the offseason has had a rocky time at Chase Field so far, notwithstanding the fact that Chase stands as one of the most difficult pitchers' parks in the majors because of its altitude, hard ground and thin air.

Arizona will bring a 5.55 home ERA into a three-game series against Miami that begins on Friday, when left-hander Patrick Corbin is to oppose Marlins left-hander Justin Nicolino. The Marlins have won five straight in the series.

About the only salvation the D-backs have had at home recently has come from free agent Zack Greinke, who has won four of his last five home starts but is not scheduled to face the Marlins this weekend.

The D-backs (26-36) are 10-22 at Chase Field and have lost 18 of 27 overall since closing to within one game of .500 on May 10. Only Atlanta (6-23) is having more trouble at home.

Arizona three-time All Star Paul Goldschmidt has begun to heat up recently, a good sign for an offense that can use all the production it can get at home.

Goldschmidt is slashing .367/.483/.653 with five doubles, three homers, 11 RBIs and two stolen bases over the last 14 games, moving his season batting average to .270.

While Greinke (8-3) and Goldschmidt are rolling, Arizona manager Chip Hale knows it will take more.

"We need to keep the line moving," Hale said. "It's important. They all feed off each other. You can't rely on just 'Goldy' hitting and Greinke pitching."

Miami has one of the best road records in the NL into the series, which brings former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly to Arizona for the first and only time this season.

The Marlins (31-29) had a season-high 18 hits in a victory at Minnesota on Wednesday and are 17-13 on the road, putting an exclamation point on that with a seven-game winning streak in late April that included a four-game sweep at Dodger Stadium in Mattingly's return to L.A.

Only the Cubs, San Francisco and Washington have appreciably better road records than the Marlins this season, and Miami has done a lot of its work without big bopper Giancarlo Stanton playing a prominent role.

In the last 24 games, All-Star Stanton is slashing .114/.202/.205 with two homers and five RBIs while striking out 43 times. He struck out five times in the Marlins' 10-2 at Minnesota on Wednesday night is hitting .197 this season.

All the same, Stanton is Miami's leading vote-getter on the All-Star ballot. Mattingly on Wednesday said he would favor center fielder Marcell Ozuna if he had to pick a Marlins all-star. Ozuna is hitting .324 with 11 doubles, 11 homers and 34 RBIs.

Ichiro Suzuki and Ozuna had seven hits in the three-game series at Minnesota and former Arizona third baseman Martin Prado had six. Ozuna (.324), Christian Yelich (.320) and Prado (.311) are in the top 10 in the NL in hitting.

Suzuki. 42, has 4,251 career in 24-plus professional seasons, five short of Pete Rose's major league record. Suzuki has 2,973 hits in 15-plus seasons in the U.S. after getting 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix in Japan. Rose played 24 seasons

Preview: Indians (33-26) at Angels (26-34)

      Game: 1
      Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
      Date: June 10, 2016 10:05 PM EDT

Right-hander Corey Kluber looks to continue the momentum from his last start when he takes the mound as Cleveland Indians open a three-game series Friday against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif.

His opponent, Angels left-hander Hector Santiago, is aiming to end a cold spell.

Kluber (5-6, 3.84 ERA) blanked the Kansas City Royals for six innings Sunday, scattering just two hits and two walks while striking out six. He exited game after a three-hour, 10-minute rain delay.

"I just tried to work ahead in the count because it puts things in your favor and keeps the pressure on the hitter," said Kluber, who threw 55 of his 82 pitches for strikes in Cleveland's 7-0 win.

Indians manager Terry Francona said, "He commanded extremely well. He used both sides probably as good as he has and just really pitched. His command was so good."

In his past four starts, Kluber, the 2014 American League Cy Young winner, is 3-1 with a 2.96 ERA.

Kluber is 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA in three career starts against the Angels, 0-2 with a 6.07 mark in two starts at Angel Stadium.

