NHL notebook: Bruins F Rinaldo suspended five games
    By The Sports Xchange

Boston Bruins forward Zac Rinaldo has been suspended for five games without pay due to an illegal check to the head, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning when Rinaldo delivered the check to the head of Tampa Bay forward Cedric Paquette. Rinaldo received a minor penalty for the first-period incident.
He drew the suspension for being a repeat offender and will forfeit $51,829.25. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Boston also recalled forward Noel Acciari from the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. Acciari, 24, had 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 42 games for Providence.

---The Nashville Predators agreed on a two-year contract extension with forward Miikka Salomaki, the club announced.
The deal is worth $1.225 million, according to the Predators. Salomaki will receive $575,000 next season and $650,000 in 2017-18.
Salomaki, 23, has seven points (four goals, three assists) in 45 games this season.

---The Buffalo Sabres recalled forwards Daniel Catenacci and Cal O'Reilly from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, the team announced.
Catenacci played three games for the Sabres earlier this season without scoring a point. He has 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 41 games at Rochester. O'Reilly has one assist in five games with Buffalo this season. He had 28 points (six goals, 22 assists) in 44 games for Rochester.
Buffalo also sent forward Justin Bailey to Rochester. Bailey was scoreless in eight games with the Sabres.

---The Calgary Flames assigned defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon to the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League.
Wotherspoon, 22, played in six games for the Flames and didn't score. He has four assists in 40 games for Stockton this season.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
    by Alan Matthews

The NHL trade deadline is no different than those in Major League Baseball or the NBA: the rich get richer and the bad teams throw in the towel and accrue assets for the future. Can I tell you with certainty who will win the Stanley Cup after Monday's NHL trade deadline passed? I can't, but I can tell you which teams to bet against the rest of the season.

But let's start with the winners from the deadline, and by winners I mean just for this season, which have to be the Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche.

The Caps are +315 favorites to win the Stanley Cup. They sent Brooks Laich, the team's longest-tenured player, to Toronto for forward Daniel Winnik. Laich used to be a good player but is breaking down and had just one goal and six assists this season, playing mostly on the fourth line. Winnik ranked second among NHL forwards in shorthanded time on ice per game last season (3:16) and set career highs in assists (25) and points (34). This year, he had four goals and 10 assists for the sorry Leafs. He's an upgrade even though Laich was hugely respected in the Caps' locker room.

The Blackhawks, who are +625 second-favorites for a fourth title this decade and beat the visiting Capitals in a potential Finals preview on Sunday, probably are the most improved team. GM Stan Bowman was able to keep the team's top young players yet still able to bring back forward Andrew Ladd, a key member of the 2010 Cup team, as well as forwards Tomas Fleischmann and Dale Weise. They also swapped defensemen with the Kings: Rob Scuderi for Christian Ehrhoff. Ladd, acquired from Carolina, had 17 goals and 18 assists this season. He was a very popular player on that 2009-10 Hawks team but was part of the salary-cap purge after winning the Cup. Ladd will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and will cost too much to be re-signed. He had an assist Sunday in his Chicago debut. Weise had 14 goals and 12 assists in Montreal and Fleischmann 10 goals and 10 assists with the Habs. Both those guys will be free agents after the year as well.

The Rangers, +1600 to win the Cup, got perhaps the biggest "name" in Eric Staal from the Hurricanes. Carolina's former captain had spent his entire 12-year career with the club. The four-time All-Star has 10 goals and 23 assists. He joins brother Marc on the Blueshirts. Staal will be a free agent after the season. Noticing a pattern here?

The Panthers added some scoring punch in acquiring wingers Jiri Hudler from the Calgary Flames and Teddy Purcell from the Edmonton Oilers as well as defenseman Jakub Kindl from Detroit. Florida is +1500 for the Cup.

Anaheim landed forward Brandon Pirri from Florida and winger Jamie McGinn from Buffalo. Pirri has only played in 101 games since the start of the 2014-15 season but he has scored 33 goals in those games. He's out with an ankle injury right now. The Ducks are +1400 for the Cup. Colorado (+5000) landed winger Mikkel Boedker from the Coyotes. After Ladd, he was arguably the top rental forward on the market. He had 13 goals and 26 assists with 18 of those points on the power play. The Avs are simply battling to get into the playoffs.

Which teams are worse after the deadline? No question it's Arizona, Toronto, Calgary and Carolina. Those four all loaded up on young players and draft picks in their moves and that may well work out in the long term, but they are clearly in full tank mode the rest of this season. Bet against those clubs accordingly.

