      Previews, Streaks, Tips, Notes

Detroit Pistons at San Antonio Spurs March 2, 8:00 EST

After a brutal eight game road swing (7-1, 4-4 ATS) the Spurs return to the AT&T Center in San Antonio where they've enjoyed 'Home Cookin' recording a perfect 28-0 (15-17-1 ATS) record this season. Not difficult making a case for San Antonio on its own court. However, you do bet Spurs at some risk. Pistons have been firing on all cylinders winning/covering four straight including a pair vs Raptors, Cavaliers the top two clubs in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, Pistons have a habit of cashing tickets in Alamo City (7-2 ATS).

            Preview: Chicago At Orlando
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
            Where: Amway Center, Orlando, Florida
The Chicago Bulls have fallen out of playoff position after three straight losses and look to begin their turnaround when they visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The Bulls, who have been one of the best defensive teams in the league in past seasons, have allowed 100 or more points in 14 consecutive games after a 129-111 loss at Miami on Tuesday.
The Bulls have not been able to compensate for the loss of injured All-Star Jimmy Butler (knee) and Nikola Mirotic (appendix) while Derrick Rose (hamstring) returned from a three-game absence to score 17 on Tuesday. “We’ve been talking about (playing better) for awhile,” Rose told reporters. “I’m just wondering when we’re going to say, ‘Enough.’” The Magic have not been able to make up much ground by going 5-5 over the last 10 games after a 121-108 loss at Dallas on Tuesday. Orlando is 4 ½ games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as it faces two straight at home before a four-game Western road trip.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Florida (Orlando)
ABOUT THE BULLS (30-29): Taj Gibson added his name to the injured list for Chicago on Tuesday with a tight hamstring and the power forward will be re-evaluated before the matchup against the Magic. The return of Rose was a big boost for the Bulls, but center Pau Gasol has been a major factor while averaging 15.8 points, 14.3 rebounds and eight assists over the past four contests. Doug McDermott continues to step up his production, providing 18.2 points per contest over his past six outings.
ABOUT THE MAGIC (26-33): Orlando had put itself in playoff position with solid defense, but has struggled recently and allowed an average of 114.1 points over the last seven games. Nikola Vucevic has been the most consistent force for the Magic, averaging 21.4 points in February and scoring 18 in the loss at Dallas. Victor Oladipo made just 3-of-10 from the field Tuesday while newly acquired forward Ersan Ilyasova had 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his best performance since being obtained at the trade deadline.
            BUZZER-BEATERS
            1. Chicago’s rookie F Bobby Portis continues to make progress, averaging 10.5 points and 8.8 rebounds the last eight contests.
            2. Orlando G Evan Fournier (wrist), who is third on the team at 14.2 points per game, missed the last two games and is questionable for Wednesday.
            3. The Bulls have won five of the last seven meetings, including a 92-87 victory at home on Nov. 1.
            PREDICTION: Magic 100, Bulls 98

              Preview: Charlotte At Philadelphia
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Charlotte Hornets are racking up victories and moving up the Eastern Conference standings, and look to continue their success when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Charlotte has won nine of its past 12 games after clobbering the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday and is in possession of sixth place in the tightly bunched East.
The Hornets showed no mercy against the struggling Suns and led by as many as 43 points before settling for a 126-92 home victory and aim to avoid a letdown against the NBA’s worst team. “What we can’t do is go out and get too comfortable,” center Al Jefferson told reporters after the win over Phoenix. “We said this game would mean nothing if we go to Philly and lay an egg. Every game is very important, especially going down the stretch this late in the season.” The 76ers have lost nine consecutive games and are allowing an unsightly 116.2 points per game during the stretch. Philadelphia hopes to have rookie center Jahlil Okafor (shin) back in the lineup after he missed Monday’s 116-108 road loss to the Washington Wizards.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), CSN Philadelphia
ABOUT THE HORNETS (31-28): The contest with Philadelphia is one of just two road games during a 12-game stretch that began with the Phoenix contest and Charlotte is well aware it can strengthen its playoff positioning. “We know how important these games are,” standout guard Kemba Walker told reporters. “We want to take care of things at home. We’ve improved a lot on the road, and that’s helped us. But we’ve been playing great at home throughout the season, so we know how important it is.” Walker was superb with 26 points and nine assists against the Suns and has scored 20 or more points in nine of the past 10 games.
ABOUT THE 76ERS (8-52): Okafor averaged 23.5 points over the previous two games before surprisingly being held out against the Wizards as coach Brett Brown wanted to prevent him from perhaps missing multiple games. “We’re just trying to be smart with him,” Brown told reporters. “We have to find something a little bit different in ways to put points on the board.” Okafor has missed seven games during a fine rookie season in which he is averaging 17.5 and 7.0 rebounds.
              BUZZER BEATERS
              1. Jefferson had 26 points and 10 rebounds as the Hornets rolled to a 113-88 home victory over the 76ers on Nov. 20.
              2. Charlotte backup PF/C Spencer Hawes (lower back) will miss his seventh consecutive game.
              3. Philadelphia PG Ish Smith is averaging 21 points and seven assists over the past two games.
              PREDICTION: Hornets 119, 76ers 106