After winning six in a row, the AL Central-leading Indians (33-26) dropped two straight to the Mariners before taking the series finale Thursday night. They arrive in Anaheim sitting three games ahead of second-place Kansas City thanks, in part, to a two-run, eighth-inning home run by Tyler Naquin that propelled them to a 5-3 victory at Seattle on Thursday.

"What a huge lift for us," Francona said of Naquin, a left-handed hitter who has four homers in his past seven games.

The Angels have lost six of their past eight games and are coming getting swept in a four-game series by the Yankees in New York.

They will send lefty Hector Santiago to the mound to get things started. He was roughed up his last time out, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks over four innings Sunday at Pittsburgh.

Over his past four stats, Santiago was charged with 19 runs (18 earned) on 17 hits and 11 walks in 15 2/3 innings, a (10.32 ERA).

"He really struggled with everything," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times after Santiago's Sunday outing.

In 11 career appearances (six starts) against the Indians, Santiago is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA.

The Angels (26-34) begin the day in fourth place in the AL West, a half-game ahead of the last-place Oakland Athletics.

"It definitely was a tough trip," center fielder Mike Trout said of the Angels' 2-5 trek to Pittsburgh and the Bronx. "Obviously, it didn't go the way we planned, but we got to turn the page and try to win the game tomorrow."

Trout insisted that, despite the losing, and the overall difficult season, optimism remains high in the Angels' clubhouse.

"It's obviously tough," Trout said. "None of us like losing, but it's still early in the season and we'll try to turn this thing around. ... The chemistry's there. We're all staying positive. We can't hang our heads now. It's too early in the season."

Preview: Rangers (37-23) at Mariners (33-27)

        Game: 1
        Venue: Safeco Field
        Date: June 10, 2016 10:10 PM EDT

SEATTLE -- The Texas Rangers left little doubt about which team is the American League West favorite last weekend when they swept the Seattle Mariners to take a three-game lead atop the division.

Beginning Friday, the Mariners get another chance to prove that they are a legitimate contender for the AL West crown.

Second-place Seattle (33-27) is now a full four games behind Texas in the division standings, thanks in large part to last weekend's sweep. For obvious reasons, the Mariners hope to put up a better fight this time around.

After dropping the series finale to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night, the Seattle players were already looking forward.

"I'm one to put this game away and be ready for a fun weekend," Mariners star Robinson Cano said late Thursday night.

The Rangers are riding a wave of success as they head into this weekend's series at Safeco Field, but manager Jeff Banister isn't guaranteeing any carryover.

"Every wave hits a beach," he told The Dallas Morning News after his team's series-clinching win over the Houston Astros on Thursday afternoon. "But there's another one right after it."

The Rangers (37-23) have plenty of reasons to be confident heading into the series after dumping the Mariners by an aggregate 20-9 score one week earlier.

Texas played most of that series without second baseman Rougned Odor, who is back from a seven-game suspension, but now there is concern about whether third baseman Adrian Beltre will be available. A hamstring injury sidelined Beltre on Thursday, and he is day-to-day heading into the weekend.

The Mariners might get a boost to their lineup if they activate center fielder Leonys Martin on Friday. Martin, a former Ranger who is hitting .262 this season, is eligible to come off the disabled list after battling a sore hamstring.

Martin and 22-year-old shortstop Ketel Marte were coming into their own offensively before landing on the disabled list late last month. Neither played in the Texas series last weekend, but the Mariners could have both players back for the rematch.

Seattle's pitching could be an even bigger story. The Mariners' starters got hit hard in the first two games of the series last week before Hisashi Iwakuma came through with a solid outing in last Sunday's finale. Iwakuma (4-5) is scheduled to be back on the mound Friday after allowing just one earned run on four hits in seven innings against the Rangers his last time out.

Seattle left-handers James Paxton and Wade Miley, who are scheduled to start Saturday and Sunday, respectively, bounced back from rough outings to pitch well in the Cleveland series.

Texas will also start two left-handers in the series, with Derek Holland scheduled to go Friday and Cole Hamels on Sunday. Right-hander Colby Lewis is scheduled to start Saturday.

Iwakuma owns strong career numbers against Texas, 8-5 with a 3.35 ERA in 17 games (16 starts).

