    Preview: Giants at Diamondbacks

    Current Conditions - Phoenix

    P/SUNNY 70 °F
    Wind: SW 16
    5-Day Forecast
GAME: San Francisco Giants (19-18) at Arizona Diamondbacks (17-20)
    DATE/TIME: Friday, May 13 - 9:40 PM EST
    WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
    LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants aim for their third straight victory when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday for the second contest of their four-game set. San Francisco opened the series with a 4-2 triumph, extending its road winning streak to four games.

Brandon Belt drove in a run for the Giants with a single, giving him a hit in nine of his last 11 contests. Arizona is looking to avoid a third consecutive overall defeat and fifth in a row at home. Jean Segura collected three hits for the Diamondbacks while Brandon Drury notched two for his fifth multi-hit performance of the month. Paul Goldschmidt's mini-surge came to an end Thursday as he was 0-for-4 after a three-game series at Colorado in which he went 5-for-12 with three RBIs.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (4-2, 3.17 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Shelby Miller (1-3, 7.36)

Samardzija was a hard-luck loser Sunday as he allowed only two runs and struck out nine for the second straight outing while throwing 123 pitches in 7 2/3 innings against Colorado. The 31-year-old native of Indiana has bounced back from an off-year with the Chicago White Sox, yielding three runs or fewer in six of his seven starts while working seven or more frames four times. Samardzija has yet to defeat Arizona in his career, going 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA in nine meetings (four starts).

Unlike his counterpart, Miller has struggled in his first year with his new team, failing to last four innings on three occasions — one as a result of an injury — and issuing four or more walks three times in his seven starts. The 25-year-old Texan is coming off his best performance of the season, however, as he allowed two runs and four hits over six frames in a victory at Atlanta on Saturday. Miller is 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA in five career starts against San Francisco.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Giants OF Angel Pagan is expected to be in the lineup Friday after missing 11 games with a strained left hamstring.

    2. Segura is riding a 10-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in a career-high 19 consecutive contests.

    3. San Francisco recalled RHP Clayton Blackburn from Triple-A Sacramento prior to the series opener and optioned OF Jarrett Parker to the River Cats.

    PREDICTION: Giants 7, Diamondbacks 3

        Preview: Angels at Mariners

        Current Conditions - Seattle

        CLOUDY 57 °F
        Wind: CLM 0
        5-Day Forecast
GAME: Los Angeles Angels (13-21) at Seattle Mariners (21-13)
        DATE/TIME: Friday, May 13 - 10:10 PM EST
        WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
        LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Angels attempt to bounce back from a disastrous homestand when they begin a five-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Friday. Los Angeles lost every contest on its six-game stretch at home, concluding the dismal run with Thursday's 12-10 setback against St. Louis.

Albert Pujols was one of six Angels to record two hits, with one being a two-run blast in the ninth inning that ended his nine-game drought. Seattle looks to remain perfect on its six-game homestand after sweeping a three-game set from Tampa Bay earlier in the week. Robinson Cano enters Friday's contest with an 11-game hitting streak during which he has gone 22-for-49 (.449) with four home runs and nine RBIs. Seattle took two of three from the Angels on the road last month and is 7-0-1 in the last eight series between the American League West rivals.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Nick Tropeano (1-2, 3.69 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Nathan Karns (3-1, 3.38)

Tropeano recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts but yielded three runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, falling to 0-2 in five starts since winning his season debut. The 25-year-old native of West Islip, New York, allowed two runs or fewer in each of his first four starts before surrendering eight over 10 1/3 frames in his last two turns and has yet to last six innings this campaign. Tropeano has yet to lose to Seattle, going 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA in three career starts.

Karns settled for a no-decision at Houston on Saturday after giving up just one run and six hits while striking out a season-high nine in 6 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old from Pennsylvania has yielded a total of four runs over his last three outings after surrendering four or more in two of his first three turns. Karns made two starts against Los Angeles while with Tampa Bay last year, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Angels SS Cliff Pennington exited Thursday's game with left hamstring cramps after going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

        2. Seattle is 16-1 when scoring four or more runs and 5-1 in extra innings this season.

        3. Pujols' blast made him the ninth active player in the majors to have hit at least one home run against all 30 teams.

        PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Angels 3

            Wind: S 10
            5-Day Forecast
GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (19-16) at Los Angeles Dodgers (18-17)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, May 13 - 10:10 PM EST

Former Texas A&M teammates Michael Wacha and Ross Stripling pitch against each other for the first time as major leaguers when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Wacha and the Cardinals have begun a six-game Southern California road trip in strong fashion, completing a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday with a 12-10 victory.

The 24-year-old Wacha and 26-year-old Stripling are former roommates from their tenures with the Aggies, and the hurlers engaged in trash talk early in the week before temporarily putting their friendship on pause until after Friday's game. The topic of facing one another in the big leagues did arise in college and it is about to become reality. "I don't remember a specific time talking about it, but it was like, 'Can you imagine if we get drafted and pitch against each other in the big leagues?'" Stripling told reporters. "And now it’s going to happen, which is pretty crazy." The Dodgers blanked the New York Mets on Thursday behind Clayton Kershaw's three-hitter to split a four-game series and win for the fourth time in six contests.

            TV:
10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (2-3, 3.12 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Ross Stripling (0-2, 3.82)

Wacha has lost three consecutive starts and hasn't won since defeating San Diego on April 23. He has allowed four home runs during the three setbacks after keeping the ball in the park in his first four turns. Wacha is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers and has struggled to retire Justin Turner (3-for-5) while shutting down Joc Pederson (1-for-7).

Stripling was pulled after 7 1/3 no-hit innings in his major-league debut and remains winless as he takes the mound for the seventh time. He allowed just one run and one hit in six frames against Toronto in his last turn but settled for a no-decision. Stripling has not fared well at Dodger Stadium, going 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA and a .303 batting average against in three home starts.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Cardinals OF Matt Holliday matched his career high of four hits as the DH on Thursday and went deep twice for his second multi-homer performance of the season and the 21st of his career.

            2. Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez has gone 18 consecutive games without hitting a home run.

            3. St. Louis 3B Matt Carpenter belted a three-run shot on Thursday, has recorded two hits in four of his last five games and is batting .341 with four homers this month.