                Preview: Portland At Boston
When: 7:30 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                Where: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts
The Boston Celtics stayed afloat early in the season by thriving on the road, but they’ve turned themselves into contenders in the Eastern Conference on the strength of a dominant stretch at home. The Celtics look to keep alive their string of success at TD Garden when they host the red-hot Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.
Boston has won 11 in a row at home – its longest run in three years – and the streak has featured several gritty efforts, much like the one that resulted in a 100-95 triumph over Utah on Monday. “We’ve been doing a great job when it’s crunch time of finding the right shot,” forward Jae Crowder told reporters after scoring a game-high 22 points. “That takes lot of togetherness, and I think we’ve shown that. We gotta continue to show that to win games.” The streak will be tested by the Blazers, whose 104-85 rout in New York on Tuesday was their third straight to begin a six-game trip and their 14th in 16 games. The team’s remarkable turnaround from an 11-20 start has pushed it into a tie for sixth in the West.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, CSN Northwest (Portland), CSN New England (Boston)
ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (33-28): Damian Lillard has hit the 30-point mark eight times in nine games and wasted little time announcing his presence in the win over the Knicks by scoring 24 in the opening half. Running mate C.J. McCollum took over from there with 21 second-half points as Portland topped the 100-point mark for the ninth straight time – its longest such run since Nov. 23-Dec. 30, 2013. Gerald Henderson had been providing some support for the Blazers’ star duo but was held to six points – his second single-digit showing in a span of 13 games – on 2-of-8 shooting.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (36-25): Coach Brad Stevens and his players talk often of their desire to dominate on the defensive end, and it appears as if they’ve ended a recent slump in that regard. After giving up more than 100 points in eight straight games – easily the squad’s longest streak of the season – the Celtics have limited the last two opponents to an average of 92.5 and a combined field-goal percentage of 39.4. Crowder is averaging 20.8 points on 57.7 percent shooting over the course of a four-game hot stretch.
                BUZZER BEATERS
                1. Stevens and Portland coach Terry Stotts were named coaches of the month in their respective conferences for February.
                2. Lillard has made all 45 of his foul shots in his last five contests.
                3. Celtics reserve C Tyler Zeller has scored in double digits in two straight games for only the second time this season.
PREDICTION: Celtics 108, Trail Blazers 104

                  Preview: Utah At Toronto
When: 7:30 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario
The Toronto Raptors squandered an opportunity to gain another game on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the fight for first place in the Eastern Conference over the weekend while sitting All-Star Kyle Lowry. The point guard expects to be back in the lineup when the Raptors return home to host the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
Lowry went for a career-high 43 points and buried the game-winning jumper in a 99-97 win over Cleveland on Friday but was given a day off to rest on Sunday at Detroit, and Toronto went on to suffer a 114-101 loss while the Cavaliers, who own a two-game lead in the East, were in the process of losing at Washington. “Coach kind of decided he wanted to give me rest and I said, ‘Okay, cool,’” Lowry told reporters. “I’m not going to fight certain things. Of course I want to be out there, but it’s long term.” The Jazz don’t have any room to rest players as they fight to stay alive at the bottom of the Western Conference playoff picture. Utah dropped a back-and-forth contest at Boston 100-95 on Monday in the opener of a four-game road trip and has lost three straight and six of eight to fall into ninth place in the West.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ROOT (Utah), TSN (Toronto)
ABOUT THE JAZZ (28-31): Utah is just 9-19 away from home and will play 10 of its first 14 games in March away from Salt Lake City. The Jazz closed out February by failing to come up with the shots they needed down the stretch at Boston. “It’s kind of the same stuff,” Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. “We played really hard. We’ve got to make some shots. To shoot 37 percent and still come down to a single-possession game speaks to how hard we’re playing defensively. … They made a shot down the stretch and we didn’t. The game can be that simple sometimes.”
ABOUT THE RAPTORS (39-19): Toronto had a four-game winning streak come to an end with Sunday’s loss as Cory Joseph scored 10 points while starting in place of Lowry. The biggest difference came on the defensive end, where the Raptors allowed the Pistons to shoot 57.7 percent from the field. “This (Detroit) team is playing well but we didn’t come out with any defensive disposition whatsoever,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey told reporters. “And this league will hand it right back to you. We’re not good enough. We’re not good enough to do it with Kyle or without Kyle when you come out without that defensive focus.”
                  BUZZER BEATERS
                  1. Jazz F Trey Lyles scored 18 points on Monday after totaling 16 in his previous seven games.
                  2. Toronto waived F Anthony Bennett on Monday and signed F Jason Thompson, who had been waived last week by the Golden State Warriors.
                  3. Utah snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with a 93-89 home win on Nov. 18.
                  PREDICTION: Raptors 101, Jazz 92