Holland has been equally sharp against Seattle, posting an identical 3.35 ERA to go with a 12-4 mark in 23 games (19 starts). He beat the Mariners last Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings.

"Obviously, establishing the fastball was a huge thing and kind of working off that, changing eye levels and mixing in and out was a big thing," Holland said after the victory. "I've got to let my defense do their work, and I felt like I did a good job of that by attacking the strike zone."

Preview: Dodgers (32-29) at Giants (36-25)

          Game: 1
          Venue: AT&T Park
          Date: June 10, 2016 10:15 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO -- Clayton Kershaw slayed Madison Bumgarner earlier this season.

          Twice, in fact.

Now he's faced with what could be an even greater challenge: Johnny Cueto.

The San Francisco Giants will go with their No. 2 starter, who has pitched more like a No. 1 this season, when they throw Cueto up against Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series of the top two teams in the National League West on Friday night.

Kershaw, the clear-cut ace of the L.A. staff, has gone up against the Giants twice already this season, and the Dodgers have prevailed both times.

In games pitched by Bumgarner, no less.

But on both occasions -- April 9 and 15 -- the Giants extracted a measure of revenge the next day when Cueto pitched victories in games started by the Dodgers' No. 2, Scott Kazmir.

Something will have to give Friday night, when Kershaw (1-0 against the Giants this season) and Cueto (2-0 vs. the Dodgers) go head-to-head for the first time since June 14, 2011, when Cueto was pitching for the Cincinnati Reds.

"I don't worry about who the other team is pitching," Cueto told reporters after his most recent home start, a 1-0 pitchers' duel with the San Diego Padres' Drew Pomeranz. "I just want to pitch my best. That's my job."

According to the way the schedule appeared to be playing out a week ago, it was supposed to be Kershaw's job to pitch at home against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.

But new manager Dave Roberts used the excuse of right-hander Kenta Maeda's sore pitching hand to push Kershaw back a game, landing him in Friday's important slot following Thursday's day off.

"Most of it was Kenta," Roberts told reporters earlier this week, basically admitting that Kershaw facing the Giants had factored into the decision.

L.A. catcher A.J. Ellis noted the last series between the Giants (36-25) and Dodgers (32-29) until August is important no matter who's pitching.

"It's all about accumulating wins," he said before Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Rockies in the game Kershaw was supposed to pitch. "I don't think it matters if Clayton pitches against the Giants or the last day against the Rockies. Right now, it's a race to 90 to 95 wins, and you want to accumulate them as fast as you can."

The Giants are 4-3 against the Dodgers this season, having won three of four in the clubs' only previous series in San Francisco.

On paper, a Kershaw-Cueto matchup is about as good as it gets.

Kershaw (8-1) has been almost unhittable on the road in his last five starts, allowing just one run and 15 hits in 43 innings, striking out 49.

He's 17-7 in his career against the Giants, including 9-3 with a 1.23 ERA in 15 starts at AT&T Park.

The Dodgers are 11-1 in his 12 starts this season.

Cueto (9-1), meanwhile, has not allowed a run at home in his last three starts, covering a total of 26 1/3 innings. Like with the Dodgers and Kershaw, the Giants are 11-1 when Cueto has been the starting pitcher.

The Giants expect to get star catcher Buster Posey back for the series opener. The former National League Most Valuable Player hasn't played since last Saturday because of a nerve irritation in his right thumb.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday, June 10, 2016, Opening Line Report
            by Alan Matthews

Two aces left their games early on Wednesday with issues in their pitching arms, and both teams will be on pins and needles Thursday awaiting test results on said arms. The Rangers should win the AL West with a healthy Yu Darvish, but in just his third start back from Tommy John surgery he had to leave Wednesday's game with tightness in his pitching shoulder. Darvish thinks it's nothing and that he will make his next start, but he's obviously not a doctor. Potentially more worrisome was Phillies young right-hander Vince Velasquez leaving after just two pitches Wednesday -- fastballs that didn't top 87 mph when he averages 94 -- against the Cubs with right biceps soreness. Velasquez had Tommy John surgery back in 2010. Sometimes right biceps soreness can be a precursor to a major issue. Velasquez is a huge part of Philly's future, so I doubt we see him for a while as the team will be extra cautious even if it's minor.

