Outfielders are key for Yanks entering Tigers series
By Larry Fleisher, The Sports Xchange

NEW YORK -- It is not a secret that having Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner on base in the same game leads to runs for the New York Yankees.
The speedy outfielding duo's ability to get on base helped the Yankees win four in a row over the Los Angeles Angels.
On Friday, New York will hope to keep getting a spark from Ellsbury and Gardner when it opens a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers.
The duo has scored in the same game 13 times this season and not surprisingly, the Yankees have won 12 of those games. In those games, New York has scored 97 runs and posted a .327 batting average (153-for-468).
"Our job is to get on base and when we're getting on base and giving those guys behind us RBI opportunities, good things happen," Gardner said Wednesday. "Our job at the top is to get on base any way we can and try and score and put up some crooked numbers."
During their four-game sweep of the Angels, the Yankees scored 29 runs and batted .343 (47-for-137). Ellsbury and Gardner combined to score 12 while batting .560 (14-for-25) as New York reached the .500 mark with Thursday's 6-3 victory.
The Yankees will be facing another opponent they have done well with at home in recent years. New York has won and 17 of 23 meetings with Detroit at the current Yankee Stadium.
New York's success over Detroit at Yankee Stadium also includes CC Sabathia (3-4, 2.58 ERA), who is 7-4 with a 3.33 ERA in 12 starts against the Tigers since joining the Yankees in 2009. Overall he is 20-13 with a 4.23 ERA in 38 starts against Detroit and is one of four active pitchers with 20 wins over an opponent.
Sabathia also has had success in the last 10 months as he is 5-6 with a 2.72 ERA in 18 starts since Aug. 1. He last pitched Sunday when he took a no-decision in Baltimore after allowing two hits in five scoreless innings of a 3-1 loss.
The Tigers have won six of their last eight games but had a five-game winning streak stopped with Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Jordan Zimmermann had a difficult outing in his return from missing two starts with a groin injury as he allowed seven runs on eight hits -- six for extra bases -- in 4 2/3 innings.
"They just got to Zimm today; he was a little off his game," manager Brad Ausmus said. "Everyone's going to have their off days."
One player who has not been off his game lately has been Miguel Cabrera, who is batting .293 (12-for-41) during a 10-game hitting streak. He also is one hit away from becoming the seventh active player to get 2,400 career hits.
While Cabrera is batting .342 (77-for-260) with 12 home runs and 69 RBI in 63 games against the Yankees and .380 (30-for-79) with 10 home runs and 22 RBI in 23 games at the current Yankee Stadium, he has had some recent regular-season struggles against Sabathia.
Cabrera is a .282 hitter (11-for-39) with three home runs and 14 RBI against Sabathia, but none of those hits have come recently. He is hitless in his last 15 at-bats against Sabathia since April 29, 2011.
Mike Pelfrey will start for Detroit and is familiar with the Yankees from his time with the Mets. In seven career starts against the Yankees he is 2-4 with a 4.74 and when he opposed Sabathia on April 9 in Detroit, he allowed six runs (two earned) and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Pelfrey collected his first victory in 11 starts Saturday when he allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox.
"That felt really good," Pelfrey said. "That's my first one in Detroit, and the guys made sure to celebrate with me."
The Tigers should also have center fielder Cameron Maybin in the lineup Friday after he missed two games due to soreness in his left wrist.

MLB roundup: Orioles win 5th straight behind Davis
      By The Sports Xchange

TORONTO -- Chris Davis hit the game-tying home run in the seventh and had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 Thursday night.
Pedro Alvarez also homered for Baltimore, which won its fifth in a row. Toronto lost for the third time in four games.
Dylan Bundy (2-1) allowed a hit, a walk and a hit batter in 2 1/3 innings to earn the win. Left-hander Zach Britton pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 19th save.
The Blue Jays lost right fielder Jose Bautista to tightness in the right thigh. He walked in the sixth inning and was replaced by pinch runner Ezequiel Carrera, who also took over for him defensively. Bautista was listed as day-to-day.

      Yankees 6, Angels 3
NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran highlighted a five-run fifth inning with a tiebreaking two-run double as New York completed a four-game sweep of Los Angeles.
Beltran did not homer for the fourth straight game but the switch-hitting right fielder helped the Yankees get their first four-game sweep of the Angels since 1994 by driving in 10 runs during the series.
New York won its fourth straight game while Los Angeles has lost nine straight in New York and 15 of their last 18 visits to Yankee Stadium.