                    Preview: Washington At Minnesota
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                    Where: Target Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Washington Wizards are taking advantage of their recent schedule in an effort to get back into the postseason race in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards will try to grab another win at the expense of a sub-.500 opponent when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
Washington sandwiched a win over a LeBron James-less Cleveland Cavaliers squad around two victories over the NBA-worst Philadelphia 76ers to pull within 1 1/2 games of the No. 8 spot in the East. The Wizards will play five of their next six on the road, including a trip to face a Cleveland team that will presumably have James available on Friday, as they try to keep pace with the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls scrambling for the final few playoff spots in the East. The Timberwolves aren’t facing any sort of postseason pressure but do seem to be growing behind a host of talented young players. Minnesota’s youth guided it to a win at New Orleans on Saturday but could not find the energy to make it back-to-back victories and fell 128-101 at Dallas on Sunday.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSN Mid-Atlantic (Washington), FSN North (Minnesota)
ABOUT THE WIZARDS (29-30): Washington is hoping for a better effort on the road trip after squandering all of a 14-point second-half lead against the 76ers on Monday and falling behind by six points in the fourth quarter before putting it together down the stretch and earning a 116-108 win. “You never apologize for a win,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman told reporters. “We’ve lost games like this. We’ve got to learn from it.” Washington got a boost from power forward Markieff Morris, who moved into the starting lineup on Monday for the first time since joining the team at the trade deadline and collected 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (19-41): Minnesota is fully handing the team over to the youngsters and is dealing with the associated growing pains. The Timberwolves shot 50 percent from the field and committed 11 turnovers against New Orleans but dropped to 37.8 percent and up to 15 turnovers the next night. “It was a tough night, and that has a lot to do with fatigue,” center Gorgui Dieng told reporters. “We tried to push it, but we were just tired. Everybody plays back-to-backs. You fight through it. … All I can do is make sure I’m ready, and whenever I hear my name called, I’ll be on the floor and do my job.”
                    BUZZER BEATERS
                    1. Timberwolves rookie C Karl-Anthony Towns recorded a double-double in 15 of the last 18 games.
                    2. Washington PG John Wall is averaging 29 points on 21-of-37 from the field in the last two games.
                    3. The home team has taken each of the last six in the series, with Minnesota earning a 97-77 win on its home floor last season.
                    PREDICTION: Timberwolves 111, Wizards 110