            Phillies at Nationals (-270, 8)

This will already be the 10th meeting of the season between the teams, with Washington leading 5-4. Each club swept the other on its home field once already. The Nationals hadn't lost a start by Stephen Strasburg (9-0, 2.85) since last Sept. 9 but did on Saturday in Cincinnati, with him leaving after 5.1 inning due to a calf strain/cramps and allowing three runs in 5.1 innings. Strasburg said he was simply dehydrated and was fine the next day, so he should be good to go here. Somehow, he hasn't faced Philly this year. He was 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA in five starts against them in 2015. Maikel Franco is 3-for-7 off him with a homer. Philly's Jeremy Hellickson (4-3, 3.80) is a potential trade chip if he keeps pitching well and the Phillies keep fading. Hellickson is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA this year in three starts vs. Washington. Daniel Murphy is 3-for-9 off him with two doubles and a homer. Bryce Harper is 3-for-8 with five walks.

Key trends: The Phillies are 1-4 in Hellickson's past five series openers. The Nats are 7-1 in their past eight at home vs. teams with a losing road record. The "over/under" has gone under in five of the past seven meetings.

            Early lean: Nationals and under.

            A's at Reds (+100, 9.5)

Oakland will lose the designated hitter for this interleague series. A's ace Sonny Gray (3-5, 5.77) returned from a disabled list stint (back) on Sunday in Houston and had one of his better starts of the year, allowing a run and five hits in five innings. Gray hasn't won since April 22. He will bat for the first time this season. The Reds think young right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is a key piece of their future and he will make his season debut in this game. He was to be the team's opening day starter, but he strained an oblique during spring training and then had a setback last month. DeSclafani pitched a bullpen session on Tuesday and came out in the clear. I'm assuming he will be on a pitch limit for a while. He was 9-13 with a 4.05 ERA last year. A few A's have seen him. Chris Coghlan is 3-for-9 with two doubles. Coco Crisp is 0-for-2.

Key trends: The A's are 2-7 in Gray's past nine on the road. The Reds are 0-6 in DeSclafani's past six vs. teams with a losing record. The over is 7-1 in Gray's past eight.

            Early lean: A's and over.

            Mets at Brewers (+120, 8.5)

If the Mets could just get all their position players healthy, they might be scary again because Matt Harvey is finally pitching like he was expected to and has in the past. Harvey (4-8, 4.95) has gone a season-high seven innings in his last two starts and allowed just one combined run and six hits. He actually lost Sunday in Miami, however. This will be Harvey's first career start against Milwaukee. The Brew Crew go with Junior Guerra (3-1, 3.61), who has been a pleasant surprise. The 31-year-old, in his first big-league season, took a no-decision against the Phillies in his last start, allowing three runs in six innings. Guerra has made seven starts and four have been quality. He hasn't faced the Mets.

Key trends: The Mets are 2-6 in Harvey's past eight on the road. The under is 6-2 in his past eight overall.

            Early lean: Mets and under.

            Rangers at Mariners (-140, 8.5)

Texas might have another issue with third baseman Adrian Beltre as he also left Wednesday's game but with a hamstring injury. So monitor his status. Seattle made what has proven a very good trade this offseason in acquiring outfielder Leonys Martin from Texas, and the Mariners believe they will be able to activate Martin off the DL on Friday. The team definitely has missed Martin, who was hitting .262 with nine homers, 20 RBIs and eight steals as Seattle was 10 over .500 after winning the last game he played on May 25 before going on the DL with a hamstring injury. Martin had a hit in nine straight games. He will face off against Rangers lefty starter Derek Holland (5-4, 4.53). He is working on a string of four straight quality starts, not allowing more than two earned runs in any. Holland is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in two starts this year against Seattle. Martin is 0-for-3 against his former teammate. Robinson Cano hits .372 off him with two homers and nine RBIs in 43 at-bats. Nelson Cruz is 4-for-14 with two homers and four RBIs against Holland. The M's go with Hisashi Iwakuma (4-5, 4.13). He is 0-2 this year vs. Texas in three starts despite a solid 3.00 ERA. Beltre has three homers off him and hits .289 in 45 at-bats. Rougned Odor is 7-for-18 with a homer.