      Cardinals 3, Reds 2
CINCINNATI -- Yadier Molina's single with the bases loaded drove home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Adam Wainwright recorded his fifth consecutive quality start to lift St. Louis past Cincinnati.
The Cardinals have won 15 of the past 22 series against the Reds, including eight of 11 at Great American Ball Park.
Wainwright retired 14 straight before hitting Joey Votto with two outs in the sixth. He wound up allowing two runs on two hits and a walk -- all of which came in the first inning -- while striking out nine over six frames.

      White Sox 3, Nationals 1
CHICAGO -- Melky Cabrera went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, and Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak.
Brett Lawrie added a run-scoring double for the White Sox, who scored all of their runs in the first inning. Chicago won for only the seventh time in the past 27 games.
Daniel Murphy went 1-for-4 with a home run to lead the Nationals. Washington managed one run on five hits after breaking out for 31 runs in its previous three games.

      Mets 5, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE -- Curtis Granderson had two hits, including his fifth leadoff home run of the season, and Bartolo Colon carried a shutout into the seventh inning to lead New York over Milwaukee.
Colon (5-3) didn't walk a batter and allowed one run on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts over his seven-inning effort and took a victory for the first time in his last three decisions.
Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera also finished with two hits for the Mets, who beat the Brewers for the fourth time in four tries this season.
Scooter Gennett tied a career-high with four hits, including an RBI double in the eighth for Milwaukee.

      Rangers 5, Astros 3
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Martin Perez cruised, Prince Fielder homered and Texas returned to its winning ways.
The American West-leading Rangers took three of four games against their instate rivals and improved to 9-1 against Houston this season. The Astros had beaten Texas for the first time this year Wednesday but squandered a 2-0 lead in the series finale.
Perez (5-4) overcame a shaky third inning to win his fourth in a row. He gave up two runs -- both in the third -- in six innings in his 10th quality start of the season.

      Marlins 10, Twins 3
MINNEAPOLIS -- Miami sent a dozen men to the plate in a seven-run seventh inning to break open a tie game and take the finale of its three-game series with Minnesota.
With the game tied 2-2, the Marlins notched eight hits in the seventh off a trio of Twins pitchers, snapping a two-game losing streak. Tom Koehler (4-6) allowed four hits in six innings to earn the victory.
Ervin Santana (1-6) pitched 6 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs and nine hits for Minnesota, which has lost four of its last six, but had taken the first two games of the series with Miami.

      Rockies 11, Pirates 5
DENVER -- Jorge De La Rosa took over for faltering starter Chad Bettis and pitched four perfect innings as Colorado defeated Pittsburgh.
The Pirates had won eight straight games at Coors Field,
DJ LeMahieu had two hits, three RBIs and scored three runs for Colorado. Nolan Arenado had three hits and two RBIs, and Charlie Blackmon and Ryan Raburn each drove in two runs for the Rockies. LeMahieu hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

      Indians 5, Mariners 3
SEATTLE -- Rookie Tyler Naquin's fourth home run in his past six games broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, and Cleveland overcame two home runs from Robinson Cano to beat Seattle.
Naquin hit an 0-2 pitch from Mariners reliever Joaquin Benoit (1-1) just over the right field fence for a two-run shot that gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning. Jason Kipnis added an RBI single off Benoit to open up a 5-2 lead.
Seattle got one run back before Cleveland closer Cody Allen came on with two outs in the eighth and got through a shaky ninth to earn his 13th save of the season. Allen struck out Cano to strand runners on first and third -- the eighth and ninth Seattle runners left on base for the game -- in the ninth.

