      Preview: Rays at Blue Jays

      Current Conditions - Toronto

      CLOUDY 45 °F
      Wind: E 10
      5-Day Forecast
GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (18-19) at Toronto Blue Jays (19-22)
      DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 18 - 7:07 PM EST
      WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
      LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays are hardly an offensive juggernaut by any means, ranking in the bottom third among major-league teams in a number of categories prior to their three-game series versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto may offer a different take on the Rays' offense after being on the business end of a pair of barrages entering Wednesday's finale at Rogers Centre.

Tampa Bay launched four homers and set season highs in both runs (13) and hits (17) in the opener on Monday before matching that hit total the following night in a 12-2 rout. Steve Pearce went deep in the opener and is 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the series heading into Wednesday's tilt versus veteran knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, against whom he is just 1-for-6 with three strikeouts. While Tampa Bay began its eight-game road trip with a bang, Toronto has dropped four in a row overall and five of the nine meetings in 2016 between the American League East rivals. Jose Bautista, who belted a two-run homer in Tuesday's setback, is appealing the one-game suspension he received from Major League Baseball for his role in Sunday's brawl with Texas.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, SUN (Tampa Bay), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (0-2, 3.83 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH R.A. Dickey (2-4, 4.31)

Odorizzi has pitched well in a pair of outings versus Toronto this season, only to walk away without a decision each time. The 26-year-old allowed just one earned run in both contests against the Blue Jays and struck out a campaign-best 10 on April 5. Odorizzi's last start on Friday left plenty for which to be desired, as he matched his sum total of homers in his previous seven starts by being taken deep on three occasions and exited after four innings in a no-decision versus Oakland.

Dickey authored his best start of the season on Friday by scattering three hits and striking out six in eight innings of a 5-0 triumph over Texas. The 41-year-old's victory was his first since April 4, when he allowed three runs on six hits in five frames of a 5-3 win versus Tampa Bay. Dickey, however, needs to right his issues at home, as he's 0-3 with a gaudy 5.55 ERA in four starts (24 1/3 innings) at Rogers Centre.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria has scored at least one run in each contest of his six-game hitting streak.

      2. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson is 1-for-21 in his last five outings.

      3. Seven of Rays LF Brandon Guyer's 10 hits in his last seven games have been for extra bases (five doubles, two homers).

PREDICTION: Rays 4, Blue Jays 2

          Preview: Indians at Reds

          Current Conditions - Cincinnati

          P/SUNNY 75 °F
          Wind: WSW 12
          5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cleveland Indians (19-17) at Cincinnati Reds (15-24)
          DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 18 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
          LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians spent the first two games of their home-and-home interleague series against the instate rival Cincinnati Reds tearing the cover off the ball while putting up 28 runs in a pair of wins. The Reds will try to get their pitching sorted out when the series shifts to Cincinnati for the first of two more on Wednesday.

The Indians bashed their way to a 15-6 win in Monday’s opener that included 19 hits and home runs from Yan Gomes and Marlon Byrd. Reds left-hander John Lamb lasted only four innings while allowing seven runs in Monday’s tilt and Alfredo Simon struggled even more on Tuesday, surrendering 10 runs before being lifted after 4 1/3 frames. Cincinnati’s bullpen has drawn most of the criticism over the first six weeks of the season but the starting rotation continues to put the relievers in tough spots, and Simon’s dud pushed the Reds starter’s ERA to 4.92. Cleveland’s 28 runs mark a big departure for an offense that managed a total of 24 runs over the previous eight games – five losses.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (NA) vs. Reds LH Brandon Finnegan (1-2, 4.40 ERA)

Clevinger is getting the call and will make his major league debut after impressing the organization in spring training and at Triple-A Columbus. "We're really excited to watch him," Cleveland manager Terry Francona told reporters. "I don't think (Wednesday’s) start is going to define his career, and I do think he's still developing. But there's a lot to like with a kid with that kind of breaking ball, that kind of velocity, that kind of competitiveness.” Clevinger, 25, went 5-0 with a 3.03 ERA in seven starts for Columbus.

Finnegan is younger than Clevinger at 23 years old and is enjoying his first extended look in a major league rotation. The Texan is having some trouble going deep into games and absorbed a loss at Philadelphia last Friday while allowing three runs on four hits and five walks in four innings. Finnegan began his career in the American League Central with Kansas City and has made four relief appearances against the Indians, going 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 5 2/3 total innings.

              Preview: Nationals at Mets

              Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Washington Nationals (23-16) at New York Mets (22-16)
              DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 18 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
              LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Returning home was the perfect elixir for the New York Mets, who have a chance to move into first place in the National League East when they host the Washington Nationals on Wednesday in the second of a three-game set. The Mets moved within a half-game of division-leading Washington and snapped a four-game skid with a 2-0 victory in the series opener.