Key trends: The Rangers are 5-1 in Holland's past six in Seattle. The Mariners are 5-2 in Iwakuma's past seven at home vs. Texas. The under is 5-2-2 in Holland's past nine against the M's.

            Early lean: Rangers and under.

            Dodgers at Giants (+155, 6)

Clearly the pitching matchup of the night between these blood rivals. The Dodgers go with lefty and Cy Young betting favorite Clayton Kershaw (8-1, 1.46). He was typically good on Saturday against Atlanta, shutting out the Braves on three hits over a season-low six innings. He was at 96 pitches through those six, so there was really no reason to bring Kershaw out for the seventh. Kershaw wasn't totally sharp as he allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in four of his six innings, once by hitting the opposing pitcher for the first time in his career. Kershaw is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA in two starts vs. the Giants in 2016. Brandon Belt continues to flail against him, going 3-for-43 with 23 strikeouts. I am confident I could do that. Buster Posey has two homers and seven RBIs off Kershaw but also 16 strikeouts in 82 at-bats. The Giants go with Johnny Cueto (9-1, 2.16) on six days of rest. He pitched last Friday in St. Louis, allowing one unearned run on four hits over six innings. Cueto's Giants debut was April 16 at the Dodgers as he allowed one run over 7.1 innings.

Key trends: The Dodgers are 4-0 in Kershaw's past four in Frisco. The under has hit in 10 of his past 12 there. The under is 5-1 in Cueto's past six.

Early lean: I can't pick Kershaw in every game, right? Even the best lose once in a while. I'll go Giants here and certainly under.

              'Braves a mess'

The Atlanta Braves (17-42) are a complete mess no matter where, when they play. The club is 6-23 at home this season, 11-19 on the road, 6-13 in day games, 11-29 under the light's.

Next up, a weekend date with league leading Cubbies who win anywhere, anytime. Doubt you want to take a flyer on Atlanta as they'll be facing Hammel, Arrieta and Lester who own a combined 28-7 team start record on the year and combined 6-0 TSR vs Braves since joining Cubs.

                'Runs at a Premium'

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants June 10, 10:15 EST

The eyes of most baseball fans, as well as those focused on baseball betting, will be on the late Friday night matchup between host San Francisco Giants and visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in what should be a pitchers duel.

The duel in question will be between Johnny Cueto bringing a 9-1 record, 2.16 ERA, 11-1 teams start record (4-8 O/U) to the hill. Clayton Kershaw carries an 8-1 mark, 1.46 ERA and like Cueto an 11-1 team start record on the year (3-8-1 O/U).

In his last outing, Cueto handcuffed Cardinals over six innings surrendering 4 hit, 1 run picking up a 5th straight victory and eight consecutive Giant win when he touches toe to rubber (2-6 O/U). Cueto has faced Dodgers twice this season picking up a 'W' in both contest (1-1 O/U). Meanwhile, Kershaw is off a 6th straight win in seven starts (0-6-1 O/U) and has won twice vs Giants this campaign (1-1 O/U).

The presence of tonight’s starters oddsmakers have noted the possibility of a low-scoring affair setting the total at 5.5 to 6.0 depending on locale. While some may be scared off at the low totals number, that usually is a sign to jump in as teams are 3-6 O/U this season when the run total is 6.0 or lower.

Cueto showing he can keep the score low allowing 2 or fewer runs in 6 straight starts has resulted in 5 'Under', 1 'Over'. Kershaw obviously able to limit runs has surrendered 2 or fewer in seven straight starts cashing 6 'Under', 1 'Push'. Additionally, in 15 Kershaw starts in San Francisco the 'Under' has cashed 12 times, with 2 'Over', 1 'Push'.