Reds' DeSclafani returns to face A's
By Jeff Wallner, The Sports Xchange

        CINCINNATI -- Disco is back.
Not the musical genre popular of the 1970s, but Cincinnati Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani, nicknamed "Disco" by teammates.
DeSclafani, an integral part of the team's rebuilding efforts, makes his season debut Friday night against the Oakland Athletics. He is finally recovered from an oblique injury he sustained in spring training.
"We've talked about all this rebuild stuff, but all we've really done is deconstruct to this point," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "DeSclafani is part of the rebuild. He's a building bock toward rebuilding this pitching staff."
In 31 starts which led all National League rookies last year, DeSclafani went 9-13 with a 4.05 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 184 2/3 innings.
The 26-year old was penned into the Reds' starting rotation before straining his left oblique in his final spring training start. DeSclafani made two minor league rehab starts in April, but was shut down for nearly a month because of discomfort.
Heading into Friday night's interleague series opener against Oakland, DeSclafani said the oblique is a non-issue.
"I don't even think about it," he said. "I had three rehab starts and a couple bullpens in between and I'm throwing 100 percent. My pitches are sharp for the most part. I think I'm good to go."
Cincinnati is banking on its other injured starters Homer Bailey, Raisel Iglesias and Michael Lorenzen to return later this month or -- in the case of Bailey -- early July.
"It was definitely hard to watch when they (starting) rotation struggled," DeSclafani said. "It is hard for everyone and you want to contribute. It will be nice to join them."
Opposing DeSclafani is right-hander Sonny Gray, who is also coming back from injury. Gray was reinstated from the disabled list Sunday and earned a no-decision with one earned run and five hits allowed in five innings of the Athletics' 5-2 loss at Houston. Gray faces Cincinnati for the first time in his career.
Oakland (25-34) has fared well in interleague play, posting a winning record in 12 of the past 19 seasons including four straight. The Athletics are 191-154 all-time against NL opponents, the fourth-best mark in the majors.
Cincinnati is 6-10 all-time versus Oakland, including 2-0 at Great American Ball Park. The teams haven't met since 2013, when they split the season series 2-2.
There's some postseason history between the two clubs, however. The Reds swept heavily favored Oakland in the 1990 World Series while losing to them in seven games in the 1972 Series.
Both clubs sit in last place in their divisions. The Reds dropped two of three to the St. Louis Cardinals while the Athletics have lost five straight.
"We still feel good about this team; it's been a frustrating five days so far," Oakland catcher Stephen Vogt said.
Things are looking up for the Reds, who are fortunate to have DeSclafani back on the mound Friday.
"Long time coming," Price said. "He was such a big part of our rotation last year and he was scheduled to be our opening day starter this year. It's good. He's put in a lot of hard work.

Preview: Phillies (29-31) at Nationals (36-24)

          Game: 1
          Venue: Nationals Park
          Date: June 10, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The last time the Phillies were in the nation's capital was just more than a month ago as Philadelphia swept three games from the Washington Nationals.

The Phillies didn't allow a run in the last two games of the series, getting strong starts from Jeremy Hellickson and Aaron Nola.

Hellickson (4-3, 3.80 ERA) faces the Nationals for the fourth time this season when the Phillies begin a three-game series Friday night in Washington. Stephen Strasburg (9-0, 2.85) is slated to start on the mound for the first-place Nationals (36-24).

Philadelphia is reeling, having lost 10 of its last 13. The Phillies (29-31) lost to the visiting Chicago Cubs 8-1 on Wednesday. First baseman Ryan Howard is hitting .150 after fanning three times Wednesday.

"Well, the only good news is we don't see the Cubs the rest of the year," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin told MLB.com.

The Nationals scored at least 10 runs for the third game in a row in an 11-4 victory in Chicago against the White Sox on Wednesday. But Washington lost 3-1 with just five hits in the series finale Thursday, which meant the Phillies (off on Thursday) were in the nation's capital long before the Nationals.

Washington is coming off a three-city, nine-game road trip that matches a season-long 11-day swing. The Nationals were 6-3 on the trip.

"This can be a dangerous lineup," center fielder and leadoff hitter Ben Revere told The Washington Post. "I know we've got a few guys trying to feel out their swings, and I'm one of them. But when every single body is on the same page, we're going to be a fun team to watch."

Said manager Dusty Baker to The Post: "You just got to keep it going and not worry about what we did yesterday -- just memorize it and try to figure out how to do that (hitting) on a daily basis."

Strasburg has won 12 decisions in a row dating back to last year. It is the longest streak in D.C. baseball history since Walter Johnson won 13 in a row in 1924.

He will be making the start six years and two days after his Major League debut -- when he fanned 14 at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates -- and seven years after he was taken first overall in the MLB draft out of San Diego State.

Strasburg left his last start Saturday in Cincinnati in the sixth inning with a cramp in his right calf on a muggy day. The Nationals lost -- the first time in 15 starts Washington did not win a game started by the right-hander dating back to last year.

"I just got real dehydrated out there," Strasburg told reporters after the game. "It just kind of grabbed me a little bit on a pitch to (Brandon) Phillips. I got some treatment on it and it feels fine."

The Washington player with the most at-bats against Hellickson is utility infielder Stephen Drew, who is hitting .364 in 11 at-bats against the right-hander.

Hellickson, from Iowa, has gone seven innings in his last two starts against Washington and fanned eight each time. In those two games he has allowed one run and five hits, after he was hit hard the first time he faced the Nationals in 2016.