                      Preview: New Orleans At Houston
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                      Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas
The Houston Rockets are not playing like a team that wants to hang on to the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, but no other team looks like it’s ready to step up and challenge the position. The New Orleans Pelicans will take their shot at closing the gap on eighth place when they visit the Rockets on Wednesday.
Houston has dropped two in a row and six of eight to fall two games under .500 but remains a half-game clear of the similarly floundering Utah Jazz for the No. 8 spot. The Pelicans are five games behind the Rockets but believe they are still in the race if they can put together a good stretch. “I think we’ve played pretty good basketball,” New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. “I still say that in order for us to get in the playoff race, we’re going to have to have a stretch where we win eight out of 10, or six in a row, or something like that. We’ve yet to do that. Time is very short. It’s running out. (But) as long as we’re not mathematically eliminated, we have something to play for.” The Pelicans are hoping to have a healthy Anthony Davis down the stretch and held the All-Star forward out of a loss at Minnesota on Saturday and practice on Monday to rest a sprained right big toe.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN New Orleans, ROOT (Houston)
ABOUT THE PELICANS (25-35): New Orleans is 1-6 in the seven games Davis missed this season and lost three more in which he left early due to injury. “We’re expecting him to play,” Gentry told reporters on Monday. “Obviously we kept him out of practice today, but everything seems to be OK. It will be a game-time decision, but I’m anticipating him playing.” Davis scored 30 points in a win over Oklahoma City on Thursday and was missed in Saturday’s 112-110 loss to the Timberwolves despite Ryan Anderson’s 31 points and 14 rebounds.
ABOUT THE ROCKETS (29-31): Houston’s up-and-down defensive effort hit a low point on Monday, when the Milwaukee Bucks shot 59.3 percent from the field and went 8-of-15 from 3-point range in a 128-121 win over the Rockets. Houston ranks in the bottom quarter of the league in defensive field-goal percentage, allowing opponents to go off at 46.6 percent, and are near the bottom in scoring defense as well (yielding 107.1 points). The Rockets are making a brief stop at home before hitting the road for five straight against Eastern Conference teams.
                      BUZZER BEATERS
                      1. Pelicans G Eric Gordon (finger) returned from a 16-point absence on Saturday and poured in 31 points.
                      2. Rockets F Trevor Ariza is 15-of-32 from 3-point range in five games since the All-Star break.
                      3. Houston has taken two of the first three meetings this season, including a 112-111 win at New Orleans on Jan. 25.
                      PREDICTION: Pelicans 120, Rockets 115

                        Preview: Detroit At San Antonio
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas
The San Antonio Spurs went 7-1 on the annual “Rodeo Road Trip” and play at home for the first time since Feb. 6 when the Detroit Pistons come to town on Tuesday. San Antonio is 28-0 at home this season but could be tested by a suddenly hot Detroit team that has matched its season high of four straight wins.
The Spurs reached 50 victories for a record 17th consecutive season when they posted a 104-94 win over the Houston Rockets on Saturday to complete the road trip. “Definitely 7-1, that’s pretty impressive,” point guard Tony Parker told reporters. “We just have to keep it going. It’s been a while I think since we did that good on the road trip; not even just the wins, but the way we played defensively and stuff like that.” Detroit was struggling with five straight defeats – it allowed 59 points to New Orleans star Anthony Davis in the final loss – before putting together the solid stretch that includes wins over Cleveland and Toronto, and now gets to face the Spurs. “San Antonio’s a decent home team,” Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy deadpanned to reporters. “So that’ll be a nice challenge and then you’ve got five more road games after that in the next six. So it’s not going to get any easier and that’s OK.”
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Detroit, FSN Southwest (San Antonio)
ABOUT THE PISTONS (31-29): All-Star center Andre Drummond is on a roll with 13 consecutive double-doubles after having 15 points and 18 rebounds in Sunday’s win over Toronto. Drummond, who is averaging 16.8 points and a league-best 15 rebounds, is grabbing an average of 17 boards during Detroit’s four-game winning streak. “Andre’s back to getting huge numbers on the boards again,” Van Gundy told reporters. “He had been in a long stretch of what would be great rebounding for anyone else but was a down stretch for him. He was only getting like 12 a game, which would’ve only made him like the second- or third-best rebounder in the league. And now he’s back to 15-plus every night.”
ABOUT THE SPURS (50-9): San Antonio typically looks at the annual long trip as a time for bonding in hopes it will help lead to a deep playoff run, and veteran center Tim Duncan approved of the latest excursion. “It was a great trip for us and I think we got better on this trip as a road team and matured a little bit,” Duncan told reporters. “Obviously, our lineups are changing a little bit with our guys’ injuries. Just all around, guys stepped up and we kept our focus. All in all, a great trip for us.” Duncan also reached a milestone against the Rockets when he had one rejection to become the fifth player in NBA history to reach 3,000 career blocked shots.
                        BUZZER BEATERS
                        1. Parker scored a season-best 31 points as the Spurs recorded a 109-99 road win over the Pistons on Jan. 12.
                        2. The Spurs signed veteran PG Andre Miller and waived PG Ray McCallum.
                        3. Detroit rookie F Stanley Johnson (shoulder) could miss his fourth straight contest.