    This Week's Games To Watch

Chicago at Detroit, Wednesday: One bad thing about realignment a couple of years ago was that it hurt this rivalry, one of the best in the NHL. With the Red Wings in the East, they face the Blackhawks now just twice a year. Chicago's Kane had his sixth game-winning goal of the season during Sunday's 3-2 win over Washington. That ties a career high. Jonathan Toews snapped his eight-game goal drought in the win. Newly acquired Weise and Fleischmann are expected to play alongside Teuvo Teravainen (the key young player Bowman was able to keep) on Chicago's third line. Weise wasn't able to debut Sunday because of some immigration problems. I'm a bit surprised the Red Wings were largely quiet ahead of the deadline. This game is nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network and the teams play again Sunday in Chicago.

Anaheim at Los Angeles, Saturday: The Ducks enter the week on an NHL-high eight-game winning streak and are two points behind the crosstown Kings in the Pacific Division. The Kings also made a move at the deadline, getting winger Kris Versteeg from Carolina. L.A. needed some forward depth because it has lost Marian Gaborik to injury. Gaborik will reportedly miss 10-12 weeks with a knee injury. Versteeg had 33 points (11 goals) with the Hurricanes and has plenty of postseason experience as well from his time in Chicago. The Kings moved Gaborik to long-term injured reserve to absorb Versteeg's salary. The Ducks lead the season series with the Kings 2-1 and beat visiting L.A. 4-2 on Sunday to snap the Kings' four-game winning streak. Corey Perry had his ninth career hat trick for the Ducks. The Kings haven't finished first in their division since the 1990-91 season, believe it or not. The Ducks trailed the Kings by 15 points on Jan. 2.

            Preview: Toronto at Washington
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, District Of Columbia
The league-leading Washington Capitals continue their quest for the second Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history when they face off against the NHL-worst Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in the middle contest of their three-game homestand. Washington, which finished first overall in 2009-10, is the only team with at least 90 points and is four away from the century mark after rallying from a two-goal deficit to post a 3-2 triumph over Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
Evgeny Kuznetsov has been on a tear of late, collecting seven tallies and 21 assists in his last 21 games to reach the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career and take the team lead with 65 points. Toronto is counting the days until the season ends as it has been in a freefall since bridging December and January with a three-game winning streak, going 5-15-3 to drop into the league basement with 52 points. The Maple Leafs have lost six of their last seven contests, scoring fewer than three goals in five of the setbacks, while leading scorer Leo Komarov has gone four straight games and seven of his last nine without a point. Washington is hoping to complete a sweep of the three-game season series after posting hard-fought victories at home Nov. 7 and in Toronto three weeks later.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), CSN-DC (Washington)
ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (21-30-10): Newcomers Brooks Laich and defenseman Connor Carrick already have the chance to stick it to their former team as they were acquired from Washington on Sunday for Daniel Winnik. “I’d had a conversation with (Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan) and conveyed that I wanted to be part of it and wanted to go after a Cup, and unfortunately, that didn’t work out,” Laich told Toronto’s website. “But the flip side of that (is), this is a great opportunity here.” Nazem Kadri had recorded six points during his last five contests after scoring the lone goal in Monday’s 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay to end his nine-game drought.
ABOUT THE CAPITALS (46-12-4): Captain Alex Ovechkin has gone two straight games without a goal for the first time since Jan. 14 and 16. The 30-year-old superstar netted 14 tallies in 15 contests between his mini-droughts to reach the 40-goal plateau for the third consecutive season and eighth time in 11 NHL campaigns. Defenseman Mike Weber, who was acquired from Buffalo on Feb. 23, made his debut with Washington on Tuesday and recorded three hits, a game-high five blocks and a plus-1 rating in 12 minutes, 24 seconds of ice time.
            OVERTIME
            1. Ovechkin was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Month of February after registering 12 goals and four assists in 13 games.
            2. Toronto, which has lost five of its last six road games, follows Wednesday’s matchup with a stretch during which it plays 10 of 12 contests at home.
            3. Washington G Braden Holtby is one victory shy of matching his career high of 41 set last season.
PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Maple Leafs 2