Washington slugger Bryce Harper was hit by a pitch by Hellickson in a game earlier this month in Philadelphia and that caused Harper to miss a few games. Hellickson batted eighth in the lineup in his last start at Washington in April.

Preview: Cardinals (32-28) at Pirates (32-28)

            Game: 1
            Venue: PNC Park
            Date: June 10, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

As the Pittsburgh Pirates evolved from punching bags to a perennial contender, the St. Louis Cardinals remained their nemesis.

However, if the first six games of the teams' season series this year is any indication, Pittsburgh might be seizing control. The Pirates scored a season-opening sweep at PNC Park, then took two of three last month in Busch Stadium.

"It's always going to be a spirited series," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said after an 8-5 victory over St. Louis on May 8. "They play hard to the finish, and they have a lot of the same characteristics that we have. That being said, we were within a bad bounce of sweeping them here."

Hurdle and the Pirates get their next chance Friday night when they welcome the Cardinals to town for a weekend series, and Pittsburgh appears to have a favorable matchup to start the series.

Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole (5-4, 2.85 ERA) owns a 5-3 career record with a 2.91 ERA in 11 starts against the Cardinals, including the aforementioned 8-5 win last month in which he yielded two runs over six innings while fanning seven.

Meanwhile, St. Louis starter Michael Wacha (2-6, 5.16) hasn't won a game since April 23 in San Diego and is coming off another uneven outing. Wacha gave up six hits and four runs over five innings Saturday night against the San Francisco Giants. He was bailed out of a seventh straight loss by an offense that wiped out a 4-0 deficit by cracking four homers in a nine-batter stretch to produce a 7-4 decision.

The Cardinals are at least coming into Pittsburgh with a bit of momentum. They have won six of their last nine games, including a 3-2 victory Thursday night in Cincinnati that pushed them to a season-high four games above .500 at 32-28.

What's more, St. Louis finally might be getting catcher Yadier Molina back into a groove with the bat. After enduring a 1-for-39 skid that dropped his average into the .250s, Molina has hits in four straight games, including a 3-for-4 outing Thursday night that included a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning.

"Lately, I've started seeing the ball better and feeling better," he said. "I have a good base and a good stance. When you don't feel right at the plate, you start thinking about stuff."

As for the Pirates (32-28), they lost 11-5 Thursday at Colorado in a makeup game, leaving Cole in Pittsburgh. They also left starting pitcher Jeff Locke in for 4 2/3 innings to give up 11 hits and 11 runs in an attempt to save a bullpen taxed by a doubleheader and an extra-inning game against the New York Mets the previous two days.

The series' other pitching matchups feature the Cardinals' Carlos Martinez (6-5, 3.76) against the Pirates' Francisco Liriano (4-5, 5.25) Saturday night, followed by Mike Leake (4-4, 4.22) opposing Jon Niese (6-2, 3.93) in the series finale late Sunday afternoon.

The teams enter the series tied for second place in the NL Central, 10 games behind the Chicago Cubs.

Preview: Orioles (36-23) at Blue Jays (32-30)

                Game: 2
                Venue: Rogers Centre
                Date: June 10, 2016 7:07 PM EDT

TORONTO -- If the Toronto Blue Jays hope to even their series with the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, they have the right pitcher going for them.

Right-hander Marco Estrada will be trying to win his fourth straight start, and if he does, it would give the Blue Jays their first victory of the important four-game series.

The Orioles scored a 6-5 comeback win over the Blue Jays in the opener Thursday with first baseman Chris Davis piling up three RBIs on a solo home run and two sacrifice flies.

Davis tied the game in the seventh inning with his 13th homer of the season and his 32nd home run against Toronto since 2008. No one has hit more against the Blue Jays in that span. Davis also jumped to catch a drive by Toronto's Justin Smoak in the third inning, and his sacrifice fly in the ninth snapped a tie.

"You understand you are not going to go 4-for-4 every night and make every play on defense," Davis said. "But these are the games you grind for and enjoy and you move forward and see what tomorrow has for you."

The Orioles (36-23) won their fifth consecutive game Thursday and eighth in nine. They are a season-best 13 games over .500.

The Blue Jays (32-30) have lost three of their past four games after winning 12 of 16. They are still trying to find a consistent offense and some relievers who can get outs.

The Orioles lead the American League East by two games over the Boston Red Sox and 5 1/2 over the third-place Blue Jays.