                          Preview: Indiana At Milwaukee
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The Milwaukee Bucks showed off what their offense is capable of in a thrilling performance against the Houston Rockets on Monday, now they just need to find that level consistently. The Bucks will try to make it back-to-back wins when they host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.
Milwaukee shot 59.3 percent from the field as Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded a triple-double and Jabari Parker scored a career-best 36 points. “I think I’m getting more comfortable every game, day by day,” Antetokounmpo, who has taken over point-guard duties on the starting unit, told reporters. “At the beginning it was hard; it’s a position I’m not used to. I’m trying to not label myself as a point guard. I’m just trying to run the offense and find the open guys.” The Pacers have dropped three in a row to fall into a tie for eighth place in the Eastern Conference, six games ahead of the Bucks. Indiana began a string of six of seven on the road with a 100-96 loss at Cleveland on Monday, and the lone home game in that span is against the San Antonio Spurs.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
ABOUT THE PACERS (31-29): Indiana was in the game against Charlotte, Portland and Cleveland in the last three contests and could not find a way to execute down the stretch. The Pacers were up by three points with less than 90 seconds remaining against the Cavaliers before surrendering a game-tying 3-pointer and missing three shots from within six feet in the last minute. “We played together,” forward Paul George told reporters after the loss. “We took it to this team. We played aggressive. It’s another game where we were up and for whatever reason we couldn’t finish.”
ABOUT THE BUCKS (25-35): Parker had his rookie campaign cut short and got a late start in his sophomore campaign due to a knee injury but has made up for lost time of late. The Duke product has gone for 20 or more points in four of the six games since the All-Star break, and coach Jason Kidd credits the improvement with the confidence Parker gained from playing in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend. “There was a big play (Monday) to catch and just rip and go, and get the and-one,” Kidd told reporters of Parker. “You could see his athletic ability is at an all-time high. You couldn’t tell he ever had an injury. That All-Star trip to Toronto gave him a lot of confidence.”
                          BUZZER BEATERS
                          1. Bucks G Khris Middleton is averaging 25.7 points in the last three games and is 21-of-21 from the free-throw line in that span.
                          2. Pacers SF C.J. Miles (calf) sat out the last five games and remains day-to-day.
                          3. Milwaukee earned a 120-116 win at Indiana on Dec. 31 in the most recent meeting.

                            Preview: Sacramento At Memphis
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                            Where: FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee
The Memphis Grizzlies aim to record their 12th consecutive home win over Sacramento when the Kings come in for a visit on Wednesday. Sacramento hasn’t won in Memphis since posting a 115-106 victory on Feb. 20, 2009, and suffered a 121-117 loss in its last stop on Jan. 30.
The Kings have dropped 11 of their last 15 overall games to fall out of the Western Conference playoff race and could be without All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins due to a foot injury. The status of Cousins will be established Wednesday after he suffered the injury while contributing 35 points and 12 rebounds during Monday’s 131-116 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Memphis followed up a dismal defeat to the Phoenix Suns by recording a 103-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday, and the Sacramento contest is the opener of a three-game road trip. “It’s a happy locker room,” Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said after the win in Denver. “We got 2-1 on the three-game road trip. We played with the focus that was lacking in Phoenix.”
TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSN California (Sacramento), FSN Southeast (Memphis)
ABOUT THE KINGS (24-34): Sacramento is beginning a crucial four-game road trip and not having Cousins would rate as a bad way for it to begin. “Right now, it’s tough,” reserve forward Omri Casspi told reporters. “Our season is on the line right now and we don’t have a lot of opportunities left. We need to get on a roll.” Point guard Rajon Rondo (thumb) had 12 assists against the Thunder to tie the franchise mark of 39 double-digit assist games set by Reggie Theus in 1985-86.
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (35-24): Power forward Zach Randolph completed a strong month by scoring 22 points and matching his season high of six assists in the victory over Denver. Randolph averaged 18 points and had four 20-point outings during February, and Memphis will continue to use him as a primary scoring option with center Marc Gasol (foot) out for the season. “Zach is a big-time playmaker, both as a scorer and an assist man,” point guard Mike Conley told reporters. “He’s really unselfish. Preview: L.A. Lakers At Denver
When: 9:00 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
                              Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
The Denver Nuggets are trying to survive without leading scorer Danilo Gallinari as they limp into Wednesday’s home contest with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nuggets announced earlier this week that Gallinari tore two ligaments in his right ankle and it is possible that the productive forward will miss the remainder of the season.
Gallinari, who is averaging a career-best 19.5 points, also sprained a third ligament in the ankle during the injury he suffered Friday against the Dallas Mavericks. Gallinari told reporters that it felt worse than the ankle injury that sidelined him for six games in December and an MRI exam revealed that to be true. The Lakers halted an eight-game losing streak Tuesday by notching a 107-101 home victory over the Brooklyn Nets despite the absence of Kobe Bryant (shoulder). Point guard D’Angelo Russell stepped up with his best game of his season as he established career highs of 39 points and eight 3-pointers — the points are the most by a Lakers rookie since Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor scored 39, 41 and 55 during the 1958-59 season.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (12-49): Bryant hopes to play against the Nuggets but there’s no certainty he’ll be available and shooting guard Lou Williams (hamstring) didn’t travel with the team to Denver after being injured during Tuesday’s game. Those developments may give Russell another opportunity to have a big performance as he took over the contest in the fourth quarter by scoring 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the final minute to cap the highest-scoring game of the season by an NBA rookie. “I was trying to still play through the offense and be aggressive at the same time,” said Russell afterward, “so I was trying to pick and choose my shots. It was just my night and it worked out great for me.”
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (23-37): Denver has lost five of six games and is certainly en route to missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Recently signed JaKarr Sampson started in Gallinari’s place in Monday’s 103-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies and had seven points in 30 minutes, and the Nuggets are looking for potent sixth man Will Barton (15.3 season average) to break out of his shooting slump. Barton has missed all 12 of his 3-point attempts during the past three games and is shooting just 30.4 percent from the field in the last five contests.