Carlos Beltran has been on a tear since mid-May and is showing no signs of slowing down. The 39-year-old looks to continue his torrid hitting display on Friday as the New York Yankees open a three-game series versus the visiting Detroit Tigers.

Beltran launched three homers and drove in 10 runs to help the Yankees (30-30) clinch a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels and move back to .500 for the first time since May 24. The veteran also has enjoyed success versus Detroit this season, going 3-for-9 with a home run and is 3-for-5 in his career against Friday starter Mike Pelfrey. The Tigers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Yankees in a makeup game on June 2 but won five of their next six heading into the opener of a 10-game road trip. Miguel Cabrera carries a 10-game hitting streak into Friday's tilt versus CC Sabathia, against whom he is 10-for-34 (.294) in his career with two homers and 12 RBIs.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (1-5, 4.76 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (3-4, 2.58)

Signed to a two-year, $16 million deal in the offseason, Pelfrey collected his first win with his new team on Saturday after allowing two runs in six innings of a 7-4 triumph over the Chicago White Sox. The 32-year-old began his stint with his new team with a disheartening performance at Yankee Stadium on April 9, surrendering six runs in 3 2/3 innings of an 8-4 setback. Pelfrey was taken deep on one occasion in that contest, but has kept the ball in the park in his last two outings after surrendering seven homers in his previous four.

Sabathia struggled with his control on Sunday as the 35-year-old yielded six walks in five-plus innings of a no-decision versus Baltimore. Sabathia skated by with a no-decision, however, and is 1-2 with a 1.13 ERA in four starts since returning from the disabled list. Sabathia got the victory at Pelfrey's expense on April 9 despite issuing four free passes and three runs in six innings.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Detroit 3B Nick Castellanos recorded a pair of multi-hit performances in his team's most-recent series versus Toronto and had a four-hit effort against New York on April 8.

                    2. Yankees OF Brett Gardner has recorded back-to-back three-hit performances and is 15-for-27 with nine runs scored in the last seven games.

                    3. Tigers CF Cameron Maybin has been batting soreness in his left wrist since training camp, but is expected to return to the starting lineup on Friday.

                    PREDICTION: Tigers 4, Yankees 2

Washington Nationals fireballer Stephen Strasburg has run roughshod over the competition for much of this season - and against the Philadelphia Phillies throughout the majority of his career. The 27-year-old fireballer will look to extend both impressive runs on Friday, when the National League East rivals open a three-game series in the nation's capital.

Strasburg has won 12 straight decisions dating to last season and sports a scintillating 7-2 career record versus the Phillies while holding them to a .192 batting average. Strasburg, however, has yet to face Philadelphia in any of the first three series of 2016, with the Nationals outscoring their foe by a 16-6 margin to sweep the last set from May 30-June 1. While Washington's bid to bring out the broom against the Chicago White Sox fell short with a 3-1 setback on Thursday, the free-falling Phillies have dropped 14 of their last 19 to fall seven games behind the first-place Nationals. Odubel Herrera is 7-for-14 (.500) with two runs scored during his four-game hitting streak and has hit safely in eight of the nine meetings with Washington this season.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NBC-10 (Philadelphia), MASN, WUSA 9 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jeremy Hellickson (4-3, 3.80 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (9-0, 2.85)

Hellickson has authored a pair of gems against Washington after struggling in his initial two starts versus the club. The 29-year-old scattered two hits over seven innings in a 3-0 win on April 27 before yielding just one run and three hits in the same stretch of a no-decision on May 30. Hellickson enters the series opener with some momentum, posting a 2-1 mark with a 2.89 ERA in his last six starts.

Strasburg is expected to be no worse for wear after leaving Saturday's start due to a cramp in his calf. The top overall pick of the 2009 draft, he struck out 10 versus Cincinnati for his fourth double-digit performance in his last six outings. Strasburg has struggled with the home-run ball, however, as he has been taken deep seven times in his last six turns.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco is just 4-for-30 (.133) versus Washington this season.