Toronto's starting pitching has been a strength, and no one has been better for the Blue Jays than Estrada, who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in Boston on Sunday. He allowed two hits and two runs in eight-plus innings, and the Blue Jays held on to win 5-4 over the Red Sox.

In his past three starts, Estrada is 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He has allowed nine hits, 10 walks and five earned runs in 23 innings during that span.

"The one thing about him, he just doesn't give in," Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin said. "Even if there's a couple of guys that get on, he's still out there making quality pitches. He'll rarely make a mistake over the middle of the plate in a big situation. And he's able to mix his pitches better than anybody, and that's what's tough hitting against him. You don't know if you're getting a fastball, curveball, slider, a cutter or changeup."

In seven career outings against the Orioles, including five starts, Estrada is 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA.

The Orioles send out right-hander Kevin Gausman, who is still seeking his first win of the season. He is 0-3 in his first nine starts with a decent ERA, 3.52. In nine career games against the Blue Jays, including four starts, he is 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA.

In his most recent start, he did not earn a decision, leaving after six innings trailing the New York Yankees 1-0 Sunday. The Orioles rallied in the eighth inning with three runs against Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman to win 3-1.

"You just try to give your team a chance to win," Gausman said. "(If) you give these guys an opportunity late in the game, they are going to, more often than not, they are going to come up for you and put up some good at-bats."

Preview: Astros (29-33) at Rays (27-31)

                  Game: 1
                  Venue: Tropicana Field
                  Date: June 10, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros, both four games under .500, meet at Tropicana Field for a three-game weekend series starting Friday, though they're headed in opposite directions in recent play.

Tampa Bay, which had lost four straight to open a 10-game road trip, closed that stretch by winning five of six games, so they return home with a healthy shot of momentum. The Astros, who had won eight of nine games before opening a series against the Texas Rangers, dropped three of four in that series to lose much of their momentum.

"That's something we want to maintain," Rays manager Kevin Cash said after Wednesday's win against the Diamondbacks. "The guys have kind of rallied around each other and it's been really fun to watch."

Many of the Rays' slumping bats from the first two months of the season returned to form, most recently outfielder Desmond Jennings, who went 5-for-11 in the Arizona series with two home runs, this after going 4-for-31 before the series. He raised his season average from .171 to .194 in the three-game series, helping offset the key losses of outfielders Kevin Kiermaier and Brandon Guyer to recent injuries.

"He broke out -- he carried us in a lot of ways this series for sure," Cash said of Jennings' play. "We saw that electric player we know is there."

The Astros nearly lost more than a series in Texas -- shortstop Carlos Correa landed awkwardly going into first base in the fifth inning Thursday and had to leave the game, though officially he's just day to day with a left ankle sprain, with the team optimistic he can avoid a trip to the disabled list.

Friday's opener at Tropicana Field will be a homecoming for Astros right-hander Lance McCullers, 22, who played at Tampa's Jesuit High School. He pitched once at the Trop last year, striking out 10 batters but giving up four runs in six innings to take the loss.

Houston, in the middle series of a 10-game road trip, must improve its offensive production after scoring exactly three runs in each of its last three games, losing two. There's more uncertainty in the Astros bullpen after late-inning struggles in the Rangers series, while the Rays have seen fill-in closer Alex Colome convert all 17 of his save opportunities without giving up a single run.

Will Harris could be stepping into a full-time role as the team's closer, though manager A.J. Hinch is hesitant to formally give him the title. The 31-year-old right-hander has a 0.33 ERA in 27 games this season and has the team's last two saves -- he's performing well whether he has a new role or not.

"Whether he's titled the closer or a set-up guy, he's Will Harris. He's got really good pitches and he can get anybody out in the league," Hinch told the Houston Chronicle on Thursday. "I'm sorry to disappoint those that want titles next to people's names. But I just want to get the 27 outs and have more runs than these guys."

Preview: Athletics (25-34) at Reds (22-38)

                    Game: 1
                    Venue: Great American Ball Park
                    Date: June 10, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

It's good. He's put in a lot of hard work."

Preview: Cubs (41-17) at Braves (17-42)

                      Game: 1
                      Venue: Turner Field
                      Date: June 10, 2016 7:35 PM EDT

It doesn't get any easier for the Atlanta Braves when they return home from a six-game West Coast road trip on Friday.

That's because the Braves, owner of the worst record in the major leagues at 17-42, will be staring straight a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs (41-17), the team with the best record in the major leagues

The opening game of the three-game series at Turner Field -- the final visit to the venue of the Cubs -- will feature Atlanta right-hander Bud Norris (1-7, 5.28) against Chicago right-hander Jason Hammel (7-1, 2.14).