New York went with a patchwork lineup in the series opener as corner infielders David Wright and Lucas Duda were both sidelined due to back issues. Curtis Granderson, who was 2-for-19 in his previous five games, picked up the slack by reaching base on all four plate appearances, including a leadoff homer in the first inning that gave the Mets the only run they would need. The Nationals have scored two runs during their three-game losing streak and have collected a total of 17 hits during that span. Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy went 1-for-3 in his first trip back to Citi Field and saw his major league-leading batting average drop one point below .400.

              TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 1.93 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (3-2, 2.53)

Gonzalez rebounded from his worst start of the season by holding Miami to two runs (zero earned) on six hits over five innings in his second straight no-decision last time out. The 30-year-old veteran was rocked for five runs in 5 2/3 innings in his previous turn at the Chicago Cubs -- the only start in which he has allowed more than two earned runs. Gonzalez is 9-4 with a 2.66 ERA against New York, but must be wary of Juan Lagares, who is 10-for-26 against him.

Matched up against Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, Colon put the Mets in a 4-0 first-inning hole and wound up charged with five runs on seven hits over five innings to snap his five-start unbeaten string. The soon-to-be 43-year-old Dominican, who did not allow more than three runs in either of his first six starts, is 3-5 with a 3.17 ERA lifetime against the Nationals. Ben Revere has been mired in a deep slump for Washington, but he is 8-for-21 against Colon.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Mets LF Michael Conforto homered Tuesday to run his hitting streak to five games.

              2. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is 0-for-9 over the past three games.

              3. Mets LHP Steven Matz (forearm), who had to skip his last turn, will pitch a bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to start Friday.

              PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Mets 3

                  Preview: Cubs at Brewers

                  Wind: ENE 10
                  5-Day Forecast
GAME: Chicago Cubs (27-10) at Milwaukee Brewers (17-22)
                  DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 18 - 8:10 PM EST
                  WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Chicago Cubs have hit their first rough patch of the season and the team with the best record in the majors hopes to bounce back Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have dropped two straight and four of their last six after being no-hit for seven innings in a 4-2 loss in Tuesday’s opener of the three-game series.

Chicago did not lose consecutive games for the first 31 contests of the season but has done so twice in the past week. A punchless night at the plate again was the culprit Tuesday as the Cubs scored two or fewer runs for the third time in their last five games. The Brewers have received excellent pitching of late, allowing three or fewer runs in six of the past seven games, and turn to their most consistent starter in right-hander Jimmy Nelson to try to continue the trend. Cubs right-hander John Lackey looks to find some rare success on the road – he has a 2.12 ERA in four home starts this season but 5.79 in three road outings.
TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH John Lackey (4-2, 3.54 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (4-3, 3.51)
Lackey has been outstanding in three starts this month, going at least seven innings in each and allowing two or fewer earned runs each time. The 37-year-old was a tough-luck loser Wednesday in a 1-0 loss to San Diego, allowing one run and three hits over eight innings with seven strikeouts. Lackey is 5-1 with a 3.11 ERA in eight starts against the Brewers.
Nelson has posted five quality starts in his first eight outings of the season, including one last time out in a hard-luck loss to San Diego. The 26-year-old limited the Padres to two runs and five hits over eight frames for his deepest outing of the year. Nelson lost to the Cubs last month, dropping to 0-4 with a 3.35 ERA in eight games (six starts) against Chicago.

                  WALK-OFFS
                  1. Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy has homered in three straight games for the second time in his career and the first since July 6-8, 2013.
                  2. Cubs starting pitchers have gone at least five innings in 45 consecutive regular-season games dating to Sept. 27, the franchise’s longest streak since 1910.
                  3. Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun has reached base in 24 straight games for the third-longest streak of his career.

                  PREDICTION: Cubs 4, Brewers 3

The Chicago White Sox no longer possess the best record in the American League and suddenly are sliding in the wrong direction with five losses in their last six games. The White Sox aim to halt a three-game skid on Wednesday, when they host the Houston Astros in the middle contest of their three-game series.

Chicago has allowed six or more runs four times during the rough stretch, including Tuesday's opener in which Houston prevailed 6-5 in 11 innings. The White Sox expect to have Todd Frazier (illness) back in the lineup after he missed his first start of the season in the opener. Astros third baseman Colin Moran and outfielder Tony Kemp will make their first major-league starts on Wednesday - Kemp made his debut on Tuesday by pinch-running and scoring. Moran was the sixth overall pick in 2013 by Miami and traded to Houston a year later in a deal that involved pitcher Jarred Cosart, while the versatile 5-foot-6 Kemp was selected in the fifth round in 2013 by the Astros.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Doug Fister (3-3, 4.22 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Mat Latos (5-0, 3.40)

Fister received a no-decision against Cleveland in his last turn after winning his previous two decisions. He has allowed six runs over 20 innings in the three starts and has walked just three batters during the stretch after issuing a career-high seven in a loss to Seattle on April 25. Fister is 2-4 with a 3.72 ERA in nine career starts against the White Sox and has struggled with Melky Cabrera (5-for-14) while shutting down Austin Jackson (2-for-14).