                        2. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is 8-for-19 with three RBIs and three runs scored in his last four games.

                        3. The Phillies selected California high school OF Mickey Moniak with the first overall pick of the 2016 MLB draft on Thursday.

                        PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Phillies 1

The eighth time turned out to be the charm for the St. Louis Cardinals, who needed that many attempts to finally move a season-high four games over .500. Eight attempts has not been enough for right-hander Michael Wacha, who goes for his first win in nine starts when the Cardinals open a three-game set at the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Even though Wacha is 0-6 over his last eight starts, St. Louis has won four of five to pull into a second-place tie with Pittsburgh in the National League Central. Catcher Yadier Molina was 6-for-12 while Brandon Moss went 4-for-9 with a pair of homers and four RBIs as the Cardinals won two of three in Cincinnati. The Pirates spent what was scheduled to be a day off criss-crossing the country for a makeup game at Colorado and came out on the short end of an 11-5 decision to lose for the ninth time in 13 games. Pittsburgh is 5-1 against St. Louis, including a season-opening three-game sweep.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (2-6, 5.16 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (5-4, 2.85)

Wacha's winless drought stretched to eight starts following a five-inning stint versus San Francisco on Saturday in which he permitted four runs on six hits. The 24-year-old Wacha has been knocked around for 31 runs over his last six turns and has failed to pitch beyond five innings in four of them. Wacha allowed four earned runs in each of his two outings against the Pirates this season to fall to 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA in eight career starts.

Although Cole has not won in his last three trips to the mound, he has not permitted more than three runs in any of his last six outings. Cole did not factor in the decision last time out against the Los Angeles Angels, registering a quality start by yielding three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Cole matched his season high with seven strikeouts while giving up two runs in six innings at St. Louis on May 8 to improve to 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA versus the Cardinals.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Cardinals 1B Matt Adams ran his hitting streak to nine games with a pinch-hit single Thursday, but he is batting .209 lifetime versus Pittsburgh.

                            2. Pirates 2B Josh Harrison is 10-for-22 during a five-game hitting streak.

                            3. Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter has hit safely in six straight games and is 17-for-36 over his last nine contests.

                            PREDICTION: Cardinals 4, Pirates 3

The Baltimore Orioles ended May with a whimper but they have once again taken charge of the American League East in June. The Orioles look to make it six wins in a row when they continue a four-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

After finishing last month with a 5-10 swoon to fall out of first place in the division, Baltimore has gone 8-1 since June began while claiming five of six games against AL East foes, including a comeback 6-5 win in Thursday's series opener. Slugger Chris Davis returned from a one-game layoff to homer and drive in three runs, the last coming on a sacrifice fly in the ninth to snap a 5-5 tie. The Blue Jays will try to slow down the first-place club when they give the ball to Marco Estrada, who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning at Fenway Park his last time out and leads the American League in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (5.304). Kevin Gausman goes for the Orioles, who have outscored opponents 26-8 during their five-game run.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (0-3, 3.52 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (4-2, 2.41)

Gausman gave up nine runs in 11 innings over his final two starts in May but recovered nicely with six strong frames in a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Sunday. He allowed one run and seven hits and kept the ball in the yard after serving up three homers in each of his previous two outings. The 25-year-old's last win came in his 2015 season finale against the Blue Jays on Sept. 30, when he allowed a run in eight innings and struck out a career-high 10.

Estrada has allowed 12 hits in 31 innings over his last four starts, lasting exactly eight frames in three of those outings. The 32-year-old is 2-1 with a 1.30 ERA in five home starts and allowed a run in five innings while striking out a season high-tying nine in his first meeting with the Orioles on April 21 in Baltimore. The Orioles' starting lineup from Thursday is a combined 16-for-81 (.198) with 27 strikeouts against Estrada.

                                2. Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista is considered day-to-day after leaving Thursday's game with a sore right thigh.

                                3. Baltimore LHP Zach Britton got the save Thursday to set a team record for consecutive save conversions to begin a season (19-for-19).