The Braves completed a 1-5 road trip on Wednesday with a 4-2 win over San Diego. The victory ended a six-game losing streak and marked Atlanta's first win in San Diego since 2012, a period of 12 games.

Chicago is in the middle of a nine-game, 10-day trip that began in Philadelphia, where the Cubs won two of three. Chicago won the rubber game 8-1 on Wednesday, as John Lackey threw seven scoreless innings. After three games in Atlanta, Chicago wraps up the trip with a three-game set in Washington.

Chicago was 6-1 against Atlanta in 2015 and outscored the Braves 40-19. Chicago batters clubbed 13 homers against the Braves, a total exceeded only by the Mets, whom the Braves played 19 times.

Hammel won his last start on June 4 against Arizona, when he allowed just a two-run homer in the first inning in seven innings of a 5-3 win. He homer was the only hit he allowed.

The Braves have fared well historically against Hammel. In nine career starts against Atlanta, he is 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA. He had one start against the Braves in 2015 and won the game. Hammel is only 1-3 with a 5.74 ERA in five starts at Turner Field.

Norris began the season in Atlanta's starting rotation, but was moved to the bullpen after five starts. On the verge of being released, Norris responded by giving the team a solid effort as the long man and eventually started being used in late inning situations.

Norris returned to the rotation last week when the club placed Mike Foltynewicz on the disabled list with right elbow soreness. Norris allowed one run in five innings against the Dodgers, but was tagged for the loss. He is 4-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career appearances, 10 starts, against the Cubs.

Atlanta is hopeful that the top of the order -- center fielder Ender Inciarte, infielder Chase d'Arnaud and first baseman Freddie Freeman -- can produce like they did on Wednesday. The trio was 7-for-12, scored three runs and drove in three runs.

"What they did today translated into a win," Freeman told MLB.com. "It seemed like they were always on base and we were able to get them in today."

Chicago was pleased to see Ben Zobrist break out of a mild slump. He was 0-for-18 when he hit a long homer off Andrew Bailey.

"Even when Zo's not getting hits, he gets on base," Chicago manager Joe Maddon told MLB.com. "He's always contributing somehow."

The Braves are expected to recall infielder Jace Peterson from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill the roster spot that became vacant when Kelly Johnson was traded to the Mets. The Braves played Wednesday's game with a short bench.

Peterson was sent to Gwinnett after batting .182 through the 21 games. He is batting just .186 in 26 games for the G-Braves.

Atlanta also played right-handed pitcher Williams Perez on the 15-day DL with a right rotator cuff strain and recalled John Gant from Triple-A Gwinnett.

On Thursday, the Cubs obtained utilityman Chris Coghlan from Oakland in exchange for minor league infielder Arismendy Alcantara. Coghlan played the last two seasons with the Cubs before he was traded to the A's over the winder. Coghlan was batting .146 with five homers and had started at five different positions.

The Cubs will have to make a roster move on Friday to clear a spot for Coghlan.

Preview: Mets (33-26) at Brewers (28-32)

                        Game: 2
                        Venue: Miller Park
                        Date: June 10, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- Curtis Granderson isn't off to the best of starts, but New York Mets manager Terry Collins has no plans to pull the veteran center fielder from his familiar spot atop the order.

Granderson rewarded Collins' faith Thursday, picking up two hits -- including his fifth leadoff home run of the season -- and scoring twice in the Mets' 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

"I think he's our best option," Collins said. "I know when he is in the right state, he gets on base. You look at what he did last year getting on base, it was incredible for us. Yes, he's getting off to a slow start, but there are a few of us off to a slow start. I just think he's the guy."

Collins hopes Granderson can keep things going Friday night when the Mets and Brewers continue their four-game series.

"I think he's going to come on," Collins said. "He likes leading off and ... he can put a run on the board in a hurry."

The Mets also are optimistic that their Friday starting pitcher, Matt Harvey, can continue his recent run of success. He shaved more than a full run off his ERA in his past two starts, allowing just one run on six hits with only one walk and nine strikeouts over 14 innings.

"It's still two starts, and obviously, the massive struggles that happened before, the only thing you want to think of is not letting that kind of creep back in," Harvey said after his last outing. "But feeling pretty good is definitely a positive."

It is a world of difference from his first 10 starts this season, when he went 3-7 with a 6.08 ERA without pitching any further than the sixth inning in any of those games.

Collins credits Harvey's mental adjustments, more so than anything mechanical, for his recent turnaround.