Latos has started to wilt, allowing 13 earned runs over his last three starts after giving up just two in his first four turns. He gave up five runs, seven hits and a season-high five walks in a no-decision against Texas in his last turn. Latos is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in seven career starts against the Astros and has experienced difficulties with Colby Rasmus (6-for-11) and Jose Altuve (4-for-8).

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Slumping Astros CF Carlos Gomez (ribs), who is batting just .182 with no homers and 46 strikeouts in 132 at-bats, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.

                      2. Jackson is 2-for-13 with eight strikeouts over his last four games.

                      3. Houston DH Evan Gattis, recalled from Double-A Corpus Christi prior to Tuesday's contest, hit the decisive two-run homer in the 11th while rookie 1B Tyler White went deep twice for the first time in his career.

                          Preview: Rockies at Cardinals

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Colorado Rockies (20-18) at St. Louis Cardinals (20-19)
                          DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 18 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

The Colorado Rockies have a chance to register their first series victory in St. Louis since 2009 when they play the middle contest of a three-game set against the Cardinals on Wednesday. The Rockies kicked off a nine-game road trip with a 3-1 victory Monday to stretch their winning streak to a season-high five games.

Colorado improved to 12-8 away from home as it attempts to reverse an ugly trend that has seen the club lose 109 road games in the previous two seasons. Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado delivered a run-scoring single Tuesday to give him 10 RBIs in his last 11 games away from home. Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, who entered the series batting .397 against his former club, is hitless in his last three games (0-for-12) after going 0-for-4 on Tuesday. St. Louis, which has won six straight series versus the Rockies, sends struggling Adam Wainwright to the mound to oppose left-hander Chris Rusin on Wednesday.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Chris Rusin (1-1, 4.85 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (3-3, 6.80)

Rusin followed three consecutive strong outings out of the bullpen with five scoreless innings of one-hit ball at Arizona in his first start of the season, but has regressed in his last two turns. He was knocked around for four runs on 10 hits by the Diamondbacks last time out after getting shelled for seven runs and 13 hits at San Francisco in his previous start. He was hit hard in a start at St. Louis on July 30, 2015, giving up six runs on 10 hits.

Wainwright stretched his unbeaten streak to four starts last time out against the Los Angeles Angels, but was far from impressive and lasted only five innings and surrendered seven runs on 11 hits. The 34-year-old Wainwright has yet to allow fewer than three runs or register more the five strikeouts over his eight starts. Wainwright has dominated the Rockies with a 7-1 mark and 1.45 ERA but must be wary of Charlie Blackmon, who is 4-for-7 against him.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. Rockies RHP Jake McGee has allowed four hits while notching six saves in the last 10 days.

                          2. Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk's RBI single Tuesday was the team's major league-best 24th pinch hit.

                          3. Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez is 2-for-20 over the past six games.

                          PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Rockies 4

GAME: Boston Red Sox (24-15) at Kansas City Royals (19-19)

After calming an increasing unrest among a legion of Boston Red Sox fans, ace David Price looks to build on the success of his last start when he faces the host Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in the second game of a day-night doubleheader. The twin bill was necessitated by a rainout of Monday's series opener.

Price has lost only once in six decisions, but his bloated 6.00 ERA is not exactly what the Red Sox had in mind when they inked the left-hander to a seven-year, $217 million deal in the offseason. Boston lost for only the second time in nine games despite another big night from third baseman Travis Shaw, who is 14-for-31 with three homers and 12 RBIs in his last eight games. The Nos. 7-9 hitters in Kansas City's lineup combined for eight hits in Tuesday's 8-4 victory, capped by Paulo Orlando's three-hit, four-RBI night. Edinson Volquez will oppose Price in Game 1 on Wednesday while Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy faces knuckleballer Steven Wright in the opener.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (5-1, 6.00 ERA) vs. Royals RH Edinson Volquez (4-3, 3.51)

After getting blasted for 12 runs and 15 hits by the New York Yankees over his previous two starts, Price returned to form with a dominant outing versus Houston, striking out 12 while allowing one run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Price, who has shown an alarming inability to escape trouble, has permitted at least five runs in four of his previous six turns. Price is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six appearances (five starts) versus Kansas City.

Volquez snapped a three-start losing streak with a stellar performance in his last outing, limiting Atlanta to one run on six hits over seven innings and not walking a batter for only the second time. He has a pair of rocky starts on the road during his three-game skid, giving up 13 runs and 19 hits over 9 1/3 innings in losses at Cleveland and the Los Angeles Angels. Volquez has been outstanding at home with a 3-1 record and 1.35 ERA in five starts.

                              WALK-OFFS

                              1. Boston has homered in 17 straight contests, the longest string since the franchise-record 19-game run in 1996.

                              2. Royals 1B Eric Hosmer is 9-for-23 during a six-game hitting streak.

                              3. Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts has his safely in 11 straight games while 1B Hanley Ramirez is riding an eight-game streak.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, Royals 3