              Preview: Chicago at Detroit
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan
The surging Detroit Red Wings look to continue their good fortune against the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday when the Original Six rivals meet at Joe Louis Arena in the first of two encounters in a five-day span. Tomas Tatar had an assist as Detroit extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-2 overtime triumph over Dallas on Monday and also tallied in both victories over Chicago last season.
“The points are critical,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill told reporters. “We gotta keep doing everything we can to get as many points as we can.” While Detroit’s five-game point streak (3-0-2) has helped launched it into contention with Florida and Tampa Bay for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, the Blackhawks have their own battle on their hands with the Stars and St. Louis in the ultra-competitive Central. Chicago has been idle since posting just its third win in eight outings with a 3-2 victory over NHL-leading Washington on Sunday. Andrew Ladd, who was acquired prior to the trade deadline, notched an assist in his first game back with the Blackhawks to extend his point streak to four games (four goals, one assist).
TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TVA
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (39-20-5): Chicago’s toughest foe may very well be chemistry, as the club looks to have its new acquisitions mesh immediately with the existing group. While Ladd continued his hot stretch, Tomas Fleischmann also got acclimated with third-liners Teuvo Teravainen and Andrew Desjardins in Sunday’s win against the Capitals. There’s more in store for the Blackhawks, however, as Dale Weise is dealing with visa issues as he comes over from Montreal while veteran forward Tim Jackman is expected to see ice time following his trade from Anaheim. “I think everyone has their ideas of where the players are going to play, and as time goes on those things usually change around and I think that’s the genius of (coach) Joel (Quenneville),” Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman told CSN Chicago.
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (32-20-11): All-Star rookie forward Dylan Larkin (team-leading 19 goals) is keeping a level head as he works his way through his first scoring drought of the rookie season. “Just have to find a way to work through it and find a way to help the team, be more effective,” the 19-year-old Larkin told the Detroit Free Press after recording just one point – a goal – in his last nine games. Fellow first-year forward Andreas Athanasiou tallied twice versus Dallas to double his goal total while playing in just his 18th game of the season.
              OVERTIME
              1. Detroit G Petr Mrazek is expected to make his first career start versus Chicago.
              2. Blackhawks veteran RW Marian Hossa (lower body) did not travel with the club but Quenneville told the team’s website that “he’s close” (to returning).
              3. The Red Wings have killed off all 17 short-handed situations over the past six games.
PREDICTION: Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 2

                Preview: Montreal at Anaheim
When: 10:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                Where: Honda Center, Anaheim, California
The Anaheim Ducks are the hottest team in the NHL but that didn’t prevent them from making a few moves at the trade deadline to bolster their depth for the stretch run. Winners of eight consecutive games, the surging Ducks can pull even in points with Los Angeles atop the Pacific Division with a victory against the visiting Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.
Despite a blistering 15-1-1 stretch over the past 17 games, Anaheim acquired forwards Brandon Pirri (Florida) and Jamie McGinn (Buffalo) on Monday while trading away Patrick Maroon and Tim Jackman. McGinn is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday while Pirri (ankle) is at least 1 1/2 weeks away, according to Ducks general manager Bob Murray. “I’m comfortable with not screwing up the chemistry too much,” Murray said. “I think this works, this fits. We’re deeper and we’re very versatile.” Sitting in 13th place in the Eastern Conference, the Canadiens made a minor deal Monday by acquiring Stefan Matteau from New Jersey in exchange for fellow forward Devante Smith-Pelly. Montreal saw its four-game point streak (3-0-1) end with a thud in a 6-2 drubbing at San Jose and now faces a grueling back-to-back against Anaheim and Los Angeles.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, RDS (Montreal), FSN West (Anaheim)
ABOUT THE CANADIENS (30-28-5): The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Matteau, a first-round draft pick in 2012, had only one point in 20 games with the Devils, but Montreal hopes the 22-year-old will provide a physical presence along with waiver-wire acquisition Mike Brown, who made his debut with the club Monday night. “He’s going to bring energy,” coach Michel Therrien said of Brown, who has 751 penalty minutes in 394 NHL games. Rookie Mike Condon was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week on Monday in the wake of a 2-0-1 stretch, but he was blitzed for a season high-tying six goals by San Jose.
ABOUT THE DUCKS (34-19-8): One of the major reasons for Anaheim’s turnaround has been the play of captain Ryan Getzlaf, who on Tuesday was named the NHL’s First Star of the Month after registering six goals and 14 assists while powering the Ducks to a 12-1-1 mark in February. “Our team in general has turned it around,” said Getzlaf, who posted a plus-13 rating for the month. “We climbed back into contention and we’re playing good hockey.” Forward Shawn Horcoff, suspended for 20 games for taking a banned substance, was back at practice Tuesday and is eligible to rejoin the lineup on March 11.
                OVERTIME
                1. The Ducks have scored at least one power-play goal in each game during their winning streak, converting on 13-of-29 chances.
                2. Canadiens F Brendan Gallagher has scored three goals in the past four games.
                3. Ducks G Frederik Andersen has not lost in regulation since Dec. 21, going 11-0-2 in his last 15 appearances.
                PREDICTION: Ducks 4, Canadiens 2

                  Grand Salami – March
                  By VI News
The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on ‘over’ or ‘under’ the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed ‘over/under’ odds for each game on that particular day.
Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.
*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the ‘over/under’ for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.