"When you're mentally strong, you don't worry about the other stuff," Collins said. "You fight through it. And that's the Matt Harvey that we always knew. When he'd give up a home run and retire 16 in a row after that, it never bothered him."

Harvey will be making his first career appearance against the Brewers, who will start rookie right-hander Junior Guerra, who will look to get back on track after two mediocre performances against the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.

Prior to those outings, Guerra was a stabilizing force for Milwaukee's rotation. Brought up from Triple-A Colorado Springs May 3, he went 3-0 with a 3.30 ERA in his first five outings, including a pair of quality starts.

"He's certainly done his job," manager Craig Counsell said of Guerra, once a Mets farmhand. "He's (gotten better as the game goes on) in a bunch of his starts. He's getting to 90-100 pitches and still going strong, still going really good."

Guerra has never pitched against the Mets in his two-year major league career.

Since being swept by the Mets from May 20-22, Milwaukee won 10 of 15 games before falling Thursday night. The Mets have won two in a row after a three-game skid.

Preview: Red Sox (34-25) at Twins (18-41)

                          Game: 1
                          Venue: Target Field
                          Date: June 10, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

Dustin Pedroia looks to build on his league-leading 15-game hitting streak and the Boston Red Sox will attempt to bounce back from a poor offensive showing when they open a three-game series against the Twins on Friday in Minnesota.

Pedroia went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout to keep his streak alive Wednesday night as the Boston bats were held in check by Madison Bumgarner in a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Every day since May 3, a Red Sox hitter has held at least a share of the majors' longest hitting streak. Jackie Bradley Jr. stretched his to 29 games before passing the torch to Xander Bogaerts, whose streak reached 26 games.

David Ortiz, the retiring 40-year-old slugger who will be honored in a pregame ceremony Friday, held a 13-game streak until he grounded out as a pinch hitter Tuesday in the Red Sox's 5-3, 10-inning win over the Giants.

Boston (34-25) scored five or more runs in nine of its last 12 games. The Red Sox have scored a league-leading 342 runs this season, an average of 5.8 per game.

Despite the offensive production, the Red Sox enter the series in Minnesota with a 2-5 mark over their last seven games, and they trail the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles by two games.

In the Red Sox's favor, they have their most consistent starter -- right-handed knuckleballer Steven Wright -- on the mound to open the series. Wright (6-4, 2.29 ERA) is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in one career start against the Twins.

In his most recent start, Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, Wright gave up three runs, all unearned, on three hits and five walks while striking out three in a five-inning no-decision.

"He pitches deep into games and he's a road warrior," Red Sox manager John Farrell told RedSox.com. "He's been a main contributor and a dependable starter."

Minnesota (18-41) has hit just .231 (6-for-26) against Wright, who gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two in a six inning no-decision last June 4.

The Twins won 8-4, thanks partly to Kurt Suzuki's 3-for-3 performance with two walks and an RBI. Brian Dozier also collected a pair of hits off Wright. Robbie Grossman has a hit in two career at-bats and also worked a walk against Wright.

Minnesota is licking its wounds after a 10-3 loss to the Marlins on Thursday night, but it still enters the weekend series on a high note, having taken two of three games against Miami.

The Twins have dropped seven of their past 10 games, though.

Minnesota's Friday starter, right-hander Tyler Duffey (2-4, 4.79 ERA), has struggled over his past four outings, posting a 7.94 ERA. The 25-year-old has never faced Boston.

Home cooking hasn't been a good thing for Duffey, who is 1-2 with a 5.92 ERA through four starts at Target Field this season.

That trend continued in Duffey's last start. He allowed four runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks, but he did strike out eight in a 5 2/3-inning no-decision Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Adding to the Twins' pitching woes is the uncertain status of recently converted reliever Phil Hughes, who left Thursday's contest with a bruised left knee after being hit with a line drive in the ninth inning.

X-rays were negative, and Hughes will undergo an MRI exam on Friday.

"We're optimistic as far as no breakage," Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

Minnesota went 5-2 against Boston last year, including a three-game sweep. The teams have not met this year. The Twins will play four games at Fenway Park in late July.

CHICAGO -- White Sox left-hander Chris Sale will look to snap a three-game winless drought when he takes the mound Friday night to open a weekend series in Chicago against the Kansas City Royals.

Sale (9-2, 2.54 ERA) earned the victory in each of his first nine starts before enduring several turbulent outings. In his past three starts, the 27-year-old hurler is 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA.

However, Sale's teammates have no doubt that he can regain his dominant form.