                              1. The teams have split two meetings this season — with the visiting team winning both times.
                              2. Denver PF Kenneth Faried has recorded three straight double-doubles and is averaging 19 points and 11.3 rebounds during the stretch.
                              3. Los Angeles C Roy Hibbert scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting against the Nets for his first double-digit outing since Jan. 29.
                              PREDICTION: Nuggets 122, Lakers 115

Preview: Oklahoma City At L.A. Clippers
When: 10:30 PM ET, Wednesday, March 2, 2016
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
The Oklahoma City Thunder have halted a mini-slump while the Los Angeles Clippers have a winning streak for the first time since Feb. 5-8. The two squads square off in Los Angeles on Wednesday when All-Star point guards Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul figure to wage another fierce battle.
Westbrook had 33 points to Paul’s 32 and that one point was the difference as the Thunder posted a 100-99 victory over the Clippers on Dec. 21. Westbrook tuned up for the outing on Monday by posting his ninth triple-double of the campaign – 20 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists – as Oklahoma City opened a four-game road trip with a 131-116 win over the Sacramento Kings. The Thunder had dropped four of five games before that victory while Los Angeles recorded a 105-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday for its second straight win. Paul had 23 points and 12 assists against the Nets for his fourth straight double-double.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (42-18): All-Star forward Kevin Durant had 27 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the victory over the Kings, and he wasn’t shy about expressing why the win was important. “It was huge for us,” Durant told reporters. “We’d lost four of five, so if we lose, you guys are going to act like the world is going to end, and nobody in here is laughing or feeling good. It’s been an emotional roller coaster for us the past couple of weeks. It was nice to come in here and chill after coasting to a win.” Oklahoma City’s offense was clicking as it shot 57.3 percent from the field and made 14 3-pointers, while backup center Enes Kanter scored 23 points on 11-of-11 shooting.
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (39-20): Los Angeles has won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak in early February and trails the Thunder by 2 1/2 games in the battle for third place in the Western Conference. Backup shooting guard Jamal Crawford poured in 26 points against the Nets and has been superb with 10 20-point outings in the past 14 games. “I got in a pretty good rhythm,” Crawford said after the Brooklyn game. “We just see what’s working for us on a particular night. I have the easy part of just shooting. Those guys are drawing up plays and getting open, so credit to them as well.”

                                1. Durant, who has scored 20 or more points in each of his last 46 games, had 24 points in the December meeting with the Clippers.
                                2. Oklahoma City backup SG Dion Waiters had 22 points against Sacramento for just his third 20-point outing of the season.
                                3. Los Angeles backup PG Austin Rivers (fractured hand) could return before the end of the week.
                                PREDICTION: Clippers 112, Thunder 111