"It's going to be fun to watch him pitch," right-hander Miguel Gonzalez said. "He's been battling through a couple games, but you know what? We're happy to have him here."

A series-ending win against the Washington Nationals on Thursday helped to improve the mood in the White Sox clubhouse. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Chicago (30-30), which led the American League Central for 47 days before tumbling into fourth place during the recent skid.

Kansas City (30-29) also is reeling. The Royals have lost seven straight games after back-to-back sweeps at the hands of the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles.

On Thursday, the Royals learned right-hander Yordano Ventura received a nine-game suspension for hitting Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. The play incited a violent brawl, and both Ventura and Machado were ejected. The Royals will appeal the suspension, according to the Kansas City Star.

"My plan was to pitch inside, and one got away," Ventura told the newspaper through a translator.

Ten-year veteran Ian Kennedy (4-4, 3.44 ERA) will try to reverse the Royals' ugly slide. Kennedy has faced the White Sox only once in his career, limiting them to one run on four hits in six innings.

With more than 100 games remaining in the regular season, either team is panicking about its poor performance. The White Sox reiterated their belief in the team's chances to contend by signing veteran first baseman Justin Morneau to a one-year, $1 million contract on Thursday. Morneau will not be available until around the All-Star break, but his presence could provide a left-handed boost in the lineup.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said the organization had spoken with Morneau since mid-March about joining the team.

"In Justin, we're getting a proven professional hitter, a guy who has the ability to get on base with a little bit of pop and hopefully will fit in nicely in the middle of that lineup," Hahn said. "In some ways, it's a trade-deadline acquisition that we're banking now as we continue the search for other acquisitions."

Morneau, 35, said he was eager to join the White Sox veteran-laden clubhouse. Two seasons ago, he hit a league-leading .319 with 17 home runs and 82 RBIs for the Colorado Rockies.

"This was the opportunity that I liked the most, the best opportunity and the one that seemed to fit both sides well," Morneau said. "I think there's a little bit of a need for some more left-handed bats in this lineup. We obviously have a very good first baseman over there so that's something I'll be able to DH and try to help him out whenever I can. I think the situation just worked out well."

Preview: Padres (25-36) at Rockies (28-32)

                              Game: 1
                              Venue: Coors Field

DENVER -- After beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 in a makeup game Thursday, the Colorado Rockies will begin their scheduled five-game homestand with a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.

The teams met last weekend at Petco Park, and the Padres won 4-0 and 4-3 before the Rockies averted a sweep with a 10-3 victory. The Rockies then went to Los Angeles and took two of three games from the Dodgers before beating the Pirates for their fourth win in the past five games.

"Hopefully this is the start of things," Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu said after Thursday's victory. "We had a really big series in LA, winning two out of three. And we owe the Padres a little bit, so it was good to get the first one at home, for sure."

The Rockies, who are 11-15 at Coors Field this season, will send Jon Gray to the mound Friday. He has won three straight starts, including Sunday at San Diego when he had a career-high 12 strikeouts while allowing two runs five hits in seven innings.

While winning his past three starts, Gray has a 3.10 ERA (20 1/3 innings, 7 earned runs) with seven walks and 22 strikeouts. In four career starts against the Padres, Gray is 1-1 with a 1.96 ERA (23 innings, 5 earned runs), four walks and 34 strikeouts.

The Padres, who were off Thursday, won two of three games from the Atlanta Braves to improve to 5-3 this month. The Padres and will make an out-and-back jaunt to Colorado. After three games there, the Padresa then return to Petco Park for a seven-game homestand with the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals.

Andrew Cashner will start Friday for the Padres, who won two of three from the Rockies at Coors Field from April 8-10. He faced the Rockies in his last start Saturday and was the winning pitcher, allowing eight hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Padres first baseman Wil Myers has been hot lately and will be looking to continue his torrid stretch in the hitters' paradise that is Coors Field. He hit two solo homers in San Diego's 4-2 loss Wednesday to the Braves for his first multi-homer game with the Padres. In the Padres' just-concluded eight-game homestand that resulted in five San Diego victories, Myers hit five home runs. He has had five straight multi-hit games and is batting .471 (16-for-34) in with four doubles, five homers and a 1.502 OPS.

"I think he's got all the potential in the world," Padres manager Andy Green told MLB.com on Wednesday. "I wouldn't want to put any kind of limitation on him whatsoever. To me, from an offensive standpoint, when Wil stays disciplined within his approach and fires off his A swing, he's as good as anybody in the game."
